We will make a primitive friction fire with a cedar spindle and a cedar base or hearth board. I'll try to shoot or snare grouse or snowshoe hare and cook it over an open fire and build a primitive lean to shelter with materials I find in the woods. I'll build a simple lean-to shelter with sticks and spruce or balsam bows, and make an epic fire to cook wild edibles I find in the forest. We experiment with eating birch tips like a rabbit, but mostly we use this to bait them in.
The winter offers sparse resources generally, as most things have either died off, or been burred by the snow. Deer have moved off to winter yarding areas, and bears are deep asleep in their dense. However, some small game still lurks around trying to stay away from frostbite and carry on with the rest of the living.
Thankfully there is plenty of snow to make water, but first a fire is needed to survive as eating snow cools the body and is difficult on the body's system. Thankfully we have a small billy can or steel water pot for boiling water.
Primitive challenge with a few simple basic tools. I will show you how to start a fire using primitive techniques and cook a wild grouse over an open fire. Survival is all about making the best of a bad situation. Staying warm and dry is the key to staying alive. After survival is taken care of, it's all about making your situation even better. Finding food, water, and making a shelter is a must to create ultimate survival comfort. I use a saw and basic tools to make a bushcrafter shelter in the Canadian forest using materials around us like tree branches and dried grass.
I attempt a friction fire using primitive technology - a cedar spindle, hearth board, and some birch bark and cedar shavings for a tinder bundle. Can I get a fire lite in tough conditions?

Awesome video. I grew up living backwoods and trapping and I thought I had seen most things. I just learned two new techniques, thanks. The reusing the snare and how to put set in it, then the hare pound. Thank you for the great information. I would like to pass along a couple things back to you. #1 Build A-Frame bough cubbies over your snares when snow in the forecast. #2 keep a whiskey flask of olive oil inside your coat in the winter. A shot before bed will keep you warm and those calories are invaluable as you know.

Building the shelter opposite each other and the fire between would have been the most effient way to build. That whole failure was up to inexperience and naive shelter building, hope you learnt something.

Very entertaining. I’ve done this at -25C as part of the Aircrew Survival Training for the Canadian Forces. One of the most memorable experiences of my life. So much snow that I had to put on snowshoes to move beyond my bivouac (Jarvis Lake Alberta in January). Small critique...why two shelters? In a survival situation don’t waste any time doing unnecessary work. Use your efforts to make one well insulated shelter and “snuggle up” to benefit from each other’s body heat. In a survival situation you have to ignore some of your inner insecurities. It would be interesting to try this in a “true” scenario. Take what you would typically take on a day hike etc. and use only that. No axe, no Swede saw etc. Keep up the good work. Love the alliance with Fowler👍🏻

Really excellent two part series. Some takeaways from your experience, and changes/adjustments you talked about making. It's been cool watching you and Jeremy's progress on your bunny slayer credentials over the last couple three years. Kudos to Jeremy for being the sacrificial lamb on the clothing front. Lesson, don't go hunting without bringing clothes that would keep you alive over night. Increase the material in boughs bed (especially) and shelter 1/2 to 2/3. Build a long fire. I was kind of surprised Jeremy didn't end up doing this. This is my two cents. Always bring a poncho. Wear it to keep moisture from accumulating on your clothes. Use it as a quick wind break. Throw it over your shelter so you don't need to add that extra material. Use it to cover a boughs/grass blanket you've weaved or tied together with cordage, increasing your thermal retention tremendously. A core survival item. Again, excellent real world scenario.👍

I grew up in Northbay Ontario in the 60s we used to go fishing every weekend just throw the pan down top of the station waggon a few groceries and off we go we didn’t have to go far well I could’ve fish Lake Nipissing but we used to go towards Mattawa and fish along to 17 S. or just north of Mattawa speckle trout rainbow trout bass likes all kinds of things and we didn’t have to go far we could do three or four lakes on the weekend I remember waking up early in the morning with the mist coming out to the lake and the loons calling and. breakfast was usually a fish from the day before we went camping the same way no provincial parks for us so many good memories Iam 66 and I still remember those times watching you guys brings it all back

Did a lot of this as a kid growing up near Lake Superior. Much more snow. Dug and slept in snow forts/quinzhees. Built a lot of fires. Walked a lot of miles in snowshoes. Chased a lot of bunnies. Staying dry is the key. If it’s above freezing, it is worse. We kept our outer layers outside so they stayed frozen.

Hey boys. Great vids. I have watched scores of outdoors vids in the last few months. I have never seen anyone use these, except myself when camping, etc. If you go to Walmart in the section where you find dish washing liquid and sponges and so on, you will find clear poly gloves. In MN you can get a pack with 120 pieces for under a dollar. I keep a pack in my truck and use them liberally to keep my hands clean when camping and fishing. Give them a try. Of course your hand must be dry to slide your fingers in, but that's what your pants are for. LOL.

Hells Bells, back in my day, I had to drive down hill in both directions on a mild summers day, (in an air conditioned truck), to the grocery store in order to purchase a butane torch and lighter fluid in order to light my campfires!! Can relate to the Jaws tale buddy.. I was waaaay to young also. I was scared to sit on the toilet after because I was adamant it'd come get me from below. Devised a method to take a dump and keep an eye out for Jaws coming up through the toilet water by actually standing on the seat and squatting, which worked fine untill the time I stayed at my cousins and was awoken in the morning buy a rather angry aunt demanding to know who was responsible for the turd on the bathroom floor 😏.... Seems there was a fundamental flaw in my survival technique 😉👍. Love the channel btw👌
