Welcome to my first episode! In this installment I retire from my job and leave everything behind to search for a sailboat to cruise the seven seas with. See where I end up!
Here is a link to my sailing trip with Rob where we sailed 1200 nautical miles down the east coast from Haverstraw New York to West Palm Beach Florida.

Thanks for watching!

Hang in There...!! The Tears, I Wasn't Ready for That. You're Going to LOVE Living at Sea. The Best Advice I Can Give is, To Learn About Your Entire Boat Systems. Learn Everything. Wiring, Electronics, How to Fiberglass, and That Engine You Bought. Yes, I Watched That Engine Install Two Videos. I Hope Everything Goes Well! You'll Be Fine! I'm Curious How You Handle the Mizzen Sail. Not Many Boats Have a Mizzen Sail, and Once You Get to Know It, You'll Be a Great Sailor!! Retired From Cosco. That's Really Cool.

Thanks for watching! It’s been a few years since buying the boat and I’ve put over 5000 nautical miles under the keel. Love the mizzen sail and the ketch rig in general. I fly all four sails often and the mizzen really helps balance the boat. Not sure if you’ve seen it already, but here’s a link to a short video where I raise the sails. The first one up is the mizzen. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJxmZbCl0p-lXZs.html

Hahaha…. It was quite the initiation alright! I did have to swim after my dinghy a while back as it got away from me while I was on shore. The wind was taking it out to sea, but fortunately I was able to run around the curved beach to get ahead of it and then swam out. At least the water was much warmer, lol.

Just found you on YT and watched your NY-FL trip with your friend. I am from Montreal and will get on the same trip to Florida should the border opens this fall. I saw you wearing a NBJS sweater, is this the kind of sailing you are envisioning? Should you cross over to the Caribbeans, I might see you next Spring. Cheers, Richard

Thank you so much! I appreciate the comments. I don’t think I’ll get that hard-core, but I love his drive and his cinematography is amazing. My friend that I sailed with wants me to go into the Caribbean as well. I think that would at least be a couple of years away as I hope to spend some time in the sea of Cortez and Pacific Mexico before heading further south.

Never sailed in my life, i cant stop watching these vids. picked out a few boats i want to look at. i know i'm jumping the gun, however i have seen people with no experience do the same. what is your advice?
@OnnoKok
@OnnoKok 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you so much for watching! First thing would be to go out and sail! Lol. Join a local sailing club or just talk to people and see if you can crew, etc. It’s going to be tough to choose a boat without knowing what type of sailing you like to do. Get out on the water and give it a go!
@RodFleming-World
@RodFleming-World 2 жыл бұрын
If I may, join a sailing dinghy club or even just buy one. Spend a season racing dinghies and you will learn so much about sailing. Transferring those skills to your eventual cruiser is trivial.

I'm very intrigued by the idea of sailing around the world . One of my favorite places is Hawaii so that would be high on my list but aside from mastering the technical know-how , I have concerns about the safety of being at sea. Not so much 100 miles or less off the eastern seaboard where the coast guard is readily available but perhaps outside of the vicinity of the US. What would happen if pirates decided they wanted to steal your boat and throw you over board ? How could you protect yourself from such people who would certainly out gun you ? Is such a thing a common occurrence ?
@OnnoKok
@OnnoKok 2 жыл бұрын
Well… for the most part, piracy are just thieves on water and the same kinds of precautions like on land should be taken. It takes a long time for the coast guard to get out that far and the pirates would be long gone anyways. Currently I would not be tempted to go in the Gulf of Aiden of course. I personally am not currently concerned except for maybe closer to Nicaragua. Best practice is to stay further off shore as they typically are using boats with limited range. Noonsite is a good website that information for specific areas

@@OnnoKok So do you think that most long distance boats carry heavy weaponry ?
@OnnoKok
@OnnoKok 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnmazza9432 no, I would say that would be extremely rare. They are illegal in most countries and could be confiscated and the owner fined and possibly jailed. Certainly not a good idea on an international trip.
