Had the same thing happen Jeff?, and ended up throwing the belt off. Same fix as you. Just curious if yours had a circlip at the end of the pulley shaft? Mine has a slot but no circlip. I put one on anyway. Now all good. Cheers man!

Thanks for video. A while back my belt on a Bosch dryer came off and a was able to reposition easily without taking all apart. But the Simpson wasn’t so easy. Just FYI, my neighbours house burnt to the ground due to a fire from dryer lint. And years ago my ex mother-in-law claimed her dryer didn’t work and when I checked the lint filter it had never been cleaned. She was not that switched on and Father-in-law was not clearly at all handy.

Haha classic! I've never had someone ask me that in regards to dryer repairs. This is just a side line job. I make women's corsetry full time and am constantly dressing and undressing girls for fittings. Hi Amanda, I'd probably just keep an eye on it. It's not making any unusual noises which is the main thing. A lot of the time dust and lint makes it's way to the heating element and gives off a burning smell. Dryer repair men love it because people freak out and call them immediately. I don't really know anything about that model but I know that the Simpsons, Electrolux, and Westinghouse models can't catch on fire due to the heating element and lint. There's nothing but metal around it and the clothes are in the bowl totally separate to the heater. The lint just sizzles away giving off a burning smell. Most of the time the burning will come and go. But please make sure you monitor it carefully. Like I said I don't know the inner working of that model. If it persists you should see if you can take the back off and if you have a leaf blower go to town on it. Even a vacuum cleaner. I do that in my videos all the time. You'll be surprised how much lint can build up in there. p.s With the models I mentioned above sometimes the idlers (plastic pulley wheels) lock up and the belt keeps rubbing away at them. This certainly does produce a burning smell. But within no time at all the idler perishes and the dryer breaks down. Believe me you'll know about that if it's happening to your machine. Which is why I think is probably just lint 👍

G'day, sorry watching it on my small mobile phone I couldn't see a black ring but I think I've seen black lips on a few drums in the past. It's just discolouration. The front lip that goes into the front slot also goes black alot but that's just from wear I think. As for your dryer only spinning when you give it some assistance and stopping when it stops to go in the opposite direction, that sounds very much like you need a new new motor start capacitor. Classic symptoms. Very easy to replace I do it in most of my videos. They only cost me $7 each when I buy 20 at a time. Should cost you $10 - $15 for one on ebay. Best of luck 👍😎

G'day DMW, sorry for the delayed reply. Hmmm I'm not too sure. The only time I'd describe a dryer as having a thumpy type of sound is when it has the dreaded train 'track sound'. But that usually only happens if the dryer has been dropped slightly. It's normally a flat spot that develops on the lip of the drum that goes inside the door part of the machine. I made a video years ago of the issue if that helps. Otherwise I would just turn the drum with the back off, with the drum lying on it's face again and see if you can detect where it's coming from. @DIYDumpRat ah thats what it was! The ring of the lip that goes into the door had a bend in it, popped it back and it was good to go! I also replaced the rear bearing as it was looking looking or feeling fantastic. Thanks for all your help, really appreciate it!

In fact I'm about to release a video that identifies almost all bad dryer sounds and directs you to other videos I've made showing people how to repair them. Anyway I think that vibration sound is probably a loose fan or a fan that has mushroomed and needs to be replaced. I do have videos where I show you this. @@DIYDumpRat Thanks for replying, after watching one your other videos I checked the metal strut that the idler sits on and it was really rough at the base when I felt it, so I tried the wet sandpaper trick on it till it felt smoother and it fixed the problem. The idler must have been running rough and catching when reversing direction. Thanks for your help and videos, I saved money, landfill and got a sense of accomplishment.

But yes, now that I think of it the idler is designed to slide up and down so if the post is rough in one part it probably will run differently (vibrate/sound louder) . Good job and thanks!

Hi there. Hmmm, It's just a coincidence unfortunately. But it also may not be the heat sensor either. It might be the computer not reading it correctly also. A hard thing to pin down unless you have multiple parts to replace with and trouble shoot. Hopefully you just disconnected the wire leading to the sensor accidentally. And yes the best part about Electrolux and Westinghouse fully automatic dryers are that they also have manual timed cycles as well. So you can still use them safely. You just need to choose a 30, 60, or 90 minute cycle. Most of the time I find the timed cycles are a much better option than going fully automatic anyway, as those timed cycle help you save a lot more money in running costs. But if you want to look into the heat sensor and what might be happening and how to possibly fix it I did make a video a while ago doing that exact thing to a machine. Apologies for the delayed reply mate. Hey it could be anything. If it's that loud it sounds like the shaft holding the main bearing on may have sheared off, or the fan circulating the air is damaged. Sorry unless I see or hear it I can't tell unfortunately.

@@DIYDumpRat hey mate. I simply swapped the motors even though one was a bit older with the different capacitor placement and the motor had a slight rpm difference but it works perfectly now! I think the old motor had a burnt coil as the bearings felt beautiful still.

Yes mate indeed. That's terrible. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. Almost any electrical device can catch fire. But I'd say most of the time with dryers it's usually more likely the power switch that starts it. It's connected directly onto the plastic interface. I'd say the plastic is more likely to catch on fire than the metal housing. But I could be wrong. The amount of times I've looked inside to see a completely burnt out power switch and blackened plastic surrounding it is amazing. People who owned those dryers were very lucky indeed.

No problem at all Rhonda, well done for getting that far. What you're describing is completely normal. It happens all the time. The black stuff you describe is just the idler after it has melted. They can be a bit stubborn but all it takes is a bit of elbow greese. Just get a good grip on it and turn. Maybe even with two hands. It'll come off. Sometimes the metal core of the idler becomes so fuse to the post that it'll will remain after the plastic body part of the idler comes off. If this happens just grip it with a good set of large pliers and twist. I use multi grips all the time to remove them. They're great. If you still can't get the whole idler to break free by hand a good set of multi grips will definitely do the job 👍 Just remember that after you do get it off you'll need to really clean the post well, otherwise when you put the new idler on it will freeze up again. I use that 'Orange' citris cleaner stuff from Coles. It works great. Some times you will need to use some wet sand paper to clean it up first before using the Orange (wet 400 grit sand paper) . You want the new idler to guide up and down the post freely with no burs. I actually have made a video where that exact thing happened but I haven't uploaded it yet and don't plan to for a little while sorry. But just do what I said above and you'll do fine 👍

Rhonda I just checked another video I made of me doing an idler swap and the same thing is happening but to a lesser degree. Watch this video 🙂 Now at the end of this video the replacement idler fails as well when I test the machine. This happened because I didn't clean it properly before putting the new idler on. Excellent, that's what I like to hear. Give it a go, it's not difficult. And I'm not sure. You're best bet is to open it up and have a look first. It may not even be the belt or idler. If it's making a knocking sound it could even be a loose fan. Check out this video I made about replacing that part. Ball-bearing nut

No problem Benjamin glad I could help 👍 Hey listen, the only time I've ever found loose ball bearings is when the main bearing has broken. So check that out. If you look at the back part of the dryer you will find 3 screws holding down a small round metal disk. Basically where the pin on the drum sticks through. Undo those screws and you will find the bearing in there. It's a good thing you found that mate 👌

Pull the bearing out. Hold it between two fingers at the center and try and spin it with your other hand. If it feels grindy or crunchy you will probably need another one. If its locked up definitely. If it's just a bit grindy a lot of the time you can save them by spraying a little WD40 or other form of lube and rotating it. They get grindy due to dust getting inside.

Sorry mate I'm not sure on both accounts. I thought I must have just put a wrong belt on from a completely different machine. All the those machines should take the same belt. I do remember it being quite a bit thicker though. As for the heater. It could be anything. Heater, heat sensor, or computer. I'm lucky, I have lots of spares of everything. I just replace stuff until I get a good result. My money would be on the computer though.

Sabrina hi, thanks for your question. Too be honest you have me kinda stumped. Everything I would have said it was you've ruled out. That's only happened to me a couple of times and it was a slightly smaller belt I was trying to fit or I was pulling the tension on incorrectly. I would almost certainly rule out the dryer not being square. It almost sounds like the motor could have dislodged. But I'd really need to see it. When the belt isn't on the motor can you spin the motor with your fingers and it spins freely? I'm kind of grasping but maybe the fan had come off or loose and some how dislodged to motor. Almost sounds plausible seeing it happened in a sudden as you mention. I had a dryer the other day where the bowl had come out of the inner shroud lip and was on an angle. I think I put it down to a dodgy idler. So when you pull on the tension the bowl lifts out of the shroud lip right? and when you push it back (stretching the spring) and try to turn it it doesn't turn? I'm going to have to sleep on that one I'm sorry Sabrina. I reckon if I had it in front of me I'd get it in a heart beat. Let me have a think on it. I'm really sorry I can't work this one out straight away.

Fortunately, however, there's a decent amount of interest in the guts of my busted dryer so someone's going to get some parts for free. Glad to not send it to landfill. Anyway, this is a really interesting thought experiment and I'm keen to carry the knowledge I've gained from your response into my next DIY project. Really grateful for you taking the time and interest to try and resolve this for me! I know how frustrating it can be to not have the object in front of you, I'm sure someone with more experience would be able to fix it if they had their hands on it (but I'm very keen to move on with my life haha)

Hey sorry for the delayed reply. To be honest I've never come across that problem before. I had a possible reason in mind but its pretty silly but it's the only reason I could think of. And that was that the belt was put on back to front. Meaning that the smooth side of the belt was possibly going around the motors grooved part and there for over time shredding the belt. But I'm sorry I'll keep thinking about it, and if I can think of some thing will definitely let you know.
