Camilla doesn't seem to develop much, if at all, in her support conversation.
But is her stagnating character intentional? Does her blandness have a point? Is she actually, seriously crazy?

An interesting angle to look at things is that Selena, a woman with severe mother issues, is paired with Camilla, a woman with similarly extreme mother issues on the other side of the spectrum. Selena, over-loved by her perfect mother, became a distant daughter. Camilla, neglected by a distant woman, became an over-loving mother.

When you consider Peri's evaluation in Ghast's other video (having seen her mother killed before her very eyes), it almost makes you think that Peri would fit perfectly as one of Camilla's retainers or something to that effect

I'm sad that Camilla turned out the way she did She has one of the most interesting and complex backstories of the Fates cast, but it's rarely ever touched on during her supports She could have very well been one of the best characters in Fates if she had better development

Business Doge I kinda like the fact that she has no development. It is an interesting twist on the supports when normally a character would learn an important lesson or grow as a person. I feel it would have been more interesting to explore the past that turned her into the mess that she is instead of try to fix her

The problem is that her base personality is shit. We don't need character development if the character is already interesting. We love Indiana Jones, Tony Montana, Sheldon Cooper, Albus Dumbledore and Auron for who they are, not what they'll become. In fact, the later two provide an example of an easy way to keep the character interesting without changing them: _Have the change already happen, outside of the story._ *These characters don't change, yet our perception of them does.* They become something more than we initially saw them as. But at their core, they remain the same as when we first met them. I posted a huge comment a few minutes ago where I argued that we don't really need to change Camilla's personality at all, so long as the game acknowledges how flawed she is and makes an effort to explore it in detail. You should check it out if you have the time. Anyways, have a nice day. :)

I'm glad there's at least one guy out there who doesn't see Camilla as a shallow fanservice character. Like Peri, she's also a character that seriously needs help, but doesn't really get it. Now I think I understand what Selena meant in the DLC when she said "I've seen way worse than this, like an upset Lady Camilla..."

I still kinda do. It's like Ghast says; that's just her defining character trait. It's not exactly wrong, but it puts off a lot of people. To me at least, I'm glad that she's madly in-love with me/Corrin, mainly 'cause I have poor self-esteem and anxiety issues. But I do value my limbs, so maybe I should try to stay away from her when she gets unstable.

Great analysis. Normally I dislike it when people act as armchair psychologists but you have knowledge in the subject and made good points. I think Camilla was made with the yandere trope in mind for fanservice, not necessarily intentionally bland or anything but definitely mentally ill. Her writing was very consistent, as you've demonstrated. It makes sense she could have developed that way given her circumstances. Not all of the Nohrian siblings would come out mentally stable. Xander coped by subjecting himself to the role of strong, stoic heir to the throne; Leo turned to knowledge and magic when he lived in Xander's shadow and became increasingly pragmatic toward suffering; and Elise was able to have a healthy life and empathise with those in suffering more easily from having lived so close with Nohrian citizens. Camilla coped by becoming so caring her sense of identity is dependent on having people to care for, i.e. Corrin, which was the perfect opportunity to define herself. While Xander, Leo, and Elise found ways to cope by themselves, Camilla never had that opportunity. I think it's also important to note that as a female, she grew up with the expectation she was doting and caring, whereas Xander, as a male and the next heir to the throne, was given different expectations and had to suppress his emotions. Note how in Birthright, Xander and Elise meet tragic ends by fulfilling their roles to the extreme - Xander as being the crown prince, and Elise as a sacrifice to end the war. Leo is convinced through reasoning and also being shown the true state of his father, so while he states that killing Corrin was what was necessary, he was able to change his mind, and he lived. In contrast, Camilla goes batshit insane, gleefully talking about killing Corrin if it means having him. Corrin convinced her that he will end the war peacefully - that is, bring back stability in her life. Unlike her siblings, who develop in some way, she doesn't. It's easier to chalk it up to lazy writing but it's also a realistic depiction of someone with anxiety issues. Whether or not this makes her an interesting/likeable character is a matter of opinion. One more thing you didn't touch upon - her interactions with Hinoka in Conquest really caught my attention. It's another example of her violent possessiveness of Corrin and showcases her extreme jealousy toward Hinoka, as Corrin's (supposed) blood sibling. But then she also calls her pretty and relates her features to Corrin. She went from almost killing her to complimenting her - probably because when she was no longer in conflict with Corrin, Camilla had no issue with her. Camilla is fully capable of sympathizing with her enemies and she is genuinely a good person, but Corrin especially brings out a ruthless, mentally unstable part of her. It seems like separation from Corrin would actually be good for her and allow for a plotline of finding independence and perhaps moving forward, which would make for a far more developed and interesting character. But that's expecting too much of the writing of Fates.

The important thing I think of when I consider Camilla is that good characters do not always need to be good PEOPLE. Camilla is most assuredly a damaged and warped human being. The traumas that she dealt with, both at the hands of her abusive mother and her loss of Corrin in Birthright/Revelation, have completely twisted her mental state. When she sees her beloved avatar leaving her, it breaks what little semblance of humanity she had left. She becomes unhinged, and while I think it dips too far into the animuuuuuuuuuu trope shithole a bit too much (like a lot of the 3DS FE stuff does), I think the attempt, if it WAS intentional and not just an accidentally passable job, is worthy of praise at the very least. Camilla at least has something to analyse. She has some degree of depth beyond a single anime trope which is a fucking lot more than some of the Fates cast, that's for damn sure... Good video Ghast. I give it 4 stupidly impractical armour designs out of 5.

For some strange reason I actually felt bad and more because my Corrin and Hinoka were targets of Camila when I met her for the second time, sadly I had to kill her with my Killing Edge plus Dragong Fang Critical . . . damn sometimes I think Im a monster when my Corrin pulls Lethality on weaker people or woman in general ._.

It's an interesting take on Camilla, and perhaps believable, but I don't think it's a good reason to dislike her. If anything, I think it's a valid reason to like her. Camilla's issues in themselves are interesting and enjoyable to experience. But more than that, they give Camilla something good in her personality, something that isn't bland or boring. There are too many characters who have little spice in their personality, nothing that makes them pop. Sophie feels like nothing without her horse, and Silas is just that cool friendly dude. While that's all well and good, Camilla's strong spice of "she's fuckin nuts and busts up anything that threatens her way of life" makes her enjoyable and an awesome character in my opinion. Seeing her dialogue brings a smile to my face partly because it's so full of power, so full of flavor. I feel largely the same towards characters like Beruka, Niles, Peri, and Nina for that reason. Also, crazy is really beautiful and I always love seeing crazy characters being crazy.

Honestly I liked the idea of Camilla a caring motherly older sister. I always over looked her sensual appearance because I never thought of her in a sexual way I just saw her as big sister Camilla. And Honestly her fondness for the avatar bothered me deeply when it was repeatedly mentioned in so many supports (it was Cordelia and Chrom again in a way). I know she's not very good character wise and I honestly can't name a single support from her that I like but I can't hate Camilla for some reason I still like her as a sister.

I wasn't expecting to, but I ended up liking Camilla a great deal as a character. Just from reading her support conversations, I feel like I could compose an essay of speculation as to why Camilla is the way she is. It is very obvious from her dialogues that she has had a very tragic upbringing, and has been traumatized by the losses within her family. I also feel that Camilla is much more inclined to internalizing the stress she feels. As with Sakura's support conversation, she reveals a lot about her dark past, but expects little discussion in return. I would also speculate that in order to cope with her own trauma, she dissociates herself to a startling degree. Which is why you have the observance of two different personalities. One personality is a distant yet quirky and compassionate woman. The other is a blood-crazed soldier who derives joy from the slaughter of her enemies. Despite these two contrasting personalities, she appears to express genuine regret and conveys a sense of hopeless resignation towards the possibility of Sakura finding her repulsive as a person. To be honest, I've always felt that Camilla came off as a tragic and excessively lonely woman. I find that this is especially evident given her support with Laslow. When asking Laslow if he will quit flirting with other woman and put his focus on her, he casually admits that he won't be able to and doesn't even consider the idea of trying. Regardless of his answer, Camilla accepts him with little hesitation. I find that to be an act of desperation on her part which could potentially stem from feelings of loneliness. Being a princess, I feel like she could have argued a little harder on that point. Overall, I find her interactions with other characters to be quite satisfying. She also seems to exhibit a number of strengths in addition to her weaknesses in her other supports as well. For example, while the eldest prince Xander struggles control his only two retainers, Camilla commands profound loyalty in her own two retainers. In doing so, she exhibits a strong sense of calmness when interacting with her two retainers. She's also seen to be able to influence them in rather passive and subtle ways by expressing a sense of understanding for both Beruka and Selena. In Beruka's case, Camilla demonstrates a capacity to relate to Beruka's pain and claims that she was saving Beruka from herself. In doing so, she was able to instill an inexplicable level of trust and loyalty in both of her retainers. I find that to be a pretty solid mark of leadership on her part. Overall, I find her to be quite dynamic as a character, and can see a lot of depth in her personality. Despite her ridiculous costume, she has ended becoming one of my favorite Fire Emblem characters.

Seconded! She's my favorite too. And she's a far deeper character than people realize -which is part of what I live about her. She has both sides of her, but that's okay, it's part of what makes Camilla who she is. And it's through her interactions with others than we get to see more multifaceted parts of her.

Finally someone who points out her support conversation with Laslow. I hate her S support with Laslow and I feel like Laslow only proposed to her in order to keep her from in reigns for his own benefit. While he can continue raking the benefits of having Camilla, he'll be safe from Camilla herself labeling his actions of flirting with other women as betrayal.

Honestly Camilla had some of my favourite supports. But that's probably due to the exact reasons many people dislike her supports. She is a character who at first seems two dimensional but if you look deep enough is a mental train wreck. Unlike most characters who get something from there supports like Charlotte learning to be herself or two characters becoming foils for each other, or a previously evil character finding redemption, Camilla doesn't learn a lesson or find redemption and has few meaningful connections with others. She can't be fixed at least not in a short span of time which is why I find the idea of a character who actively resists the character growth the supports where based around to be interesting. Perhaps if in a sequel to the fates series or in a dlc they could take enough time to fix her mental illness in a satisfying way as part of a side story or series of side missions specific to her character. But for now I like her being the one character who is not only an accurate representation of mental illness but also a subversion of the support system (not to mention she's an overpowered unit)

It definitely says something when fans need to essentially re-write a character's background because the game itself does a terrible job of writing characters. The worst part is that these problems are also in the Japanese script, so we can't even blame this on localization. It really sucks because mechanically, I think Fates is definitely one of the best FEs, but all the out-of-battle stuff like this brings the game down quite a bit.

How is a dark character bad writing? I understand she doesn't develop the characters shes with much but she has a lot of backstory to find and she's also core to the plot of Fates even working at all. I think they definitely could've done it better though I think there's tons of examples of individual support convos that are underdeveloped, out of character, or just plain suck. Even though she doesn't change much through support, she contributes a lot to the tone of the main story and her support conversations are successfully eliciting feelings like unease due to how short of a fuse she seemingly has yet how obsessive she is about protecting her family/retainers.

Jeremy West but the main story sucks too, and there is a clear disconnect between the supports and The campaign (look no further than Xander). Because of that hack they paid to adapt the 1000 page manga outline the devs had the skeleton frame of a story but instead of filling it they just left it as is. It's painfully noticeable when the script called for an emotional scene or a shocking happening. They never did anything with it, but instead decided to put a boobstrap between Camilla's tits, who literally shows no character development in the story I'm sorry. Camilla's mechanic was "doting on her family" and the Veteran team tried their best to humanize them but the Fanservice IS team chose the obvious fanservice over substantial character arcs or ANYTHING redeeming

I think a major piece of Camilla's character which is never brought up is her conversation with Corrin and the Hoshidan Royals after she joins the party in Revelations - the scene on the boat. During this conversations, she states that she wouldn't think twice about killing the Hoshidan kids if Corrin asked her too. Much like how she talks about Selena, Laslow, or Jacob. However, there is a major difference with how this comment ends; when her comments are poorly received, she says "Alright then, no more dark humour" rather cheerily. Until this key piece of dialogue, I thought that she was exactly as this video described; but then this point opened up the whole possibility that she just has a really odd sense of humour, and that she is also aware of this. Overbearing mother-role, not in question. However, the fact that this opens up the possibility of another side to her in the One True Path does have interesting implications. See, I think it's worth keeping in mind that Fates is ambitious, in depth, and also, a bit funky. The three paths are actually not consistent with each other regarding their explanation for things. In every game, there's a different explanation for Azura's disappearance/potential disappearance. The Revelations answer is the real one, but Valla isn't mentioned by name until that game; in the other games, it has something to do with her pendant and her singing itself, but we never actually learn WHAT that is. The other thing about Fates (and this is true of any FE game, I'd imagine) is that some supports are just. Plain. Bad. It doesn't matter who it is, but every character has them. You know the type - Supports that don't make sense, supports in which one or both characters act OOC, supports which are just plain dumb. And worst of all, S supports which are about as far from satisfying as going to get a slice of your favourite pizza only to find out the box is empty because everyone else got there first. Camilla is no exception. Incidentally, and for the record, my favourite S support with her is Takumi. I just think it works, and I do think both characters grow from it in some way, even though Camilla's growth in that support is very subtle - to the point of being almost nonexistent, at least at first glance. I also did happen to like her support with Corrin, whether Corrin's her brother or her sister; I think it actually develops their relationship quite nicely, and Camilla again does showcase some self-awareness and character growth later down the chain.

I have to admit this is why Camilla is one of my favorite royals. No she's not perfect, yes she has to much fanservice, and yes she can be creepy. That being said though I find her interesting, how she would end up like she is, and just how bad it can be for her, and I'd honestly love to see more about how she deals with Corrin becoming King/Queen in Revelations, needing her less and less, and Elise growing up. Side note, I was so sad when I found out Camilla doesn't have a support with Azura, her sister(as far as she knows), and a 'lovely lady', just as Camilla says she likes.

I'm not sure that the line "I'll protect Corrin even at the cost of your life" is a threat to him. I take it as more of a "If I had to choose between saving only one of you, I will save Corrin" Anyways I really liked this because it gives some background on why she's so creepily possessive and protective. It's sad really. She's just emotionally broken from her childhood, and in a way, she can't help herself. Still, it's a bit scary that she is "yandere" in the sense that she would sooner kill someone she loves than to see them abandon her.

Camilla is my favorite Fates character because she is far from boring and has a very specific personality that contrasts with itself sharply. She seems really sweet on the surface or like she needs some comfort, but getting that close to her is dangerous.

I feel so bad for Selena, she was semi-unwillingly roped into the Fates dimension after coming from the future to meet her parents, one disgustingly perfect in every way. There’s also the possibility she has to kill her father as Grima. She can’t return to the future she once knew, and when she comes to the world of Fates she must join a random bible family all in hopes of protecting Corrin should a god go insane. However, Severa’s unsure whether she can return to the closest thing she has to home at the end of the war because Camilla would rather chop her legs of than see her leave. It’s messed up.

This is a really interesting take on Camilla. I think that most characters pre-Three Houses tend to be one-dimensional, but this video did make me think differently on the Camilla front. She definitely has some mental problems and, like you said, I’m happy they aren’t fixed over the course of one support chain, because that wouldn’t be realistic and it makes her a consistent character. I’m sad nobody ever talks to her about it, though. Similarly to Peri, most of the cast acts as an enabler. One thing you didn’t mention is her support with her other retainer. For some reason, she is not nearly as possessive over Beruka, when their entire support revolves around the possibility of Beruka betraying her. This, if anything, should make her disturbed, as Beruka leaving would mean change. She seemingly accepts her retainer’s betrayal should it happen.

I'm getting healthier and always working on my mental health, but Camilla as herself is extremely relatable to me, particularly in the way I used to be. I'm majoring in psychology and was diagnosed with BPD, and I see the signs of low functioning BPD in Camilla. The avoidance of real or imagined abandonment via threatening to kill or even actually killing her loved ones, the black and white thinking, the possessiveness, how depressed and suicidal she gets when Corrin leaves, how controlling and unintentionally manipulative she is, just to get people to stay. She is also very impulsive and has extreme issues with rage. BPD is typically brought on by parental/maternal abandonment (physically leaving or betraying the child's trust via putting them in danger, using them, and denying them love) and/or sexual abuse. I theorize all of the BPD symptoms revolve around the constant fear of abandonment, so calling it separation anxiety is an understatement, although most borderline people also deal with that. Camilla's mother martyr complex is extremely extremely UNHEALTHY, it is what I lived with my whole life until extensive therapy. Camilla should not be in a relationship of any kind living like that, because it is just everyone enabling her to be destructive and abusive and sick.

To add to what is said in this video, in the japanese version of her support with Hinoka, Camilla also arguably shows possessiveness towards Hinoka herself. While what Camilla herself says in the support is pretty tame in comparison to the Selena support, it's Hinoka's response that's eyebrow raising which is "Th-that’s true. I kind of felt like Princess Camilla was giving me a rather passionate look there… is her taking a liking to me really a good thing…?" which implies that the tone/expression Camilla uses previously was probably within that same aggressive possessiveness.

Nice video. Personally, I think she has some good supports, more specifically the ones with her siblings (apart from Corrin) and Niles. I can understand why she'd want to be so protective of Corrin, but unfortunately she came off as more obsessive than as a sisterly or motherly figure who wants to protect them from how dangerous and dark the world is. I admit, Camilla is one of my favorite female characters of Fates, so I just wish Intelligent Systems treated her with more respect.

Damn I honestly... wow this was really insightful and even if you don't think of her in much of a different light now, I certainly do. Unfortunately, I don't believe the writers of FE were good enough to intentionally add something so deep to a character obviously created for fanservice. I think all that was going through their heads was "Well, the concept artist gave us this character with HUGE ass bazongas. Now we need a personality -bc working backwards is fun-. Oh, how about someone who's motherly but also cruel so then she's 2 dimensional! -lies- and completely original!! On top of that, because she's so 'motherly' she smothers people with her boobs! lol she calls it hugging. -we call it marketing-" then someone else replied "sounds like a -cash grab- I mean interesting idea! Let's do it!!" and so they made the ironically flat character that is Camilla today. Not that because of this I'm not gonna draw things revolving around her having this disorder now, Because then I'd be lying.

i like camilla but i also i feel unease around her.... she gives me this feeling similar to like.... like wanting to free a caged and dangerous animal from puchers, you know that this animal is probably going to die if you leave it alone but fear that the monet you set it free the animal is going to kill you, and you know that you can't outrun it or defend againts it in any way.... like...you want to help her because you care about her, and you know she is at best a really loving, supporting and caring person (you can also add the fact that you probably have the hots for her, but hey no one could blame you for that), but...you also aren't brave enough to try it, because you don't know a good method to do it, and the best method that comes to your mind is probably confronting her in the most calm way possible, but you know that's probably still a huge no no in her book, so you don't know how is she going to react, or even if she is going to turn violent againts you....or even if she recognized she has a problem, you don't know if she is even going to try to change, or...if she tries...you don't know how much support is she going to need, how she will take that support, and if she is going to endure enough to solve it or her problem will scale into something worst.... sorry if this was waay too long and horrible writted or expresed, my english isn't exactly the best...

Super awesome analysis! In hindsight, it’s also interesting how, during the Conquest route when you’re storming the castle and just beat Hinoka, Hinoka doesn’t flee initially and tearfully calls you her brother/sister, and Camilla out of nowhere steps in, swings her axe at Hinoka, BARELY stops her swing MILLIMETRES away from decapitating her... and plays it off as “Oh, whoopsie (: clumsy me (: Go run off and hide sweetie and let me and MY darling sibling handle this”.

I'm loving this series right now. The Azura episode was a great watch that sold me on the premise of the show (in my opinion FE's characterisation always shines brighter in it's supports) but this episode convinced me subscribe and gave me a new level of respect for you. Putting this much thought and analysis into a character you don't like, not to mention a character that is often written off as a one-note joke, and making her sound interesting to boot is an impressive feat. Keep up the great work.

Just a quick question, will you do a video about Takumi? After watching this, I'm lead to believe that there is someone in the Hoshidan royal family who mirrors this sort of behavior, in one way or another. And Hinoka certainly doesn't have anything noteworthy about her character. So is Takumi the Hoshidan who shares the mental illness with Camilla? I mean, it's possible, right? If you choose Conquest, even without the whole possession arc, he seems kinda... I dunno, different, than if you choose Birthright. And then at the end of Conquest, when Corrin talks to him for the last time, he dotes on Corrin, saying he always wanted to fight alongside Corrin and love Corrin, now that Corrin's there in front of him. I don't think that was because he was possessed that he now shows this side of him. I think he may have something similar to Camilla. I dunno. You probably won't read this but I just thought that if you did, you'd hear my thoughts. It's nice having them out there like this lol

I don't know about you, but I sort of find that kinda stuff.... attractive? This massive devotion and love if you return equal devotion, it just seems... okay? Also, I think the Selena x Camilla Support is just Camilla telling Selena that she'd be very sad and hurt if Selena had to leave.

I came here from a video where Ghast said that he liked Camilla because he found her interesting while he didn't like Ike because he found him bland, but then in this video he said he just straight out doesn't like Camilla. It's interesting how our perceptions change over time.

I never actually read the supports for Camilla (I always had her paired up with Arthur, because she became a designated transporter), so seeing this dive into her is a real eye-opener. I still enjoy her as a character, though I do agree that she does feel lacklustre. At the same time, though, the way the Nohrian siblings' history is suggested, with a concubine "war" of sorts, Camilla being an overprotective, unstable older sister is actually comprehensible. She's been used as a tool, has probably been expected to kill her fellow siblings in pursuit of the crown, but in reality, she wants to manage some kind of balance and normality of a "functioning" family, even if it's just playing house. I think the backstory of the siblings, paired with her personality fits well as a result of this (I doubt it'd work as well if she were a Hoshidan sibling, for example).

The awakeningtrio after their supports: Selena:"You guys have to help me. When we are leaving, I am in serious danger because camilla will hunt me down." Laslow:"You joking? I love her, but I would never have the curage to tell her to let you leave. She is going to kill me before she cripples you" Odin:"Odin dark will take his leave without ever talking to crazy princess! Sorry, friends."

When you started talking about Camilla's darker side it was really effective that you used the darker toned music in the background. I wanna give you hella bonus points for that.
