hi everyone! long time no see. i had absolutely no intention to review this movie but after watching it i couldn't help myself. it completely loses the heart of the original animated mulan film but honestly, what did we expect? disney needs to stop ruining our childhoods with these live action adaptations.

I wish you would’ve touched even a bit on the absolute atrocity that is the historical inaccuracy of the costumes, makeup, and culture, seeing as you’re a fashion channel. Mulan isn’t set in a specific dynasty (though it is usually in Northern Wei) but the costumes vary from all different dynasties. The color palette is horrendous and would never have been seen in Ancient China. They messed up the entire court life of China and made it like Versailles. The makeup is exaggerated and inaccurate, making them look like they are in the rococo era, but adding a slight hint of clown. The usage of tulou is confusing, as Mulan never had ANY adaptation with any connection to Fujian. The court officials are wearing the wrong dynasty clothing. Liu Yifei never voiced support for the CCP, she voiced support for the HKPD after Hong Kong protestors beat a mainland reporter up for disagreeing with them.

i was planning on doing a separate video discussing the costumes in depth but it would’ve taken a lot more time and research + it didn’t fit in with everything else i was “reviewing” in this video. also, this isn’t a fashion channel! i’ve made videos about actresses in the past (i just like clothes a lot 😅)

True feminism is more about not being afraid to have a woman, who thinks for herself. Which is what they do, and NPCs hate it. Wonder Woman and Alita (liked by NPCs, both with superpowers) were told by men, what to believe, and then followed it religiously, as well as their original believe, which they never questioned.They are only extension of someone else's agenda. Disney's women (Mulan, Rey, Captain Marvel) meet their enemies, have discussion with them, understand each other's POV and are willing to change their mind. This makes them an active player, who can change things.

Someone mentioned in the original scene for that leaving home montage was fricking heartbreaking watching the dad run out and then tripping and dropping the clip. I personally agree, he probably cared less that she "did it again", he cared that his daughter was gonna be gone, that she might die! The baby girl he watched grow up! Meanwhile, the other guy literally cares more his armor than his own daughter! The final line of, "If I reveal her, she will be(in response to Mom saying that she will be killed if they don't go after her)", is so hard hitting. Meanwhile, "Mulan did this!", again, like he's angry his daughter was trying to save him! Gah, sorry about that, this is so angering to know about.

I was so sad about Shang being removed. In another review video, they said the idea to remove him came from the metoo movement. The creators thought it was inappropriate to have Shang form a relationship with Mulan because he was her commander. Thus in their eyes an unbalance power dynamic and he could take advantage and such. Where they failed miserably. He never took advantage of her or treated her any different until her gender was revealed. Even then, he spared her life because he was in debt after her saving him. He cared about her but seemed like he didn't wanna admit it until towards the end. Hell, they didn't even form a relationship till AFTER the war was over and he wasn't her commander anymore. It was dumb to remove him, and now they suffer cause of that change 😤.

Keep in mind Fa Zhou in the '98 version was absolutely devastated when his little girl had run off to her almost certain death in order to protect him he truly believed that he would never see her again which was why he was so happy and relieved when Mulan came back he thought he lost his daughter forever
@orangegreen3769
@orangegreen3769 3 жыл бұрын
It shows growth in the dad as well. In the beginning, it seemed like all he cared about was honor. He became disappointed when Mulan failed her etiquette lessons because she didn't reach his expectations and felt she had dishonored the family. But going through not having his daughter with him for months at a time and even being afraid that she may possibly die , thought him that honor is not what matters. Him being with his daughter and loving her is what truly matters in the end. That's why that scene where they show us that the father doesn't care about the gifts is so powerful! Because we can see him more as a father to mulan and see how his perspective has changed. We can see his growth even if we didn't see him go through it. I just can't believe they destroyed this idea and image. It is so disappointing. Edit: as someone pointed out, her dad wasn't disappointed in her or think she had dishonored the family, he was simply sad about seeing Mulan sad. Which actually shows even more the great and loving character of her father, something that the live action missed completely :(

My problem with this movie is Mulan screams, "I'm not like other girls". She chases chickens, climbs roofs, knows martial arts, and has a powerful 'qi' - she's definitely not like other girls. It's a bad case of mary sue. The old Mulan actively wanted to be a good daughter and future wife; and she effortlessly failed to do those things because she lacked those skills. Old Mulan builds her character over time, but in the movie she just comes off uninteresting and bland. Disney completely butchered the relationship between Mulan and her friends. Dialogue was really awkwardly delivered and show no real relationship between her and the men. Some of the characters can speak perfect english, I don't know why they had to speak with a fake asian accent. Stop whitewashing asian movies, and just let asians be asian.

I grew up with christianity, but I am very curious about other cultures, and the natural religion in my own country, before christianity came. The whole world need to treasure their national culture more; in my opinion, diversity for the sake of diversity is not nessicarily a good thing. America is a very 'young' country; their only 'past' is christianity. Except for the Indians; they have a very beautiful ancient culture, and I hope at least some of it remains. But the rest of the world, they had their own beliefs before christianity, their own tradition and culture. And much of it have been lost unfortunately. I think it have happened some hundreds of years slower in for example asian countries, and other places on earth. Cultures which deserve to be preserved; also in western/scandinavian countries. But the 'modern' american culture does creep into most countries eventually. But it is not americans 'fault' that other cultures are lost; it is the people who choose to abandon their own traditions in favour of something else. They are doing that of their own free will.

I agree and disagree. The first point is definitely accurate for me lol, its annoying to see "im not like other girls" bullshit while the original Mulan portrays otherwise. And Mulan is not a warrior princess that is gifted with martial arts since baby or some shit then had to hide it because "women shouldnt be stronger than men" altough i understand that they probably trying to adjust to the timeline. (Because during that era, women arent allowed to fight and should larn household chores instead). However its still ridiculious because there are no flying lady bird or phoenix flying around then 😑. And the second point, its not actually white washing because they are not replacing the asians with caucasian actors & actresses. As for the accent, i think its istill understandable because their target market is international level therefore they pick people who speak clear english. Im sure it will be the same for the live action of snow white.

I actually have a big problem with qi being introduced in this movie. In the animated movie, Mulan was a regular person, like me and you, who took it upon herself to gather the strength and courage to do something extraordinary. That’s the lesson I learnt as a kid, « a single grain of rice can tip the scale », which meant me too, if I only worked up the courage to. But with qi, which is essentially a superpower, Mulan is already great and powerful and above us regular folks, and the only obstacle is that she has to « show her true self ». So, in my opinion, the whole lesson of the original movie has been lost :/

I think we need to understand chinese culture and philosophy in order to understand why they changed so much things. I heard that chinese people hated the animation because they disrespected their culture and philosophy. It was too west oriented philosophy. Chinese philosophy is different from western’s. In the ancient China, they privileged honour and wealth before anything else. And disobedience was a dishonour and an absolute humiliation for the whole family, even of it was for a noble reason. It was worst than death. I think if Mulan really existed, she would have been executed by the emperor even if she saved him because she was a woman, lied to everyone and dishonored her whole family. Making her as an exemple for chinese people to not follow in order to keep some authority over the people. It’s sad but I think this is how ancien China’s politic worked. So I don’t really mind these changes as long as it respects China’s history and accuracy. :) This Mulan may wanted to be more realistic than the animated one and be more true to the real Mulan story.

I hated the witch element all together. I felt like she was just too supernatural and powerful nothing would have felt like a genuine win. I didn't care for the sister, and honestly I didn't like how they switched up the parents. They never seemed disappointed, or resented their daughter they were trying to get her married but not like she was an item just culturally normal. Plus it made the mom seem almost mean in this movie. I hated Mulan as a character because they made it seem like they're aren't drawbacks to her being a girl and there are no physical limitations. Mulan wasn't athletic or had a knack for fighting. She was a girl doing the right thing and wanted to save her father. She put doing the right thing above everything else. Which the original paid off time and time again. This movie just pisses on that. It's like well she's a damn superhero at this point it's almost selfish if she don't do something. Also it makes me mad because women do have to work hard and train to not only beat the boys but be better in instances. She just magically can do everything and I'm like how is this relatable???

@@animegirl8033 The problem here is that Mulan 2020 also screwed up the original ballad: as Mulan was an ordinary mortal in that poem. Mulan's original ballad: normal woman who takes her dad's armor to save him from the draft, spends 10 years in the military, becomes a general, war ends, she returns home to her normal life, and her comrades learn her secret after the fact. Mulan '98: normal woman who takes her dad's armor to save him from the draft, trains to become a skilled soldier, war ends, she returns home to her normal life: the changes here are the fact that the war doesn't last 10 years, and that she's outed *before* the war ends. Mulan 2020: woman who is Qi-sensitive (read: Force-sensitive!) from birth takes her dad's armor to save him from the draft, doesn't need training b/c already skilled, war ends and she starts to return to her normal life--except the emperor's envoy requests that she return to the military as a soldier b/c she's a BADASS. While Mulan 2020 left out Mushu, Cricket (as an actual insect), and the songs from the 1998 adaption, it's actually less-faithful to the ballad than said Mulan '98.

@.Animegirl. Did the legend Mulan have Captain Marvel superpowers? Even the Chinese directed movie and drama have mulan being a normal girl crossdressing to save her dad. Sure she learned martial arts in some adaptations but she isn't some magical entity. That removes the whole purpose of the story! That Mulan was just an ordinary girl doing extraordinary things...not because she was special but because it was right.

the problem with qi in this film is that that's not how qi works in real life, it's not some sort of special power. every single person has qi in them, qi does not descriminate. it's used mainly in medicine and martial arts. qi is the same in everyone, it's how the person channels and uses their qi that makes them powerful, and the person should be praised for their techniques not the qi itself.

What pissed me off the most, though, was that Mulan didn't cut her hair in the armor scene. That was the best moment in the film because she as she cut her hair, she also cut away the beliefs that she had grown up with, that she had to be the perfect bride to honor her family. Her cutting her hair was a metaphor for removing toxic beliefs that women live with and the fact that they didn't have that scene pissed me off. And also the fact that she was portrayed as perfect because she had chi. Disney basically took a powerful feminist icon who stands for the basic views of feminism that you should be true to yourself no matter what and turned her into a Mary Sue.

I found the narrative that "we cut off Li Shang because this is a story about a woman, she needs no man, she can't fall in love with her superior" by Disney as absolute trash. Mulan and Li Shang weren't living a love story during the war🙄 they were both fighting to keep their land safe from invaders. Li Shang never abused his power to hurt her. In fact, he let her go alive( albiet, by cruelly abandoning her) when he found out her secret. The only time he approached her slightly romantically is _after_ the war, and he visited her house, meeting her family. He gave her full credit and trusted her judgement despite living in a time period where misogyny was the "norm." You can make it a story about female strength without cutting off a male character, because it always was one.

Also Disney: Let's turn Mulan completely boring and remove any of the character development she had in the original. Let's take away the inner resolve and creativity she showed in the first movie, and give her have superpowers instead. As an ethnic Chinese, I must say I am surprised that you caught that issue of the grandma being replaced by the sister and how that no longer gives Mulan a sense of pressure to be the perfect daughter. Exactly! Usually in a Chinese family, when there is only one girl, that girl bears the sole responsibility of marrying off to a good husband to bring material wealth in the form of dowries and bring honour to the family (while the boy is under even greater responsibility to "carry on the family line"). Hence Mulan was under great pressure as the only child and daughter, a critical element missing once there is a sister as a "backup". Kudos for pointing that out!

@D Lu yes I am aware that in one of the early version of the story, Mulan actually has two siblings, both a younger sister and younger brother. But I am simply writing in the context of the Disnified version of Mulan, and comparing the animated to the 2020 version as this video is all about. Sure, the 2020 version does try to be a tad closer to the more traditional versions of the story, but doing so in this case ended up taking out an element which would have contributed to the rather flat character portrayed in the 2020 version. If they bothered to fully flash out the pressure she would have felt to marry before her sister, then yes, that would be a good improvement. But to be honest, it will not exactly be believable unless the two actresses change their roles. Brutal, but may actually be closer to fact. lol

I completely agree on the Qi or "chi" as I pronunced it in my language. The problem with this concept is that on the new movie it doesn't show the effort Mulan had to make to improve her fighting. I was really upset that they didn't follow the original animated movie where she was actually kicked out of the army because she didn't know how to fight. She had to make a super effort to be a great soldier and she was super capable! This effort is not reflected in the movie, and this doesn't make any sense since she was NEVER trained as the other men! That really upsets me because we all identify with the original Mulan, where she had to fight for her dreams instead of being a good fighter without a process, without training or any effort at all. :(

I think they removed her relatability. In the original she wasn’t born with some kind of superhuman ability that she had to hide in order to pretend to be as weak as everyone else. She had to train hard and go through awkward situations and moments in order to become a good soldier. In this new movie, she was more like a superhero. She just wasn’t relatable. I think the songs would’ve been amazing. I mean, imagine the choreography of “Make a Man Out if You” in a live version. There was also something rushed about it and at the same time slow. The attempts at humor were corny and flat most of the time, and also came across as awkward( sometimes bizarre). I don’t know, I think this movie had a lot of potential. It also could have shown a relationship based on mutual respect and a real sense of equality, but it just kind of was very weird there too. All in all, it didn’t really deliver for me.

Faith I agree with you! I think that, and maybe this is just me, Disney is afraid of showing “weakness” in their female characters, but I think it’s so good and healthy to show that it’s okay to not have it together from the beginning to children. That we aren’t born perfect ( girls or boys). That our natural talents aren’t fully developed at birth and that others can be acquired through hard work and determination even if they don’t come naturally at first. That’s what made the original so inspiring to me as a little girl. Here was a young Mulan who had everything against her but by sheer conviction and perseverance she led an army and saved an empire. Now she’s been reduced to a Marvel character who was born a with super powerful Qi. Another issue I have with this movie is with the witch character. The antagonist role is split between her and the leader of the enemy army, but her ultimate redemption in the end kind of makes her role unnecessary. To me, her character would have added more to the story if she had actually been an awesome villain. That scene where Mulan and the witch are standing across from one another on the rooftop would’ve been mind blowing if she had been fully evil because ( to me) these two women represent the two possible responses to the double standard oppressing women within this culture: You could respond with bitterness and revenge ( like the witch, dressed in black all angry and ready to kill) or you could respond with hope, and strength like Mulan in her red flowing dress, ready to defend her home and her kingdom with honor. But by making her good in the end it kind of made her character just fall apart. By splitting the antagonist role between her and the leader of the Huns and then having her turn good so easily at the end they failed to create a strong enemy for the movie. In the original version Shan Yu was so obviously the central evil figure. In this one I feel like his character was very much neglected by the addition of the witch and so lazily put together that he kind of just fell to the background of the movie to the point that you kind of forget him and the army at times. Disney needs to know that a woman being portrayed as evil, and corrupted is not a bad thing either. That a powerful, vengeful female villain is fine too, and that this would’ve justified the character of the witch more than some weird out-of-nowhere redemption story that just kind of made this character useless and only ended up taking away from the development of the central evil figure. Another thing is that you don’t need to make the male characters weak in order to make the female characters look strong. ( I noticed this in Frozen II as well when they just kind of kick Chistof to the curb). In Mulan they failed to show men using Qi. If they had actually done this we would’ve seen the double standard more clearly between how this ability is perceived and developed in men and women. Instead we’re kind of left to feel like she’s the only one in the army ( and in everyday life) that has this very strong, out of this world Qi that has never been seen before ( or for a long time). It’s very messy. I would personally love to see a Disney movie that has a very strong couple where both the man and woman are well developed, vulnerable, strong, and intelligent. Imagine the impact it would have in the way children see love if a healthy relationship based on mutual admiration, trust, and respect was shown to them at a young age? This was something that could have been done with this movie. Imagine if they had left the role of Shang alone( I don’t really understand why he had to be made a soldier of a love interest was going to be part of the movie anyway) , and they had shown a strong woman and a strong man hold each other up and admire one another deeply in a spirit of true equality where neither one of them feels threatened by the other’s strength or talent but actually is built up and encouraged by what they see in the other. Man! It could’ve been an amazing movie. They really missed a great opportunity to hit audiences hard with this one.

Ignoring my dislike of how un-disney this film is, I hate the new powers Mulan has. In the animated film, she was totally unprepared for the war. She really struggled to keep up because she was starting from nothing. But she worked hard, and she was smart. That's what I loved about her. She was determined to prove herself, and to fight for her country. Just like you said in the video, there are no stakes during the training. You don't get the huge payoff as she earns the respect of the soldiers. Also I miss her -cow- horse

I hated from the beginning (watching the trailer) that this Mulan had a totally different personality which nobody could identify with. The animation one was smart, but clumsy and VULNERABLE. She wasn't a super hero. She went through a process that required courage, ability and discipline. She won the battles thanks to the combination of her intelligence and strength that she got in the army. The actress looks so cold and bland, like she's a robot, not a person. And I don't understand why swapping characters, changing their names and personalities. What's the point? Nostalgic fans won't like it, new audiences won't care...So it makes absolutely no sense.

The thing that I hated the most was how they changed the relationship between her and her Dad. In the original, that relationship was established as very strong early on which is why Mulan was so overprotective of him and why she decided to go in his place. That beautiful scene after she screwed up with the matchmaker where he talks about the blossoms and makes her feel better is one of the best scenes because it establishes how much they love one another. Then again later in the film when she comes home and finds him in the same place waiting for her and she offers the gifts. And it never fails to make me sob buckets when he tosses them aside to hug her and reveal that “the greatest gift and honor is having you for a daughter.” It’s such a beautiful callback and they completely ruined it in the remake. By removing the core of why Mulan decides to go to war in the first place, it makes her feel incredibly hollow as a character.

I think that "QI" was a mistake, it takes away the essence of the film, because the lesson that the film gives you is that even if you are a normal girl, the important thing is family and love and that sometimes you have to sacrifice for the good of those we love, even if it is something out of your reach, but if we add this concept of QI, now she becomes a super athletic girl without fear and all the challenges that her situation imposes on her would be useless and all the courage and honor that she wanted to show his father that she would win it without effort. Edit: It's just a personal opinion.

I love Mulan’s journey because she succeeds only when she stops trying to live up to expectations of either gender. The “strongest” woman was beautiful, serene and poised, the “strongest” man was unkempt, forceful and arrogant. The soldiers and Mulan failed to climb the pole when they relied only on brute strength. Mulan had to use balance and patience to successfully climb it. Same thing at the mountain, when the regiment thought the only way to fight was strength against strength, like the arm-wrestling competitions. And again when the palace doors were barred and they tried to force them open. Not only did Mulan use the climbing technique, but she also used beauty and the female invisibility that Mushu had previously commented upon to fool the guards. Mulan’s strength was combining the lessons taught to her as a woman and those taught to her as a man. She was never going to excel at either gender, but she could definitely excel at just being Mulan.

They took out the Li Shang romance to avoid the implication that this guy had the hots for what he thought was another guy, but instead, they gave us the some sweet sapphic subtext. Mulan 2 was so good to watch as a kid because it still stuck with its message on Mulan being truthful to herself and her duty. Her relationship with Shang had so many layers that it was hard to watch this movie take him and along with yao, ling, and chien. We grew with these characters and saw how amazing they all were separately then Disney decided to take that all away for failed marketing

Sorry, but that's based on the actual story. Would you expect a funny, quirky, clumsy girl in a camp full of men? Of course, Disney only adapted that because it's still a children's show. Do you realise how unrealistic it was? Mulan 2020, is going to be more serious because that was the circumstances and it's not a children's show- a character doesn't have to set for the audience to laugh at

This new Mulan movie is basically saying “In a world of princesses, be a soldier” and it tells women what to do/be in order to be considered a shero or boss or strong. She’s a “pick-me” girl! A Mary Sue!!! True feminism is saying you can be whatever and whoever you want to be. The 98 Mulan was just an ordinary girl who through her wits and determination, did extraordinary things. Which I as an asian American who struggled with my asian and American identities related so much to. This 2020 Mulan was born with powers, was so much better than everyone else already, which gave me the message that I either had to be one way or another to be good, if I wasn’t already born with powers, then I’ll just be like her sister who has no personality, no nothing and is destined to a life of being matched and married and live as a house wife. Disney thinks they can just throw us a powerful woman and call it feminism and women’s empowerment. No. That’s now that feminism and women’s empowerment is. That’s straight up tone deaf sexism and we ain’t here for that shit

And Mulan is not an average girl, she ready has a superpower. Unlike the original story, Mulan was a common girl who worked hard to earn her power. The script is so dull. The intro of qi made her feel like “the chosen one” like the force in star wars. In the animated one, the chicken scene was set up to show how clever and creative Mulan is. That’s supposed to be the thing that sets her apart from others. And she trained to be skilled in fighting like everyone else. Her cleverness also helped her earn respect from others. I liked the message that showed a woman can work hard and become a warrior just like any man (w/o help from a special qi power) and offer a different perspective.

Here are some fixes I came up with: Starting off with the opening, we see a young Mulan who has to watch her father being practically dragged into her home after being severely wounded in battle but still being praised as a hero by all in the town, and a feast is held in his honor for his bravery. However, in the next scene, we see Mulan looking at her father who has an empty look in his eyes as he stares out at the festivities, uncaring before seeing her. He asks why she wasn't with the others and she says she wants to be with him to which he gives a small smile and beckons her over and sits her on his lap before telling her the story of the Fenghuang (the Chinese Phoenix) and how she represents integrity, virtue, knowledge, and grace. Mulan then asks if she has those qualities to which her father replies that she is still young but one day she will and this makes Mulan smile and she makes a promise to her father that she will make him proud by becoming like the Fenghuang to which he replies he knows she will. The years go by and Mulan has grown into a young woman of marriageable age and tries to live by the promise she made to her father all those years ago but ends being rather lacking in comparison to the other girls her age in her village and is known to be awkward and clumsy but extremely intelligent. We then come to the matchmaker scene, where instead of her sister being frightened by a spider, Mulan notices a spider crawling on top of the matchmaker's head which she tries to warn her about but is silenced, this eventually leads to Mulan being deemed unmarriable by the matchmaker and this breaks her heart as she feels she has broken her father's heart who tries to console her. That's when the imperial soldiers come to announce that a man from every house will be forced to fight, but Mulan remembering the time her father had fought in the war and it left him disabled and mentally broken she runs up to the recruiter and tries to beg for her father's life but she is turned away and heartbroken by her father telling her she had disgraced him. Everything mostly happens the same way except a longer buildup to her donning the armor after reciting the famous poem after seeing two ducks of opposite sexes running side-by-side. Eventually, she reaches the camp where she continually falls behind the men due to her lacking in physical strength and on the verge of being sent home, she finally passes the test by using her brain rather than her brawn and begins to excel by finding alternate ways to compete with the men which eventually earns their respect. As for the witch, she is no longer a witch but a bird spirit who had been forcibly bound to the Rouran leader in order to give him an advantage over the Chinese army. However, she despises him for keeping her hostage by keeping her robes away from her which prevents her from being free so in an attempt to break away from him she uses Mulan as a puppet to kill him by feeding her information in her sleep.

I hated the witch part too. It wasn't feminist. The whole plot boiled down to: Yeah, men would have just accepted a girl with open arms. All she had to do was convince them she is strong and honest. Which is bullshit. First, because the witch was much stronger than Mulan and all she got was rejection. And second, because Mulan lied to them and somehow they just believed her. She wasn't honest. If strength and a few male friends could solve women's problems, feminism wouldn't even need to exist. The problem would have been solved long ago. The world never lacked strong women or a few understanding men.

@rainbow2401990
@rainbow2401990 3 жыл бұрын
@@chew7656 The original shows how unnatural patriarchy is. Mulan tries her best to fit in, but it is just too absurdly demanding for her to manage. Then, when she goes to the army, she is again trying to fit in as the other gender, and while it has its difficulties she manages it. Basically, patriarchy is so twisted that a woman could easier become a man than fit all its requirements. Second, she is not so easily forgiven, let alone accepted, after she is discovered. Patriarchy isn't broken just because of one moment. The friends she has bonded with have found a feminine part of themselves (they don't find it too humiliating to dress as women to enter the palace) and they are ready to follow her after she is proven right by the kidnapping of the emperor, but not everyone else is again. Third, there isn't a counter-Mulan, the "bad feminist who hates men" bullshit, in that one. Forth, everything Mulan achieves she achieves with dedication and hard work. She isn't magically stronger than the men. In fact, in the beginning, she is physically weaker. Almost gets thrown out. But then she proves that she has a different way of doing things, a way to think out of the box, that can make up for it. Physically, with lots of training she catches up with the others. Mentally, she can still have a fuller picture of the world (they as men are cut from everything feminine by the patriarchal society) and this now places her above them. In the new Mulan, physical strength is everything. A woman with superpowers just has more of it than the ordinary men.

So I’ll admit I haven’t seen the movie (I hate the Disney remake trend and there’s too many controversies surrounding this movie to warrant a watch), so take my views with a grain of salt. But going off of the other live action movies they really fail to understand why these characters resonate deeply with people, other than a surface level analysis. The animated Mulan wasn’t Arya Stark. She didn’t have a rejection of feminine ideals and she wasn’t born a warrior princess, she just saw things differently from others. Her biggest strength and resource was her mind and thinking outside the box. That’s how she retrieved the arrow, caused the avalanche, broke into the palace, and defeated Shan Yu. Also speaking of Shan Yu, he’s quite an underrated villain. During the final confrontation where Mulan reveals that she caused the avalanche, he doesn’t go into a misogynist rant of “oh no I was bested by a GIRL?!”. He called her a soldier then proceeded to try and kill her. To me that’s more of an interesting character than lady bird

Shan Yu reacted that way since in the Hun Army (and civilization) females were highly respected and seen as great leaders in fighting and other things. as a chinese-american, this movie was extremely disappointing, especially since it was supposed to be a way for my culture to be celebrated and appreciated. not only was the entire OG tale of mulan extremely butchered and inaccurate in the movie, but the whole thing with the qi felt so forced. also, the movie based it on the tang dynasty and not the song dynasty in the original tale, and mulan's dad defending her at the end wasn't historically accurate. i guess i'm not that surprised with the lack of effort put into this movie since they had an all-white production team, including the director, the writers, the costume designer, and the composer. it really upsets me that although this chinese tale is being told through asian actors, the same isn't being done behind the scenes. yes, we have an asian story, but a white person wrote that. yes, we have asian people in their cultural clothing, but a white person made that. in order to tell an asian story effectively, we need people from that same background to tell them. instead, all we get from this movie is white people attempting to tell a story meant for us. overall, a major letdown, super inaccurate, the actress supports the hong kong police brutality (despite literally playing a character who is a symbol of rebellion), disney literally filmed and thanked the xinjiang concentration camps, and the all-white production team just really pisses me off. as someone who grew up loving the animated mulan, it was so inspiring to see a disney princess who looked just like me and could be equally as feminine and badass. however, this movie did the total opposite. it really took away from the original message and it honestly wasn't that good. i'm really disappointed.
