That isn’t green hair algae. It’s a filamentous bacteria similar to cyanobacteria and should be treated the same way. You poisoned your tank when it died. Your test kits can’t detect biologically bound po4. You were feeding bacteria tons of nutrients with that many fish plus dosing aminos. Look into Fauna Marin BioBalls and Rebiotic. And stop dosing aminos!

Cyano? Your mistaken… maybe camera didn’t do a good job showing it clearly but it’s algae able to be grabbed brushed and removed also eaten by fish. I’ll agree with the aminos and bacteria comment tho. Thanks for watching 💯

@@CJSAQUARIUMS I was in marine biology years back and it's def. Lyngbya spp. (cyanobacteria). Even though it looks just like hair algae, waves around like hair algae, and is filamentous it is not green hair/turf style algae. FYI Reef Flux is not for hair algae. It's for fungi or bryopsis (though not guaranteed to work). And what I see in your video does not act or look like green hair algae. The manufacturer states that it is not effective against turf algae btw. I really do enjoy your videos though!

@@CJSAQUARIUMS No worries. I used to get it in my ULNS tanks. If you're set on low nutrients I highly recommend a structured system that has developed ways of dealing with cyano. Aquaforest and Korallen-Zuch are good examples. Hope everything that has survived comes back 100%. Us viewers are there with you in spirit!

It probably was the combination, of a few things. Nutrients being bottom out and if you attempted to increase it. That along will stress the corals, then adding the medication just give them the extra push to die. Also you recently change your lights that is also a stressor….. I did something similar with that medication. I have used twice one with a crash vs one with success. For GHA I had issues with it for a long time and what got it under control was tuxedo urchins. Then my tangs cleaned it up as the urchin left a few patches

I've used reef Flux multiple times on my fully loaded sps tank with no issues. I think it's a combination of tank age, multiple changes to close to each other and nutrients being too low. That's the only thing I can think of since it's only SPS that died.

Tough break CJ this hobby can be brutal. This is your best build best looking forward to you bouncing back! Recently tried Vibrant in my nano to try dealing with bubble algae. Was informed of the drama surrounding it prompting me to stop after two weeks. Bought some more astra snails and after a couple more weeks they have removed almost all hair algae now I plan to throw a emerald crab in for the bubble. For me going forward I don’t think I will be messing with quick fixes. All my experiences have shown natural slower ways work out much better.

The cause would be probably the extra feed of the LPS corals & food left mysis soft shells that build up enough phosphate in the detritus NOT the water parameters. Generally any kind of tank started off from dry rocks will have an ugly face thus when you added sps they will probably be gone. Anyways it is what it is, keep doing what you're doing when the tank is more stable go ahead add back some sps. Never give up and keep up the good work! We have all been there. 💪💪

I’ve used Flux RX and ReefFlux and never had an issue with SPS or any other coral really. In fact I use it as a go to when hair algae gets gnarly. I actually had great success with a sea hare too, but you have to be able to move them on once they’ve done their job. I’m not a master by any means, and I love your videos, but just feels like you put the pedal to the metal so fast. You’ve got some many bottles and additives and supplements. 🤯 Either way it sucks, I’ve definitely been there too. But I’m sure you’ll bounce back like you always do! I have a 1200gal sps dominant system. I agree with a previous post, that this isn't hair algaes but instead the bacterial filament algae. Fluconazole is the right med for that. I use pharmaceutical Fluconazole. 4 500mg tablets which is a low dose. It will slowly kill off the algae over about 2 weeks. Key is to remove as much manually as possible. For hair and other normal algaes on rock the 3 best products I've found are reefbrite liverock enhance and liverock clean, along with britewell razor. Those are enzyme based products which not only devolve organic materials, algaes ect but are also food for coral.

@Reefkpr1 11 ай бұрын
Well that sucks! We all try and figure out what caused an issue but a majority of the time we are just guessing. My best guess is the Fluconazole started a chain reaction, with bottomed out nutrients, then a spike from the die off and being that the tank is so new, trying to find it's groove it was just too much for the SPS. As much as it sucked losing the SPS, the tank is still looking amazing.

Can’t fault you for trying something different on a new tank - maybe there were just too many different things all at the same time. On your IG live the other night, when you said the tank had been “fully stocked” before the algae started taking over, an alarm bell went off for me. I’ve had livestock in my tank for about 15 months now, and I’m still working on getting everything I planned. Maybe the basic principle of “patience” is what needs to guide you now. When you first started, with the JBJ45, you followed the rules that were known at the time, and you were hugely successful. Technology has changed, research has given us info about the importance of the biome, we can now use icp to learn what our systems lack and where we need to cut back, and we now can buy tailored trace elements to dose. What (imo) we can’t escape is that fast isn’t good in a reef tank and stability matters more than almost anything else. I’ve only started dosing traces within the last couple of months, after getting an icp done and identifying what was needed. I’m seeing crazy fast growth and now that I’ve figured out how to manage PO4, the sps I have are starting to get the right colours and everything is looking happier. But it’s taken a long time and I’ve been really careful. That’s how I’ve got my tank to where it is now but it doesn’t mean that’s what you need to do - I’m just thinking here, that the missing ingredient is patience. And hey - I think I know you well enough by now to wonder if you’ll be content with just watching the tank grow in. Lol, I suspect you’ll always want to do some kind of tinkering….and if it’s only one thing at a time it’ll be less likely to cause problems. I apologise for the loooong comment, but I watched this video last night, and I’ve been thinking carefully about what I wanted to say. You’re really talented and I (selfishly) want you to stay in the hobby so we all can enjoy what you share with us. I believe a successful tank is the best guarantee of that. 💪🏻

I took a major risk starting the tank with new methods I’ve never used before and following a plan building a biome and it worked at first. The issue was after the start.. what’s next? There is no info on what to do after loading the tank how to avoid bottoming out with a fully loaded tank especially one started with hybrid (probiotic salt) which in itself was a crazy attempt by me starting with carbon dosing. I’ve now changed salts due to this and will discuss in another video . I’ve learned alot from this even that I misdiagnose the issue as alage when in fact it was really a form of Cyano that looked like alage (see pinned comment in this video). I still believe this would have worked if I never started with my export (scrubber skimmer) running 24/7 and allowed the huge amount of corals to naturally handle the nutrients. I’ll relax for awhile and when the time comes reload the tank again for round 2. Definitely enjoy the long thoughtful comment and I’m here to stay and share this tank till the mission is accomplished. Thanks for watching as always 💯

I had the same issue with both my N03 & P04 bottoming out in my frag tank which resulted in me losing many frags. Your problem is that you're using something you should not be using at the stage you are at. Your tank is not a year old yet, and you're still prone to the ugly phase. Dosing this in this early stage is steep backward. You're still going to have algae and blomes for a year or 2 until the tank fully matures. At this point, a clean-up crew and maintains is all that is needed at this point. Short cuts are only going to lead in crashes or loose. I been doing thus for 20 years and been down this road. Slow and steady is what is needed.

One thing for sure is it's not the Flucanasol. Best way of handling that hair algae would have been Mexican turbos. You are right about the nutrients being stripped due to the algae. The irritation and ultra low nutrients are absolute SPS killers. Also if the algae dies and if not removed it will spike nutrients and lower pH. Just my 2 cents and sorry for the setback but brighter days ahead.

If you are having issues with low/zero nutrients you should be staying away from stuff like microbacter 7 and clean. Those will decimate the nutrients in a newer tank. Its basically just another form of carbon dosing. You have way too many things exporting nutrients for such a new tank. I would get rid of the algae scrubber for now, stop dosing any kinds of bacteria or carbon, run the skimmer only half the day. Let the tank get a little dirty. Ive used Reefflux once, and i had a very similiar outcome with my sps. I believe the people who have success with reef flux have much more mature systems, making them more resiliant. New frags in a new tank i dont think handle reefflux very well.

Ugh, @cjsaquariums this really sucks man. That sinking feeling and the pit in your stomach as you watch those gorgeous corals go overnight is never fun, but we all have losses, just gotta pick ourselves back up and do better 👍 So much was going on that it's probably impossible to pin down a single event as the cause, but stability is king. Changing lights, salt and adding amino's and chemicals all in 6 months is a lot of change for our glass boxes. Algae often consumes the nutrients in tank as well, so you can often get low or zero readings when in fact they would be super high but the algae is consuming them all - know what I mean? Anyway, be eazy. Keep doing what you do

Sucks that you lost your critters. Are you monitoring pH, CJ? I'd expect the decaying algae to have negatively impacted pH such that the SPS would suffer. I've had great success with Reef Flux (for bryopsis) and the Reef Flux/ChemiClean combo (for cyanobacteria), but one needs to be ready for the drop in pH and potentially the resulting alk spike because the corals are pissed. An alk spike alone shouldn't be enough to hurt healthy SPS, but add to that the increased spread (similar to what happened when Mok-Yi switched to out lensed bars for Blades), reduced spectrum, suppressed pH, and algae guts in the water, I'm sure the tank wasn't a fun place to live. Half to quarter dose may have been effective, and something others should consider when using Flux. Instructions don't care about corals. The instructions are only relevant to the target organism.

Definitely had a ph and orp drop when first introducing it. Followed by a spike in alk from tank not consuming anymore. Instructions hand cuffs you by not letting you do water changes or running carbon. Creates a super toxic environment in general. At best I could only run skimmer with cup off to help ph air from outside and ride it out till the algae was gone before I could abort the mission before the recommended 2 weeks. I believe a 1/4 dose would have done the trick after the fact since a full dose knocked all algae out less then a week. My main issue was also the carbon dosing from the hybrid salt and aminos , microbacter 7 all making me ride close to the 0.0 po3 po4 line during this entire time WHILE still growing crazy alage. I’ve sense changed ro regular reef salt and will make a full video explaining the risk I took trying to start a tank with probiotic salt. End of the day a lot of lessons learned happy to share. Back to doing things my old way much easier to predict removing carbon dosing. Thanks for tapping in 💪🏾💯

@@CJSAQUARIUMS Have always appreciated your old way, so looking forward to the ride. Regarding your findings, another consideration is that MB7 will drop pH, and the addition of its various bacillus species could have done interesting things to the biome you worked hard to create. That's a could, and without data, is a guess. An AquaBiomics test would be interesting.

I honestly just think it was too much too fast, even the water changes this early in the game aren’t healthy IMO. It was definitely a combination of a lot of things, a “fully cycled” tank isn’t the full answer, I even think running the algae scrubber this early in the game is too much, that kind of stuff shouldn’t come online til months and months down the road (just my .02) Love the videos and the stoke! Keep it up.

If you've got hair algae your nutrients definitely haven't bottomed out. They can bottom out when it's grown out, but then you'd see it start to recede again.

That sucks man. I have never used Reef Flux myself. You will come back with bigger and better SPS. just sucks that you lost all that money. Reefin ain't easy all the time. We all accept the challenge when we decided to set up tanks though!.

SPS will not handle rapid changes very well. They have to have a mature “stable” environment. The quick fix is not good when keeping SPS. I didn’t forget about getting with you but I’m Kinda glad that I haven’t yet.

Too much fish, too much coral, all at once. There is no safe way to expedite the process of creating a reef tank. You will suffer losses and continue to do so until you let things settle and mature. I don’t see how this hobby can be fun if you jam your tank instantly and have nothing to build on. It’s like getting a television, you just buy it and turn it on, that’s it. You aren’t treating this like a project. A reef is not something you can just buy. I hate to say it but this tank will be a systemic coral and fish killing machine for quite a while until you put the credit card down.

@@CJSAQUARIUMSSorry for coming off harsh. You have a formula and i’m sure it’s going to work eventually. Looking at your past videos, this really isn’t a brand new tank. It’s been up for like 4 months from my observation. Which is entirely old enough to do things even by the old head reefer book. Just keep doing what you’re doing. Anyone in this hobby has killed coral. It’s the nature of the beast.

I would say go back to reefing 101. 1 thing at a time. Having algae and testing at 0 doesn’t mean it’s true. Keep it simple water changes uv if you want. Test your water before you mix your salt

The problem is you have much money for paying in wrong toys. Keep it simple. -Test ca alk mg no3 po4 by your hand use cheap test such as salifert. - dose ca mg alk and keep them stable. Dose no3 po4 amino acid with very little. - Feeding fish and coral much, dont care about no3 po4 in this phase. -Water change every week. - dont change light or spectrum when you already set up them for at least 3 month. - algea: your hand and tang fish is best weapon. - ich on fish: just keep feeding them much with frozen or fresh food and dont use any medicine, they can dead, buy new one.
