Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.

Shaoshang's reaction to all of this really interests me. Knife at her throat, staring intj the eyes of a murderer, and she is quick enough to not only keep her wits but also formulate a plan to escape the secret room. Legit staring into a killer's eyes with no fear and manipulating him. Also when they step out of the room, she doesn't flinch when he again threatens her life but only flinches when watching someone else get hurt (the old woman's hand cracking). Really, if she had been raised as a warrior, there would be little difference between her and Ling Buyi. They're both ruthless its amazing to watch!!

The chemistry between these two screams another drama. Lei Lei is such a dream boat ❤

This man's acting is phenomenal. His facial expression at 5:30-5:32 mark is mind blowing in a mere 2 minutes of being the camera's focus. Don't watch his eyes, watch his jawline, cheekbones and throat in that moment right after he hollers "Don't move!". Every muscle, every tendon and ligament from his cheekbones down to his collarbone have gone to acting school - if you slow down the speed it is even more evident. This young man wears his character with every breath. I just enjoy watching him immersed in his craft. Beyond excellent. Similar to when she's removing the arrow from his pectoral muscle - the vein popping out of his forehead at the most painful moment. He's definitely chosen the right career. Seriousness aside, I have to laugh at the mother screaming at Xia to not worry about her and just 'run' - wtheck? They are all surrounded by the extremely skilled and physically fit Black Guard with weapons drawn and ready to tear down her home -where the heck does she expect this guy to run to without feeling a knife or arrow imbedded in his back before he even gets off the little bridge he's standing on? Why do the senior women in these dramas all become brainless or evil when they reach grandmother stage? Even Shaoshang's grandmother has fried gray matter - she raised a general for a son and now that she's a grandmother, all she dreams and thinks about are Shaoshang's betrothal gifts she can drool over, claim as her own, and 'store' in her own room. It is sort of sad the writers of these dramas take the senior women and turn them into fools who can no longer control their emotions, think critically, maintain their own dignity or contribute value to their family and community.

Now you need to watch "Amidst a Snowstorm of Love". I see his LBY character tempered by modern times but his eyes speak volumes. No need of a script at all. If you don't like just a very serious, straight romance, try "The Long Ballad". It has more action and intrigue like this one. As here, Wu Lei did his own stunts and they are even more impressive there.

Shaoshang’s grandmother didn't raise a general, it was her son's will to become a general 😂 especially because he met a beautiful and strong woman like Shaoshang’s mother who influenced him to such a decision. She is just a farmer woman from the countryside who typically dreams of a better, richer future. The chance arises for the males in the Cheng family to prove themselves in wartime and two of the brothers both choose their own way to contribute to the country. It's only that old greedy woman’s luck to have given birth to such good sons, really. And this woman from the Liang family was only a maidservant who slept with her master and bore sons. Of course, someone like her is stupid and greedy. Also, not all elder women in this series are portrayed badly. You should see the first few episodes again and remember the mother of General Wan. She seems like a great character, tbh. It's a shame that she doesn't appear more in the series.

4:47 Some would call him ruthless and unfeeling. True he is ruthless, but he is willing to annihilate an entire family for that feeling. The feeling of wrathful anger for someone daring to endanger someone he cherishes. And I love the contrast between him and the other who believes he “loves” her. Makes you wonder would the other be willing to sacrifice his family for her safety.🤔
