Dr. Françoise Wilhelmi de Toledo, our Director of Fasting Research and Medicine sums up in this video the recently published Fatty Liver and Fasting Study (published in Nutrients 2019, 11, 2601.
www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/11/11/...)
-- Periodic fasting according to the Buchinger Wilhelmi programme reduces fat accumulation in the liver (fatty liver) and can thus prevent liver cirrhosis --
The pathological accumulation of fat in the liver and is a major cause of a worldwide increase in chronic liver disease and can lead to cirrhosis. Periodic fasting over 8.5 days on average lowers the fatty liver index (FLI), a risk parameter for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. A fatty liver significantly promotes the development of type 2 diabetes and is exacerbated by overeating and lack of exercise.
A study entitled “Effects of Periodic Fasting on Fatty Liver Index - A Prospective Observational Study” published in the journal Nutrients in October surveyed 697 people who fasted at the Clinic Buchinger Wilhelmi on Lake Constance. Among the participants were 38 subjects with
type 2 diabetes. At the beginning of the study, a fatty liver was diagnosed in 264 cases: the FLI was ≥ 60, indicating the presence of a fatty liver; 160 were at the permitted limit.
The study demonstrated the following:
• Periodic fasting in this study significantly reduced the FLI by 14.02 ± 11.67 points, with diabetic subjects benefiting even more (-19.15 ± 11.0 points).
• Almost half of the patients assigned to the highest risk category (FLI ≥ 60) were able to switch to a lower-risk category.
• Significant weight loss of 4.37 ± 2.42 kg and an abdominal circumference reduction of 5.39 ± 3.27 cm were also documented in all patients. Subjects exhibited lower blood glucose and HbA1c levels, and their liver enzymes and blood lipids also decreased.
• Fasting over a longer period, higher weight loss and a greater reduction in abdominal circumference improved the FLI considerably. In addition, male patients who initially had higher FLI, GOT (an important liver enzyme) and cholesterol levels benefited particularly from fasting.
• A calculation model showed that each additional day fasting increases the chance of transforming a manifest fatty liver into a lower risk category by 40 %.

Periodic fasting according to the Buchinger Wilhelmi programme took place in an environment that provided medical care, rest and mindfulness, and was well tolerated in the study. It consists of a daily average intake of 250 kcal of organic fruit juices and broths. The participants rarely felt hungry, and the results clearly show that periodic fasting reduces a fatty liver in diabetic and non-diabetic patients.

Insulin resistance = visceral fat in your organs and muscles. And fasting treats that. Not only you don't have to worry about health problems, but your metabolism is faster and you can process carbs with ease without getting fatter. That's why I love fasting. I don't need to sit on a keto diet all my life, I just need to become insulin sensitive and that's about it.

I am living the 4/3 lifestyle. I eat four days a week and fast 36 to 38 hours on avg three days a week. I stop eating around 7 on Sunday and resume eating or my first meal at around 9 or 10 am on Tuesday for example. I drink water, sparkling water and coffee with splenda on fast days. On eat days I just eat what I want. I try to stay healthy but I do what I want. I also tend to eat less than I used to. Some key factors. Fasting days are not a big deal anymore. I have no more food guilt which is huge. I don't have to portion size meal plan or prep. My skin is clear I think clear now and my weight is approaching weight from my twenties. If a BDay comes up or an event I just go and enjoy (no guilt) if I go on vacation I just enjoy ( no guilt ). I'm reversing age issues at 55. I jump rope and started boxing again. I lost 50 lbs and some left to go but it will and life is sooooo much better now

I don't believe you can reverse diabetes. I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic and if I don't eat carbs I don't need insulin. If I do, I do. Simple. If you occasionally cheat with carbs you can get away with it. No big deal. The problems caused by diabetes are caused long-term. Long-term carbohydrate consumption.

@@terrifictomm There's a difference between Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 cannot be reversed. Type 2 is caused by insulin resistance, and insulin resistance can be reversed with diet. It takes long term commitment.

Please carry on fasting if you are feeling great. It is not easy to start a longer fast, if u have excess weight, there are still many meals of bf lunch n dinner hanging in our body😎 I tried for many times n it always ended with 24 hours due to the fatal attraction of food! I am on day 2 finally now. Just remember to have pink himilayan salt n potassium n magnesium in case of cramps. Update if u manage to break 2 digit this round. It is not hunger that break our fast but many other reasons for me 😁

Think I'll try fasting too like you did as you've come so far in only three months so definitely doing something right. All the best with your continued good health, wish me luck x

Im 35 pounds over weight. I remember fasting for one week a few years ago, eating once a day only- picked an hour of the day that I can eat (5pm), basically ate everything I wanted for that one hour and then wait 24 hours to eat again during that same hour the next day. In that one week my body rapidly changed, more energy, lost weight, and actually slept well too....and yes the first day and second were brutal, but there after it became easy. I guess this is the only way, bc the DR has me on a ton of medication, and that scares me.

Yes fasting works for/against fatty liver! And intermittend fasting for a longer period works as good for fatty liver as a prolonged fasting. So I think what someone prefers is his type, his personal preference, isn't it? Maybe there are much other great benefits from prolonged fasting. Would be interessting to hear about from you. I started on the "health" quest in 1973, starting with veganism for a solid 10 years. I mean serious vegan. Made all of my own food, juices seed cheeses wheat grass ect.. With all the vegan supplements, spent thousands of dollars over the years. started having health problems, In short, I would call it accelerated aging. Added fish and chicken, no red meat. but stayed plant based, I was gaining an average of 2 pound a year. intermittent fasting on carnivore, Went from 240 lbs to 185 . To many health benefits to mention, mental, physical, and spiritual. In the 70s and 80s never thought I would be eating this way. lol..

He's absolutely correct. We have an epidemic in the US of fatty liver disease. The culprit is fructose. Specifically High Fructose Corn Syrup. Become a label reader. Reject commercially prepared foods that contain HFCS and seed oils. That includes soy bean oil, btw. Avoid over the counter pain medication and alcohol as well, and your liver will begin to repair itself. The liver is a resilient organ, given half a chance.

I started intermediate fasting July31, 2020 @ 285lbs 6'1", I weigh myself once a week usually on a Monday. Sept 7th I weighed 257lbs. My year end goal is to be 220lbs at 50th birthday. I may shoot for 205 next year as it's what I weighed a long time a go out of the military and I feel its my ideal body weight. I do the 16/8 but often its more like 18/6, 10pm to 2pm is my fasting time (eating window is 2pm to 10pm). I work nights a lot so I'm just not eating at work and go straight to bed when I get home. I've cut out carbs (breads and white potatoes, very little fruit), unsweet almond milk in oatmeal (use cinnamon, honey, walnuts) maybe once a week. Lots of salads with (cheese, boiled egg, almonds, carrots, bits, balsamic vinegar), sweet potatoes, chicken, steak, broccoli, cabbage, stew (without potatoes), cheese, eggs, bacon. Pretty much anything no carb. I drink only water, black coffee, unsweet tea. The second week in I started drinking apple cider vinegar before bed and when I get up also. Recipe:1 cup of water,1 table spoon of acv, 1 table spoon of lemon juice. Use a straw and drink it toward the back of your mouth so the acids don't go over your teeth and hurt your enamel. I walk a couple days a week and do pushups, planks, leg lifts most days. The weight is just falling off, I'm never going back to my old unhealthy lifestyle.

Fatty Liver diagnosed here, March 31, 2017. This disease change me a lot. I eat foods in minimal amount, no satisafcation at all. 😔 😣 I am a skinny man not fat. I became more skinny, I hate it so much. I am not happy. I made my diet for a long run from April 2017 to December 2019. I had ultrasounds for a couple of times and bloodtests at the same time. From fatty liver in (April 2017) it downgraded to mild fatty liver (August 2018) and became normal (February and August 2019). Its so hard for me. I have to control the food I eat. I had anxieties, stress and worries. I am glad that I reversed it but during the 2020 lockdown days, evrything has changed. I was not able to maintain the results. Its been a year since I haven't my ultrasound and blood tests. Last March 2021, I undergone uktrasound again and bloodtest. Unfortunately, mild fatty liver again after 1 year and 6 months. My blood levels is a little bit higher from the normal range. I struggle to start up again.

Dr. Wilhelmi de Toledo is awesome but I often wonder why the human populace waits thousands of years later to discover by science what Scripture already insisted upon thousands of years earlier? For instance, 2,700 years ago, the holy prophet, Isaiah, already told us that, by fasting, "thine health shall spring forth speedily" (Isaiah 58:8). There you have it! - the prophet insisted fasting will not only restore you to health but will do so quickly. Isaiah also vouched for the value of Black Seed oil. How huge is that? Scripture light years ahead of science . . . again!

In your prophetic tome, what is the chapter and verse that warns against potentially fatal refeeding syndrome? _When too much food or liquid nutrition supplement is eaten during the initial four to seven days following a malnutrition event, the production of glycogen, fat and protein in cells may cause low serum (blood) concentrations of potassium, magnesium and phosphorus. Cardiac, pulmonary and neurological symptoms can be signs of refeeding syndrome. The low serum minerals, if severe enough, can be fatal._ I lifted that from the scriptural document known as Wikipedia.

Of course you bloody can. And that's how you'll treat your diabetes like millions of others. Diabetes type 2 is a disease of too much insulin from insulin resistance. And insulin resistance is too much fat in your organs. The cure? Fucking fasting obviously. Because the very first thing your body will do is start using fat in your organs for fuel in the absence of glucose and glycogen.

Its not a case of over eating fructose. Fructose is just toxic. Fructose goes to the liver as opposed to Glucose it moves into the circulation resulting in the production of Insulin. It's the massive intake of Fructose that results in Insulin resistant and since its direct movement into the liver and fat cells results in decreased productions of various compounds in the liver. The end result is Oxadative stress in the cells and increase in Fat in the liver.

What are the hours required to fast in the study? It’ says periodic fasting for an average of 8.5 days - can someone please tell me what periodic fasting means?

Hello Ansa Rana! I am happy to answer your question. Periodic fasting means a prolonged and severely calorie-restricted fasting period lasting up to several weeks. In most cases it is practiced only a limited number of times per year. This is in contrast to intermittent fasting or time restricted eating where you go without food only for hours, like the 16:8; and you can practice it every day.

My doctor said that hair lost on keto or fasting happens when you are low in potassium. Eat more avocado. And eggs have 3 a day to get enough vitamins A and omega 3. Good luck.

I'm listening to all.their videos . I'm no expert but I think it would help. They said that in a long fast the liver reduces its size by half and then regenerates when you eat again.
