The U.S. Military would play one of the biggest roles in the post-nuclear world of Fallout, sometimes passively, sometime active. In this video we'll go through all the most notable examples.

Same just imagine all the possible factions that could be made from the remnants of people from military bases maybe there could be a possible faction comprised of multiple military bases that were left behind by the enclave to die but instead came together to survive establishing their own government maybe calling themselves the “United remains of *insert state here*” yet they’d be far from one another and could have their own political differences from isolation and sometimes get on the brink of war with each other but never follow with it knowing how much power they have and how destructive and costly it would be on them and the locals

I notice some of the scorched in 76 have Air Force uniforms along with some green beret outfits among other military uniforms it's the code carriers mainly have the uniforms. I'm assuming the only Air Force presents left would be from satellite relays or the Army Air core which mainly operate helicopters. I also think the remaining Navy personnel were around the oil rig which might explain why we don't hear much about them they assimilated into the Enclave.
@TheOmegaInitiative
@TheOmegaInitiative 3 жыл бұрын
I'll be covering what I think happened to navy and military high command soon. I didn't cover them in this video because it's meant to be just the lore of what happened, not theorizing. As for the scorched, I really don't have an answer about them, they're probably the survivors from the nuclear silos, but why they're still wearing the codes obviously doesn't make sense, but it also means they must have been part of an active unit at least past 2084 because they're infected with the scorched plague while still wearing their uniforms.

In Appalachia those guys were the personnel responsible for the codes when time came to launch.

@@TheOmegaInitiative Fallout 2 mentioned that one of the west coast fleets joined with the oil rig. Fallout 4 Far Habor also mentions via terminals a submarine captain being chastized post-war, and the dude chastising him appears to be a local East Coast Fleet Admiral talking about linking up with the command or something along those lines. As for the Brotherhood, Fallout 3 mentions the Chicago Brotherhood from tactics by name once and said that they split off from the Brotherhood and went radio silent. Fallout 4 mentions the airfleet that crashed to become the Chicago Brotherhood on the Prydwen. Here is some proof of my claims. While Bethesda has made tactics noncanon, (I mean, it had hairy deathclaws; I honestly understand,) they also directly mention the Midwest Brotherhood in Fallout 3, "There's also a small detachment in Chicago, but they're off the radar. Gone rogue. Long story." -Scribe Rothman. In Fallout 4 Lancer-Captain Kells seemingly makes a reference to the Midwest, stating that the Prydwen is the first airship commissioned since the west having a fleet of smaller ships a long time ago. "There were less advanced versions of this ship built on the West Coast a long time ago. Historical records about their current status are in dispute, but we're fairly certain that they were destroyed." -Captain Kells. Considering they crashed to become the Chicago Chapter, it makes sense.

I think the armed forces as a remnant are woefully underutilized potential. The US army was had a heavy presence in the USA for obvious reasons; they suppressed riots, they recruited and trained in the US and obviously because they are American soldiers in America. But who else would be more prepared to survive? Who else had access to shelters not messed around with by a shady corporation? Who else would have access to the weapons, the armor, the established command structure, the food, the fortifications, the vehicles etc. to survive in the wasteland? We see these raider groups pop up quickly, small groups of no more than a hundred members of untrained, poorly equipped savage junkies, these guys survive, but not more factions of the armed forces? They could have protected thousands of troops in one place at one time. I don't know, I get it's something that's already been done, but realistically who else would be better off in the wasteland

My friends and I have actually been spitballing ideas about this and ended up coming up with our own faction as a result: the Liberators, survivors, descendants and remnants of the actual United States Military from before the Great War. They realized quickly that any attempt to maintain order during a possible nuclear attack has a very slim chance of success, especially given their own distrust of the various corporations after the flaws in the T-45 Power Armor became apparent during the Liberation of Alaska. They established hidden bunkers, supply depots and fortifications across America, as well as reclaiming a number of Prewar military installations, such as the West Point Academy and both the Norfolk and Newport News Naval Yards, before and immediately after the war, with the purpose of rebuilding the American Dream for everyone. They've even been known to accept ghouls, super mutants and intelligent deathclaws into their ranks. Currently me and my friends are thinking on making a mod for Fallout 4 that will introduce the Liberators, who apart from setting up some small Army and Marine Corps outposts in and around Boston, also have both an aircraft carrier and a battleship that drop anchor in the harbor and act as the Liberators' main hub of operations in Boston.

2:44 Quick note as to why the Air Force seems to have disappeared: In the Fallout games, Strategic Air Command still existed. Which meant that massive bomber fleets would be on standby and also take off with nuclear weapons to bomb targets. We had this in our world from 1947 to 1992, with the collapse of the Soviet Union. And you see "Strategic Air Command" supply aircraft in Fallout 76. Meaning that most of the combat assets would be flying over to bomb China, and the fighters and air defense personnel would be fighting to stop Chinese bombers (and would likely be targeted by ICBMs and die anyways).

Technically speaking military robots also represent remnants of the military. Captain Ironsides programming seems to indicate that, while robots are at the bottom of the chain of command, they are still in the chain of command. Though most robots, being unable to carry out their programming, seem to have gone robo-insane. Ironsides saving himself from insanity by re-interpreting his programming. Militarized post war mercenary groups also represent possible military remnants, such as the Gunners in Fallout 4 or maybe even Talon Company from 3. There's also the "Naval Research Institute" which might be the only evidence of Navy survivors. While its exact nature is never made clear if the NRI is just Fallouts version of the Naval Research Laboratory then Rivet City Security could be descendants of the Navy. Also in Fallout 3 the tattered remains of combat armour seen on feral ghoul roamers is evidence of the fate of most soldiers in DC. Dialog in Fallout 4 actually implies that most cities are dangerous because a huge portion of the population pre-war were ghoulish and went feral, resulting in their seemingly endless numbers. That would also explain why Vegas has so few ferals since it was never bombed directly.

90% killed by nukes. The other 10% just fell into various groups like the Hellcats or joined post war communities. Brotherhood of Steel in Appalachia probably scooped up a good number of the survivors. Enclave wasn't really recruiting all that much. It's entirely possible there was also a second quieter war between Chinese sleeper cells and anybody trying to revive the US Government. Like the actual US government, not the Enclave.

I think with what happened, the fact the National guard even was able to mobilize at all was a pretty good sign. however i think what is likely is the NG around major cities and impact sites fell apart rather quickly however the NG in less impacted areas would have found themselves cut off from the static caused by fallout eventually being either killed via exposure, starvation or dying to proto raider tribes. As for the gunners, i get the feeling they are like the Minutemen, people pulling from history to make themselves seem more powerful, while the MM portrayed themselves as a peoples militia, the gunners took on the myths of the US army, after all when you see old world signs everywhere of these people draped in combat armour with an entire nation fuelling it's war efforts with entire almost (Wastelander) city sized areas dedicated to, training, supplying and glorifying them, just mimicking them could provide a advantage

The difference between the Minutemen and the Gunners is that the Gunners are the only faction in the Commonwealth that fields large numbers of pre-war military robots. For the sake of clarity, the Army-Air Force divide of the US had its beginnings in 1945, and finalized in the 1966. Part of the deal was that the Army would get the new Helicopter technology that was coming out at the time, and the Air Force would get most of, if not nearly all, the fixed wing. There are a couple exceptions to this rule, but only for extremely small cases that both administrative sections agreed with (spec ops air force gets a couple blackhawks, and the Army gets to play with A-10's occasionally)

If you look at the vertibirds in Fallout76, you'll see that they are labeled as Strategic Air Command assets. SAC was Cold War US Air Force Major Command (some would say THE Major Command) based at Offutt AFB antecedent to today's US Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM). The implication is that the push to "Jointness" within the US Armed Services and its precipitating 1986 Goldwater-Nichols Act did not occur in the Fallout timeline. This would imply considerable autonomy and lack of integration among the Armed Services, which reflects what we seem to see in the games. There seem to be minimal multi-service operations before the war, implying even more well-intended interservice rivalry and dysfunctionality than in the present day. This seems in keeping with Fallout's standing dark and cynical lens, which every day I keep thinking is an increasingly realistic characterization of the present day USG. The vast majority of Service members are, however, duty-oriented and believe in their mission and country. The question is, do their leaders, or have they been captured by an Enclave-like entity? Also to consider, how much penetration does the PRC have within the US Military establishment?

I believe only the vertibirds that escort cargobots are SAC vertibirds. I can't say much for multi-service exercises, but off the top of my head I do know that what became the Brotherhood in 76 was an Army Ranger unit and a Marine unit that were participating in war games.

There is the coast guard pier in fallout 4 but that’s the only coast guard we see in the games that I know of. I would assume the vast majority of coast guard assets would be sent to the west coast because in the US military parts of the coast guard are merged into the Navy during times of war. I would love to see that explored if we ever see another west coast fallout game. Even a huge boneyard of wrecked ships could be pretty cool.

When I imagine how the US military would be in Fallout post war, I imagine that it would be like the new Planet of the apes trilogy. The military still exists, but they're tiny compared to what it was before. High command is now located in some random base while companies and battalions of soldiers try to find other survivors and help them through, however ever changing circumstances leads to different commanders taking different courses of action from what command wants and even mutiny, thus leading to in fighting and the eventual final destruction of America's armed forces. At least, that's how I think of it.

You ask what happened with the US army? The answer is: raiders. You may not want to believe it but that is the nature of men, once in power you want to remain in power, and since in the apocalypse the old institutions hold no authority, they became an authority of their own. If you watched "Mad Max"2 you'll notice that many of the raiders in it were ex cops. The director of that movie knew human nature well.

Sort of a related note, but this reminds me of something I heard from an Air Force Missilier who served in a silo during the cold war. He said if they got the "go code" to launch, afterwards he and his deputy intended to go outside, have a last smoke and a drink while sitting down to watch the show after all the missiles were away. Their reasoning was the silo had a couple weeks worth of supplies, not enough to survive long term, and neither of them fancied waiting to starve to death down there. Bearing in mind that every time they came on duty, they drew lots to see who would have to climb down to unstick the missiles' fuel valves if they malfunctioned during the launch, should the call come, to stop them blowing up in the tubes. Just one thing, the rocket engines will start as soon as you unstick the valves, so it's a one-way trip.

I can't remember, but is there any specific mention of the USAF in fallout lore? I remember that the divergence point for the fallout universe from our own was around WWII. the USAF became it's own branch a little after WWII. If there's no mention of the USAF in the lore, that might be because it never became it's own branch, and remained part of the Army.

@The Administrator Well, if there's any mention of USAF, that means divergence occurred AFTER 18 September, 1947.

@The Administrator The only issue i really have with your timeframe, is that FDR is the last President, mentioned in the lore, that shares commonality with our timeline. FDR, in our timeline, left office in April of 1945. One of the defining divergence events, was the invention of the Integrated Circuit. It happened in our timeline, but didn't happen in the Fallout timeline.. the first IC was created in 1958. so, i would suggest a timeframe between 1948, and 1958. There is no mention of the Korean war in the lore...at least none that i can find. Additionally, while there is a snippet of a speech in the intro for fallout tactics, about the war in vietnam, i don't think that conflict happened as it did in our timeline, so i'm not going to count it as a common event. So, again, i'm thinking divergence occurred somewhere between 1948, and 1958.

@The Administrator ::shrug:: i've been combing through the lore, and like i said, there's absolutely NO mention of the korean war, and only a snippet of a speech referencing the vietnam war, in the intro to Fallout: Tactics....which... is that game even canon? i can't remember. If tactics isn't canon, then we can cross 'nam off the list of common events too...which would narrow things down a bit more. We do know the cold war happened, and it was different from how it happened in reality, insofar as involved parties, and duration.

I feel like a lot of 60s and cold war tech, apart from computer related stuff, would be possible in the fallout universe. Maybe it would take longer to develop due to less of a focus on computer tech, but it weirds me out that the lore sort of implies that the US utilized Shermans way longer due to the fact they swapped to the m26 pershing post war, or the fact the p-80 was utilize much longer when planes like the f-86 sabre only came out five years post the war. It would make sense if the pentomic army concept was continued in this universe, with vehicles like the M113, Hueys, M60 pattons, being utilized but with less advanced computer components involved. I can also see aircraft like the f-100 super sabre, f-104 starfighters, and f-4 phantoms still being made around the same time, minus rader and infared missle tech. Plus, other concepts planes and equipment we didn't make in our time might make more sense in the fallout universe. Though, I would chalk up most of this lack on info about us tech between ww2 and the sino-american war to very little representation of the marines, navy, and air force, alongside very little info about the early parts of the sino-american war due to the fact that the US national guard would likely utilize a large amount of old equipment, sinc everything vaguely useful would have been taken out of stockpile to throw at the chinese.

Maybe Ex. Soldiers Surivived the Great War. It's likely possible that same Military members stayed with there Company's or Platoons to help maintain order in there region. U.S. Soldiers are also trained in living off the land, and Radiation detection, as demonstrated by Randll Clark in Honest Hearts DLC for New Vegas. It's likely that some may have given up on maintaining order, and turn to mercenary work to provide for there group. But it's also likely that same Military members wanted to protect the defenseless from the still forming Raider Tribes. The few Military style Factions/Mercenary Company's I can think of is: The Gunners (FO4) Talon Company (FO3) The Minuteman (FO4) Brotherhood of Steel (Ya, I know it's obvious) Enclave (another obvious one) That's all I could think of. The reason I put the Minuteman up there is because they used the Military ranking system, and protect the people from outside threats. Which offen indicates of U.S. Army influence or Ex. Army formed.

I think it's likely that the U.S. Navy was more or less completely annihilated, at least the surface component. Battlegroups of surface ships are extremely vulnerable once nuclear weapons are in use, and the Soviet doctrine in the case of escalation was to throw enough nuclear torpedoes and cruise missiles at every U.S. carrier battlegroup to basically ensure their destruction. In the case of submarines, some of these may have survived the initial exchange, but again, they would've been #1 priority targets for whatever was left of the Chinese navy by that point, and it's likely that the fleets of the two respective superpowers would've kept fighting for days, weeks, or possibly even years after the world-ending nuclear exchange - either because they didn't know their home countries had been destroyed, or because they had nothing left to live for except vengeance.
