Unicorn day at the Oregon Coast fishing for rock fish and cockles. 20+ foot visibility always calls for a good time. We ended up freediving and playing with the fish after we limited out. Saw lingcod, kelp greenling, blue, black, and copper rockfish, dungeness crab, rock crab, cockles, and gaper clams. It's always a great time getting into the water, regardless of conditions.

Always nice to see local spearfishing. Until I can get a wetsuit, I'm stuck with 68°+ freshwater.

Agreed. It can get pretty chilly without the proper gear. At least the first 5 minutes until your face and limbs get numb 😄

20+! In the `70's I taught diving at a PADI shop in Monterey, CA, and we'd pray for 20 feet! Usually it was 5-10:-( My wife got certified after i quit teaching, and her instructor wore a pair of red and green checked leisure suit pants over his dry suit for their open water dive. No matter the vis, you could see that thing from across the harbor!! The truly scary thing was, somewhere in the world, was the matching jacket!!!

I love your videos and I wasn’t aware that Spearfishing is even a thing in the PNW! Especially in the cold pacific. Is there a way that I could reach out to you to ask about your thoughts and advice on Spearfishing on the Oregon coast? Thanks

I know how cold 🥶 our ocean is and I cannot believe that you spearfish it it. Wetsuit or not, it is STILL freezing cold water!! LOL!! My son in law is a surfer 🏄‍♂️ and he will go out at the butt-crack of dawn to surf in our frigid waters. I am surprised that he does not spearfish with his love of the water. I am curious as to how long you last in the water with your wetsuit? Wishing you many more safe spearfishing trips. Are you an Oregonian native, born and raised?
@borce32
@borce32 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kathleen thank you for your kind words. Yes its definitely cold at times but you get used to it. I’ve had 2 hour dives before and stayed warm. Our wetsuits are pretty advanced and will keep you warm for a long time. I am originally from Europe but moved to Oregon in 2000 and have been here ever since. I was basically raised here just not born 😄

Where do you go to dive for Cockles? It looked like you switched to a different spot. I always dig them up in Depot Bay, but I'd love insight on where to dive for them.
@borce32
@borce32 3 жыл бұрын
Michael, I dive for them in tillamook bay but Netarts is probably a better spot. They’re everywhere you just need to be able to spot them.

@borce32
@borce32 3 жыл бұрын
Dustin I use it especially in bad viz. a longer gun will give you more trouble and is harder to maneuver. If you have 2-4 ft visibility it will be hard to see the tip of your gun let alone hit a fish. Its good to have options tho.

Hey dude, my name is Alejo. Nice work! I live kinda near Cave Junction, OR. I've dived a couple times in Brookings but i am still in the process of finishing my freediving certification with Southern Oregon Freediving Co. If it weren't for these restrictions closing the pools i would've been finished 6 months ago. So i don't have much experience, but i'm looking for someone to practice safely with. Do you know any spearfishers down on the southern part of the coast willing to let me join a dive? Or yourself, would you be willing to let me join you on a dive? I'm heading to the coast tomorrow hoping to dive. Thanks for the inspiring video either way.

Hey Alejo great to meet you. Its super awesome you’re getting about to finish up your diving certification. I’m always down to dive with new people as long as you’re experienced and have taken a class. I dont know anyone in the area but if you ever come up here in the Tillamook area please let me know. Would be great to dive together
