I love this topic! I think more stories need to consider what they want to say instead of just being entertaining for the sake of entertainment. Nothing wrong with the latter, but having a true meaning is generally why some stories stick with readers for years while others are enjoyed in the moment and forgotten about after a few months. Great video Nour!

Excellent ideas. I definitely try to find a theme that is special to me in some way to use in a story.

I find it easier to figure out the theme once I've finished the first draft or outline. That said, I usually approach themes like I would a hypothesis or statement for a thesis. "What would I like to discuss / explore with this book, setting or character?" and then I can get the ball rolling. I tend to be a bit of pantser, so I have to potter around a bit first.

My fiction is basically a Good vs Evil story, but not everything is black and white. For instance: • Main Protagonist wants Revenge against the murderer of his loved one, but he has to learn how to be his own good person. • Antagonist wants to enslave many people to perfect society. I make sure that some of my protagonists aren’t goody two shoes. In terms of antagonism, I choose which antagonist can be Pure Evil, and which antagonist doesn’t need to be.

I'm a pantser and when I start a story I might have an idea for a theme or some themes, or I might not have a clue but even when I start with some idea for a theme, more themes come at me as i'm writing it. Just, poof, there they are. Unexpected. And i'm often saying to myself "I didn't intend to dig up that trauma... i'm sorry characters" 😂
