I agree with your last suggestion, I think training people to have good mic technique is so quick and easy. For my church, the singers had horrible mic technique, I just cut up some 2-5 inch foam gave each foam a number, and told them to use a certain one depending on how loud their voices were, eventually they all learned to do it without the foam.

Old sound guy techniques is to put the mesh screen about where you want them to be when talking and then tell them to talk into the screen. This trains people not to be too far OR too close.

I saw a video about that. They said pop filters can't always filter harsh sounds like ps unless you angle the mic. The filter is good when positioning because if someone like me needs a reference, I could put the filter a few inches away and I could be near the filter to not over exert the proximity effect.

I've just picked up a unidirectional Dynamic microphone, it's pretty good at ignoring the background noise, I can't say much about traffic, but I have a pretty noisy room, including a constant hum from the air vents, stray dogs and cats, a laptop which sounds like a jet engine, it can avoid them all (especially when facing away from the source) unless you totally stop talking for a brief period. Edit: tinkering around with the gain, distance from mic, your personal comfortable way/loudness of your voice can also help alot.

If the bg noise is constant & consistent how about that trick of recording 30 sec, making a copy of it as long as the recording (many DAWs let you extend it many times with copies), put that on a second track with polarity flipped and mix down/render both? Haven't tried it but that's (mostly) what noise reduction software is doing anyway, right?

Hi Bandrew. There seems to be this annoying myth going around that condenser mics pick up more ambient noise than dynamics and it's a very entrenched belief. What you are saying isn't entirely inconsistent with the truth, but it seems a little ambiguous. No knock on you, by the way! This is my favourite audio podcast. But I found this article in Sound On Sound which explains why dynamics and condensers -- assuming they have the same polar pattern and are the same distance from the subject -- pick up the same amount of ambient noise, it's just about how they're used. Anyway, this explains it well: Myth: Capacitor mics ‘pick up more of the room’ than dynamic mics. If mics have the same polar pattern and are placed at the same distance from the source, they’ll pick up the same balance of direct and reflected sound, no matter whether they are dynamic or capacitor designs. If mics have the same polar pattern and are placed at the same distance from the source, they’ll pick up the same balance of direct and reflected sound, no matter whether they are dynamic or capacitor designs. Fact: Unless it’s in an anechoic chamber, no microphone will pick up only the direct sound coming from a voice or instrument. Some of that sound will always bounce around the room and be captured in reflected form as ambience or reverberation. Assuming the sound source and the room remain unchanged, the balance of reverberation to direct sound that is captured depends on two factors. The first is distance: the closer the mic is to the sound source, the more the direct sound will tend to dominate over ambience. The second is the polar pattern of the microphone, and the position of the sound source in relation to it: pointing a cardioid mic directly at a singer ensures that it is on-axis to direct sound while offering maximum rejection to reflected sound arriving at the back of the mic. When a microphone is being used specifically to capture room ambience, you might wish to do the exact opposite, and ensure that direct sound arrives at the deepest null point of that mic’s polar pattern. The actual operating principle of the microphone is irrelevant. Assuming that a dynamic and a capacitor mic have the same polar pattern, and that their diaphragms are the same distance from the sound source, they will pick up exactly the same balance of direct to reflected sound. However, this myth does contain a grain of truth. Many of the most commonly used dynamic microphones are designed specifically to be employed very close to their sources. Until recently, by contrast, there have been very few ‘stage capacitor’ microphones intended to be placed right in front of singers’ mouths. So, when used as intended, a Neumann U87 will indeed ‘pick up more room’ than a Shure SM58 - but only because it’s further away from the sound source! Sam Inglis

Would you think that a shotgun mic hanging above the talent would do the trick? Like an Rode NTG1. Cheap enough, easy for the preamp, a little isolation from the room noise. A 'dummy' mic could be used, just to help the talent to find the right position.

Stedman PS101 is just a pop filter and it’s only function is to prevent plosives. In terms of eliminating the proximity effect, you will need a proper mic technique or keep a fist distance to the mic itself to eliminate that proximity effect

i use the rode procaster for gaming. i’m on twitch sometimes just for fun and i see that it does an incredible job at keeping background noise away from the audience. i have it on an arm in front of my face in front of a rather loud computer which often screams a lot when it begins to undergo harsh processes-such as those experienced when running a game on high settings. i do have a little bit of processing on it, but no noise gates or anything which would make the audio begin to sound unnatural. have a listen if you’re considering it: twitch.tv/bh4tti

PLEASE, PLEASE someone answer this: I am looking for a mic that I can use to plug into my phone for making videos. I don't mind it being attached to my shirt, but here is the kicker... I am going to be hammering on an anvil (VERY loud metal noises) and don't know what type of microphone I should get. Is there any that cancel sound out above a certain decibel (similar to headphones used with guns), or would I just have to edit the video so the sound is lower? in which case, I still don't know what type of mic. I plan to get sound sound canceling pads in the future but will be recording in my garage, which will probably reverberate sound a bit. I don't want to damage the mic with the loud sounds either. I'm not super tech savvy, so please explain in crayon level. Please help. Thank you!

Did you end up picking something? Ideal mic for that are low sensitivity dynamics running in a mobile interface. You could use a kick drum mic for close up use, or a shotgun mic for room / general area use.

hi, Im trying to get a mic that do cardioid like Shure SM7B but i accidentally come across AEA KU5A and wondering how much does this mic pick up compares to shure's SM7B. Will you do recommend me to get the AEA KU5A or Shure's SM7B. I have already had a condenser mic but due to a small area with people moving around, it always picks up the background while recording and they just wont stop. Therefore, Im now looking for a dynamic Mic like Shure sm7b but now i wondered if AEA's Ku5a will do the job too since it seems recording a better sound than Sm7b. I main records vocal singing and some narrative and I wish the mic will only pick up the sound not more than around 2m away from the mic. Thank you.
@NebulonRanger
@NebulonRanger 3 жыл бұрын
Should be about even, given that while the KU5a is a ribbon, it's an active (i.e. phantom powered) microphone and therefore has a much hotter output. However, it is still a ribbon, so the KU5a is a lot more delicate than the SM7B.

Noisy environment - dynamic mic. Proximity effect? Low pass filter will help. But technique is probably the main thing, so why not have the talent wear headphones so that they have real time tactile awareness of how they sound in the mic?

@@KobraTrading Maybe bring the mic closer to your mouth (3-5 inches away at max) and lower your gain a little on the m2 .It should help.I used to have the usb version of the 2020 and it would pick up my computer fans so easily that it sounded like rain noise in recordings lol but doing those two things I mentioned helped a ton but ultimately getting a dbx286a (same as the dbx286s but older) and using the hardware noisegate on it and getting a rode procaster eliminated background noise entirely.Even when I talk there is pretty much no background noise coming in due to the mic being a dynamic and not picking up my computer fans now lol.If the first two options don't work then maybe take a look at getting a dynamic mic and a dbx286s if at all possible because it sounds like that would work better for you :).The only downgrade audio wise for me was a loss in clarity that condensor mics have.Anyway hopefully this helps you man. I only just now noticed the second sentence and realised what I typed probably means nothing to you now if you're getting the sound that you want but the good thing about my setup is that I have a noisegate that works for anything not just obs so even when on discord or whatever my mic is silent unless I talk into it most of the time :).Also are you liking the m2? I bought one about a week ago but the supplier here in Australia won't be shipping out my unit for about another month.

@@WyattOShea I like it a lot. Im actually editing my in boxing and review video 9f it right now. The noise gate as well as adjusting where it was and fiddling with the gain helped a lot. thanks. I got it at a comfortable distance away and the noise gate setup so that it picks me up easy even when I lean back, but cuts out my ceiling fan and the tick tock of the clock on the wall, even cuts out the mini fridge too. OBS is what I'm mainly concerned about as I can put a persistent noise gate on it with a daw, but it wasn't working with OBS. Cause mix stuff.
