Got a new tutorial video out! This one goes step by step, describing how to build good plates from scratch, the use of black ink, the use of 70% alcohol (an no water), addition of a top layer, blending two plates together, as well as how to resolve some of the issues people often ask about (like 'why does my oil stick?). It's about 6-7 minutes long. Hope you like it! - Please comment if you have any questions or suggestions for future videos. Cheers - Steve

Dude, giving me "permission" to just wipe the stuck oil off the plate is a game changer :) I've spent too much time cleaning it completely.

It's definitely better to clean completely, using either Windex of vinegar, but in a pinch, pushing it off with some paper towels works too. I usually push it off first anyways, because it's then easier to clean fully when I get back to the lab.

Extremely cool. I can’t wait to eventually get into this and integrate it into different projects I’m working on. I’ll say it again, super cool

Amazing! I've got to start over. I tried to just do some rudimentary stuff using the right products and all - and it just didn't look very good. This was almost a year ago.

SUPER helpful video Steve! I always start with water in my plates and haven't experimented with just oil as the base yet. Nor have I been brave enough to manipulate the mixtures with my hands because of filming! It would be awesome to see a video about using the petri dishes as well, I find that I gravitate toward those just because it's more contained and I feel better using those in my studio that has carpet 😅 Thank you for providing tutorials and supplies, it really is appreciated!!

I’d love to hear what your thoughts are on the best way to make a mobile stage screen. One that could accommodate different shaped small venue stages.

The most direct way to do it is to use stretchy Lycra. Companies already make fabric with loop holes to affix them to connecting points. You can also buy them in a variety of shapes. I've used them a lot. The stretchiness helps a lot, and I also bring bungees with me in case the anchor points are in weird places... The Lycra also folds up small for transport.

Thank You! Is there a good video about using video mixer in projections? I have genlock for my Amiga PC and it's been lying in draver for years now.. It looks it may be a very nice way tu use it :D

@@LiquidLightLab Great! I'm watching lots of archive tv shows and picture mixing is present since the begining. Black and white BBC music shows are stunningly good, especially when were well digitised ( tubular bells live, top of the pops etc.) All best!

Hi, I would like to know if we can do the projections without the isopropyl alcohol ? Is it possible to do a projection only with the oil dye, the water and the mineral oil ?
@LiquidLightLab
@LiquidLightLab Жыл бұрын
Yes, it would be a different style of plate known as a 'blow plate'. One would use an open petri dish filled with water, and then drop the oil dye on top of it, letting it float. Then one can also add mineral oil to that.

Yes, ethyl rubbing alcohol doesn't work the same. I have tried it. It also smells a lot worse.

Does anybody know an european web shop for the equipment needed to do liquid light shows? For example oil dye/ water colors or the convex plates?
@LiquidLightLab
@LiquidLightLab 9 ай бұрын
There aren't really any other shops something like this. It's either all custom or stuff that has to be DIY... I started my shop because it was nearly impossible to find some of this stuff.

Can you blend all 4 available inputs in the same manor that you blend 2?

Only 2, you'll need more video mixers to do that, or a software based VJ program
