As a tile artist I am pleased you are using hand crafted tile. It will add so much warmth to the kitchen. The layout for your new kitchen and cabinet choices are in keeping with the feeling of the château while giving it modern function. Love drawers over cabinet bases any day of the week. They are so much easier.

After recently installing a new kitchen I decided on drawer units instead of cupboards and it’s been fantastic. Everything is in reach and so easy to organize. I also used handcrafted tiles. I must say I love my new kitchen.🇦🇺

The hand made tiles are exciting. And ads what used to be here. Tiles that are individual and nothing is perfect. We love them. We need the function but wanted to keep the feeling and materials true to the origins. And indeed. We did all drawers in our last 2 US kitchens. Love it absolutely. Hugs and thank you so very much. 😘💕😘

I remodeled my kitchen once. Three-plus months, husband and 3 children, lots of take-away food, and I came away from it with a wonderful kitchen, storage for everything, and an extreme dislike for take-away food, i.e. pizza is no longer a treat. I enjoyed that kitchen for about 10 years, then we moved into another older home with a kitchen area that would have cost a fortune to redo, and I am not a big fan of taking out perfectly good cabinets and having those tossed into a dumpster. So, I saved resources, but am still living with a galley kitchen. Children are grown and gone. I have a huge pantry area that I did have put in a room right off the kitchen, so all is well. I love your plan. Don't forget the slotted area for those baking sheets, muffin pans, and pizza (no thank you) pans. Kudos. I will be rooting for you.

You never have enough cabinets in a kitchen. It will be very nice. My setup all flows to left of my sink. Starting with the dishwasher. Then stove. Because I am left handed so it really works well for me.

Patrick and Stuart, Great plans for your kitchen--I love the placement of the "piano" and the selection for the floors and walls. The new cabinets will be a wonderful upgrade, however, I caution you to add toe kicks to the cabinets instead of the feet. i moved into a new apartment in Chicago last summer and the cabinets have feet and I am forever lying on the floor with a broom trying to keep it clean. I'm still finding Cheerios and dog kibble from the previous owners. When i replaced the dishwasher, the installers found 5 tennis balls wedged in back of the old one. I got a Roomba simply because it will vacuum under there.
@JourneytotheChateau
@JourneytotheChateau Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't think we said that we would not have toe kicks. We may add them later, but just getting the new kitchen installed and working is the priority. We have built kitchens with both, so we know the pros and cons of toe kicks on cabinetry. Thanks!

Patrick & Stewart…you stated your kitchen needed to be functional and as I watched you today, all I look at, just about the whole vlog was…I love that fireplace and watch the fire burning! The kitchen also is the Heart if the Home and you keeping the table, using a Jack hammer to level the floor of the fireplace are two elements that will help your kitten to have its “heart.” I am sure there is laughter and love there now and I am sure there will be in the future. Memories are such precious things and the both of you will certainly be going thru many of them as you start this project. When it gets overwhelming, hold each others hand, take your babies and go for a long walk. Exciting times ahead!

I am so glad you are going with a practical space. One thing to think about is how long you will be standing on the floor at one time. Maybe having a rubber mat in front of the places you will spend most of the time standing.. if you can find ones that look like the floor they wouldn’t seem out of place. I am looking forward to seeing the end product,I am sure you will do a great job.

Your kitchen plans look great. We used similar wall tile in our shower. Love the look. We had two floats to use for the grout, and we found that one of them had a softer base (?). This was the one that worked the best with the irregular surface of the tile. The float with the harder base didn't have enough give to get the grout in place. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

Wow big plans and a lot of work. Are you insulating the floor? Before you lay the limestone tiles seal them as it prevents the tile adhesive staining the limestone. After grouting reseal again - I did 5 coats on mine in total, 2 before laying and 3 after. The floor has held up well resisting staining and easy to clean. I use hg stone cleaner. Love all your choices. I think the tumbled limestone is a good choice. We have used limestone in all our bathrooms and we are about to replace the ceramic tiles in our kitchen with limestone as it is much more forgiving and you only need to reseal it once a year. There is a grout you can use that repels dirt, I think it is an epoxy grout - worth checking out. We have both our dishwasher and large fridge freezer in our adjacent utility room and I find it works well. Good luck, I don't envy you. I think I would have used a specialist to do all the tiling once you have done the prep. Two reasons from experience a good tiler is worth every penny both from the finish they achieve but also the speed of installation which would massively speed up your project.

As when your entertaining and running it the kitchen would be well used and cooking all the time which will help with the warmth in the kitchen. But uses the space and make it look wonderful. This also frees up space to add units etc to display and hold what you need to host guests etc. love the flooring your putting in as will really open up the space. Having unit too space also will allow you to have equipment on show and plenty of space to prepare. I love a good scullery (butlers pantry in Oz). Storage for preserves but also have a cleaning area etc. to work around.

Love your kitchen design and especially love your gorgeous flooring choice. Absolutely don't worry about your kitchen being dark. New lighting will make it as light as you want it to be. I might suggest that you think about a beverage fridge underneath your coffee station otherwise your houseguests will be looking for the milk/cream etc. You can always use a panel to make it blend with your cupboards. Your counter might serve as an intimate wine station as well and your beverage fridge could accommodate that use as well.

Exiting! I designed and built a small open plan kitchen/livingroom in the 90s with Moroccan hand made tiles in terracotta with a light grey glaze all the way to the ceiling on two walls, and the other walls painted in a matching matte grey color, it was Gorgeous!!! If you're working with this form of tile there are very important things to know from the get go: First, order alot more than you'll need! Even with decent crating these tiles are more fragile than others and you'll loose quite a few (breakage) and some will be less attractive than others, so really give yourself some extra square meters of wiggle room. Any excess can be used for beautiful garden tables, or a fountain, a garden feature. Secondly, you definately can NOT tile with these like you normally do, ie using x-spacers and supports, rope, using a level etc, impossible, and ugly. Using Moroccan tile you must tile like they do in Morocco. That means minimizing the grout berween tiles as much as possible (only milimeters) no rope, and accepting there won't be a straight, plumb grid in the end. This is in fact also what makes the result so stunning in the end, even using white monochrome it still becomes much like an organic ancient mosaic only in slightly larger scale. DO NOT worry about lines being uneven, not straight, that it will look weird, I assure you it wont, the whole look depends on this! Thirdly your tiles are more likely than not going to be of quite dramatically different thickness, which is unique to these types of tile, also the glaze will vary alot, and sometimes the outer dimensions even. So start by dividing them in piles according to glazing, and thickness, at least 4 piles. The base grouting is important, and add the tiles one by one horizontally and with minimum separation, and fit from the piles like laying a puzzle thinking about the variations of glaze reasonably spread out. Don't grout more wall than you tile in a day, work organically area for area, rather than systematically (in layers) Once that has all dried treating the tiles before grouting the spaces between them, will help so the excess grout is easily removed and the glaze sheen intact. There are several traditional Moroccan methods for this, worth looking at, not expensive, just a different step/method than normal. Ever since I left that home and kitchen I've wanted to make another bigger kitchen using these, they are just SO beautiful, timeless, artful yet monochrome, and reflect light in a hundred different directions like the surface of water. I used to have a pottery studio, so this choice makes me very happy! I have two suggestions after listening. One is to use some part of your counter space to house your most often used electrical appliances and consider housing them behind a roll top inside a cabinet if they are many or not too pleasing to look at. Taking them out of cabinets and plugging in every time is a pain in the butt. An alternative would be to do what a friend of mine did who uses lots of gadgets: he tiled a used industrial trolley/wheel mounted tiered storage cart, added a row of electrical sockets and stored them in the unit under the counter. When he needs to use a machine he pulls it out and places it on the top. Easy, practical and you dont need to sacrifice other storage or carry things and mess around. Thirdly: consider all the rooms lighting needs before getting started. The worklight on counters, the overhead lights for general lighting, any in cabinet lights, and your ambient lights and dining lights. Have all that electrical done before everything is fitted and splurge on dimmers compatible with LEDs (!) with settings you can adjust once in a while but also allows you to just press and not adjust ( allowing a preset). It will save you alot of trouble, and ugly afterthought wiring. Consider using sockets with flap covers, or embedding sockets in counter tops with flap lids to minimize visible wires for things plugged in, and dirt/grease collecting over time. Small details that are so worth and difficult to add sucessfully later. Lastly in light of your future plans I would advise planning for a dish and potwashing station in one of your adjacent secondary kitchens with sink. Restaurant style, with deep stainless steel sink and flex arm with shower attachement. If planning big events, B&B, this will be extremely handy for all high intensity periods. Even better if that space has a floor drain and space for a regular restarant kitchen dishwasher (that closes from overhead). Those can be found cheaply at second hand outlets from professional kitchens thatnhave been dismantled and sold for parts. Total game changer if often working larger events over longer than a single meal, like weekends, weddings, etc. That can come later but its good to have included in your overall scheme. I think your plans look great! You're absolutely right about the soul and style of a Chateau kitchen being one of practicality not opulence . It's also a place where people gather and are active together so you don't want fussy or fragile materials, it's the creativity and company at hand that's the focal point, and everyone is comfortable in the kitchen bc it's the most informal environment! You're in for a real ride here, and it's a bitch to get through, but as long as you have an alternative space for cooking in the meantime (and don't quarrel too much about it) it will be so worth while and one of the biggest achievements you'll enjoy every single day for the rest of your lives. Worth remembering this 😉 Godspeed boys! Whoot! ❤️

Thank you so much for sharing the plans and explanations. It's going to be beautiful. Wondering if the cut out could be used to slide in a secret safe, hidden and accessed through one of the back panels of the cabinet. Could you have heating units that are available for under the base cabinets, thus eliminating the heating stove and stove pipe. It would allow way for heat to be distributed unobtrusively around the room. Another option would be under-floor heating beneath those beautiful new tiles. That would leave room for more cabinets beside the cook stove and restore balance. It would also eliminate the need to hang cooking utensils at the back of the stove where reaching for them over open flames may be a safety issue and where they would need continual de-greasing. They could be hung to each side of the cook stove above cabinets, and the stainless-steel square could be eliminated allowing for more unified look of the beautiful tiles.

We bought an end of line kitchen for 600e for our house as we thought it was going to be a holiday home. After being trapped in a flat in the uk during the pandemic we quickly moved and made it our permanent home. Of course the kitchen isn't suitable for full time living so can't wait to re-do it when Ive finished upstairs, hopefully in the spring. Good morning Patrick & Stuart, I think there are two major must have/be in the kitchen, space and light. You have that as you say not much light but enough. Then pull-outs are the only way for a kitchen, believe me, I am senior now, that crawling into a space and things are heavy, no no you don't want that, even your spices laid flat in a shallow drawer is great. For the Baker, a mixer can also be heavy lifting out and placing on the counter, if the mixer can have a permanent space and if you bake very often yes, let it stand out. Remember it is your kitchen, this is a once in a lifetime venture, so make the best of it, you have planned this well, I am sure you will be very happy afterwards. Try to lay the floor tiles wall to wall before you place the cabinets, it seals the floor completely in case of water it cannot go underneath! The stove looks wonderful which is a very important feature in a kitchen. I am sure you will find a perfect tool to remove the bricks and concrete, in our modern times there are great tools to assist us in our projects. Wishing you all the best, it won't be too bad, just mind over matter. Enjoy. Kind regards.

Hi Stuart and Patrick, love the new kitchen plans. The new floor will be gorgeous. In the UK the wood burner needs to be elevated from the floor on a hearth. Doesn’t this apply in France? Patrick, I’m jealous of your glorious hair, so pleased you keep it long (sadly my hair is thinning at 71 yrs old) not a good look for a lady!! Love to you both x

Thank you so much. The burners are on legs and are on non flammable surfaces. That’s the rule. So they are elevated. The inserts we will use are the same. All good. 😘. I am glad you like my hair. I sometimes want to cut it all off. 😮. I won’t…. Not yet. 😊. It is sad when it starts thinning. But hang in there. It is gorgeous, regardless. Love from Colombe. 💗💖💗

The kitchen layout looks wonderful adding light, warmth and function. The floor and wall tiles are in keeping with the chateau and the imperfections make it appear more authentic. I couldn’t tell but the stove looks like La Cornue, which is exquisite. I look forward to hearing about how you will be handling the untiled walls in the kitchen. They are around much longer than La Cornue and that made the difference for us. 😮😅. Now the untilled walls….. we don’t know yet. We might sand them down and leave them rustic and repaint with chalk paint……. We will take it from there….. 😂😂😂. Be safe and thank you, as always, for your wonderful comments. ❤😘🥰

I personally think the areas like kitchens and bathrooms should reflect the present owner's ideas of style, comfort, practicality and beauty. I loved your kitchen design so far. We have the same tiles in light cream colour in two different finishes. Satin sheen and matt and I absolutely love the effect they produce as different light reflection adds to the handmade quality of these tiles. It is a personal preference and other people might disagree. I also love shaker style cabinets. They do look like old chateau panelling don't they? The stove you have ordered is a dream for any kitchen. I only hope that it will not compete with the wood burner being in one space. This is the only "not quite sure" moment, perhaps it upsets my love of balance kind of thing. Otherwise well done guys! Can not wait to see it done. ❤👍

I agree with you 100%. Although we absolutely love input, some comments are a bit abrasive….. the hand made tiles are such perfect choices for a chateau from the 17th and 18th century. And add a lot of interest for any style. As for shaker style….. it is a classic for a few centuries. So, no going wrong with that style. The wood burning stove used to be a wood cooker. Huge and it heated the chateau to boot as well as provided hot water. The wood burner will continue to use the chimney and the exhaust will be vented out the side of the chateau. Thank you so much and love your input. 😊❤

Your search for all the hard services and cabinets sounds very intense but it sure looks like the time was well spent as this is going to be there for a long long time so the design period is crucial. Bright, functional and time period appropriate. Shall we talk about the show stopper? Maybe it deserves to be on stage (just kidding). Wow, that cooker is spectacular! I saw an amazing kitchen that was split up, half for cooking half for baking. It might be a good idea for you so Stuart can have lots of room to bake. Or maybe another room just for baking. It seems like in a chateau, he could have his own space to do what he loves most. Just a thought. Another building would be very in keeping with the past. Does your Chateau have a kitchen in the basement? I don't remember you mentioning the basement at all. Maybe yours doesn't have one. I hope all goes well in your renovations ❤️

Good choices for the kitchen; functional, tasteful, and not over the top. As you mentioned, the kitchens of that era were meant to be functional and not showplaces. The tiles and cabinetry with drawers are perfect. I used all drawers in my last kitchen here in the US (that house has been sold due to my upcoming move to France. Oops, sent without finishing...I also wanted to mention the newly finished kitchens at Lalacelle Cottage and at La Fleur. I've really enjoyed watching everybody tear down to bare bones, then painstakingly put back together the most gorgeous rooms that contain "all the modcons" yet maintain the feeling of the house.Such long, patient, carefully detailed work, such satisfying results...it takes a special type of person to be a chatelaine. I do love to watch you all in action from my comfy hygge livingroom, wish I could sit down around the table with you all to talk over the day. I'm not sure about having the woodstove right next to the cookstoves. You've had log burners before ne'ce pas? They are so hot and messy, require a certain space in winter, nice to gather around....but usually unlit in summer Woodstove needs chimney but cookstoves doesn't, right? So they don't necessarily have to be next to each other....Humm, just thinking. Whatever you decide will be beautiful I know. Peace-out for now ( :

love that you're keeping it rustic and not to making it too "current". I love an unfitted kitchen and while I understand how modern cabinetry really suits our lives today, I'm trying to figure out how to "conceal" all the handy internal hardware - pull outs etc. (I'm working on kitchen remodeling plans too). I think I'm going to fit those into old cabinets/furniture. You fellas got a Lacanche? Woohoo! Good for you! I just bought a 48" Forte' and love having 8 full burners. With all the entertaining it will suite you well. Great investment and hoping you'll do a whole vid on it when you get it. They are gorgeous! Two years ago when we gutted a bath (we live in 120 year old house) I wanted Zellige tiles. The price point wasn't in the budget but I loved the look. I ended up finding at good old Home Depot tiles named Amagansett. They're ceramic with that hand made texture and are a soft eggshell color. They were the right choice for me. I added big clawfoot tub with an insert in the wall behind it ,hardwood floors, sconces, etc., and they gave the bathroom the aged look I was going for plus they were budget friendly. (And have that Zellige look!) I've seen them used in kitchens and am thinking of using them in mine. We'll see. So after being that long winded... I'm thinking that's the texture you're looking for which I think is perfect for your kitchen. You're right - the tiles you're thinking of will add the age and not scream "new tiles". One thing before I forget - if I may give an unsolicited opinion, that indent in the wall that you plan to cover with a backsplash. One thing that I always find that lends charm and age to a room are nooks. Since it's practical to cover it, perhaps think of adding some nooks around the range.. along the side walls. Even other wall space if you can do it. thank you as always for sharing. it's great to live vicariously and you two are just too fun!!

Mantel? Lintel? Lentils? Ooh the new stove/oven is so shiny! So it will vent through the fireplace? Muppet flail over hand made tiles. Thank you for sharing about the North African glazing technique. I think I have seen that but didn't realize that it was ceramic tile. What color will the grout be--grey? And will it be chunkier than in the photo? I've only done one kitchen redo and I selected hand made tile for the countertop and backsplash. I had magazine photos (pre-internet) that I showed the tile layer, and he said that he would make the grout chunky and wide. I did not even know that this was what was needed to make the look I wanted until he said that. I was so happy! It only makes sense that you would select tiles that look old for the floor because of the flow of the enfilade floor plan. You currently have the same or less cupboards and drawers than a 1 bedroom apartment in the U.S.! Stuart needs his things for baking and things need to be baked! What might be the effect of the vibrations from the jackhammer. The structure and things like chandeliers and porcelain that are in other rooms?

Hi Patrick and Stuart, I love the ideas that you have for the new kitchen. Having done a wedding at our home with 80 seated guests and an annual Passover Seder with 36 seated guests, we found that having a second microwave and two dishwashers was a blessing when it came to cleaning up. We are also considering adding a food compactor to help us manage the enormous amount of recyclable plastics that come and go from our home. I have also had since my first home a separate refrigerator and freezer, it was a g-d sent to have them for storage of precooked starters and desserts. Now we are looking at what Stephanie purchased, only back in the US, we can get a Freezer, Refrigerator, and one that is convertible to either one as needed. And if you can't get the sink under a window, I'd put it on the island if you are planning for one. AT least two ovens are a must. I'll keep watching and see how the kitchen renovation moves alone. You just have to get use to the dust that goes along with all of this. lol. Remember to take a day off occasionally so that you don't get totally consumed by it all.

So true. Thank you. I hope we remember. This is our 3rd renovation together…..😮. We must be insane. 😂. Good luck with your continuous renovations. You already have done a lot of work. Our last renovation took 5 years…. We will be busy for a while here. And the dust is the spice of it all. Hugs and thank you. 🥰💕🥰

Oh that kitchen is going to be stunning. The tiles that you guys are going to use are just so gorgeous. Being handcrafted gives the tiles that labour of love vibe and a nod to colombes history considering the staircase and all its wonky-ness 🤣🥰 its such a gem, it reminds me of the staircase to no-where in the Winchester House in America 🤣🤣🤣 I can't wait to see that kitchen transform. Its so exciting!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 There is just sooo much to look forward too with you both and colombe!!! 🥰🥰😘😘❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Yes! Pull-out drawers are awesome. I loathe playing Tetris to get things in and out of cupboards. I dig how sweet you are with each other. Thanks for another great video.

Oh my goodness, I too look at things from the point of view of keeping it clean. Especially living with animals (mine are rescue cats). I think your plans are brilliant. Love that you're keeping the historical feeling. It will look great. Love your videos. God Bless.

I’m absolutely sure that your new kitchen will be stunningly beautiful 😍 Just what a chateau like yours need. My only concern is the staircase. It is so beautiful and if you cover it all up with a wall you won’t be able to see it anymore. I just think it brings so much character to the room. It makes it unique. It also reaches out to the fireplace and the very old cupboard you have in there. But that’s just my thoughts. I just love old staircases 🥰 I’m sure it will be a beautiful room whatever you do to it. Good luck! Looking forward to see the results 🤗♥️

Ohh my a French oven...la canche. I've always dreamed of one. Now Stuart can bake away everyday. I wouldn't want to be tipsy on the leaning stairway especially traveling downward. This is all very exciting.

Love that oven and it’s not even here. 🤣. Indeed, I expect lovely baked wares on a regular basis 😉😂. That staircase tipsy might be a challenge….. 😅. It is very exciting and thank you so much for your wonderful comment. Hugs. ❤

Love your cabinet and tile choices. If the tiles are porous I would recommend sealing them otherwise cleaning them will be hell. Can’t wait to see your journey with the kitchen renovation. I’m sure it will be spectacular. Thanks for sharing 😍😘
