Today we unbox a brand new Dyna-Glo 23,800 BTU portable kerosene heater and show you how to set it up. All Dyna-Glo kerosene heaters come with a wick pre-installed and heat up to 1000 square feet! This is an awesome emergency heating option or a cheap heating source to combat inflation prices and power outage problems.

I have the same kerosene heater and like it. I use it as supplemental heat and in power failures. After I light it, I let it burn about 10 minutes on high, or the wick adjusted on high, then I back off my wick adjustment knob until the flame is the proper height. Great heaters, people have to use common safety tips, keep it away from curtains, etc. , several feet away. I ran a half tank of K-1 kerosene thru mine outside when I first used it, then light it up, and shut down, outside if a little smell bothers you, and, maybe crack a window about an 1" or 2". Thanks, John

Awesome! If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your unit? Over the last 3 years, I've seen these units retail anywhere between $129 to $289. I'm always curious what these are going for in different areas of the US. Here in the South, they seem to be hanging strong at $159 (unless anyone was lucky to catch it on a Black Friday deal). I don't know if you're new to kerosene heaters, but hang on to that instruction manual, its like gold. I always recommend to others to get a spare wick, batteries, and the igniter glow plug because nothing is worse than needing them and not having it ready to do the simple change out when the time comes. I'm sure you're going to like this unit and its simplicity. Let me know how it goes for you. Take care.

Great question! Here's the answer... At the start of the Covid pandemic my husband and I purchased an old foreclosed property (sight unseen...crazy, we know) to get out of suburbia hell and the rental market. The home's biggest problem was that the central heat and air system did not work...at all. Not to mention, the home was built in like the 1940's, it was not designed to have proper room for the system in the first place. When we priced everything out...it simply was NOT worth the investment of fixing anytime soon. So that led us to explore alternatives. Bottom line, is that we chose the DynaGlo kerosene heaters because of their simplicity. They set up easy, they start easy, they store easy...did I say they're easy to use? LOL. Kerosene in our area is also in more of an abundance that propane is. Propane heaters tend to be stationary units (mounted on a wall for example), whereas kerosene heaters are built with the intention of being moved (it comes with a handle on it). Not only could you use it as a "back up" heat source for your home but you could also get more use out of your investment by using it in a garage or shed while you're working on something during the cold months. It's really that versatile because it's not meant to be a permanent fixture in your home. Kerosene fuel itself can also be stored for a long time without going "bad" (upwards of years when stored properly). Also, as a woman, I have an easier time catching a "kerosene smell" than I do a "propane smell". So if my heater runs out of kerosene 'cause I wasn't paying attention to how long it had been running, I'm quick to catch that smell and get the unit out of the house and shut it down. Also, we have a 900 sq ft home with an open floor plan and ceiling fans in every room. This DynaGlo heater (23,800 BTU) can handle heating upwards of 1,000 sq ft comfortably even when it's 20 degrees outside. Hopefully this helps you and your wife make a decision about which way you want to go. I'm a HUGE DynaGlo advocate BUT I encourage you to think about your scenario and really weigh the pros and cons. Most importantly...talk to each other and make the decision TOGETHER because you both need to be comfortable using it when the time comes. can you tell me is the heat output of this heater high enough to boil water/ cook on top or do you need a specific model for that
@americanbackroadhomestead
@americanbackroadhomestead Жыл бұрын
That is actually a great question. I will have to dig out my thermometer sometime and film testing the surface temp of this heater. I know it gets crazy hot, I just don't have the exact degree temp reading at the moment. I'm all about safety while using these units, so I do want to remind you that DynaGlo specifically states in their product instruction manual to not place anything on the top of the cage. The reason for this is because that "cage like" top cover is extremely flexible not really creating a solid, safe cooktop. (I'll have to demonstrate that in a future video and you'll see exactly what I mean.) Of course I understand in extreme circumstances, people are going to do whatever they gotta do but I would highly recommend having a separate cooking unit such as a portable camp stove that is made to handle the weight of pots, pans, liquids, and food. Sometimes you can catch them cheap at estate sales, yard sales, Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, and OfferUp. Walmart even sells them, I believe they carry the Coleman brand. I'd rather see you be safe than sorry and I'm sure DynaGlo feels that way too because they're very specific in their usual manual. I've never seen a kerosene heater/cooking combo unit...one where it was designed to cook on, so I can't recommend any different models to use. If I ever come across one, I'll come back and post the info for you. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. If you haven't already, please consider subscribing. Do it have any strong oders when using it in the house?
@americanbackroadhomestead
@americanbackroadhomestead Жыл бұрын
There's 2 tricks to avoiding the smell in the house. 1) Use strictly clear, K1 kerosene. It's been highly refined so it has a very low sulfur content. High amounts of sulfur in kerosene is what creates the nasty "rotten egg smell" or what some people call a "harsh kerosene" smell. This is why people say the dyed kerosene (usually a red color) is awful on your kerosene heater because it is higher in sulfur content. Stay away from it if you can. It's usually cheaper than clear K1 kerosene, and now you know why. 2) Start up, shut down, and refuel your kerosene heater outside. The initial start up process every time you light your heater creates fumes and smells you don't want in your house. Same thing shutting it off. You are extinguishing the flame and this causes fumes and smells...just like when you blow out a candle or put out a fire. If you follow these 2 big tips, the answer is no, you won't have any strong odors when using your kerosene heater in the house. I've been using kerosene heaters as my primary heating source for 3 winters now...everybody that has been in my home are always fooled because they can't smell the kerosene. They're usually shocked when they see the heater on. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. If you haven't already, please consider subscribing. Have a great day!

Got the same heater myself. I’m having a problem with uneven flames. 1/3 of side has taller flames then the rest with a small dead spot with almost no flame. I can only lower the wick low enough to get a average flame height.
@americanbackroadhomestead
@americanbackroadhomestead Жыл бұрын
I have a question for you...when you set your heater up and filled it with kerosene, did you let it sit for 1 hour before you lit it? I only ask because if you didn't, that very well could be the issue because the wick may not have had the chance to soak up the kerosene all the way. Or if you've been using this heater for a while...you could have carbon/tar build up on the wick and you may simply need to do a dry burn. If that doesn't work, you'll need to do a complete wick change. When you have problems with the flame height...that's a sign that something is going on with your wick. I would suggest taking your unit apart to get a good look at your wick and what may be going on. If you need help getting to the wick, I have a wick replacement video for this exact model on my channel. I also did a full cleaning while I had mine torn apart...just skip forward to the parts you need or feel free to watch the whole thing. I hope this helps you. Yes it sat full tank for an hour and 15 min. It’s a brand new heater so first run. Throughout the running period nothing changed. Had some tall flames on 1/3 the circumference and the rest about the same size give or take a few. I couldn’t lower the wick too low because it would have become not ideal burning. So I had to settle with an average. The tallest flames are like an inch and a half to two.
@americanbackroadhomestead
@americanbackroadhomestead Жыл бұрын
@@RR-zq3mk I wonder if the wick was never installed correctly by the manufacturer (not common but it does happen). The mechanism inside your heater that lowers and raises the wick (the big black dial on the front controls this) has teeth like prongs that has to attach to the wick. If it wasn't installed correctly, you'll never get your wick to raise and lower properly to get the ideal flame height. Also, if a portion of the top of the wick was flapped over during manufacturer installation, the flame is never going to catch properly on the wick. Same will be true if your wick is sitting in there crooked. I'm pretty certain if you take off the two big bolts on each side of the black cylinder, lift it off of the base, raise and lower the wick, you'll be able to see exactly what may be causing the problem. For safety, just take the batteries out of it before you do this so that there is absolutely no way you can accidentally light the unit while working on it. Based on everything you've described...If I was you, I'd just get a brand new wick and install it myself that way I'd know for sure it was done right...but that's just my opinion. I know its super frustrating to get something brand new just to discover its not working right. You've already diagnosed what is going wrong, I'm positive you'll be able to figure out what is causing the problem. Shoot me an update.

Hi! Its beautiful!!! How many hours does it last once the tank is full? And how many hours a day do you have it on? Thank you
@americanbackroadhomestead
@americanbackroadhomestead Жыл бұрын
The tank on this heater is 1.9 gallons. Using clear, k1 kerosene, I can usually get between 10-12 hours of burn time. How many hours a day I leave it running really depends on the weather outside. If it's 20's, 30's or lower I'll run it all night long. During the day, if it's 40 degrees or warmer I might run it for a few hours in the morning and then shut it off until bedtime. There's too many factors involved to give you honestly give a straight answer on that...climate, how well your home is insulated, are you running a stove/oven to cook during the day, etc. etc. etc. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel. It’s tough to find in certain regions of the US. If you can’t find a gas station that has a kerosene pump, check your local retailer’s like Lowe’s, Home Depot, Rural King, Menards, and Tractor Supply. It’ll be more expensive though due to it being prepackaged. Last option I can think of is to check your local fuel delivery companies. If you have a kerosene tank, they might come fill it OR let you bring your cans to their station and fill them for you. Wouldn’t hurt to ask. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel! This unit is WAY too big to be using inside of a car or tent and would NOT be safe to use in that small of an area. This unit is rated to heat up to 1,000 sq. ft. (fair sized homes and garages). The heat coming off these units projects upwards putting you at risk of melting your tent and starting a fire...same goes for the vehicle. Please be safe and do not attempt to use one of these units in a car or tent. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel!

I don’t think you understand the size of these units. There is no way to safely use this particular kerosene heater in a car even if you have the windows rolled down. If I were you, I’d look into a Mr Buddy heater (Walmart and Amazon usually have them). They run off of 1 pound propane tanks and are much smaller in size. A lot of people camping in the back of their pickup trucks use these Mr Buddy heaters because they’re good for small spaces.
