CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Duke (Johnny Depp) takes too much Adrenochrome while Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) gets rid of Lucy.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King) directed this colorful, stylized, pseudo-psychedelic $21-million adaptation of the 1971 Hunter S. Thompson classic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey into the Heart of the American Dream, about stoned sportswriter Raoul Duke, Thompson's alter ego, on a wild drug-crazed road trip, a paranoid plummet into the belly of the beast, with his pal, lawyer Oscar Zeta Acosta. Originally serialized in Rolling Stone (November 1971), the book catapulted Thompson headfirst toward the Kerouac-Mailer-Capote pantheon and jump-started the entire movement of "gonzo journalism." Carrying a suitcase of drugs, Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp with shaved pate) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro) drive a red convertible across the Mojave from L.A. to Vegas, where Duke has an assignment to cover the Mint 400 desert motorcycle race. As the drugs kick in, Duke ventures into voiceover, filling in the blank spots and narrative gaps. "This is not a good town for psychedelic drugs," says Duke, but even so, they consume vast quantities, eventually escalating to ether. Duke notes that with ether "you can actually watch yourself behaving this terrible way, but you can't control it." The two trash their hotel room, and Gonzo goes back to L.A. Thinking the hotel room holocaust will lead to an arrest, Duke begins a drive back to L.A., but after an odd encounter with a highway patrolman (Gary Busey) and a telephone conversation with Gonzo, he returns to Vegas to cover the District Attorney Convention on Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs in the glitzy Flamingo Hotel. This time the drugged-out duo trash their Flamingo room. The crazed carnival atmosphere segues into a carney casino, Bazooko's Circus, where a barker (Penn Jillette) spiels amid aerialists, clowns, and a rotating carousel bar. Gonzo worries over runaway teen Lucy (Christina Ricci), who paints portraits of Barbra Streisand. Soon the hallucinations begin: Duke sees Gonzo transmogrify into a demon with breasts on its back, and an acid vision of a Vegas bar features large legit lounge lizards (courtesy of monster makeup man Rob Bottin). Flashbacks depicting Duke's intro to the drug scene jump back to love-Haight relationships in San Francisco's Summer of Love. Cameos and guest stars include Mark Harmon, Cameron Diaz, Flea, Lyle Lovett, Harry Dean Stanton, Ellen Barkin, Tobey Maguire, and Hunter S. Thompson himself. The film features a Geffen Records soundtrack mixing rock of the period with Vegas lounge tunes. Over the years, various script adaptations came and went as did numerous talents; people connected with past efforts to film Thompson's book include Martin Scorsese, Jack Nicholson, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, and writer-director Alex Cox. Shown in competition at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.

i disagree once i did acid and shrooms enough i got to where i could drive and act perfectly normal, except i was genuinely interested in people i met at parties or just around and found it easy to make friends. after tripping a shit load of times i started just getting anxiety so i stopped. anyway my point is that even though it wasnt special once you got to the "game" thing you mentioned, it stayed hella fun.

Does anyone have a link to the 10 minute "adrenochrome documentary" video? I know 2 channels had it but you couldn't search for it unless you had a link. Was it finally taken down? Videos about fauci patenting covid in 1999 are being deleted this week. Well entire news channels that hosted the scientists from CDC. So wondering if that one too. Was one of the best ones.

I think it depends on your relationship with the sound of a phone ringing. Do you dislike being called unexpectedly while not tripping? I have neutral feelings towards it, if it's a family member I dread answering and usually don't, and if it's a friend calling, I become ecstatic with joy. :)

@@isaiahiiv9954 Nope you’re right, having an open mind is fine. But the belief that we’re ruled by reptilians is insane, and the idea comes from the film They Live, where aliens disguised themselves to not be recognised by humans, but the main character ends up with a pair of sunglasses that expose them to anyone who wears the glasses. It’s a great film, and you’ll see what the whole idea is once you look into the film or watch it. Lots of these conspiracies are born from media. Like the whole higher ups eating babies thing, that’s from a game called Mystery Of The Druids, where these government officials partake in consuming human flesh because it gives them supernatural powers. These pieces of media being majorly obscure has helped solidify the conspiracies as truth, because the media that the conspiracies use as a template are fairly unknown it creates less chance of there being credible evidence against it (even though there’s plenty)

this movie is very overlooked, that's what makes it a cult classic, only people who have messed with psychedelics get the way this movie functions with the storyline that takes us nowhere, and that is what drugs do too, take us nowhere even though we think they do but as you can see the excess of drugs and las vegas just turns you into a psychopath like Dr. Gonzo or a strange peculiar fellow like Duke, the movie is more about situations and how drugs alter perception of how we see the world, brilliant film, this scene is great because Gonzo is pretending to be attacked on the phone and fabricating a false story to Lucy while in the same exact shot we see Duke starting to feel the effects of the adrenochrome in the foreground, the fact that Duke is not focusing on Gonzo at all while he's in the background freaking out is what makes the scene pure genius

I love how Johnny/Hunter isn't even fucking phased by the chaos going on in the background. He even looks at him twice and is just like "Yeah... well I guess this is happening, back to tripping the fuck out!" Lmfao! Johnny Depp almost plays a better Hunter S. Thompson then the actual person. If you watch the real Hunter's interviews, you start to realize how good of a job Johnny actually did because the resemblance in his demeanor and speaking style is almost creepy its so accurate.

@@GQFJB you can always spot someone who jumped on the band wagon late versus someone who was there when this was first talked about. The concept now was just taken from this book, the original story, while similar was far different. Also what my original point was is that its hardly something new to talk about, or ballsy. The book has it in there very casually, and people who only recently just heard about it take it as a personal insult without knowing this book named the thing that is just becoming slightly more talked about.

Just gonna leave this here for the dumbasses that think there’s a huge ring of pedophiles high on adrenachrome. 1. It doesn’t have any effects that’s a myth that was debunked. 2. It can and has been synthesised in labs for years now so it 100% wouldn’t be coming from humans. 3. It doesn’t make you look younger as it’s just a form of adrenaline and it’s derivative carbazochrome is a medication still used today as a hemostatic agent sold under the brand name Toxivenol among others.

It’s weird how people won’t trust scientists with actual degrees yet have absolutely no doubt that the info on Facebook and pseudo science websites that’s been written by flat earthers and anti vaxxers with 0 credible sources and no academic achievements is legit. These are the same type of people that would have been spreading doomsday theories thousands of years ago.

I love how the movie emulates what drugs Dr Gonzo and Raoul Duke are on, the environment is strange and vibrant even when they're somewhat sober - but even in this scene when the Doctor is pretending to be beaten up right when the adrenachrome is working it's magic on Raoul, everything for a short moment goes really twisted and surreal. If you've watched this movie fucked off drugs you can pretty much understand the experience, but even if you haven't it does express the experience quite well.
