Episode 5! Adding a Sarca Ex-cel anchor and reinstalling the Lighthouse 1501 windlass.

In this episode I mainly tackle the process of reinstalling the Lighthouse 1501 windlass that I had refurbished and it n stalling the new Sarca Ex-cel anchor.
I’m still working on other projects on this Hardin 45, and most things are coming together nicely... that pesky engine though...

I love all the engineering that needs to be done to do these tasks alone. So cool. It just shows how that big brain of yours works. Kind of a bummer about the engine, but when it’s done and paid for having a brand new engine and the peace of mind that comes with that will be totally worth it. Thanks for bringing me along on your journey.

Another engaging video Onno, love it! I was surprisingly captivated by the refinished block & tackle shot, when you lowered your new anchor into the dinghy lol. Truly sorry to hear about your engine Onno, I understand that's not a cheap touch ($$$). If it had to happen, at least you had support & parts nearby, & the hands on experience will be another tool in your box. Thanks so much again, take care! :)

Hi! I'm curious as to your decision making to not add a swivel attachment to the anchor. It seems a very popular thing to do. Thanks for responding! Love the channel as I'm a single hander as well and have had to come up with inventive ways to get work done.

Hola! Thanks for watching! The swivel does have some convenience as it can help prevent the chain from twisting up. It just seemed like another failure point to me and the flip link does a good job of orienting the anchor over the bow roller. In an anchorage with lots of tidal reversals or such, the chain can get rather twisted over time. Once in a while I do untwist it if need be.

@@OnnoKok Hi and thank you for your reply! I’ve heard from some sailors the same thing about swivel hooks inducing a twist into a chain as well. In the end there’s a lot of factors that will come in to play and you just have to keep an eye the the chain regardless and be proactive on keeping the chain in good order. Cheers!

You always need the ability to plug into shore power. What were you thinking?

Thanks for watching! Why would I need that ability? If I really needed to charge my batteries while at a marina, I could use a 110v battery charger and an extension cord. I’ve been living on the boat full time for over a year and have yet to see the need for shore power.
