I still dont understand. I'm searching about this kind of tutorial. I want to have more control on my Right Trigger button for throttle, and I want my Left Trigger button for Brake. Simply i want to adjust my triggers sensitivity. What happens is that when I press my Right Trigger button, it is instantly at full throttle. Unlike when I tried a steering wheel w/ pedals i had more control of the speed of the car.

I'm not sure what the modern UI looks like but in this older one you would want to leave the Soft and Full Pull Bindings blank since those are digital bindings. You would want to use the Trigger Analog Output setting and change it from Analog Off to either Left Trigger or Right Trigger, depending on which button you're wanting it to be assigned to. This will give you an analog binding which is used for fine control of an axis.

Yes, but it was difficult to work with and there's a hard limit to how long of a combo you can do. You have to use a series of Activators where each has a little higher "Fire Start Delay". When using a radial, it is necessary to tilt the Joystick towards the desired radial option, since it required a button like the RB so that the radial command prepared to have an action is carried out. It is uncomfortable for me to have to tilt the Joystick over and over again to the chosen radial to perform the action because I tend to accidentally tilt the Joystick to another side.

what response curve does first person shooters like COD or Apex use? Wide, Extra Wide or Relax?

Most developers will create a custom curve for their game that most likely can't be replicated in SI. Not to mention that it will be paired with acceleration that also acts on a time based curve. I don't believe Steam Input supports that. You might be able to make a macro to do that but there isn't any in built process. And even the macro is gonna be more work than it's worth since you'll be making a series of activators with varying amounts of start and end delay.

The ability to use simultaneous opposite cardinal directions (SOCD) is significant for fighting games. Some older games allow you to do "illegal" things if you are able to send both left and right movement commands at the same time. For example, in MvC3, it's possible to block in both directions at the same time, which is completely contrary to the design intent of the game. Needless to say, doing this sort of thing in a multiplayer match is tantamount to cheating.
@criticalinput
@criticalinput Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I'm a huge FGC fan and have been following the Hitbox chronicles for the last few years, including seeing how Capcom combat this with their new SOCD cleaning in SF6 (which is actually opening up some new tech that's still only possible with SOCD / Hitbox).

I don't want to disappoint but I think it's important to be transparent about the state of the channel -- I'm not coming back to it. I work full time on a different channel making 30+ minute breakdown and analyses of music, primarily rock and metal. Outside of tech my other passion is music. I have formal education in music theory as well as classical composition. And I use that to explain what makes your favorite songs so great. But even aside from not having time, 4 years ago I moved on from Steam Input and the Steam Controller and haven't looked back. I now use reWASD exclusively, starting with the Dualshock 4 and then moving to the Flydigi Apex 2, which is honestly the most powerful controller out right now (though I do wish it had a touchpad somewhere). So if I did find time to come back I'd be making content for reWASD. Thanks for the words of support though and I hope these tutorials serve you well. I know Steam Input has changed recently but the videos should still be accurate in explaining what everything does.

Over the last few years I've thought about coming back as I loved working on these videos. But I want to be transparent and honest -- it's not going to happen. I stopped using both Steam Input and the Steam Controller not too long after ending the channel. I've voiced my frustrations with Steam in the past and there were too many hoops to jump through just to play my favorite games -- many of which I own outside of Steam (I'm a DRM-free fanboy 😅). I currently use reWASD with a Flydigi Apex 2 and haven't looked back. This combination is immensely powerful and I never feel held back by either the software nor hardware. I do miss the touchpads though... Furthermore I completely replaced the 40 hour weeks of working on this channel with.....40 hour weeks working on a different channel. 😄 Over there I breakdown and analyze music, explaining why people's favorite songs are as effective as they are. As my online handle, CriticalComposer, suggests -- I am a composer and have academic training in music theory that I bring to the analyses. So yeah, I'm never coming back to finishing up the Steam Input Essentials series. My attention has completely shifted away from it. I wouldn't mind making some one-off videos about controllers and profilers in general, maybe make some more unorthodox configs to show off, but even that would require time I don't typically have much of these days. Not to mention that I don't know how many people are interested in a niche device like the Apex 2 using non-free software. I'm glad you've found what I did create here informative and helpful and I'm sorry that I won't be returning to add more videos. I wish I could point you in the direction of others doing similar things but sadly all the ones I knew have moved on as well. Even RambleTan (formerly ExistentialEgg), who was the biggest VSC channel alongside mine back in the day, is also a Flydigi + reWASD fan now so I can't recommend them either. At the end of the day, the VSC has been discontinuted for 3(?) years now and sadly there are few people, if any, still making content for it. With any luck the popularity of the Steam Deck with the (subjectively atrocious Steam Input UI update) will drive a new generation of video makers to dive into the intricacies of the software.

Is there any reason why with "trigger" commands on a Fightstick don't register in game? For example: hitting L2 or R2 on the controller does not do so in game even though the controller registers the input to the computer.
@criticalinput
@criticalinput Жыл бұрын
Could be a couple of things. First I'd make sure that the input is leaving Steam properly (gotta get a controller checker for that) then I'd make sure the game accepts analog inputs via injected emulation (which is how Steam Input functions). Worst case scenario would be using GloSI in tandem with Steam Input to get a global XInput driver for whatever game you're trying to play. Alternatively, switch from Steam Input to something else for this. Assuming your fightstick is a PS4 fightstick you could use wither JoyShockMapper (free but no GUI) or reWASD (paid but looks great and is easy to use).

For Steam Controller users, especially power users of the device, reWASD might be missing a couple of features but for 99% of situations it does everything I want it to do. The thing I miss most is overlay menus (Radial or Touch Menus in Steam) but those will be coming out soon -- my guess will be in the Summer update.

Because ive been playing for years just having to do the mental gymnastics and it sucks.
@criticalinput
@criticalinput Жыл бұрын
Short answer, no. Those icons/glyphs aren't created by Steam, they're done by the developers and (usually) hardcoded into the game. A LOT of PC games **ONLY** support Xbox controllers so those are the only icons that a developer will program into the game. As a PC gamer you might know that games files can be edited and you're right, some games have mods to change the buttons to PS symbols or the Nintendo layout. But a vast majority of PC games aren't moddable -- in that they either don't have a modding scene to make the tools or the engine/files are too esoteric to bother dealing with. So I'll say a generous 1% of the time you'd be able swap the glyphs out with ones that match your controller but 99% of the time you're gonna be doing the mental gymnastics. And, at least for me, it just makes more sense to learn the gymnast skills for 100% of situations.

@criticalinput
@criticalinput Жыл бұрын
So this could be two things -- either your config is wrong or the games in question don't like Steam's method of input sending. If your joystick is set to digital with WASD assigned to the four directions, you ran the game through Steam, and the controller still doesn't work then there's a good chance that the game isn't compatible with Steam Input. As far as I knew Valorant was the only game that detected this and blocked it but things might have changed. If that's the case then you'll need to use another profiler. And if Activision/Blizzard is doing the same thing Riot does with Valorant than the only software that will bypass their detection is reWASD.

looking into directinput it seems like it supports so many more features than xinput and seems perfect for gyro. I'm surprised we haven't had some sort of open source successor to it as Xinput seems ill prepared for the future, due to its limitations on the amount of controllers, buttons, and axis it can use simultaneously.
@criticalinput
@criticalinput 2 жыл бұрын
100%. DirectInput is more versatile than XInput in every way BUT it's more difficult for devs to work with because they can't expect the same inputs/names every time. If you played any PC game from pre-XInput you'll recall having to assign your buttons for every game. XInput brought Plug and Play to the table which made using a controller more convenient. But because of it's limitations you'll often find HOTAS and some racing wheels using DirectInput because of the need for more buttons/axes. There's pros and cons to both, and XInput could easily add more functionality to XInput to support Gyro or more axes of input. The stupidity is that they continue to lean on this archaic API while dominating the PC controller landscape.

Enjoy the drift. Then enjoy the compounding effects of drift over time with this software that sucks as much cpu as it does farts. Or check out what I do - no software, no drift, full bluetooth setup under 30sec.
@criticalinput
@criticalinput 2 жыл бұрын
Drift is a hardware issue based on the wearing down of potentiometers. Until gamepad creators opt to use the superior Hall Effect Sensors every gamepad with a joystick will experience drift. And it's actually software that can help overcome drift by altering the deadzone of a joystick. As for CPU usage, neither of these three software use up much at all. JSM is literally a command prompt and a library that reads a text file. It doesn't get less resource intensive than that 😄 And finally, you not using software doesn't make your setup better. Easier and faster, sure I'll give you those. But what happens in a game that doesn't support controllers? Or doesn't support the controller you prefer? Or doesn't allow button remapping? Or doesn't use all of the features of your controller? What about accessibility issues? I guess in your world you'd give up and obey the people who made the game in a way that didn't account for you. But profiler users are people who think outside the box and play games the way we want to play them. We don't let the slowly evolving industry standards dictate the way we enjoy our hobby. And software like these three are the tools that allow us to do that.

Glad it helped and I do hope the Steam Deck software is similar enough to transfer this info over. To temper expectations, this project will likely stay where it is. I don't have any intentions on making the last couple of episodes nor updating the information for the Steam Deck. Not only have I moved away from Steam's controller software but I work full time on a different KZfaq channel now.
