►Replacing the front brake pads and rotors of your MQB chassis Volkswagen Tiguan is essentially the same process as the Mk7 Golf R and GTI with the performance pack brakes. If your brake pads or rotors are visually worn past their usable life, if your pad wear sensor has tripped a warning message on the instrument cluster, or if the front of your car is shaking under braking, it's time to replace these components.
Replacement of the MQB-based VW Tiguan brakes couldn't be more straightforward and is a job that nearly anyone can tackle in their garage or driveway at home. It requires minimal special tools, all of which are outlined in the intro of this video.
Follow along as Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIY'er walks us through the step-by-step process of replacing the front brake pads and rotors on a VW Tiguan SE R-Line.

Amateur mechanic here but I've done a few brake jobs. Just a reminder you may have missed at the end. After youre finished you're job, dont forget to get in the car and pump the brake pedal a few times to get pressure back in your caliper piston. Just saves the shock of your foot going to the floor the first time you try to stop. Amazing video though. The best instructional videos I have seen. The fact that you tell us all the tools we need is worth its weight in gold

Great tip!! From my experience, I always felt it's best to "bleed" the system" while your at it as well. Especially, after a certain amount of time in the system. But Kudos!

Awesome video, the 21mm bolts on the caliper carrier were extremely tough to remove on my 2019 until we realized turning the wheel would allow space for an impact wrench lol, hope this helps other who lack experience as I do.

Thanks for the video, I've done brakes on all my cars but it is always nice to see it done once before to make sure there are no extra bells and whistles to deal with. I got this excat set of calipers and brake pads from FCP Euro thanks to your advice and quick walkthrough. Excited to give my new to me Tiguan some fresh fluids and brakes, and to start to get familiar with the mechanics this car.

Best informed video! Really thank you for information about taking the brake fluid off. Now I will open it and make sure no pressure will be in the brake system! I was wondering if I should do that? But I wasn't sure if it was okay or not. Because I did that twice without opening anything! Compressed the pistons on 2 cars and then was wondering why is it stopping so weird? Like when you press brakes it would press not even across the rotor so it would press hard and a little less hard at the same amount of pressure used with my foot!

Should you open the brake reservoir slightly just to avoid over pressurizing the system?
@19krpm
@19krpm Жыл бұрын
I open the bleed screw when I compress the piston back into the caliper. That way you avoid pushing old fluid back into the reservoir. On a lot of single piston vehicles, I open the bleeder and use an old beat up flat blade in the notch of the caliper to pry against the old rotor/pads to compress it back in before I take anything apart.

@@19krpm thank you - do you need to fully bleed if you do this or are you kind of bleeding via this process?

nothin like shovin dirt out of the piston chamber back up through your abs n hose , crack that bleeder n use a line lock . u can do a lot of damage to an abs if u dont . even if there is not dirt those one way diaphrams can be damaged in the abs .... big bucks not to mention ur brake light could come on n stay on .

I used this video to replace my front disc and pads on my 2017 Tuguan. I replaced my passenger side first where there was no brake sensor on the pads. So I removed the wire on the new pad. However, there was a brake senor on the driver side. The brakes work great but there's an error message on the dash when I start up.
@mike7605
@mike7605 10 ай бұрын
What does the error message say? And have you cleared it?
@gregorykleiman2137
@gregorykleiman2137 10 ай бұрын
What you can do is take the wire you cut off and open it up and joing the two wires inside together to make it closed circuit and then put it on the connecter of the wheel. This will remove the error the next time the engine is turned on. Then always remember to check your brake pads yourself every so often. The good old way.

Love the diy. Is there any break in instructions? To seat the pads or anything ?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate that Brandon! Usually, the process is pretty standard (5 moderate to aggressive stops from 40 mph down to 10 mph in rapid succession without letting the brakes cool and do not come to a complete stop-then do 5 moderate stops from 35 mph to 5 mph in rapid succession without letting the brakes cool, followed by a cool down drive without coming to a complete stop). Some pad manufacturers will include a break-in procedure with their pads as well should there be anything specific.

Hi, do you have any idea if the car will tell you when it’s time for the break pads to be changed? When I look at my break pads I can’t see anything they look very low as if the calliper is touching the disc but have not had any warning lights come up in dash. I have a Tiguan R line 2019

So I just did this exact service following your direction using power stop evolution front pads and they sit in the carrier loose. They look to be almost a 1/4 short and move up and down and when you change directions they click! Power stop just sent me new pads but same thing has happened. Any advice is appreciated!
@KevinJanowiak
@KevinJanowiak Жыл бұрын
Same with Raybestos Front Pads (EHT1633A). They are too short and click-clunk like crazy. It happens because the Tiguan doesn't have anti-rattle clips in place to combat the radial movement and I suspect aftermarket pads are shorter than OEM making this appear worse.
@Bayne78
@Bayne78 9 ай бұрын
HI, ive got a 2019 Rline, make brakes rattle of small bumps and imperfections, but not when braking is applied Dealership says it is due to non genuine pads being fitted prior to my ownership, something about OEM having shims. I find it hard to believe this would be the case with all aftermarket pads, but could the pads fitted not have the locating ears, so the are not fitted tight?
@garyallman3039
@garyallman3039 9 ай бұрын
On the B5 Passat, at least one brand of aftermarket pad (the one I used!) had that problem. On that one, the ears on the pads were a tiny bit shorter than stock pads. The fix was to take a center punch and a hammer, and hit the ear really close to the end. That small indentation would push the end out a tiny bit, and the rattle didn't happen.

Why bother removing the caliper from the caliper bracket unless you want to re grease the slide pins? I don't think you regreased here. The caliper can just come off as complete unit and there is room to get the new pads in.
