In this age of technology at your fingertips, it's hard to explain how big of a star he was at the time. He was truly the biggest star in the world and to see him was an event. He didn't need dancers, big elaborate setups, etc. With these Vegas shows, the world came to see him instead of the other way around. The International Hotel was one of the biggest at the time as well. It's too bad that he never performed outside of the US, except for a couple shows in Canada early in his career. As a fan you had to buy the music that you heard on the radio. You'd follow newspapers and entertainment magazines for concert information. There was only a few main tv channels, and Elvis was unfortunately kept out of more public appearances because his manager demanded payment to see Elvis perform. He was kept busy after the Army doing 3 movies a year for10 years.
