G'day, this is just a video of me explaining how to replace a main motor capacitor as well as an idler in an Electrolux, Simpson and Westinghouse Clothes Dryer. All those models are exactly the same. Hope this helps someone.

I have the same Westinghouse dryer, it's always been stiff to turn. Thanks for showing the idler and the capacitor replacement, I went looking for your video to see if the polarity of the capacitor mattered and you say it doesn't, so that's all good. I wish I'd seen your video earlier as your method of taking off the back was much quicker and easier than mine...

Bridget hi! Haha thanks for the stellar comment! You've definitely made my day :D And sure we can be friends. Sub to my channel and cheer me up every now and then lol. It's difficult to get cool subscribers willing to like and comment my vids. And lol, I'll try and clean my pond up before showing anymore of it... but like the idea of showing stuff like that and having more of a relaxed approach to youtube content :) Thanks again!

Hey just fixed my dryer because of this video (same model). Interestingly that my fault seemed to be a combination of the spring holding the motor dislodging itself and also the bearing where the drum connects to the dryer back completely being shredded. Found an identically sized bearing for $1.80 from local HW store and dryer is back up and running. I guess it’s pretty old now so not sure how long it will last but I really appreciate this video mate. Well done!

Did one of these idler bobbin jobs when I was living down in Tassie. Saved a small fortune. Where most would have hurled it out, I had time on my hands, like you seem to do, and broke out the tools. Ain't done the capacitor gig before... so thanks for that. Cause we have a praaaablem once again with another version of the same model (SDV401). Only this time the symptoms are different. So I shall approach from the shallow end, money wise, and take it one step at a time. I ended up creating a service 'window' right next to the motor, (with an angle grinder). In case it went pear-shaped again, I wouldn't have to pull the whole back off it to look in. Had to make a cover, of course. Used the side off another gloss white tossed out unit, and some metal self-tappers. Worked well. Tx Man! Great stuff.

Good luck mate, It probably hums when the load of washing is heavy and when it's light it probably spins. Just make sure you pull the capacitor out of your machine first and buy the same one. It's probably the same in all Simpsons but best to be sure. Let me know how you go 👌

I can buy a replacement wiring harness for 60nzd plus gst. Do you think I should still use the heating element? What is the normal ohm reading including the thermostat?

@DIYDumpRat
@DIYDumpRat 2 жыл бұрын
@@Aussie3225 Too be honest no I haven't. I know when you put the spring on there's bit of a ledge on the motor casing that the spring can sometimes get hung up on so I always make sure I push the spring off to the side of it. But if you do what I do and test it thoroughly by turning the drum a dozen times in one direction and a dozen in the other when testing that the belt is in the correct position (before putting the back on) it really shouldn't do that.

@DIYDumpRat
@DIYDumpRat Жыл бұрын
Thanks Flower Cool, honestly I don't think I've come up to that problem before where the spring comes off on it's own. Normally the belt comes off and the sudden release can cause the spring to pop off. I'm not sure sorry. It's obviously something very minor that over time is causing it to do that. Perhaps just keep trying and when rotating the drum by hand to settle the belt with the back off just do it in both directions for a lot longer. Here's another video of me putting a belt back on which might be a little clearer to this earlier video that most people watch. If you notice at 26:17 I quickly push the spring so it's slightly sitting over the motor. It's not a big deal whether it's on the side like it previously was or pushed over it like I did. Maybe leave it off to the side in your case. I do push it back to the side at 26:44 though. Sorry I can't be anymore help. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aKx0mrCd0ZapY4k.html

@@DIYDumpRat Thanks for replying this video was very clear ive been rotating it back and forth and it seems that the belt is going higher then the rotating shaft hence why the belt is coming off and then when open it i see that the spring has come off the belt does move up and down but when it does rotate upwards it goes higher and then right off

@@Unkown_278i just had the same issue with the spring. Taking the spring off and putting back on the other way around fixed the problem for me - so now the part of the spring that was attached to the motor is now attached to the body of the dryer and vice versa

Thank you I learn a lot from your video.. I'm from Philippines. I just ask if the idler have some crack in the middle and not perfect circle.... It's created a noise?
@DIYDumpRat
@DIYDumpRat 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, mate your idler really does need to be 100% perfect as far as shape is concerned. A lot of the time you'll see a hair line crack in the center close to the core. This is actually quite normal. I see it on more and more idlers these days. They still can last quite long time. But Idlers with bits missing and broken off pieces should be replaced for sure.
@basictechtutorial9356

But why the dryer when it spin..thiere is a noise.. The bearing is okay.. Theirs a possibility that the motor have a cause of the noise..? Thanks for responding

I see the idler is not perfect curve. Where the belt attach
@DIYDumpRat
@DIYDumpRat 2 жыл бұрын
@@basictechtutorial9356 Oh I see what you're saying. You have a high pitch noise when the dryer is turning? If the bearing is ok then it is most probably your idler. I only just discovered this very recently, but if you pull the idler off and look inside the center metal core you will see some score lines in the metal. It's this tiny little defect that is causing the squealing sound. Very hard to see but they are probably there. I fixed it once by sanding the inside with some sandpaper wrapped around a small rod... as well as adding some grease. But you're much better off buying a new idler if you can. Just remember to clean the shaft that the idler sits on so that it's smooth like glass. This really helps as well 👍

@DIYDumpRat

Yep absolutely. The most common reason. If it hums you need a new capacitor. Sometimes you can even get it going by spinning the bowl (empty) and quickly closing the door while the timer is already set to the on position.
