Actually, the "I've heard the future" quote was not from Bowie, but the producer he was working with at the time, Brian Eno, who before that had produced albums for Roxy Music and later on U2. According to Bowie himself, Brian Eno came running into the studio with the 45 and said "I have heard the future!"

Even at the time, we didn’t love it right away. It was tough to dance to because we were listening to ABBA and whatever else. The rest of the album this song was from was pretty conventional disco. Giorgio Moroder was setting down a blueprint for dance music after the 70’s.

This was never on the radio at first and you just got to hear it at clubs, especially gay clubs. Some of the best dancing I,ve ever seen and so much fun.

Absolutely right I was 12 and I heard this coming from a radio in the school kitchen I was mesmerised stuck in my tracks time stood still and there was only one tune now 47 years later I am still standing still listening to this amazing game changing sound

The 12" version is one of Donna's best tracks imo. Based on a melody from the classical composer Chopin. Barry Manilow put words to the melody & recorded it as a ballad. Donna & Giorgio then made their disco version of the song which to me is still the best version. In the UK it was a top 10 hit for her as the follow up to the mega worldwide hit 'Love to love you baby' which turned her into a superstar almost overnight. Banned by radio but just a beautiful sensual song sung with the voice of an angel. Thousands of babies would have been made whilst playing the 17min long LP version of that song! Barry Manilow made his own dance version of the song after hearing Donna's wonderful version & had a decent hit himself with it. Years later in the 90's the boyband Take That made their own dance version of it, minus the heavy breathing, & took it all the way to no 1. 'I feel love' was Donna's 5th hit in the UK & shot to no 1 staying there for 4 weeks. I think no 4 in the US. It was Giorgio Moroder producing a song that he wanted to sound like it had come from the future & it was like nothing anyone had heard before. Disco ruled the world but 'I feel love' was something else entirley & was the trailblazer to all the electronic sounds of the later '70s & '80s, into house, trance & techno. It was definately of it's time & not before it's time. It was really more thinking about the future, which was the intention of course. It's huge success proved they knew their stuff when useing all the new arriving synthesizers but it was still very relevant of the times. It will still fill any dancefloor today but if you're not into dancing yourself I can understand why this track might have passed you by. She sadly died way too young but her music legacy is huge & as much as she could sing like an angel she also had the most powerful set of lungs on her. Try 'McCarthur Park' or her singing at the superbowl 'The star spangled banner' if you want proof. She deserves a proper movie biopic with a soundtrack to educate people. Her lifestory is quite an amazing one too, I just don't understand why Hollywood haven't given it a greenlight.

Ecstacy didn't come along until the late 80s. LSD was the best accompaniment to this at the time in '77 . Mixed with other personal recreationals available at the time it was the perfect night out. Kept me slim as a teenager anyways! Spacedisco as a genre was born & the rest is history.

The original version was the album version of 5 & a bit minutes. When they released a 12" version later it was edited up to the 8 minutes you mention which was better for dancefloors. 5 years later Patrick Cowley, the new synthesizer wizard on the scene, produced an even better 13 minute ultimate version. He added his own unique style of pure magical disco chaos to an already amazing song & it reached no 21 on the UK charts. In '95 it was given another house remix which reached no 8, although in my opinion that mix took the energy out of the original. It's been remixed a thousand times since to varying degrees of good or bad but proves to show you just cant keep a monumental hit like this down.

You're right. The original was the 5 + minute album version released in May 1977. I initially purchased the 12" single version (released about 4 months later). Subsequently my brain tells me it's the original and of course I had to look this all up. The album version is fine, but the single is a masterpiece. The Patrick Cowley version, in my opinion, is more a novelty; he tried too hard and added sections that, to me, seem disconnected from the rest of the song; simply add-ons that don't really connect or blend with the original in a cohesive manner. I don't know anything about any other released versions. I usually think they're 💩. BUT ANTON, I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction. I have to check out your other videos. @@rsmith7912

@@60sStyling I was around at the time so I know I'm right. I saw that you like to know the true details about songs which is why I wanted to just inform you. The 12" mix isn't a remix either just an extra edit of the original album version which was the intention also the same as the 7" single version. As far as I can recall the 12" was only released in America anyway. On it's b-side was another extended version of a following hit 'The Deep' which was brilliant too. It was a way for Casablanca to get maximum mileage out of both tracks as they were still massive in the discos. We'll have to disagree on the Patrick Cowley version I think. To really appreciate it you would have had to hear it through club speakers & played very loud. I'm presuming you might have not been experienced in disco dancing at the time. It was aimed purely at the dancefloors where the song was still hugely popular. It wasn't meant for radio where it wouldn't sound so good & was way too long anyway. I've always enjoyed finding out about music from the past as well. When you look in with retrorespect though, it's no wonder that sometimes the information might be wrong basically because you just weren't there at the time. Which is where us oldies dip in, see we can be usefull sometimes. End of todays lesson.
