EXPENSIVE GEAR - DOES IT MAKE YOU A BETTER ANGLER?
Do Expensive gear make you a better angler? A lot of people believe this is a thing - the truth is, it's somewhere in the middle. Think of it this way, if you want to have a realistic chance of winning a car race, you first need the skill to be a race car driver and then...a proper race car, without those, you can race, but you won't really have a realistic chance of winning. This is the same for fishing, if you have the skills and the right gear, it makes a difference.

You make a amazing points, its about target species and gear accordingly. I don't have a lot of expensive gear but my expensive gear i have is exactly as you pointed out for bigger hard pulling fish. I fish with sienna's 4000, they are a fantastic cheap reel that handles heaps of fish but are 320g for the reel alone. Paired with 10 and 15lb line and a cheap glass fiber rod they catch 90% of what i fish for from flathead, whiting, and snapper. I have some more expensive setups like a legalis lt 2500 and it has more drag than a 4000 and is 250g total combo weight. Its a much nicer setup for soft plastics and casting all day but also more expensive, from $100 to $200 price difference. My heavy setups for tuna/ kingfish/ shark are $300-500. These setups i use are fairly budget friendly considering what you can spend on fishing gear.

Nice topic Master Kit. Just sharing my experience on jigging using inexpensive gear. Reel price is 2.3k pesos, rod price is 1.5k pesos and mainline is PE 2 worth 800pesos. But I was able land a 61kg Dogtooth Tuna.

Cheap doesn't mean to say its useless, as i mentioned in the video - the consistency in quality of products for cheaper gear is hit and miss, if you get a good one they can function as well as the expensive ones - if you get a bad batch...bad luck. Consistency in quality is high in more expensive gear, less risk in reliability issues.

I 100% agree with all this. I only have top end reels for when I fish for big, strong and fast fish for the size of the reel I use that can put a lot of strain on the reel and specially the break. Then a top end and extremely reliable reel can be of insane value. Losing the fish of your lifetime because you skimped on the gear, is something you NEVER forget. It will eat on your mind for the rest of your life. You need to do some very special fishing to need to have smaller Stella than a 6000 in my opinion and even a 6000 Stella is somethin most don't need at all. For those sizes a mid range to top mid range is plenty good enough for most fishing. But if you prefer to use a spinning reel for jigging and bait fishing, then a 6000 Stella can still be the right choice for you. My largest Stella reels are a 14000 XG that I use for casting and a 20000 PG that I use for fishing with live and dead bait. I don't like to cast a lot with a larger reel than 14000 as I find them to become to heavy and not enjoyable to fish with. I am 6"2, 200 pounds and rather strong, but I still find casting a lot with heavy reels ruins the fun of fishing rather quickly. And I don't like to use heavier gear than I need to use.

Mate, i loved and agree with your perspective. To answer your question, Expensive gear doesn't make you a better angler but you would appreciate it if you are. From my personal experience cheaper gear can make you a better angler since you learn how to land what ever the sea hummers you, with considering the weakness of your gear and that takes you to different ways of fighting. May lose some time but definitely may lose with high end gear too. Appreciate very much your channel mate👍🎣💪 Thank you♥️

I have this running joke when I take inexperienced friends fishing with me on the boat. When they arent catching any fish and start getting restless, I sometimes offer to switch rods...and lo and behold, I still keep catching fish and they still don't. Moral of the story: You can have the best gear, but if you dont know how to use it; you've just wasted money... That being said, the more you do understand and know how to fish, the more specialised your tastes and needs invariably get. Do I NEED an expensive Daiwa Kohga Air rod with a Saltiga IC reel to fish with sliders? No! But do I like the overall tightness and effectiveness of this setup for this specific technique? Yes ! So did I spend money for nothing? Most probably, No !

Spend money on a rod not reel since you only work the jig mostly with the reel specially if spinning was used.. High end gear is only recommended for big fish like yft because you need that extra drag

@@TheFishingKit I mean, spending too much money on medium gear is overkill.. You dont need that much quality except for the rod (and even then not overpay). High end gear matters with big game fishing where you need that durability and performance and reliability

My view on this is kind of different because my experiences have been different from other people - for me, the more you learn and acquire skills, the more you become specific in your fishing and see these things as tools - much like a chef and his knives, you develop preferences and this shapes your buying habits - end of the day, an expensive rod and reel in the hands of someone who just started fishing is not going to miraculously catch a marlin for him in a swimming pool.

Fishing for 20 years. I aquired/developed a lot of respect for fish, a lot of knowledge about fish and experience how to catch it. Believe me or not, gear is almost irrelevant and just a tax for those who are addicted. With 1000 euros, you can cover all inshore techniques, and another 1000 for offshore. Some would say 2000 is a lot, but they have no idea that average sport fisherman spends over 5000 euros and buys probably some junk. This guy from video probably spent 10000 euros before aquiring/developing amazing knowledge he has today

@@TheFishingKit You have no idea how many times i visited tackle shop and witnessed sellers selling junk to common average sport fishermen. And it even goes to total obscurity. Once one guy was searching for boat rod with sensitive tip for catching fish using the bait. The seller sold him 3,3m long robust telescopic rod with semi-hard tip haha. Guy literally just teared appart 250 euros haha. And if he had any knowledge, for that money, he could have bought shimano ultegra xtd and some cheaper lighter slow jigging rod, that would easily serve him 15+ years

Good video, but an old topic in the fishing world. Been fishing for over 40 years. Looking back, I've always said/felt it's about the person's skill/knowledge, and their ability to be consistent first. If you do not have these first and develop these then gear has no effect. The gear and the quality and innovation (if any) will be the second influencing factor to help and allow you to develop better skills and tap into the gear. Unfortunately the opposite is not true. You can reverse this and say the person can have the best gear but are not consistent, have no skill/knowledge how to use the gear it to their advantage. In both scenarios the person has the larger influence on their ability given all else is equal as the fish are hungry, day, location, etc. On another side note, the innovation of gear has not improved or made leaps and bounds enough to allow a child to outfish an experienced angler, whereas the opposite is true.

@@TheFishingKit It's a great topic regardless. 😊 Ya know, I took a Stradic, upgraded all parts to bearings and fine tuned out all the play areas with shims. You can hardly tell the difference in how it feels compared to the same year Stella unless you know what you are looking for. A good video you can go over is simple upgrades to gear you have rather than spending on the highest gear with diminishing returns. 😉

@@Sweetaccord if you know how to modify reels, you can get more performance out of it, but the problem is, after all the spending, at times, it is already the price of the reel you should have bought.
