When two South Korean girls were found dead with tape binding their hands and face - police were stumped. The murders were so violent and extremely unusual that detectives had never seen anything like it.

In South Korea, when they turn 18 everyone has to get something called a ‘identification card’ , and during the process all of their fingerprints are registered. That’s why the government of SK has all the citizens fingerprints, so it’s really useful when someone goes missing or when trying to find the culprit.

There’s no way those two poor girls are his first victims simply because it’s extremely rare that a person escalated so fast from nothing to such horrible acts. There must have been some middle step before this. Also, the precision that he carried out the murders with and the fact that it took so long to find the body, those are indicators that he’s done that before. First murders aren’t so “perfect”, the first time you do something you’re bound to make mistakes. He practically didn’t because if no one checked the suitcase and the plumber hadn’t removed the panel in the bathroom, those girls wouldn’t have been found, and what’s even scarier Kim would still be out there doing the same to other girls.

The profile suggests serial killer. Most start in their early twenties, he was already 29. He was definitely confident and already had an MO, victim type and signature. My guess is that his trigger was his divorce back in South Korea and he was killing his wife over and over again.

It's so scary how normal he looks. He seems so... average. That is definitely the scariest part for me. He could be the neighbor next door. A friend. A teacher. Anyone could be a murderer and that's so creepy. I'm pretty sure those were not his only victims, it doesn't make sense that he would be so "good" at it so fast. Also the fact that he was so careless about it makes me think that he got away with it before, so he thought he would get away with murder again.

That reminds me of a story my mum used to tell me; Before she had me (1996) she was a bartender in our city's downtown area. She lived right behind the bar and partied there when she was off shift. Her group of friends was very lively and very close, and they would drink, and sing, and sit in each other's laps, and share their homes for sleeping off those terrible hangovers. One of the "newer" friends in the group was a very quiet man who rarely ever engaged in the festivities, claiming he wasn't much of a drinker, but still let the girls sit in his lap when they were singing karaoke, and still came over the their houses after the bars closed. Until one day, when he did indulge in some drink. He was alone with one of the guys from the group and had a few too many, then just started unleashing a story of how he murdered and dismembered a woman in his apartment and put her torso in a suitcase and sent it down the river the runs through our city. Obviously that friend didn't keep quiet, he went straight to the police and buddy was arrested and thrown in jail shortly thereafter. They never did find her head or her limbs, but my mom and her friends were very wary of people who wouldn't drink with them after that. She always taught me to get to know people. To be that person they could trust with anything. Just in case. (No pun intended)

My mum’s manager murdered both of her elderly parents in 2008. They worked at a hospital together and were nurses. It was very disturbing she claimed she was trying to put them out of their misery. May I add it was a very violent attack, multiple blunt force injuries and 28 knife wounds. She would sometimes call from prison and ask to speak to the staff but my mum refused to entertain her. Now we have moved away I’m not sure if she still tries to chat to people.

It's so scary to realize this. I live in the US. When I was in school, 16-18, there were two different situations where a classmate was mvrdered by another. The first time the k!ller sat next to me in government and he k!lled my childhood friend over thinking he stole subwoofers from his car. He showed up to his dad's house during a get together and walked up and sh0t him on the front porch. He ran from Indiana to California and was extradited a few months later. The other the k!ller was on the track team with me and he sh0t a classmate that sat in front of me in English and Algebra class. He showed to his house and they got in a debate and the victim said he had the wrong person he didn't do or have either. All over the green stuff you can partake in 💨 and money. He turned to go in the house and close the door and was sh0t in the back of the head. Unfortunately, I grew up with a handful of people that have k!lled someone. My ex partner works for the government and has confirmed k!lls also. It's terrifying knowing this. It makes me so paranoid. I can't imagine taking another life.

I just hate that the guy continued to deny and avoid accountability even after being found guilty. It’s adding insult to injury to the victims families. The audacity to plead “not guilty” and claim you didn’t intend to k*ll them? Sick. Mr Kim took advantage of the solidarity and companionship that people feel when they encounter someone of the same ethnicity/country of origin while traveling abroad. He literally pretended to be their friends and gained trust; I wouldn’t be surprised if he had these plans from day one of meeting them. I also agree with the theory that they weren’t his first victims, not with how calculated and strategic he was. I think he got cocky and got caught as a result of it. I feel like his only real motive was for “pleasure”, and I think that’s why he purposely left their eyes exposed while taping them up because he wanted to see their reactions. My prayers go out to the families of the victims

It will never stop terrifying me how your average murderer isn't some stereotypical creepy looking villain, but a normal man/woman with bills and working a job like you and me. Shopping in grocery stores, riding public transportation, and hiding in plain sight going about their day looking utterly normal. That's crazy as hell! And as if he wasn't already taking those ladies money from their rents! He most definitely murdered more women than that. ESPECIALLY if he was already travelling globally!

I just recently finished a forensic anthropology class for my criminology degree and lemme tell you, it is incredible how much you can tell from bones alone. As you said, you can figure out what’s called a biological profile of a person, which consists of stature, age at the time of death, sex (not to be confused with gender), and population affinity (aka ancestry). You can also tell what kind of trauma the person experienced and whether it was before, during, or after death (antemortem, perimortem, and postmortem, respectively). Same with the stages of decomposition, bugs have a lot to do with it. For example if beetles were there that could signal a body being left for months to years, whereas flies and larva indicate a more recent death. Same with the blueish/purple tones, that’s called marbling and it usually happens in the bloat stage when blood is pulled down by gravity to certain areas to cause the discoloration as well as bloating of the body. Where the body is can impact the timing of each stage as well. It’s an extremely interesting class and science and I very much recommend it to people that aren’t squeamish about those kinds of things

Those poor families. I have no doubt that they worried something would happen to their loved ones while they were living so far from home. It must have been even worse to learn it was a man from Korea who would have easily won the girls' trust before committing such a heinous crime. In the absence of answers, I'm glad there was some justice in this case.

koreans tend to be very trusting of other koreans when we meet one another in other countries. even though i'm only half korean, when i've met koreans over the years, they often invite me to their homes, churches, social events and even offered me jobs on the spot. They bring you gifts, feed you, and try to insert themselves into your life in a helpful manner, because it's part of our culture to take care of the community members and people around us. And especially people who are older that you are supposed to treat you with care, and you are supposed to respect them like an elder sibling. we call each other "older brother" and "older sister" even if unrelated. this is a beautiful part of korean and many other asian cultures, but sometimes people take advantage of kindness. it is sad to live in a world where being good to our neighbors can lead to death. it's not wonder the western world teaches us to be standoffish and distant from strangers and neighbors. It hurts my heart to hear a korean person did this to one of our own, it's so shameful and disgusting. nobody should hurt anyone for any reason, but this one is especially insulting due to the nature of how he took advantage of our cultural expectations.
