Echo is an American television miniseries created by Marion Dayre for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. It is the tenth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise, and is a spin-off of the series Hawkeye (2021). It sees Maya Lopez return to her hometown where she must come to terms with her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace her family and community. Dayre and Amy Rardin serve as head writers and Sydney Freeland leads the directing team.

Hey everyone! Thanks for watching! By the way, if you join up at any Patreon tier NOW, you'll be able to vote for the topic of this month's Community Video! Here's the link: www.patreon.com/pillarofgarbage Edit: and just to be clear, I’ll paste here a reply I have to a viewer below: I’m not trying to convince anyone that they were wrong to like or dislike the show _as a whole_ - I’m arguing that the disproportionate response to a leaked scene’s choreography (rather than reasoned, _post-release_ critiques of editing, writing, production methods, etc) is a clear indicator of bad faith & an instructive example of the way viewers can be manipulated.

I've never seen leaked footage of Echo but when my parents said while watching the real version ;- "Why did Hollywood suddenly copying Bollywood level action scenes" I really off-ed the Echo XD.. You think my parents who are old and they brought us into Hollywood movies suddenly know what woke is ?? and You can't recognise how mismatched DD vs Echo scene.. They Loved DD season 1 scene they know enough to remember and recall it and its a typical "Bollywood" thing to make original as grounded and EPIC as it can be ( because lack of budget if movie flops people immediately go bankrupt so they have mad pressure to win )... when the same character gets popular they ignore 90% of the beauty and grounded quality they had and give us the worst version of it. lol ~ So yeah I guess My mom and dad watch Nerdrotic and Critical drinker too right ? What I find particularly annoying about these kinds of fight being torn apart is that, if any creator listens, the only result is that we're gonna see more close-up over-edited fight scenes to cover up anything anyone might complain about instead of making something that looks exciting.

My only complaint about that fight was the same in most fight scenes in film and tv, chunks of metal and wood to the face are enacted to the same as bare fist, hardly at all. The corridor scene when someone gets hit by the butt of a gun, they stay hit.

As someone who reads Agatha Christie and murder mystery. The fact that Drinker says that Glass Onion isn't "following the genre" whatever that means proves he hasn't read a lick of her work or doesn't pay attention, the misdirection and making a simple mystery seem more complex is literally how most of her books go

I was watching regular videos theorising about the MCU till Endgame and it still was very enjoyable. Why is it that only afterwards I am unable to enjoy it? His argument: you're watching movies wrong. But consider this, you frequent a restaurant, you have loved it for years but lately the food there has been of declined quality. Because you have eaten there for a long time you still want to give them a chance. You go there time after time, still it is bad. Now before you go there you look through the window, the food looks nasty and you tell the other people around that the food is bad. Is it not now accurate to say that if something looks bad probably it is going to be bad. PS: so with out of context scenes you cant criticise on the quality of Choreography and try to predict what the final product is going to be like? To me it was his rant about the "Mystery genre". Genres are made up. They're descriptive, not prescriptive. You don't go into writing a script with the thought "I want it to be this genre, so I have to follow a certain narrative structure and plot points." (well you can, and I guess it sometimes works out), most often you just write the story you want to write, and once it's done people will look at the narrative structure and plot points and go: "Well, these things kind of fit with that certain genre, so I guess this is a story of that genre." Some of the best stories ever told, in movies, books or even video games take a hybridization approach to genre, merging some of the best traits of each genre to tell a story that both touches several different themes and appeals to a wide audience that may otherwise not be attracted to one particular genre. (Of course some of the worst stories ever told do the same thing, but badly.)

@@LadyDoomsinger I mean, you are somewhat right. Obviously all genres are made up. One person wrote a book and then another person mimicked it, and then it became a genre. They're conventions formed over time. Like I really like sci-fi stuff, so when i write a sci-fi thing there has to be /some/ elements relating to the genre/sub-genre I've chosen. Like yes, I don't go beat for beat following the structure seen in most sci-fi works, but if it's a space opera, it should emphasise the big battle sets with risk-taking, it might feature a romance, it might not. But at least I can sit down and go "I want it to be this genre". Because it'd be super weird to write out a space opera but when you're marketing your work to people you say it's a historical romance. Also, you shouldn't appeal to a wide audience. It's just not realistic. Not every piece of media will appeal to everyone. It's also super limiting. Yes, generally, you would want a wide-range of people to engage with your creative piece, but you won't have the same effect. Not everyone reads, or plays books, or hell, even watch movies and/or tv. You want your artistic work to appeal to the audience you're writing for.This space opera novel I am hypothetically writing? Do I want it to appeal to the folks who read smut and talk about it on TikTok? If that's the only genre they're interested in, then probs not. Do I want it to appeal to people who like space operas and a love for queer disabled characters who win in the end? Yes, if that's what the piece is about. I know that this comment "wasn't that deep", but as a writer, I just needed to voice my thoughts!

@@mxmissy Yeah, I didn't mean it like it's some hard rule about how you should or shouldn't write, my point was that arguing about what you can or can't do in a story, "because it's X genre" is dumb. If something in your story doesn't fit with a certain genre, that's because your story either isn't actually that genre, you have a fresh take on the genre, or you are hybridizing genres. As a side note, I didn't mean to imply that hybridization was the key to writing a successful story because it appealed to a wider audience, I was mere pointing it out as a potential benefit of that style of writing. And hybridization happens more than you think - every time you watch an action movie, and the protagonist has some relationship trouble or emotional turmoil, that is technically a hybridization between the Action and Drama genres... it's just so common these days, because most people want relatable human protagonists, even in action movies, that people don't really think of it that way.

I enjoyed the fight scene as a person who taught the Martial Arts for a decade I know a little about the complexities of choregraphing a fight, this was a good fight scene. 2 things about that 1- a boxer fights with their hands standing up, there are legal targets to strike while a martial artists has no illegal areas. 2) this is a comic book thing - Echo power in the comic book is her ability to copy anyone's fighting style similar to Taskmaster. connecting that to the show her father told to learn by watching. So yes she could go toe to toe with DD. I am a subscriber now, looking forward to more videos.

DD season 3 fights are even worse. Charlie wanted to do more of the stunts itself, and it shows. More than half of the hits don’t even convincingly look like they make contact. That being said, everything together (music, sound effects, full speed choreography, and general suspension of disbelief of a blind ninja kicking ass) still makes DD an incredible series, with season 3 being some of the best of the show.

I apologise for pulling the curtain back there, but I think that’s the wrong takeaway. If you distorted and picked apart and slowed down _most_ things, you’d see the seams. The Daredevil hallway fight - like everything else in these shows and films - was always a performance, but I don’t think making that clear takes away from its quality - if anything, it makes even more apparent the training and dedication that went into selling such a complex sequence to viewers so successfully.

Yes, the writers, directors and upper chain of command are like 75%+ at fault. However...the actors must take some of the balme when it comes to just bad acting. Like 100% of the other Disney made movies/shows, they focus 95% of their attention on DEI vs Story/Good Actors. So we are getting actors that fit their minority narrative (agenda) of the series (popularity). Instead of actual good/deserving upcoming and veteran actors. Let us be real...even if you kinda like them, actors like Iman Vellani, Alaqua Cox , Hailee Steinfeld and etc, were not chosen because of their acting skills. They were chosen for being female and/or minorities and that is it!

Echo’s problem is that it feels like two shows: the New York-based continuation of Daredevil and Hawkeye it was largely marketed as, and the cultural exploration of the Chocktaw that it spends most of its time in. The problem is that it doesn’t quite work as either; if had wanted to be the former, it should have set the show in New York, limiting the Oklahoma part to a one or two episode excursion. If it had wanted to be the latter, it should have chosen a villain and conflict more intricately tied to Oklahoma and Chocktaw culture. They try to merge the two worlds but ultimately fail. The fact is that Kingpin as a character is defined by his love of New York, and so he feels wildly out of place in this story.

Part of directing an action scene is knowing when to cut, when not to and what to cut to - these directors have been relying on quick takes that are legible but otherwise look bad for a LONG TIME. The reason is it was the shot was only intended to be watched for 2 and a half seconds but because this hypothetical shot is sandwiched between shots that look better the human brain doesn't notice. You can turn the quality down to 144p and slow it to 0.25 on any well regarded action scene and the problems that are there become clearer because the people behind it didn't think of creating that scene with that intention in mind. Mad Max Fury Road has this for example however nobody is going to do this to Fury Road and not get eviscerated online. Even The Raid 1 and 2 which is peak martial arts choreography in my eyes (and spoiler alert - I'm not alone in thinking that), while the shots are longer it doesn't help that what WAS high octane action scenes - when put at 144p and 0.25x speed becomes a game of pointing out that there are counters and dodges before the attacks, clearly not hitting each other, over the top reactions, missed opportunities of "Why didn't they hit here?". This isn't me shit-talking The Raid, my point is that this method of watching an action scene breaks the illusion of filmmaking by design.

Seeing just the scene and nothing else, you could maybe make a Devil's Advocate argument for people willing to hear it. "Women are weak, woke woke woke, she would literally explode in one punch." But even just seeing the Hawkeye series, we know she can go toe-to-toe with impressive male fighters, clowning on dudes in the boxing club and posing a decent threat to Hawkeye/Ronin. So then it becomes about Daredevil, a legit superhero who can take out guys ten times his size, because he is so awesome... Except wait. No, Daredevil is just a dude. His power lets him see in the dark and read people's heartrate and stuff. It's helpful in stealth, but not hugely useful in any other kind of fight. He's basically just Batman, and not roided up comics Batman, but the normal human one from most movies. So this is two semi-realistic, peak-class normal human fighters in a room. And she only survives without a concussion because she keeps going for a shotgun and Daredevil has no reason to stick around. It's not even her strength that saves her ultimately, but her wits and his lack of interest. It's a totally reasonable way to hype up our new protagonist, like Ant-Man vs. Falcon. They don't win, exactly, but they're competent enough against someone we see as impressive. Again, maybe you don't like women being portrayed as not being made of cardboard, but based on what we've established, this is totally reasonable. You're now critiquing the franchise, not just this show. Except, even that falls apart when you've watched the entire episode, which starts by introducing the literal demigod she's descended from. You can't even use the same "women are weak" logic that these chuds cling to. It's basically like complaining that Wonder Woman shouldn't be able to punch men out because she should be weaker than all human men, despite being a demigod in the movie. It's total nonsense, projecting their flimsy ideas about reality onto a fictional narrative about a magic woman.
@jaybailey8175

Hey buddy. So you used the comparison of Ant-Man beating Falcon as Scott "outsmarted Falcon". This is wrong. Falcon had no knowledge of Scott's abilities on top of the fact that Scott's abilities are downright superior. Daredevil is hailed by stick, the hand and fighters of KunLun as being the greatest fighter known. He has even defeated Iron Fist in hand to hand (without the fist). So to say that Maya who has not one, but two disabilities neither of which grant her super powers defeats him in hand to hand because she beats up boxers in a gym is down right ridiculous. The fight itself is choreographed in such a retarded way that allows for her to survive when Matt would know of and break her prosthetic. And would have known to prioritize her instead of the other guy who tackled him, because he would've already sensed what she was attempting to grab. Maya also should not have been able to compete against Hawkeye who scales to Black Widow, the winter soldier and fuckin Black Panther. Again it would work if her training, experience or power set was on par with these characters. But of course, they are not. The show does everything it can to boost Maya up, as all new Gen mcu films and shows have done, without actually putting in the work to just justify the status were supposed to hold her to.
@TheDetectiveEngineer

Putting aside who can best whom, I think they were criticising how bad the choreography of the fight was. They referenced the fight between assoka and Anakin in assoka show, how it felt like an extremely trained actor was accomodating for someone who had little to none training in the choreography. And as @jaybailey8175 pointed out they did not show the level of skill Echo had. And from what we gathered from the hawkeye show and the start of the Echo, yes he would wipe the floor with her. That is the reason people don't even bat an eye when Barton was struggling against Natasha. They showed us the level of skills they possessed over the years. And were played by extremely talented actors who did an extensive training for the role. It felt real, grounded and above else it showed the hardwork that went into it from both actors and production crew.
@philipvipond2669
@philipvipond2669 4 ай бұрын
@@jaybailey8175 First, my exact words were, "They did not beat them exactly", so I have no idea where you got "Ant-Man outsmarted Falcon" or "Maya defeats Daredevil." What I actually said was that Maya was quick-witted and "survived without a concussion" because she knew she was at a disadvantage and kept trying to flee or get a weapon. If your position is so strong, then why do you feel the need to lie about mine? Then again, if you want to talk about the fictional characters who think Daredevil is a good fighter, then you've brought us back to the fiction, so the *literal Demigod* introduced at the start of the episode shows exactly why Maya would "scale to" normal human fighters like Matt.
@philipvipond2669
@philipvipond2669 4 ай бұрын
@@TheDetectiveEngineer If they just wanted to complain about the choreography, why use such a terrible quality of video? You might say that the first episode wasn't out yet, so this is all they had, but if you watched the video you're commenting on, you'd know that this has been a pattern. The show's out now, so why not review the polished version of the entire first episode? Speaking of which, if you watch the episode, it actually *does* show Maya's level of skill. Incidentally, it even does that in the exact same way Netflix did for Daredevil: by having her take out a room full of armed men. This happens immediately before Daredevil shows up. So you could say she should be more tired, but not that we don't know her skill.
@jaybailey8175
@jaybailey8175 4 ай бұрын
@philipvipond2669 Maya does not unlock those powers until much later. So again, she should stand no chance against Matt, who already scales far above her. You also keep referencing her "surviving without a concussion" as a positive on her character where as that is a issue with the writing and choreography as she is hit in the head several times by daredevils baton which has been known to fuck people up with one hit. Hell, she doesn't even get scratched. Fuckin Kingpin got cuts the first time he faced Matt with the batons. And again being quick witted doesn't mean shit unless you have the strength to act on it. Someone who was quick witted was Matt when he fought Bullseye in DD season 3. Where he would use his powers and his high level fighting experience to throw off Bullseyes superior abilities. But because the writers of that show had brains all of that strategy still meant fuck all to someone who has vastly superior abilities to Matt. The same logic SHOULD apply here. But the writers could not think of any proper feasible ways to do that and instead just have her beat Matt hand to hand whilst being double disabled and far less experienced. Then have her escape fuckin Daredevil who can track people across the city. Also, buddy, it isn't lying. It's miswording. From an understandable point of view, Ant Man's escape and Mayas escape are Victories given their conditions for victory in their scenarios.

Scott Turow pulled a very similar narrative trick in his first novel, "Presumed Innocent" (excellent book, recommended.) It's told first person from the view of the man, Rusty, who's been accused of murdering his mistress and it isn't until you get halfway through the book that you realize that despite the story being from Rusty's point of view, HE HASN'T SAID IF HE DID IT OR NOT. It's a chilling and effective moment because the first-person perspective makes you sympathetic to Rusty and what he's going through but...have you been sympathizing with a murderer all along??

Hey Pillar of Garbage, I'm a fan of your channel and I've usually always agreed with your takes on whatever topics you discuss. That being said, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. I've watched the Echo vs Daredevil fight scene before i watched this video and i watched it again after to make sure my judgment wasn't too quick the first time. I also never knew about the culture war bs surrounding it before i watched it and i obviously don't think it deserved any of that nonsense. Maybe it's just that I've watched a lot of martial arts movies, but i still think the scene looked pretty bad. A lot of moves just felt like they lacked in speed or impact or weight and a lot of the times they just felt unnatural and too choreographed. I know actors don't really hit each other on set but most media does a pretty good job of hiding it and one of the reasons why i think that scene couldn't do it was the decision to shoot in wide, long tracking shots. I'm not biased towards the Daredevil show either because I've never seen it and i think the hallway scene was also a bit amateurish. All I'm saying is that it wasn't as bad as all the right wing grifters are making it up to be but i also think it's not befitting of a production from Disney

I went into Echo blind of all the “controversy”. I liked it, and while it was not what I expected, I did like it both as a viewer and indigenous person. It has flaws, but it has heart, that beats with passion and ambition that I love. Seeing Maya go from a rising villain to a growing hero was was a great character arc to watch. It’s kinda sad to see the show is being overshadowed by all this negativity from these guys over the first episode, and it feels like this show was targeted if I’m being honest.

Something that I was kind of wondering about while watching it is why the decision was made to make Maya Choctaw. Comic Maya is Cheyenne and it just seemed like such an arbitrary change that I imagined there must be some kind of business reason for it. Actors, consultants, filming locations, I am real curious what that was because I imagine it had to be a discussion at some point.

The “everything-is-woke” crowd is continually getting more annoying every single day, it seems they can’t be competent enough to learn how to actually critique stuff for the life of them. Tbh. Drinker was right with one thing. Making the character suddenly have powers that are lazily tied to their lineage is an over played and ridiculous trope that harms the actual story and flow. And man, her getting her "powers" which includes good shooting, fighting, and...magic healing? And lending it to her grandma was absolutely ridiculous and Kingpin not resolving anything with Maya is so unbelievably forced and dumb. As whole I did like it.
