you have no idea how much this helped me do my timing belt service! thank you for the very clear, understandable, step-by-step instructions, sir!!!

Max, I just completed the timing belt job on my 91 300zx. Your videos gave me the confidence to overcome the challenge of doing the job. I also replaced my VTC gears, main cam and crank seals. I wound up replacing the tensioner, timing belt pulleys, water pump, belts, etc. In effect, I completely redid the entire front end of the motor. Thanks for taking the time to make the videos and to go into the depth that you did. You saved me about a grand in labor costs, plus helped me to get the feeling of accomplishment of doing the job myself.

Timing belts don't squeal- squeal is from the belt slipping on the pulley. Timing belts have teeth which prevent this. A periodic groaning noise can indicate timing belt problems, but squeal at startup or under hard acceleration indicates an accessory belt that is either under improper tension or is on it's last legs. Unfortunately, timing belts can fail without any warning, which is why you change them preemptively. I recommend doing the whole kit including the pulleys, which I didn't do here. The belt I put on in this video series only lasted me 18k miles before it started rubbing up against the timing cover because it warped- an idler pulley went bad!

Nice video. Very helpful to get a quick rundown of the process. Just got a 300zx that needs timing belts, a/c, brakes, waterpump for a trade for a Lincoln Town car I have @ my shop i was going to sell for $500....I test drove the car and it was fun.....needs the work and I have never worked on one. This video helped save me time.

Should have kept the town car, just did the waterpump on my 95 300zx only took 9 hours.

My god... then number of times I say "crud" in this video. I was trying really hard not to swear in the video since I was sending it to my college professor.

Okay don't slap me: But have you any idea if your awesome tutorial can serve for Twin Turbo Z32s? Do we know if the installation is that different between the Turbo and the NA? Obviously I will adhere to my factory service manual, etc., but I LOVE video tuts for car stuff. Thx

You may have to remove additional intake piping to get to the front of the engine, but otherwise it should be the same.

9:45 "power steering belt removal" -- you did not explain in more detail how this belt is removed and you did not "get back to it later when installing" either. You didn't do it because removing this effing belt is a NIGHTMARE! I just spent an hour removing this effing thing ... something I thought would take 3 minutes! The power steering pump WILL NOT SWIVEL due to the metal pump hoses LOCKING this mother in place! You have to PRY it off whilst turning the engine via your 27mm (1"1/16th) ratchet! One hand on the pry-bar and one on the engine-turning ratchet. You have to put it back on the same way... it such shit! I like how you skipped it ... you should have screamed or something!!!

I cheated and cut the belt, then I damaged swapped it at my work xD

I do explain in more detail in the subsequent videos. You have to watch part 2 (or 3 I can't remember). But yeah, I have no idea what Nissan was thinking with that tensioner system. it has like 1 inch of pulley movement maximum, and it's very difficult to figure out.
@exodream84116 жыл бұрын
I used a hammer and a piece of wood to push it down little by little.

@TrimbleEpic9 жыл бұрын
You didn't do the seals??!
@TrimbleEpic9 жыл бұрын
***** Ahhh... That makes sense... As long as you monitor those seals for leaks. It is my understanding that the standard 120k kits everyone sells includes the seals and all other parts that - if any of them fail, endangers the belt. If a pulley or stud fails, the belt fails. If a seal fails, oil can get onto the belt. If the water pump fails, it could endanger the belt. etc, etc. I want piece of mind. I just bought my timing belt kit from Z1 for their black friday special ($100 off!) and was hoping to watch your video to see how you did the seals hehehe. I will be reviewing your video for getting everything apart and everything back together, but I'll have to find another guide for the seals. Oh, and I'll be replacing the o-rings in all my A/C piping tubing also, since I have a leak somewhere. I've been without A/C for over a year, and it seems logical to fix that while I have the front apart (I'm going to pull the bumper off and airbox out while I work on it.) I might even sneak a pop-charger into the budget while the wife isn't looking ;) I'll be starting my timing belt job next week. Wish me Luck!

12:45 "if you've got an A/T" haha "you'll have to take the starter motor out." WRONG! Just put the 27mm socket against the nut with a long, breaker socket wrench and put the handle of the wrench up against the car. Then bump the starter quick (that means crack the engine for 1/2 a second, then turn it back off quick) and voila... the nut comes right off. To put the pulley back on use a strap-wrench and put it around the pulley and hold it in place by pitting the handle of the strap wrench against the frame of the car and crank it down to 165 ft/lbs. Do this also with a manual ... well, the taking the 27mm nut OFF ... to make her life easy :D ... either way, having an A/T isn't such a bad thing after all ;)
@rtardbox8 жыл бұрын
***** to be honest, i rarely ever disconnect the battery when doing mechanical work like this ... i dunno why it's recommended at all, to be honest. but, if the nut does NOT crack then you have to give your battery a full charge or replace the battery or you have a weak starter motor ... but if the battery is charged and healthy and the starter is healthy then the nut will crack even if it's rusted on

you used a torque wrench to loosen a bolt? wow
@thirdpedalnirvana5 ай бұрын
Well I had previously used a breaker bar with a pole to loosen a crank pulley bolt on a Prelude, and the end of the bolt sheared off inside the crank. So getting it out clean with minimal effort was a thing to celebrate
