Why Qigong?
Qigong is an ancient Chinese exercise & healing technique. Combining movements in stillness, mental connection, tradition Chinese medicine, self cultivation, breathing and meditation to increase balance and vital energy Qi.
A gentle, relaxed, slow, yet strong, suitable for everyone - its smooth movement as flowing water and floating clouds - instils calmness in both body and mind.
A wonderful and simple exercise for people of all ages to improve both physical and mental health and wellbeing.

I came back with feedback after not even 12 hours after my first time doing this. I have been struggling with anxiety and panic disorder meaning I couldn't even leave my bed and hyperventilating for hours. A doctor reccomended me this and here I am. I couldn't even do the breathing exercise (because of my anxiety and hoping with time I'll be able to do it), I only focused on movement and today has been the first day in 3 weeks in which I haven't felt anxiety and I have been very calm. I feel like it's a miracle for me! Thank you for this!

This gentler version without the deep horse stance is more practical for people more focused on health benefits rather than martial arts.

Qigong was mentioned in How to Starve Cancer by Jane McLelland. A couple days later I was in a Charity Shop and a book on Qigong was there so I bought it for £1. My wife and I were going to start together. Time passed without doing it and I had some reflexology and unprompted she told me to do Qigong The Universe has brought you and Qigong to me, thank you x

@@YogaLilyStudio thank you. I just did my practise in the garden being ‘buzzed’ by Swallows who have just returned to UK from Africa! I am currently completing a Course in teaching meditation. I will incorporate Qigong in my sessions when I am better at it! I’m currently waiting for my GP to get me onto a Tai Chi ‘prescription’ hosted in the gardens of the Doctors Surgery 😁

Your meditation will work well with the Tai Chi standing meditation called 'Zhuan Zhuang' (stand like a tree). this is the clearest Brocades video I have seen and do it daily for neck and back issues. Thanks for your teaching. I am 75 and these are very doable. I have found it to be more effective than physical therapy exercises I have been doing for back and neck.

Thank you for sharing this with people around the world. I am getting older and recently had some injuries. The pandemic also shut down my usual exercise venues. I feel prematurely tired and sore. I needed a new start, and your instruction is helping me being taking care of my mental and physical health. Even while wearing a knee brace I was able to go through these exercises. I look forward to learning these forms in detail, especially the five animal frolics! Thank you for giving me some optimism about feeling better and, by being more mindful and present, being a better person, too.

Thanks for sharing this Ba Duan Jin routine; it's an excellent instruction, and a perfect introduction to Qigong. After practising these exercises on a daily basis I definitely feel a positive change in my mental and physical health...

Hello Michael, Eight Brocades and Yi Jin Jing kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8pdlKV6tLHLj2w.html are really great ways to start or finish a day. Yi Jin Jing is used by Shaolin as their warm up muscles, tendons and joints before practicing their martial arts. 😊 Lily

Hello Angela, thank you for the question. Our hands are linked to our heart, lung, pericardium and more via the meridian pathways. With regular practice Qigong will regulate the Qi and blood in the body improving circulation. Hello,I am 75 years old person doing Tai chi exercises since 4 years and I find 8 brocades extremely beneficial for body and mind. I do these 8 exercises almost every morning. Your way of teaching is very clear. My one question is how many repetitions of each one exercise can be practised at a session . I will be obliged to know from you. Thank you.

Hello Ramakrishna, thank you for your kind feedback and question. The eight brocades practice is not fixed to a set amount of repetitions for the exercises. A gentler version would be to only do a repetition once each side (left & right), and the stretching up and folding down exercises just 3 times. If you wished to focus more on a single exercise, you could repeat as many times equally each side as you felt benefit. In Health Qigong we try to limit the movement to what is beneficial to you as a practitioner rather than it becoming a strenuous exercise. Hello Mark, yes, you are correct. The Eight Brocades Health Qigong was developed in collaboration with the Chinese government's administration of sports and the International Health Qigong Association. They've developed quite a few wonderful practices designed for benefitting health. Eight brocades is used in hospitals in China for recover from illness and post surgery. 🙏 Lily

I'll try but given the side effects of my stroke I highly doubt I can do the arms over the head moves. Couldn't hurt to try I guess. I'm used to modifying routines after all. Got any physical disability friendly routines?

I've been unable to create videos for some time as I was injured in an accident which has damaged my ankle and needs surgery. I'm hoping to be able to create again soon. Lily 😊

Just started back into tai chi after so many years of not doing it. Learning qigong now at the same place. My teacher mentioned your video on qigong. I did have a question when you are doing the archery stance is it in a front stance position are a horse stance I couldn’t tell. Ty

I am curious about the one pose called "Archer" why is the index finger pulled up and the hand at a 90 Degree angle. I thought the index finger was supposed to point out into the distance. Isnt the hand bent position "Kiu Sao" from Hung Gar. For Chi gung purpose the opening of chest, shoulder and back seems inhibited by the Kiu Sao which is more of a combat, hard style position. I have wondered about this for a long time. I appreciate any insite you can give me, thank you.

Hello John, the flexed wrist with finger pointed up is a hollow hand for collecting Qi at the 'lao gong point'. Focus on the finger tip 'Shang yang point' enhances the liver Qi, as it is opening in to the eyes regulating joints. Also around the wrist when flexed will stimulate the lung and large intestine line meridian 'tai yuan point'. One hand pushing out, the other pulling in fromt of the shoulder 'yun men point' will fully open the chest, shoulder and heart, also the upper back. There is a lot more subtle detail to this sequence and I am planning to make some videos diving deeper in to this. If you would like to subscribe you will be able to catch these when they come out. Thank you Noel, you are correct it can be called this too. There are many translations for the BaDuanJin as they are a reference to the silken nature of the movements in the practice. Silk at the time of the forms creation was considered the most perfect and beautiful thing. They associated this silken quality to the practice being the most perfect exercise for body and organ health. 😊 Lily

Thank you for the question Tim, many of the names are interpretations of ancient texts or pictorial descriptions. As with many martial traditions and schools, names of movements have been influenced by their teachers translations through the ages, giving differing schools their own take and modifications on the names. This Eight Brocades form is the Chinese Health Qigong Association version so uses their naming convention but there are also Wudang and Shaolin versions which are subtly different again. I guess it's the human story to change, adapt or just be mistranslated through the ages. 🙏

Eight Brocades focuses on different parts of the body to enhance limb strength and joint flexibility - they are great for improving the respiratory, cardiovascular and immune system.
