In Japan, we use a lot of English words (katakana words) but if I say those words in Japanese, do you understand? I asked people who speak English (but doesn't speak a lot of Japanese) to guess what those words are.

This is one English word where the vowels are pronounced non-insanely (judged by International orthographic conventions). Like the could be [ə] if unstressed but closer to [a~ɑ] if enunciated. (The "insane" pronunciations are [æ] and [eɪ].) And the would normally be [ɪ] in English but short [i] would be intelligibly equivalent. Apparently it's from Ancient Greek, χάρισμα. At first I thought the katakana was maybe "Christmas," but that would be a little different, クリスマス (kurisumasu) vs カリスマ (karisuma).

As someone who studies linguistics and Japanese, it's interesting that the way Yuta said it it would even take me a while to get. For example, he says boRANtia when in normal American linguistic stress, we would pronounce it boranTIa for volunteer. It's those subtle differences that can throw people off. When he says buckets, he pronounces it like bakeTSU, in stead of BAketsu with an almost silent tsu as English speakers would say. Knowing those pronunciations are the one of the reasons why it's so hard to speak with a correct accent when learning Japanese and Japanese people learning English because while the words are right, the stresses and the tone are off. Your brain takes in not just the words used, but the tone and stress in which it is used to understand a word.

I found it easier when he just said the word at a native pace rather than spell it out slowly. Like when he was speaking to the black girl (sorry that's the only physical feature I can go off) who knew a bit of Japanese, he was saying it really slow but when speaking to others it was quite quick and I found it easier to recognise. Like the girl who got 100%, he was talking quite quick
@Helveteshit

The Black Chick also asked for confirmation quite a few times, so it was quite evident that he had to take it a tad slower since she wasn't picking up on the undertones of the word or similar.

Many words also have slightly different meanings. For example, リフォーム (Rifoomu) comes from the English word "Reform," but doesn't have the connotation of political/religious reform. It actually means more of "renovation," like when redecorating your house. :P 改革 (Kaikaku) is more of the word you're looking for in the case of the English word "reform."

Much of the pronunciation is very difficult for an american to understand at first, but with a little bit of listening you learn to understand it fairly easily.

I got all of them pretty much instantly, but a few were pretty difficult. Twitter was probably the hardest, and rhythm also took a few seconds. I think that learning to pronounce katakana words correctly In sentences is probably one of the harder things for a native English speaker, the impulse to pronounce them natively is strong.

Based off this one and the one you did with Japanese guessing English words, I would say it's a tad bit easier for Americans. We are a melting pot of hundreds of different races. We are used to the different accents in day to day life.

The first couple times he said Volunteer I literally had no idea what he was saying, then after I knew what he was saying, I could hear it perfectly. It's so easy to understand now how Japanese have trouble hearing the difference between R and L. Even listening takes practice.

Its interesting that most of the words only make since if you say them fast. Also, it seems like knowing Japanese pronunciation made it harder for some people. When I just listened to Yuta without thinking about the kana I would hear the English word, but if I tried to break it down it wouldn't work.
