How Economy Seven works, and why you have it (if you do), by Mike the Boilerman. I'm often asked what the switches are for on the wall next to an off peak storage water heater such as a Pulsacoil. and which switches should be ON and which should be OFF. Tenants especially get told by the letting agent to just turn all of them ON, which is wrong and will lead to high electricity bills for the reason explained in the video. Thank you for sharing the info sir, I was struggling to understand what's wat and feared what's gonna blow out but I understood that off peak is always on and the other switch is like ad-hoc. Thank you again sir

Thank you for the helpful video. I have followed advice and understand but in the morning I check that if the water is hot but it isn't, do you have any idea what the problem might be?

Thanks for this. I tried turning off the switch that fed directly into the pulsa rather than via the timer device. (When this switch is on, it hums quietly 24/7) . It basically powers off the whole unit and presumably the hot water pump as didn't deliver to kitchen sink when needed after only an hour off. My elec bill is 50% above national average for 2bed flat and thought turning that off might be the cure. Any advice on what I could try next?

Just moved into new home with same meter as in the picture. Not sure why but it has 3 meter readings plus total ? Also not sure what the orange boost button is for ?

I'm wondering if the prepay meters with two rates are like this, there's plug sockets in my house which I thought didn't work maby they are for this purpose..edit, no I hadn't plugged it in properly 😊❤️

Hello, thank you for explaining. I've moved into a flat with economy 7, when I use my appliances during the day (I work from home) and lights/heating etc is this drawing electricity from the night rate when the tank has already heat up. Or while I'm working from home are my appliances drawing electricity from the day rate please?

Hello Chante. Lights and heating used in the daytime will be drawing power at daytime price. Hot water however, drawn in the daytime will be using energy stored from the previous night's heat-up at off peak prices. (Unless you have the 'daytime boost' heater element switched on.) Thanks for the info Mike. Do yo know if storage heaters that charge on the off peak tariff use any electric during the day to release the heat? I can’t find an answer to this anywhere. TIA.

Hi Diz, most storage heaters use absolutely no daytime electricity at all, but there are some exceptions. There are a few around which us a fan to circulate warm air, in which case 20 or 30 Watts of daytime electricity will be getting used to power the fan, a trivial amount though. There are also a few around with a daytime 'boost' heater you can use for immediate heat should the store get cool. These will use daytime electricity when boosting. Hope that helps, Mike

As per the video you to switch on the button other than "off-peak". Off-peak= night only and cheap. The other one is for daily use but this is expensive.
