In this video, you learn about which E-motor and inverter we are choosing for our '99 Jeep Wrangler conversion. Some basic RPM, gearing calculations starting from the vehicle top speed guide you towards our Cascadia Motion E-Drive system with a gearbox. We also prepared a weight analysis of the Jeep before and after conversion, so we know how many batteries we can use. Special star guest in this video: my cat, Billy 😂.

Another interesting and clever conversion by 'Electric Classic Cars' used a tesla unit located where original transfer case is, So the drive shafts to fwd and aft axles come out of Tesla unit where Left and Right wheel used to be. I don't know details about ring & Pinion Reduction in axles was dealt with - they must have done something for that.

At a typical energy density of about 0.2 kWh/kg for bare modules, 250 kg for the complete battery implies less than 50 kWh, which is enough for a functional Jeep... the bigger problem may be finding space for the module. At a density for the Mach E's LG modules of about 0.36 kWh/L, 50 kWh would be about 140 L... plus all of the mounting, wiring, and enclosure space. The range with 50 kWh while pushing this barn door might be about 200 km. It will be interesting to see how it actually works out.

Yes! I'm currently converting my 1981 DeLorean into an EV. For all components, I went with a 2019 Chevy Bolt EV - so I have 66kWh of brand new LG Chem batteries, a 150kW electric motor with integrated single-speed transmission and differential, and the inverter is the one straight from the car with matched specs. Your weight analysis looks good to me! I think 250kg would translate to about 55kWh and a range of around 165 miles (estimating, since the Cd*A is probably pretty bad on a Jeep, so maybe ~3 miles/kWh). Be sure to take into account how much your battery boxes will weight, cooling plates, all that stuff. I think it's easy to add up without realizing it.

Interesting contents. Love to see comprehensible explanation and all the conversion process. Conversion exsiting gasoline/diesel/LPI vehicle is good way for upcoming electrified veheicle era, since scrapping all the parts of the vehicles on the road takes huge amount of wastes to deal with. With conversion, like the Jeep's frame, some parts can be still used rather than disposed. Anyway, love to watch video in this channel.

Oh man, that's amazing you were able to get 3d scans and then 3d print them at 1:4 scale!! That's fantastic - super helpful. I tried to use the POP 3d scanner to do the same on my conversion, and it just failed horribly. I could not get any reasonable full-size scan even though I spent about a dozen hours on it.

I have a few questions Dr. veronika, If the battery is replaced by a generator and the engine is still being used, how do we determine which generator to use and what other equipment is needed? does the generator have to be more powerful than the electric motor or vice versa?. in my place hard to find electric batteries and rare charger station. Your videos with technical content have cleared many doubts and helped to understand the path to this. Great treatment of the calculations surrounding the selection. In your application, how did the torque off the line with your new 11.19:1 ratio compare with the original first-gear launch? If I have the right data and am computing correctly, the total drive ratio in high first is 14.62:1.
@ElectrifiedVeronika
@ElectrifiedVeronika Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question Brian. Of course the biggest difference with "off the line" torque comes from the fact that the original engine torque curve is VERY different from the electric motor torque curve which has (basically) full torque at 0 rpm. In fact, we are planning on limiting the power delivery at low RPM's so we don't break things as the electric motor, especially with the 3:1 gear reduction, has the ability to supply significant torque at low RPMs.

@@ElectrifiedVeronika thanks for your response. It's a pity you did not include the Dana in your cost analysis. Thank you very much for the suggestions. We know both of these companies and have talked to them. We definitely thought about it but went a different route because we wanted a switchable 2w/4w drive and the Tesla ldu doesn't give us that.

Weight of transmission for 2 vs 4 wheel selection is concerning. I wonder if adding a second motor weighs less.

We were thinking about two motors, one in the front, one in the back (see episode 2), but that would have made us get a bigger VCU and of course two inverters..might be something to look into for the next conversion 😊

You mentioned that two motors separately driving front and rear axles would be very expensive and you worried about matching speeds and retaining 2x vs 4x4 functions. But ... two used Tesla front drive units with inverter would be under $4K and the Cascadia is $12K. Using the complete Tesla drive units would mean saving some weight eliminating the Jeep differentials front and rear, but would require (probably) custom half-shaft drive axles. And syncing the two motors and powering only front or rear to retain 2x and 4x4 funtionality could be done electronically, no ? Even choosing the single-motor configuration you have, a brand new motor used in the Mach-e is $4K and the matching inverter $1800. There are so many used or newer options, I don't think many DIY people would choose the expensive Cascadia products.

We are now starting a conversion with two E-motors - one in front, one in back - and another one with one used Leaf motor - that will significantly bring down the cost. Stay tuned for that! We are really happy with the Cascadia Motion E-drive because everything is integrated and all set up and communication with the VCU is enabled and proven.

Engineer here... In the RPM, Gearin, speed analysis where you solve step III on the board. That part made absolutely no sense to me. Doesn't mean it was incorrect. seems like you skipped a few steps on the board. Would you mind explaining how you got that wheel RMP of 1084?
@donaldwright7194
@donaldwright7194 2 жыл бұрын
1mile=63,360in, 100mph=6,336,000in per hour. If the circumference of the wheel is 97", then each time the wheel goes around once, you cover 97". So, 6,336,000/97=65,319 rotations per hour. Then divide by 60 to change from rotations per hour to RPM, so 1088 (close to 1084...pi*d for a 31" wheel is actually 97.34" not 97"...)...

did you take into account the gas tank weight when its full of gas? this could give you extra battery capacity

100 mph is ridiculous for a Jeep and achieving it will greatly reduce your rang. Probably 80-85 should be max and even that is optimistic.

Hey engineer, sorry you seem to be confused about this. I am getting a combined on board chargers plus dc/dc converter. The on board charger converts ac to dc when getting power from an ac source (like a level 2 charger) and the dc to dc converts the high voltage bus from the HV battery down to the 12V needed by many parts of the vehicle and to charge the 12V battery. And then dc to ac is the vehicle inverter for the traction motor. Hope this clarifies it, more to come soon in case you are still interested.
