So I'm finally done my "First Impressions" video on the Hind where I wanted to focus on its shortcomings as a way of demonstrating the overall state of the module.
My hope is that this will help people who are on the fence about the Mi-24 make a decision, and that maybe it will shine a light on things that are having a significant impact or could be improved over the status quo.
Like I said in the video my overall impression of the Hind has been very positive and I did purchase it just a few days into my trial period. I do plan to make tutorials for it, I'm just a little slow :)
Apologies for the crackly mic in a few places - I had to re-install Windows in the middle of editing this one and since then it has been doing that and I'm not sure why.

Music is a really tough subject for content creators. I love to share the music I like, and I also want to use music that's appropriate for the video I'm making. But most of the time I can't do that because of copyright. I can ignore it and use the music anyway but then KZfaq runs ads or it gets blocked in parts of the world. So when artists that I'm already listening to like Клет, KOZORO, and Martin Molin (Wintergatan) decide to make their music available and copyright safe I want to not only take advantage of that but also try to encourage it. I want them to be recognized for their work. I want people to buy their music. And I want to make it as easy as possible for people to do that, so I put it up on the screen.

ED is great in teasing and releasing new modules but lacks in finishing them. I left DCS for 18 months and when i came back there was basically no progression on the Viper as i left it. Same with the Hind. Huge announcements, lots of trailers and basically no progression since release. Instead they are teasing the Apache which will also lack of most of its features at release.

On the contrary they have done a lot with the Hind since launch. Bindings have improved, desync has improved, cms has improved, atakas were added, using atgms with petro has improved, visual bugs have been fixed, mirrors have been fixed, cockpit shake has been added, sling loading has been fixed, and more. There are still major items like Petro's voice and the cargo area gunners to do, but it's disingenuous to say they haven't made any progress since launch.

Wags and the other community content creators have done a great job showcasing all the good stuff on the Hind. I didn't want to make another video where I tell people what they already know, so I decided to focus on what people in the communities I'm a part of are talking about: The issues they're facing, and the uncertainty of whether these things are working as intended, missing, unfinished, or broken. I hope people find it useful at least.

I'm definitely interested to see how the AI progresses with the Hind. If they could get it to a state similar to Jester (which I like to hope is the aim, since it's a huge thing for the Hind, and will be even more important for the Apache, where the gunner can do more than just lob missiles) that would be awesome. I'm optimistic, since ED seems to be pushing themselves more and more recently. All of that said, the Mi-24 is my first helicopter since the Ka-50, and I'm loving it. It's been so much fun to learn the helicopter, but as you've pointed out, there are definitely some issues. In terms of flying from the best view in the house (the front seat) it's something I pretty much haven't even bothered with, since the AI flying is indeed very jerky. But, I 've got faith in ED, and I definitely look forward to seeing how they improve this beast. The AH-64 will be another great addition if ED can nail these things.
@jellypowder3325

With the Hind AI, they said they want "functionality first" so I doubt it will be like Jester. I think they want it to function like another onboard computer system you can operate (you literally use it with "up" "Down" "Left" "Right" controls) instead of it being human-like and making it's own decisions (Jester has its own "mind" when deciding target priority or releasing CM).
@kilianortmann9979
@kilianortmann9979 2 жыл бұрын
For the Apache I absolutely agree with you , the WSO AI has to be on pointn especially for the gun. In contrast, the P Version Hind in DCS is heavily focused on fixed armament, which I think is a good decision, because it works fairy well without a second human player. For that reason, for me, Petrovich would be fine as an 'extended Targeting pod' similar to what he is right now.

Thank you for making this. I've been kind of afraid to watch it until now. I preordered the Hind as my first DCS helicopter and was having fun just messing around in it but basically stopped flying it when my skill level got to the point that I could tell strange stuff was going on. The weird sideways flight and trimmer issues were two big things I couldn't understand what was going on. I've also noticed the trimmer (in either mode) simply not working near the center randomly. I bought the Hip a couple of weeks ago as basically a trainer for the Hind and I'm loving it thanks to your videos but trying to get back in the Hind it feels like the Mi-24 is incredibly unstable and takeoffs are a fight to the death compared to the Hip. I've flown it a little offline but most of my recent experience has been in MP where I seem to have more control issues and I'm starting to wonder if it's related to syncing even when you're the only one in the helicopter. I can't wait for your Hind videos to come out. Thanks again for all of your hard work!

When I was making mods for X-Plane back in the day - C++ plugins - something I did quite early was make a generic "toggle switch" class which would automatically generate bindings for "turn on", "turn off", and "toggle". and similar for pushbuttons and selector switches. so when I went to simulate a new system/panel, I'd just say "it has five toggle switches named x, y, z, two pushbuttons labelled a, b, and mode selector with options 1, 2, 3, 45" and I'd get bindings (and nice animations, sounds, save state etc) all built in not sure how any DCS third-party dev can survive to the end of the project without making something similar

I want to note that the multicrew de-sync is not a problem only related to the hind, I've experienced it as well in the Huey and Gazelle. The biggest problem is if de-sync happens on a server with moderate to high ping the tail will snap off at random. (same with other helos) Also, a quick fix if stuff isn't working (rpm or rotor isn't synced) is to rejoin the helicopter. When i sit in the front i always rejoin before takeoff to make sure everything is working.
@vsTerminus
@vsTerminus 2 жыл бұрын
The Gazelle is third party and uses its own multicrew code, which has always been highly problematic. So I can't fault ED there. My own experience has been that the Hind is much worse than the Huey for desync but you're right, it affects that helo too. Exploding or losing your tail for no reason always sucks :(

There is one thing I missed with the flight model. With and without the gyros the mi-24 starts buffeting on approach where the nose will wobble up and down. Very thorough dissection of the Hind. Brutally honest. Big thumbs up from me. A couple thoughts I had while watching: 1. As a programmer I can't help but think about issues in DCS from a coding perspective like the "weightless sling load" problem. You're right that you brought it to their attention last year, but I don't think they are ignoring the problem. I don't have any insight into ED's code but my gut tells me this is a non-trivial issue that involves writing a new, complex flight model for sling loads. Right now they have what on the surface appears to be a very simple model for sling loads (same for bombs but that is another can of worms I can write a small book on). I could be wrong but that would explain the delay because that would be a major undertaking and not something they could knock out in a short time (like a patch cycle or two). 2. Regarding the issue of the APU underperforming in hot climates. Is there an option for external power? That would be the real life answer for the same problem. I'm not an expert on the real life Hind but I've run into too many issues in DCS that appeared to be bugs on the surface only to turn out to be accurate representations of non-intuitive things from the real world. I'm always wary now when I think something is a bug, unless I have documentation from either a real life source, an expert (like the Erik Scott video you mentioned), or ED that spells it out as truly being a bug. Great video and I'm glad you took the time to do research instead of rushing for day-one clicks.
@ripper253
@ripper253 2 жыл бұрын
They said the APU is underperforming and doesn't provide enough air pressure, and external AC power is an option (perfect for the mig-21 with electric start), but external high pressure air sadly is not at the moment, which being fully pneumatic start leaves us with the advised workaround of "just start with engines running"
@jubuttib
@jubuttib 2 жыл бұрын
One 1, I agree a million percent. Taking a one body flight model and suddenly trying to convert it into a two body model is definitely non-trivial. I mean they could probably do the added weight quite easily (they can remove weight when fuel goes down, you shoot missiles, drop bombs or jettison stuff etc., so they should be able to increase it somehow too, maybe model it as a hidden, non-functional "fuel tank"), but doing any modeling on the effect of a swinging weight is probably going to take a lot of work.

Excellent video as always, vsTerminus! *So* glad I've finally learned my lesson and didn't fall for the pre-order on this one! And while I appreciate ED's new free demo policy, they really need to think about the wisdom of showing off products that aren't complete or functional enough to actually sell themselves. Free demos only work for good products. Maybe in 6 months this will be one? Until then, it doesn't matter, even if they say they've fixed it I won't believe it until I've seen it. More likely I'll be waiting even longer than that and getting it on half price sale. Even at 30% off pre-orders, DCS modules are far too expensive for what they are.

That sideways flight segment explains a lot for me. Thank you, it was puzzling me when trying out the module as to how and why does this feel so strange when sliding around, same with trim. ETL could pass for an explanation but it feels a bit of a stretch given how extreme it can get and how weathercocking seems to stabilize the opposite of expected. Overall I'm fairly happy with the release of the Hind. It's a mess, but not a disaster. A marked improvement over the F-16!

Yea, full credit to Erik Scott on that one. I'm excited to dig deeper into the flight model in the future but so far it feels really really good. I'm planning to do a 1 year update video for the Hind, but it does seem that many things on my list have been addressed already which is great. Some stuff is still around though, and with the team focused on the Apache my gut feel is that we won't see any major changes to the Hind in 2022. But maybe they'll prove me wrong! Anyway, bindings are better, MP sync is better, mirrors got fixed, we got another sound upgrade, rockets are fixed, atakas were added, and a variety of other changes too. But we're still missing Petrovich's voice, R-60Ms, the entire crew cabin area with gunner positions, a fix for the trimmer button with AP on, and other things. So there's still a lot to do as well.

Jester can be ungainly due to the amount of menus you have the sift through. Petrovich is just a simple “fly here” mechanic. Don’t really need a visual wheel menu for that. Quick and easy; perfect for low altitude flying.

I preordered, got it on day one. Overall, I got what I expected from an early access product. The only thing that was really frustrating to figure out was that DCS bunched up all axes of all my devices and assigned them all to sight control, messing it up royally. And the solution wasn't obvious, either. Once I got that figured out, my experience improved. Relatively speaking. Petro drinking on the job, though... I'm sure they'll fix it down the line, anyway. No performance issues on my old rig, which is nice.

My interim solution until they fix the inconsistency in trim behavior is to get a rough level trim and then make any minor adjustments with the trim hat and any major with the joystick and do a quick press at the end. For landing, it's imperative to have the trim centered and nose ever so slightly trimmed up when descending and from there I do not hit the trim button- I've found that doing that the AP sends me on a rodeo and I almost always end up on my side or see sawing forwards and backwards on the helipad. Very frustrating.

@vsTerminus
@vsTerminus 2 жыл бұрын
@@aaronwhite1786 Ah. Yea you might actually be a good candidate for some axis curves. The Warthog is a nice stick and all, but the stiff centering force makes it hard to make small corrections around the center point, which is pretty much all you do in a helicopter! That stick was definitely intended for fixed wing, unfortunately. You could try setting pitch and roll curves of anywhere from +10 to +20 and see how it goes. You'll have an easier time making small movements at the center point with those in place. I'm flying with a VKB stick with soft springs and no center detent at all, so it's very easy for me to make minor corrections.

For LTE if that were to occur you would lose all control over nose authority because at that point the tail rotor would be in full VRS until the helicopter straightens out and the tail rotor is in "clean" or undisturbed air relative to its position. It could be a little bit of loss of tail rotor authority where your tail rotor isn't strong enough (either too small, not effective enough, or rpm isn't sufficient) to counter the main rotor tq and weathervane effect. However flight regime wise it doesn't make sense why it would want to go the same direction (clockwise) regardless of the relative wind hitting the body of the helicopter.

I dont know why ED dont fix the rockets deflagration (on every aircraft). Its the main point of shoot some decent amount of rockets. In DCS you need to hit perfectly a VW hippie van (i will made one) for kill it, in the Su-25 or A-10 maybe its not a problem, but in helos...its not real and its not funny online (i dont recommend that). Petrovich fly fine if you compare it with the F-14 Iceman, at least we can rest or check something.
