Bringing the IMDB trivia in: "According to director Mike Flanagan, the performance of Jacob Tremblay during the first take of his death scene was so intense that it surprised and scared the other actors, including Rebecca Ferguson, who was so horrified she was stammering and "couldn't get her lines out". When the scene was over, a grinning Tremblay jumped up, covered in fake blood, high-fived his father and walked over to the craft service to get a snack, leaving Ferguson and the rest of the cast "shell-shocked and traumatized".

It is one hell of a dark scene so I can't blame them. I am glad that more recent horror films have the guts to kill kid characters off. Not because I want to see kids die but because it's scarier when the killer or monster will kill anyone of any age. Some horrors where teens and adults die but kids are made invincible was always a bit strange to me.

Rebecca Furgeson is one hell of an attractive woman and a damn good actress too. She is great in everything I have seen her in. This is such a great movie, my only gripe was some of the ending sequences. The cast was great, the call backs were great. Spooky, creepy and a great addition to the original. The baseball boy scene I knew was going to be rough for the misses. In the Blu-ray, the kid had a blast doing that scene so no worries! Cheers!

I might be among the few who like it much more than The Shinning. Then I saw the director, Mike Flanagan and I understood why I loved it. He's a master! I really love how King has been embracing more and more of a Kingverse in his works, all tied into The Dark Tower storyline. For example, the True Knot is a lot like Pennywise, feasting on the souls of children in fear because they taste the best. Their eyes even resemble the Dead Lights at times. If someone managed to form a studio like the one Marvel put together just to adapt King books properly and with consistent quality and including all the tie-ins he leaves(post-credits scenes anyone), there could be some epic build-up to a real Dark Tower movie event. They could milk that for years and years and if they hurry, we could get King cameos. I feel like Flanagan could head that project quite well, but then we'd rob ourselves of all the original works he would have made us.

The Dark Tower should be an animated series in the vein of Castlevania. The movie was an abomination, and King endorsed it.

I liked the detail mentioned in the book, that there was a strong chance that since the True Knot paticulary took children, they were helping to eliminate the 'shine' trait from people, since those with it never got a chance to have their own kids.

The True Knot members in Doctor Sleep are also very similar to Charlie Manx in the book Nos4A2, written by Joe Hill, Stephen King’s son.
@jimballard1186
@jimballard1186 2 жыл бұрын
@@n0tk0sher I'll never know the particulars of the licensing agreement, but given how much Hollywood loves contracts, I'm sure King was legally required to endorse the film...which is a bad film, but not as bad as all that. Anyway, I think trying to turn the Dark Tower into movies or TV is always going to be a bad idea. At their core, the Dark Tower books are metaphors for what it's like to write a Stephen King book, so the message seems tied to the medium.

Yep, this movie nailed the Addict mentality and recovery process. I mean, they didn't go too in-depth, but: He was an Alcoholic, he hit his "Rock Bottom", He joined a Sobriety Group and gained a Support System, stuck to sobriety while battling urges. This movie got a lot of things "right". The violence against children was just horrifying, Jacob Tremblay is an amazing actor and he was only 13 when he starred in this. Jeez.

In the novel this is based on, Danny is Abra`s uncle although he doesn`t know it. Abra`s mother is the result of an affair his father had with a teaching assistant. In the novel Danny lives through these events. The film changes that which is something I don`t like . Rose The Hat is one of King`s scariest villains . Unlike most of his others , she can hide in plain sight . She can also invade your dreams . Believe it or not this film failed at the box-office. So glad it`s finding new fans in the home market. It`s a masterpiece.

I re-watched this film with my dad recently, still absolutely love it and feel it's not just a worthy sequel, but holds up as a standalone film given its distinct style and great performances, and having a genuine sense of heart shine through the horror (no pun intended). I don't love the original Shining film, its great in certain aspects but I have issues with it, so I like that this leaned more into its own identity with the traditional Stephen King ideas, like just acknowledging the ghosts for what they are, you couldn't tell this story whilst maintaining that mystery aspect of the 1980 film. I've got some nitpicks with the Director's cut even though I do prefer it to the theatrical. Really the only major one is the incredible bar scene I think is better in the theatrical cut without the bathroom scene afterwards. As soon as Danny says no to taking his medicine his arc is complete, and they were smart with how they shot the actor playing Jack from side profile with only the final shot being front on, so it continuing after that just feels unnecessary to me. Plus it's super distracting since it's not Jack Nicholson, and I love when Danny tells him about having to alter his mother's mind so she could look at him normally again, the emotional performance there was enough for me, I didn't need a flashback earlier showing it. Still, quality reactions as usual.

I think this is up there with Aliens, Terminator 2, and The Godfather 2 as one of the best sequels of all-time. While it might not be quite up there in that elite stratosphere, it is dang near as perfect of a continuation of that story that anybody could've asked for. The new plot, the Danny character arc, and Rose the Hat make it one of the most interesting films of the last 10 years. Just like Solo: A Star Wars Story, it flopped at the Box Office but will probably end up a cult favorite in its respective franchise, IMO.

To give Shelly Duvall that haunted look to her eyes in The Shinning, Kubrick mercilessly yelled and screamed at her, made her redo scenes over and over for near forty takes just to get her stressed out and get that haggered look. He was brutal and merciless when it came to perfecting his craft and getting people into the right emotional state for their roles. Ironically, he kept the kid that played Danny off set for scary scenes, and convinced him that they were making a comedy when the kid was on set, which is probably the only nice thing anyone ever remembers Kubrick doing for anyone.

I never noticed that Elm Str. sign the two times I've watched this movie. I wonder if it's the actual name of that street or if it was added as a tiny easter egg. ;)

Love this movie. Glad you're watching The Haunting of Hill House as well. Mike Flanagan has another series coming out this Friday that looks really good as well called Midnight Mass.

Interesting bit of trivia -- the cat in the hospice is based on a real cat, named Oscar. Check out a book called MAKING THE ROUNDS WITH OSCAR for the full story, although there is a really good feature news story that can be found online. Oscar was a cat in either a hospice or a care facility for the elderly, I forget which. Oscar was pretty standoffish, except when someone was about to die; Oscar would go into their rooms and lay down on their beds to keep them company. His actions were so accurate at "predicting" a patient's imminent death that when the nursing staff would see him in a patient's room, they would call the family to let them know to come say their final goodbyes. (Side trivia -- the term for a being [otherworldly, or spirit, or gifted mortal] who helps a person to cross over into death, to make the transition as it were, is "psychopomp.")

Surprised y’all didn’t notice that the room in which Danny is given a job at the hospice is identical to the one in which his father was given the job of caretaker at the Overlook

Dont know if you noticed this, but the office at the hospice center where Danny had the interview is the exact same office in the Overlook Hotel when Jack Torrance was having his interview for the caretaker position!

So here's some things they skip over in the movie due to them trying to continue from the first movie: 1. Part of the reason Danny and Abra have such a strong connection is because they are related. Abra's grandmother was a woman whom Danny's father had an affair with years ago. Abra's mom is Danny's half- sister, making Abra his half- niece. 2. Jack Torrance is revealed to have had the shining and this was why he became an alcoholic. Unlike Danny, he never truly knew what the shining was or that he had it. He knew he had some special abilities, but they scared him, and he turned to drinking. As Danny got older he started to realize that alcohol got rid of the shining abilities and he ended up down the same path as his dad. 3. The guy who managed to convince Danny to get help was also gifted with the shining, he mentions he can sense when people are down on their luck and need help. He is part of the reason why so many people voluntarily go to AA. 4. In the end of The Shining book, the hotel is destroyed when Jack momentarily gains his sanity and tries but fails to keep the generator from exploding. The True Knot can sense the dark energy from the hotel and thus make the former foundation of the Overlook Hotel their base of operations. In the book it mentions how they are very rich and bought the area where the hotel once stood so no one is allowed to go there. As in the movie, the final battle takes place there just minus the hotel. 5. Danny does NOT die in the end in the book, he actually celebrates 15 years of sobriety with Abra's family. They changed the details because although in the books they mention he is related to Abra, it wouldn't make sense to have him hang out with her family in the movie because they take that part out, 6. As Ya'll mentioned, Dick does not die either, at least not when Danny is a child. Another fact the movie left out is that his grandmother taught him how to make the boxes in his mind. He was sexually abused by his grandfather and after his death he would still haunt Dick, his grandmother helped him trap him in a box. 7. In the book Danny mentions that he sees flies on people before they die. He had seen them on his mom before she succumbed to lung cancer, and also saw them on the girl from the beginning of the movie with the little boy. This pre- knowledge of people's death, and realizing he knew his mom would die before she did, was a big reason he turned to alcohol. The mom you see with the baby was confirmed to have died of an overdose while her son was killed her abusive boyfriend. 8. An interesting little fact about Snakebite Andi, the girl who can make people believe what she wants them to. She was molested by her father for years, even into her early teens. Eventually she stabbed him to death and becomes very resentful towards men, more specifically older men. She decides to use her young appearance to lure these men onto dates and then rob them as well as expose them as the creeps they are. In the book she and Rose actually become lovers for a while and Andi recalls that Rose was the very first person to give her a good sex experience.

In the original Shining book, there's no maze, the hedges are topiary animals that come to life. Jack stalks Wendy with a croquet mallet, not an axe. And he dies when he regains his sanity and uses the boiler to blow up the hotel, sacrificing himself to save Danny and Wendy from the hotel. Tony is revealed to be older Danny using his psychic abilities to try and keep his younger self safe. His full name is Daniel Anthony Torrance. There's a miniseries of The Shining that King personally made in the 90s that is far more faithful to the book and in it you see Tony talking to Danny, he isn't just Danny's finger. At the end you see adult Danny graduating from college and it's the Tony you've been seeing the whole film. I believe Jack's ghost is there smiling, too.
