CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Gang members attempt to kill William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas) during a drive-by shooting.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. It's up to reluctant cop Prendergast (Robert Duvall), on the eve of his retirement, to bring D-FENS down.

This is when you can first tell he's totally gone. He was just raging and blowing off steam before, but the way he doesn't even react to the gunfire and doesn't seem to care about the other people who were shot by the gangbangers shows that he's lost. Picking up the gun and shooting the guy was only natural at that point.

My ex has tried that one as she banned my daughter from talking on the phone with me despite a court order. A mother that antagonizes the father will always lose her daughter. My daughter is insanely angry at her mother and the dint get along at all. Teenagers can be very bitter over being controlled.
@mgh7634
@mgh7634 16 күн бұрын
@@imsnowedn oh yeah. And unless the man was truly horrible to the point of earning his child's hatred, then at the end, it doesn't matter what a court says, the mother loses because she ends up with a bitter, resentful child. Maybe that child will forgive her eventually but that relationship will never be truly the same and the years of anger and hatred aren't so easily undone. There's good reason it's called a broken home. It doesn't mend just because one parent decides the other isn't needed anymore.

I'm old enough to remember when this movie first came out. It was lauded as one of the best movies of the year, when it came out. Underrated? Don't think so. At least not back then. It's modern day critics who aren't hot on this film. Those fuckwits on Rotten Tomatoes wouldn't know a good movie if it ran them over.

@@sturgeon2888 I didn't see it when it first cam out. My husband did. He bought it on DVD when it was released. I watched it with him then. It's a masterpiece. I'm glad I still have it. I need to rewatch it. I think it's safe to call it underrated these days. A lot of people have (unfortunately) forgotten about it or never heard about it at all. I had never heard of it before he introduced me to it. I had also never heard of The Game before he put the DVD on and I watched it with him. Another Michael Douglas masterpiece. I still have that DVD too.

This is the comment that I was looking to get mirrored from my own perceptions from news reports of what actually happens in our neighborhoods, (shooter hitting everything else except the intended person he's so obsessed with taking their life). Although now that gangs have sort of subsided or ebbed a bit, this clownish situation happens less frequently. It was the 90's 🙄 even the rich kids had homegirl Old English belt buckles in chrome , or initials.

From my understanding it's the fact they tried shooting at him from a moving car, their aim would be difficult to adjust as they were constantly moving. What makes this scene so clever is the fact that had he flinched or moved to evade the fire he would've been hit, but due to the fact he is more invested in the phone call he is apathetic toward everything around him. Showing how much he's mentally fallen as for a normal person would've flinched and ran.

I always love movie scenes like this that show that if your going to spray a machine gun on full auto, then you'll probably end up missing alltogether or hitting everything besides what you were aiming at! That scene in Pulp Fiction where the guy hiding in the bathroom with the huge revolver runs out guns blazing and misses every shot from point blank was great too! Lol
@BunyipDude

Well, nowadays, I think the common wisdom in most militaries is that full-auto is meant more for suppressive fire, not hitting targets. But in this case, the gang was also stupid for opening fire while the car was moving.
@mdemers767
@mdemers767 2 жыл бұрын
@@BunyipDude - That's why the military went to three round burst for infantry rifles. Soldiers panic and end up not hitting anything when they're just acting on spray and pray, but when they forced to react and let go of the trigger and re-aim the weapon, they're much more effective.

@@mdemers767 Heck, I was in peacetime Marine Corps in the 80s, and that was true for us, and this was during training when there was no war. With the A1 M16 that had full auto we just emptied the magazine, but were much more coordinated when the A2 came out with the 3 round burst.
@BunyipDude
@BunyipDude 2 жыл бұрын
@@mdemers767 Yeah, although the 3-round burst feature turned out to be a waste as well (in practice: infantry personnel were discouraged from ever using it, and it caused severe trigger creep affecting accuracy). I just retired in 2018 after 32 years as an Engineer with a large American defense contractor and it is one of the most stressful jobs on the planet; as I used to tell people, they expect near super human dedication and results but in return they pay you a small boatload of money. When I was in my 20's and 30's and into my 40's I used to work an all nighter once a week (i.e. 7am to 7am, then an 8 hour shift, so ~32 hrs) then come back the next day and work a typical 10 or 12 hour day just to make sure I was working harder then anyone else and would get outstanding performance evaluations. By the time I reached age 59 I was pretty used up both physically and mentally but I had a seven figure portfolio and a pension coming so I stepped away early...I almost cracked a few times but managed to keep my marriage intact and things worked out well (a recently retired Ph.D. Aerospace Engineer who worked for a large American defense contractor's Missile Systems and Aero company.

During this era of movie making (and before) so many great movies were made regularly, because it was the norm to do so. Regardless of genre (whether horror, drama, comedy, parody, campy, mystery- WHATEVER), low budget or big budget, countless classics were made for the big screen and small screen.
