Another correction: Carnivores don't get just one food token when feeding. It gets food tokens equal to the body size of species it's attacking. Rulebook page 8. Last bullet point under "Feeding Carnivores": "Take Meat Food from the Food Bank equal to the attacked species' body size and place it on the attacking Carnivore's Species Board."

I have put this one on my list of current buys, based on other information and gameplays I have seen. Your explanation of the gameplay and rules is excellent as usual. That dino meeple is so cute isn't it? Can't wait to play this game! :D

Great job with the review. Thanks for covering us! And extra kudos for making it clear that Evolution is an inherently aggressive game. This aspect often takes Eurogamers by surprise. But I would add that it is possible to play the game very defensively, stay protected from Carnivores, and even win without ever playing a Carnivore. That happens in nearly 25% of the games at the office.

Dominic Crapuchettes I just learned about a rules mistake which is critical to this game: A carnivore gets food tokens from the bank equal to the body size of the attacked species, not just one. That is actually a very very important rule! Carnivores are much too powerful otherwise and the game breaks down. So the game you played is MUCH more harsh than the actual game. I urge you to play it by the proper Carnivore rules and see what you think. I expect you'll find it a much better balanced game.

Forced to buy it this Christmas due to genetics-medicine background.... I hope it is better than Evo!! Keep up the good work and...cool hair btw... i was watching season one before this and the change surprised me :P PS: Second or first edition is better?

man I love evolution... such love. wait what?? if you kill with a carnivore you get the food of the creature's board? I didn't know that. I'll have to check the errata. I'll disagree with the lack of catchup mechanic. There is a minor mechanic. When your species is killed you get cards for each card on the species. that puts you in a better position to create next round. It's not a BIG catch up mechanic but basically that avoids blue shell situations imo. It may not be as perfectly balanced as say Power Grid or even Munchkin (which imo has a TOO balanced catch up mechanism) but it's there and it helps people without making doing well pointless. I say the game focuses on being fun more than making sure everyone has a chance to win and honestly I (and I suspect you guys) am ok with that Shout out to the firstplayer token. The KS edition is a 3D token and it's even MORE awesome.

SuperWolfkin They are wrong. "Reduce the Population of the attacked species by 1. If this reduces its Population to below the amount of food already eaten, place the excess food in the ATTACKED player’s Food Token Bag."

László Cziglédszky ahh ok they just somehow misread the rule that says if you eat a creature that has four food and four population and it's population decreases to 3 then that fourth food just immediately hops into it's owner's bag. That's fine then.

SuperWolfkin Under "Extinction" in the rule book it says "Any food that was on a species killed by a Carnivore is placed in that player's food token bag," and we took that to mean that the player controlling the attacking Carnivore got the leftover food. Given the rules in the "Feeding Carnivores" section, that would mean a species that has been merely attacked is treated differently than a species that has been made extinct. I think I am going to take a look at the forums and/or errata.

***** Great review. The variety might be a little to limited for my taste. P.S. nice undercut and lovely (insert correct name of short hairstyle here). My vocabulary isn't sufficient enought when it comes to women's hairstyles. That, quite strangely, was never a topic in school.

Christopher Zephro our reviews are shot up to a month and a half ago depending on when the videos are released. At the time of the shoot, we didn't have access to the 2nd edition.
