WATCH THE NEW VIDEO: "How we improved dogs". It's my new, better attempt at the same thing.
This video took me about three days to make, and I feel I had to do it.
Now, I'm not bashing any breed or dog here, I'm "bashing" the people who own and breed them to be this way.
About the Shar-Pei eye tacking - yes I know it is TACKING, but a one-letter-mistake in a 9-minute video when English is not my native language, I think is quite acceptable.
Oh and about the Afghan hound - I don't know how many times I've got the complaint "That's not an Afghan, that's a SALUKI!", but no, it is an Afghan, and here is the proof:
smg.photobucket.com/user/Pieto...
www.afghanhoundtimes.com/shahz...
The breeds I found pictures of but that didn't make it were the Boxer, Borzoi, Bearded Collie, Dogue de Bordeaux, Dachshund and Irish Setter. Then of course MANY more breeds have changed for the worse, but perhaps I couldn't find a good "before" picture.
And I didn't have more time in the video, anyway, which is why I had to cut a few breeds out, and it still became rushed.
About the "disease-texts" - I know they are just flying by but they are more to prove a point than meant to be read completely. If you want to really read them, then pause the video.
The sources? Books, Kennel Club homepages, breed-specific sites (written by people who really know the breeds)...
Like I said, I have nothing against ANY dog breed.
Just some of the people who own and breed them.
Basset Hound - Awful, and just more of the bad excuses of the show breeders. "They have that skin so they can turn more easily in the bushes" - right... "They have skin folds over their eyes and ears long enough to step on so they should only focus on their sense of smell" - right...
Chow Chow - There's no justification for breeding a dog like that. Where are the eyes? Why the exaggerated coat (which puts some dogs into heat stroke)? Why the straight hind legs?
Shar-Pei - One sad story. Take a look at the Thai Ridgeback Dog - then look at the traditional Shar-Pei. Look at the TRD's puppies - they look like Shar-Pei almost, don't they?
Those are the wrinkles people exaggerated because they wanted their dogs wrinkly as adults too.
AT LEAST 40-50% of SP puppies has to have their eyes "tacked", meaning, sewn and attached to the skin of the forehead or neck, to avoid them getting really bad entropion at a very young age.
How can anyone justify this?
Pekingese - Now... what does the standard say... Oh, yes. "Nose: Not too short", "Muzzle: Must be evident, but may be relatively short", "Hair: Moderately long", "Length and volume of coat should neither impair the activity of the dog nor obscure the shapeliness of body. Excessive coat must be heavily penalised."
Can the Pekingese judges and breeders read?
Mastino Napoletano: What a beautiful dog this was. I say this as an owner of one of the original mastiff breeds, and I would love to have a Mastino, had they existed like they were sixty years ago.
Basically all molossers can trace their heritage back to the roman arenas, but no molosser has owners more keen to illustrate this heritage than the Mastino.
And no other molosser has evolved away from that heritage more than the Mastino. They are but a shadow of their past.
English Bulldog - Probably the dog farthest away from the original shape, of all the breeds on this Earth. Don't get me wrong, some look fairly good, not all are horribly sick, but seriously... as long as dogs with grotesque, oversized heads, narrow hips, horrible hip dysplasia, heart diseases, noses at most one centimeter long, and airways so tight and deformed they constantly snore and struggle to breathe are awarded at dog shows - I see no hope for this breed.
How anyone can breed animals who can barely move freely, breathe freely and mate and give birth without insemination and C-section with their conscience intact is beyond me.
This is animal cruelty.
Animal cruelty which is completely legal, and even supported by lots and lots of people.
I'm going to get even more harsh and say - dog fighting. That's a horrible practice that puts millions of dogs into horrible pain every year.
This is not much better.
Now, like I said in the video, not all of these dogs are sick, and not all of the "good" examples are healthy, definitely not. But - and this is also why I finished the video with a picture of a wolf - the wolf's shape is how nature decided this species is to be constructed.
You can move away from that shape somewhat without it causing any harm, but the farther away from the original shape you go, the higher the cost will be - for the dogs.
There are no excuses for this.

Oh my goodness - you have got inside my head! This is exactly what we have been saying about a lot of breeds and I agree with your questioning of the changing standards. Exactly WHO decides what the breed should be like? One more point - the GSD is my dog and I am appalled at the breed of today. Crippled, deformed it breaks my heart to see the new GSD

Thank you for this video. It actually made me cry. I have for many years felt anger at the various kennel clubs in Europe and North America for permitting the breed standards we have today to have become so dreadful. In the late 80s I had GSDs. Neither of them looked like the GSDs today. One was a show dog. To see today's GSD breaks my heart. To see Pekes and Old English bulldogs and any of the other similar faced breeds suffering as they do also breaks my heart.

@Kiisseli1 I love my working kelpie. I watched a fan and owner of a show ACD after her agility class. The dog's jumps were short and she had to lift him into her SUV. He wasn't old, or disabled. He was just built like a sausage. Even some of the breeds supposedly "not ruined" are more ruined than folks realized. I never have to lift my kelpie into anything. Jumps like a charm!

@AgilityBeagle : When the Sheltie has such a thick coat, not only does dirt & debris get stuck in it, it also forms hair balls which can then turn the dog lame. I've seen hotspots that were not caught because the coat was so thick & dense that the maggots were able to live within. The problem with breeding for 'beauty' is that health & function are usually the sacrifice.

If you bred a visla in siberia, it would still be a lean, short-coated breed. They don't pop out with long, fluffy hair in a single generation. So if left outside during winter, the pups born in siberia would likely die. Visla mix pups would still have some traits from the visla. The hair would probably be longer from the terrier, and they might be a different color, but they'd likely still have fairly long legs and a deeper chest and some of that distinctive face.

I work at a veterinary hospital. Several of the shelties that come in are nasty, and we had one that required a muzzle even at 8 weeks old. I've also seen plenty with a ton of hair. I was surprised to see the change in the face and that they went from a more typical dog face to the dolichocephalic collie head.

@Equilibrium389 The Bull Terrier was designed by James Hinks as a show dog. That is why he created the "White cavalier". If he wanted a fighting dog he wouldn't have used such breeds as the Dalmatian and spaniels and wouldn't have focused on coat colour. Their head shape causes no issues with the dogs ability to breathe, eat or perform their original purpose as a SHOW DOG!

Many collie breeders also breed for temperament. The collies that I have met with bad temperament are ones that are coming from back yard breeders, where the breeder is only wanting to make a quick buck. Just like with labs and goldens. Collies from a show home will now typically have the temperament they should. That goes for the rough and smooth coat collies.

I do agree some of the transformations are some what extreme but the standards are put there to make the breeds better and by showing the breed it makes its lines come out better thus making the breed a healthy breed in the future. Not all breeds are like this! I show dogs at open and championship shows such as Crufts and each breed is evolving making the future of the breed come out better. We only show to make the future of dogs a better one by promoting healthy breeding.

i can say something about SPs, first of all u have now two types of this dog one with little wrencles, short hair and thin-bone structure (in my country called american type) and secound type a bit shorter with more skin and wisibly wider bones ( in my country called traditional ones). I had a few dogs bassets, neapolitans, arlequins, spaniels, but this one is special, THE HEALTHIEST OF ALL. I have the more wrinkly one and he is already 15 yo. Still in good shape despite heart problems( but doesnt need medications, just cant run non stop for 15miles and thats all) he even doesnt show his age. If he was not from a good breeder farm he would die a long time ago, some of my friends had not THAT much luck with their SP ( ammerican type all three dogs) cancers, dysplasia, losing fur (finally almost bold) now i am moving to a village to continue my friends SPs and Mastiffs farm ;) i love his idea to try to breed them the healthiest possible, he finds partners from the other side of globe to prevent genetic mutations he tries to give the dogs possibility of living healthy happy long life and he does it not for income or prizes, u can not buy a dog from him, u have to sign an adoption contract which doesnt allow u to do certain things and contains a learning period for new fammily if u pass it u can get a perfect puppy to love and u can be sure u will get controlled and supported whenever it is needed. the sad thing is that there r not many breeders like my friend, and in my country they r preparing to make it illigal to breed mixed dogs so i think some regulations should be maid also for "clean blood" breaders to prevent making dogs disfunctional, aspecially importand is to avoid mental problems among dogs... but all this problems are becouse ppl doesnt use dogs as they did in past, so they do not fill the RESPONSIBILITY for making them disfunctional!

You have overlooked the impact of electric hair dryers on the coat volume of dogs. It fluffs and maximizes their coats so the old photos to modern photos is a bit misleading in some cases. As far as excessive coat it concerned, it is easily scissored or clippered off and does not hamper a dog carrying out it's function then, as in the case of American Cocker Spaniels. You will be able to find shaved down photos of working show-bred cockers if you search online for them. Some of the photos are extremes that are NOT typical of what the majority of breeders present in the show ring. So some misleading occurring here ...

Humans created dog 32000 years ago and humans will never stop. That's just who we are sadly. Short muzzle/snout was actually an accident that was created long time ago because they tend to have problem with their breathing system but some people actually liked that silly look on the dog and that was why they continued on breeding those accidental dog breeds which are now bulldogs, pugs, etc.

First I would like to state that dog breeds are a human invention. They were created by human beings. I just wanted people to understand this, because the video could be taken the wrong way in that there were breeds that already existed and, thanks to human intervention, were changed. It is correct to say that human beings did change many dogs of certain breeds from what they originally looked like. A great deal of that is because of the start of kennel clubs and dog shows, where people bred more for looks than performance. People bred for what they wanted to see rather than what dogs could do or should be able to do. I don't like the view that many kennel clubs and dog shows have in regards to dogs and their breed. Views many kennel clubs seem to have are things such as purity and being quick to not allow for any breeding outside of their club--canceling potentially great genetic material simply because of unrealistically strict and distorted views they have on what a dog of a certain breed should look like. I think that it is important to understand that, when we get right down to it, all domesticated dogs are mixed or what is many times referred to as a "mutt." Truthfully there are no purebred dogs. That's not to say that dog breeds do not exist. Breed is a construct created by humans from breeding certain dogs or other breeds that have been created together for uniformity for certain traits or certain purposes. That is why there are breed standards for these breeds to dictate whether or not a dog is of a certain breed. There is a very informative video called "The Bizarre Truth About Purebred Dogs (and Why Mutts Are Better) - Adam Ruins Everything" that can be found on KZfaq which discusses this. I think that a better term for "purebred" should be used when referring to dog breeds. I believe that something like "thorough-bred" or "fully-bred" would be better terms to use. I also believe that people should go back to the concept of type rather than breed. Our ancestors did not breed for uniformity for a certain look or to strictly match a certain set of standards. They bred more for jobs or roles which did lead to distinct variation in appearance between the types. In the past, there were types of dogs instead of breeds. For example, there were Retrievers, Pointers, Spaniels, Sheepdogs, Livestock Guardian Dogs, Hounds, Mastiffs, Bulldogs or Bull types, and even Toy types or Pet types. Any dog that did the work or filled the role and looked somewhat like a type of dog was that type of dog. But make no mistake, our ancestors did take breeding seriously, maybe even more seriously than people do today, for they were not focused so much on how a dog looked. They were much more concerned about how it performed or if it could fill its role well. Going by type would help increase diversity in dogs so that the gene pool would not be as limited or restricted and can lead to healthier and more physically and mentally sound dogs. Also, by breeding for jobs and roles more than conforming to specific looks, more people will be breeding more for health and soundness for what the dogs are bred for or for what they want them to be able to do or fulfil. That all being said, I must say that breed is not necessarily a bad concept. When people breed for health and soundness and do not sacrifice what is important for the sake of a certain look, things are ideal. It is when people let visual gratification get in the way that problems could arise in overall structure and composition of dogs. Some standards or directions for which some breeders are going need to be changed for some breeds. There are dog shows out there where the dogs that are winning and considered best in show are not the best structurally sound dogs. For example, there are very flat-nosed and low-to-the-ground English Bulldogs that win best in show even when some of them cannot breath properly, breed naturally, or give birth naturally because the puppies are too wide to go through the birth canal. Such dogs need artificial insemination to breed and veterinarian assistance to give birth. This problem in some dogs of this breed could be corrected without even breeding outside of the breed by only breeding dogs of that breed that can breed and give birth naturally and leaving the ones that can't out of the breeding program as well as making sure that the dogs who can breath and move easily and well are the ones that are bred and not the ones that cannot.

I had a older style not show-able collie with the older style coat and my show collies with the correct show coat all our collies go out and play and work in the elements that they would do the same back in 1915's and in my years of experience I have found that the newer show coat in collies is just as functional today or even more functional on protecting them from the elements but good video

Do we know anything at all about the health questions in these early dogs? Does anyone think that deafness in a bull terrier is a new phenomenon ? Most probably deafness was more widespread in the breed at Hinks (the creator of the white strain around 1850) time rather than today.

The english bulldog was recreated as the Olde english bulldogge now a larger muscular agile dog. But yes the english bulldog was mixed with pug i think, so yeah they got messed. Especially the neo...

@AgilityBeagle I agree.Maybe they were neutered and that does makes a difference . I am judging Shelties next year ,and I will still be looking for the correct coat , most of us only have to feel the texture and we know if it is a neutered shetland sheepdog .

Nice production! No need to pic on our lovely Neo's any longer - even the 'standards' have improved vastly in recent years (ie. no more docking of tails/ears), and the breeding programs seek to produce strong, massive and healthy specimens with no 'degenerative' traits. Yes, there remain idiots who will compromise looks over function, but no one will want their stock! You last comparison of the old-Neo to modern, in fact shows an old Cane Corso, which is much sleeker than the Neo - fyi.

Video uploader has done a lot of research and knows his/her stuff about dog breeds! Very interesting video. :-) I didn't know the English Bull Terrier had changed that much and had so many health problems. Kind of sad really, as I love the EBT. I wonder if the American Bulldog has any problems... As I have one. :3

Brilliant video,we really have messed up these beautiful animals, how can any breeder think that modification of DNA to more or less mutate the animal from its original natural look , can possibly be beneficial to the animal?.Ive been looking to buy a Shar pei ,and I honestly thought, that the wrinklier the Shar pei the better, this video has changed my mind now that I've seen what a Traditional Shar pei should look like!,so thank you. I always thought it didn't seem right that a dog should have so many skin problems and issues with their eyes when they were meant to be that way lol,how stupid was I?!.Great video, & thanks for educating me!.

I felt the same when choosing a dog. I kind of liked the Shetland, but was annoyed with that too much of a fur, it looks weird. Kept looking for breeds but everytime something stopped me..... I decided to adopt, I wanted a dog from Romania where they are miserable.... the dogs I was attracted to were all muts. Look like dogs, not like fancy breads. The one I chose is a real cute mix of I don't even know what :))))

One thing i have to say is that some dogs had to change to survive... Spanish Water Dogs have stayed the same throughout and are still used for herding. SWD's look the same weither their herding, fishing or showing.

Thank you for this video. I get grossed out just watching German Shepherds in the ring. (One reason I don't go to shows anymore.) How can a dog herd sheep if it can only "run" in a half crouch.) The mentality is "If X is good, double X is better." So a slight dip in the spine become a bowed spine. A thick coat becomes a coat that no dog could run through a field without ruining. A shortened muzzle becomes so short the dog can hardly breathe. The wolf? Perfectly engineered.

Amazing video! Only thing I have to throw out for consideration is the division of many breeds into an "American" and "European" style...GSDs for example- the american lines emphasize the sloping back. Boxers have this division too- euro stock have more mastiff type heads, where American stock have slightly longer snouts. It will be interesting to see how many of these breeds split in the future- following the division of the American and English Cocker Spaniels!
