Epoch is a minimal cover shooter that takes more inspiration from light gun games than Gears of War. This means that there is less of a focus on checking flanks or movement and more of a focus on aiming and taking cover. Bind the mouse exclusively to the gyro and enjoy some arcade-y shooting action while getting better at gyro aiming. [steam controller, dualshock 4, switch pro]

I've enjoyed gyro aiming in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (I assume this will apply the MGS V: The Phantom Pain as well). It's UI is heavily built for controllers, but the Steam Controller gives you access to mouse like aim. The game has a suppressed tranquilizer that falls with distance, but rewards shots to the head so your aim has to be adjusted for such. Since it's a stealth game (meaning enemyies are usually walking slowly or standing in place) and given you want headshots, its good for practicing precision aiming which is important because you need your hand to be physically steady when using gyro aim. For me personally, it also helped me get into using touchpad for movement as well. Another game I liked, if your willing to do it, is emulating Splatoon and playing the single player. The game introduced many people to gyro aim in the Wii U era, doesn't require too much aim precision and since the emulator (Cemu) can nativley take motion input, there is almost zero set up involved for the gyro itself. Since the game was made with Gyro in mind it works out pretty well.

I'd like to try gyro aim at Wild Guns Reloaded, I got the game in the Summer sale, but I didn't try it yet. Also, I don't know how the Steam version works, I just played it on the SNES, using a single D-Pad as aim and movement.

I think the best way to improve the gyro aim is try somo quake live cs matches... (kidding, but I do it :D) I try even some mmos like: dungeons and dragons oline, with a archer, and albion online too. To me, if the user wants to master the movement based aim he needs to use the gyro for all things that involve any mouse imput.

Everyone has different needs so I try to make videos for everyone. I started on CSGO and Dirty Bomb, playing Competitive and starting in the same skill pool as I was with the mouse+keyboard. It was like learning to swim by drowning in the deep end of a pool. And I learned quickly due to it. But not everyone can handle that frustration. Most people would recommend games with low failure penalties like Portal or Borderlands. Those definitely work but they still throw an entire controller's worth of bindings on top of the game's spatial requirements. Games like EPOCH -- or even pure light gun games -- are just another starting point for players. If this is too easy then try out Portal. If that is too easy then jump right into online games. Everyone has different personalities and learning processes so it's good to have an open idea about what a starting or beginner's game looks like. However, I 100% agree that mastering mouse control with a controller means using the controller for all mouse movement. A few months ago I issued a challenge on the SteamController and SteamInput subreddits to take the mouse off of the desk for a month and use the controller for every single mouse based input on their PC.

I'm biased and 100% think that touchpads are better than sticks. But I think the gap is less noticable when you include the gyro. While the Steam Controller is my primary device I do use the Dualshock 4 occasionally since I really want to find a great FPS config for dual stick controllers. The touchbar is just a little out of reach so I have to find a good way to activate the gyro. But even without finding a way that suits me perfectly I still do really well with it because of the gyro aim.

Wait, wasn't Epoch a mobile game? I played both Epoch 1 & 2. It's definitely fun though.

Yup. I was actually introduced to Uppercut games through the mobile version of EPOCH. I never got a chance to play EPOCH 2 though. It was removed from the Play Store before I could buy it and they never made a PC port. It's currently only available on iOS. I also snagged Submerged and City of Brass (since Uppercut has all their games on sale) so I'm excited to see what they've done since Epoch.

@@criticalinput yeah, I also played both Epoch 1 & 2 on iOS back when iPhones were actually good and not overpriced lol. Sadly I sold my iPhone 6+ (as it has begun to show its age with faulty issues), so I only have my iTunes account to show me my old games. Epoch 2 is pretty much like Epoch 1, but with newer weapons, the typical-but intriguing "runaway-turned-rebellion fighter" story, and pretty much minor changes that makes it suitable to be the sequel. Nothing groundbreaking though.

Kill Switch, a 2003 cover shooter that I'm pretty sure was the origin point for the modern day cover shooter. It predates both Rogue Trooper and Gears of War -- both of which typically get mis-attributed with creating the genre.
