Jump scares are my wife’s main gripe against horror movies. Informative and entertaining video as always, Miss Sarah.

I'm not a big fan of jump scares, mainly because I'm so desensitised to most things after years of seeing the same patterns. It's always a pleasant surprise when a jump scare can actually get me, and even more so when they can get me without relying on the sudden screeching violin or a scream.

I always appreciate it when I get a good scare from a horror. Because like you said, I also become desensitised to the formulas.

Well I tell you what. Opening that closet door in The Ring scared the bejesus outta me. Still does and I'm even expecting it.

Really interesting video Sarah! I do enjoy the odd jump scare & adrenaline kick. My friend who I tend to watch horror films with at the cinema is incredibly jumpy so I normally end up jumping at her reactions more than the actual film. I remember when we went to see The Conjuring 2 she was jumping every few mins & even let out a loud yell which then made both of us have a laughing fit! 😂

I’d love more analysis videos like this from you! The genre has been around long enough that there are plenty of topics and tropes to compare and contrast

Scream 5 also used the delay scare it for one of the deaths by tricking us into thinking when a jump scare will occur when it doesn’t until finally Ghostface kill

How did you calculate the average number of jump scares per film? Who is keeping track of that??

It's a website called Where's the Jump. They have data on there that you can then do some clever maths with.

I love a well placed, smart, jump scare. Cheap fake out ones I can see coming a mile away and it's easy to be desensitized to them. The Haunting of Hill House series on Netflix had one that got me real good. It's been a long time since one got me like that and it was awesome. I was pretty angry that the trailer for Smile ruined what could have been a really, really great jump scare. That car window scene would have gotten me good had it not been spoiled in the damn trailer! The only jump scare that truly wrecked me and almost ruined me for horror movies was the "I saw her face" moment from The Ring . I saw it in theaters, that definitely added to the experience (I was like, 18 at the time and not a newbie to horror by any means). The combination of sound, visuals, and the relatively "safe" moment that it interrupted caught me so off guard that it was downright traumatic. That sound especially. The entire sound scape of that movie hit me in a way that I've never really encountered since. That weird underwater quality it had, along with the unsettling abstract, clip show-esque visuals of the tape, the weird muted colors, it just hit too close with my real life dreams and nightmares.

Enjoying your Evolution series, can't wait for the next one. Also, my favorite jump scare was in Mulholland Drive. Yes, it's a thriller, but that jump scare is very well planned and effective. Thanks again for your hard work.

That's my favorite film, 2 incredible jump scares....the homeless man's face behind the Wendy's and the reveal of Diane's hideous face on her corpse when the 2 ladies break in. Great choice! 👍

Mulholland drive is the greatest film I have ever seen. If you like naomi watts in the ring, her performance in mulholland is the best I have ever seen by any actress in anything. The sheer range of emotions she goes through in the two halves is nothing short of phenomenal. How she didn't get the Oscar just dumbfounds me. Mulholland launched the better half of her career, and she reunited with lynch in twin peaks s3

I watch so much horror on the daily that the jump scares or any scares at all don't even phase me, I've been extremely desensitized. I can usually read a scene and tell where a jump is going to come from and sometimes when depending on the soundtrack being used or the motions of the character. But when a movie does get me, I enjoy it and more often then not laugh at myself for being caught off guard. The biggest startle I gave up was watching Insidious for the first time when that ghost pacing outside suddenly is inside. Don't know why that was the one that got me out of all the others that didn't, but it definitely kicked up my heartrate and gave me the adrenaline shakes. Lol

Fake out scares are my biggest gripe in horror. Genuine jump scares that also move the story forward are fine, if not overdone. I also really love the suspense that comes from good storytelling. Basically, as long as the story is solid and the characters are interesting, I'm ok with a few jump scares that are done well, just not fake outs.

I'm not huge on jump scares because I think they're a shortcut to a cheap thrill. Sometimes they're fine but most of the time when I see jump scares in a movie I just roll my eyes. Mike Flanagan's Midnight Club series was pretty funny though, because they broke the Guinness World Record for most jump scares in a TV show but lampooned the concept at the same time. It was a lot of fun kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b5-AYNqdq5iYh40.html

If you have to use a “jump scare” for your horror movie then you suck at making horror movies. Im talking about a loud, startling noise or an obvious built up scare. That is terrible. Give me a mood scare or a action that involves nerve inducing moments. Blumhouse seems to love using jump scares for every one of their movies and the dumb audiences love them for it. 😂

Very interesting video! I feel like people get tired of jump scares, but I LOVE THEM. They're the best part of horror movies for me because the rush of adrenaline is one of my favorite things. It's a way to get that rush without doing something dangerous, lol. One of my favorite franchises is Insidious, and there's jump scares galore in those 😅 Even though i know it's coming, it always gets me! There's nothing better than the anticipation of something jumping out and watching the movie through your fingers as if that will 'protect' you at all, lol.
