I am confused, why does this insane asylum continue to get public funding?
@theawecabinet
@theawecabinet 7 жыл бұрын
Because public funding always rewards failure with more money, whereas private funding always punishes failure by withdrawing financial support.
@wotmot223
@wotmot223 7 жыл бұрын
ahh, so public funding was the cause of the 1929 market crash? The TEC bubble crash in the 1990's?, Enron and the energy bubble in early 2,000's? The housing market crash of 2008? ( no, it wasn't lending to the poor, it was the greed of banks and the marketing of CDO's)? And public education, as bad as it is, is better than what existed before? The Damns canalsand rails in our country would not have occurred without public funding. You have a simplistic viewpoint. Greed, corruption, laziness and ideology, weather public, or private has more to do with failure. Well, that and stupidity.

Douglas Barnes soo... incorrect. it *is* a minority group. a small portion out of the entire student body. Anyone who has any understand about how state schools function and anyone thinking logically, would understand this. not looking for argument but it is a fact. - this school has night classes (for people looking to take only a few classes, not a complete degree. these people are still considered "students" ) - this school has graduate students - this school hosts international students - this school has *two* branches. evergreen state is an umbrella institution. 1. we have the olympia campus (the campus in the media right now) 2. we have the tacoma campus, a campus in a completely different city that aids to a completely different percentage of students. Both campuses are considered "the evergreen state college" because it has the same admissions team and you apply the same application. - this school serves a group of students for independent study. There are students out in the world right now that are technically evergreen students but they have nothing to do with the campus or its events because they're completing field work. the staff: - not all the staff participated in the protest. i had class during that time regardless. - not all everyone is a professor, the professors are a small minority of the overall staff. Keep in mind this school has a lot of hands in order to keep it running. For example: maintenance staff. staff at the daycare center. cleaning staff. housing staff. access service staff. admissions staff. board members. marketing staff. media staff. technology technicians. library staff. police services. dining staff. bookstore staff. ...and the list goes on. Essentially, closing the school would hurt the majority more than small minority of students that protest. Please educate yourself on how many hands it takes to run a institution. Wishing the closing does more harm to the *majority* this is a state school and it employs a lot of people in the city of Olympia. If the school refuses the demands the protesters will go somewhere else, case closed. Issue solved without having to leave hundreds of people without a school or a job.

YogGroove exactly. it would mean the administration couldn't put their foot down. I go to Evergreen and in my opinion: we're having issues because they allow administration and students to see themselves as equal. Where I come from, I'm taught to never question authority unless it's something thats life or death. There's this narrative that students have the ability to change the school and that's just not true, if you don't like it, take your money somewhere else. This is how all the other colleges in the country work.

f u not agreeing with the protest. quit trying to use this situation to "send a message" 😂 what kind of manipulation tactic is that? what makes you any different than the protesters in that sense? The protesters used fear and intimidation tactics. You're mindset: I'll chop someones head off and put it on a doorstep to scare people i dont agree with from voicing their opinion. You don't want the school closed because of its merit, you obviously want it closed to further your own agenda because it happens to follow the narrative of you're own personal beliefs. Please take your gross language and personal agenda else where. This conversation should only be for those capable of parting with their own personal beliefs in order to see the situation as a whole. You sound like a 14 year old who isn't capable of a constructive conversation. This is grown up talk, please go play call of duty or something.

I see the makings of a Broadway "Evergreen the musical" hit. I was fascinated by the part about their caucus demands. They want to separate down racial lines then come together and list their grievances/demands. This is the way the California prison system works when there are issues between the racial gangs. I've heard in the past that our education system was like jail, but who knew it was literal.

In regards to the latinx people demanding that they receive free Spanish classes in reparation for forced assimilation... I'm just confused. To play the devils advocate, isn't the Spanish language also a form of forced assimilation in when you take the indigenous people from Central and South America? Spaniards were colonizers too (as well as rapist and pillagers) and Spanish is a European (white) language in origin. Anyway, been watching all your stuff. I'm from Olympia originally and I'm glad someone is finally exposing this bullshit.
@erinlikesacornishpasty4703
@erinlikesacornishpasty4703 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct. When I lived in New Mexico I learned that the Spanish are the majority "colonizer", the indigenous people are the next largest group of people, and everyone else is considered an "Anglo". I.E. black people, Asians, and whites are all "anglos" in that context. It was a bit of a culture shock to see that perspective. It just shows you that everyone has been colonized or conquered at some point. Humans are humans.

*FROM A EVERGREEN STUDENT* This video was interesting. Excuse my typos. As a student here, I play the role as a customer and a guest. I disagree with the protest and I'm probably going to get backlash for it. I think it's important to realize that not EVERYONE agrees with this. Not everyone feels the need to speak up about disagreeing as well. To a lot of people, this was just a protest that happened. To some, it was no different than pro life planned parenthood protesters coming to protest on red square, it was distracting but for a lot of students it had no deeper meaning, it just happened. It was just the opinions of a minority. There are people out there like myself who couldn't care less. Why didn't I stop it? I don't feel obligated to. I'm an adult and those who participated where adults as well. I'm not obligated to babysit and I don't pay thousands a year to babysit adults. My 4 years is short lived in comparison to how long the school has been running and how long it might stand. In my opinion the only time you should directly cause conflict is if your ability to complete your degree is compromised in some way that's orchestrated by the school. This didn't happen. The protesters scream "privilege" but they fail to realize the privilege of education and being able to pay for a school. It might just be Evergreen but It's still a school. I'm sure in other countries someone would love to go to school and have that right to have some control over their future. It's sad and embarrassing to see people crying and debating about who's racist. As a person of color, I dont care about anyone's personal opinions. It has nothing to do with me. As long as the "racist" doesn't physically harm me or harass me, I have no concern. It's sad to be racist but it has nothing to do with me as an individual. Legit someone only disliking ONE portion of my identity without knowing me personally. The thing between me and the protest: the oppression I face isnt my identity. I don't feel to the need to go "I'm a gay, middle class, male blah blah.." I don't need to list stuff like that. It's a tactic the radicals at Evergreen use to shut other people up. I don't feel the need to play "who's more oppressed" I was taught to not question authority unless its life or death. I grew up respecting those above me. I think the issue is the message Evergreen sends out, the idea that students and administration are equals in terms of status and that just isn't true. As a paying student, I don't feel like I have the right to demand something from someone. Yes, I'm a paying customer but if I'm not getting my needs, I'll take my money somewhere else like most college students. Case closed. Trust in this: If there's really a issue 1. State of WA will cut funding until its resolved. 2. They'll see their numbers dropping and aid to the issue at hand. It just comes down to students not trusting the system and starting conspiracy. The school is federally funded, if it's actually breaking laws and discriminating(I'm talking actual cases of discrimination) it could get in trouble with the state because discrimination is illegal. The state isn't going to pay for a institution breaking the law. I think the false narrative here is that people assume the *ALL* the students and staff feel this way. This was a small portion. Why isn't anyone speaking up? Because the whole situation was so crazy that most people rolled their eyes and when on with life.

We want This paid position to be created. We want that paid panel be created. We want extensive modifications to this building. We want that building to be built. We want to double admin staff. We want 1 professor for every 10 students. We want no police & no rules. We want a safe environment. And finally, we want a 75% reduction in tuition. Sincerely Evergreen student body. lol You are right, they didn't really think things through. To be serious for a moment, I do like the idea of intensive classes where you really get to know the other students & professors. My grad school was set up like that & once you know & trust everyone it does create a unique & effective learning environment. Problem is, I think this entire Social Justice, Identity Politics thing has introduced a toxic element into an otherwise good concept.

Joseph Denor Yeah, good point. I suppose I mean it seems like a short-term grab for as many goodies/freebies as possible. They are demands for a reparations-based approach to justice (or at least an approach where they think past injustices can be ameliorated by reparations as an integral component of current justice); all this can only arouse suspicions as to how much they believe in the ideals of their cause.

It's a pyramid scheme. The professors exploit the students for cash to pay for their cushy careers and free field trips. They then teach the students how to exploit the rest of society for resources by playing the victim and voting for socialist governments. Those socialist governments then import millions of people from less developed nations who will also vote for even more socialism and eventually full blown communism. Free stuff for all!!! As soon as the system looks like it cannot take the strain anymore they will try to suppress free speech ...... oh wait...

I'm always amused by "Latinx." If they need a gender neutral version of the word, they could just say "Latin." I guess that would be denying the Spanish origin of the term by removing the suffix. But the suffix is there to specify gender. Gendered nouns are part of the language, which they want to remove.
@jeepersjava

I never understood why SJW’s will claim America and the English language are offensive and “colonizing” when other languages, specifically Spanish, have given nearly every noun and adjective a gender.

A question! How long do these kids plan on going to College? It only took me 4 years and I am working in the field I studied. I had so much homework and had to work at the same time while raising 2 babies. When I went to college , I went because I needed to learn about my chosen field from someone who had "been there done that" experience. It never crossed my mind that I would make or be permitted to make demands! I respected my Professors and was so grateful I was able to go to College. I paid my way through college for years after I graduated. I personally lived through segregation of schools and neighborhoods as a child and it was real! I went to school when kids were bused out of their home school and into schools where we became friends. As a kid, I looked at it as an opportunity to have more friends. At my 20 year High school reunion (many of us stay in touch throughout the years') all got together again and enjoyed each other's company! No one was counting how many Black people, Hispanic people, or Caucasian people were there! It was just old friends getting together. I can't believe what the College experience has turned into. I wish these kids could have gone to college when I did, but they would have had to live through the real struggles and from my point of view I don't think they would have made it! We worked hard, very hard and didn't have time for all of this crap!

The students *DO* understand how money works, in a political environment. The more extravagant demands were not serious, their purpose was to make the lesser demands seem "reasonable", so that administrators could seem "strict", by rejecting the most extravagant demands, and still give in to the demands the students really wanted. The leaders of the movement bring home concrete concessions, and are seen to win, and the administrators are seen to hold some sort of line on the demands. These are political entrepreneurs, who make their career by stirring people up, bringing concessions, and gaining contributions, positions, etc in exchange. Parasitic professional activists stirring up disturbances out of nothing seem to be a natural hazard of prosperous democracies at peace.

At 11:00, college professor Naima Lowe (sp?) claims that "every 28 minutes" a black person is killed by police (or people pretending/aspiring to be police) in the US. If this were true, it would mean every day 51.4 black people in the US are killed by cops! Which would mean every year 18,771 black people are killed by cops in the USA. Obviously, Lowe's claim is a grotesque exaggeration! In fact, 310 blacks in the US were killed by police in 2016. That's not one every 28 minutes, it's one every 1.17 days, or every 28 hours. mappingpoliceviolence.org Of course, the numbers are still way too high. Young black males in particular are still being disproportionally killed by police relative to the proportion they make up of the whole population. But is this because the police are racist? Or because young blacks males are disproportionately involved in gang violence & criminality? The Washington Post is creating a database of police killings, but it's still in early stages & so is a little hard to access. The upshot of Lowe's statement is that a person who doesn't know the difference between "every 28 hours" and "every 28 minutes" should be teaching at any level.

Benjamin Boyce wow. that's oddly convenient. mixing up 28 hours with 28 minutes make it more intense. i can see a ally or just the average evergreen student being easily lured in by just that mistake of wording alone. that's a alarming (false) statistic and with her being a professor of media, african american studies and just being a poc, i can see how no one would question her in her position. I've taken a class of hers in the past because im a ( edit:partially and part environmental sci) m edia student and we covered stuff like click bate titles, false narrative, how fear and shock value has hurt various communities in the past ...all of that good stuff. i just cant see that being a simple mistake. the delivery was so confident (i struggle with this) but i feel she taught that class that the foundation of successful media coverage and awareness is to: 1. inform without trying to persuade. 2. "shock" with actual shocking evidence. not "clickbait" ....a ton more. Do you know of any clips where the protesters were stating similar facts? I feel that I lacked the interest to fact check and if i had walked through red square during that time, that comment alone would grab my attention and draw me in completely. Because of her demographics, i wouldn't question her. im hoping its a simple mistake but if not, this is extremely alarming. its like "reverse propaganda" (if thats even a real thing) she basically "killed" more black people to grab attention and use the shock as a way to further her agenda.

I don't see even a handful of these demands being met simply because they were written by people with absolutely no sense of reality. But I also have demands, albeit only two: 1) Since the lands that Evergreen University are on were stolen from native Americans, the university and all aforementioned lands are to be returned to the native American community immediately without cost. 2) All non-native Americans are to leave the grounds forthwith.

Foxfire Pony you can have your demands met easily, all you’ve got to do is re-conquer those lands; to the victor goes the spoils. side note, RA contracts specifically enumerating "other duties" is kinda known to be a union tactic (I'm pro-labor union, generally) to disrupt by means of the fact that an infinite variation of events and experiences could arise, and RAs want to be able to demand, on the fly, at will, that "that's not my job and I refuse to help". One can imagine the disruption and lack of accountability that this will generate. In factory work, the complaint is it amounted to dozens or hundreds of people waiting around for an electrician to appear from break or other important work to plug in a machine power plug to a wall outlet or flip on a switch.

I don’t think shutting down the college would be the best thing to do. As a business owner I believe the smartest thing that Evergreen College could do in order to regain any notion of being a legitimate college and also for the benefit of the majority of students attending now and students that have attended in the past would be to cut this out like the cancer that it is. If it really is just a few hundred students and a couple of employees [professors, staff] they should get rid of them all. Expel the students and fire the employees. If they want what is best for this college, make it clear that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.

bjs301 incorrect. it *is* a minority group. a small portion out of the entire student body.

Hi Benjamin, I'm afraid that they didn't consider that there was going to be a $2.1M shortfall in the budget and they the college has had to lay off employees as a result. It sounds like most of these people have no concept of money. Perhaps these are the screeching of people raised in charitable housing and are fed from food stamps. One develops a certain mentality when the relationship between work and one's standard of living are out of sync. When one becomes accustomed to not paying fair market value, the concept of money/work becomes skewed. Are these "'demanding" students on full scholarship so they are further distanced from how things work. Just the musings of a lady who takes care of dogs for a living. Thanks again for your content. I feel smarter after listening to you.

I remember the last video touting the freedoms of the radical educational model and I see these demands as merely the logical extension of that. I suppose no one has explained to the students the difference between the freedom to change oneself and the freedom to change others. Sort of like how the teachers rationalize not teaching, as a freedom for themselves, rather then as a breach of the contract of being paid to provide an education. Once you accept the premise that freedom means no resistance to change, then these demands follow logically. I see them putting what they have learned, to use.
@Teddypally
@Teddypally 7 жыл бұрын
Their demands are not that different from the situation of the Evergreen teachers; whom they appear to have adopted as role models. I suggest you make a transcript and replace students with teachers and see what sorts of insights you get. That, by the way, is a technique for determining bias in an argument.

Wait a minute... You said "as a preschool teacher" at 24:38. I didn't know you were a teacher but I did notice your bias for teachers. The rational challenge you face is avoiding white washing the role of the teachers in this. Good intentions do not logically lead to good results so you have to exclude that from a logical analysis. The most commonplace fallacy I've seen is the trickle down effect, i.e. if the teachers are happy, their students learn better. Rather, if the teachers are skilled, their students learn better. Another challenge you might face is acknowledging how much damage is due to the teacher's influence; because you're going to have to overcome your own personal bias that you don't harm others. Such bias leads to "othering" to avoid the emotional backlash, something I have observed frequently, in myself and others. I've had to learn those lessons myself and I hope my experience is helpful to you.
