*** Update: If this video helps you in any way, be sure to subscribe to my channel because I recently purchased a new lock for the sole purpose of doing a complete teardown and reverse engineering on it so we can all have a permanent fix. Because the issue does not seem to be going away, and all the "fixes" seem to work for a while, but do not fix it indefinately. And thank you to everyone for the amazing response to my video!
Video explaining how to fix a Schlage brand keypad entry deadbolt that stops turning when cold weather hits.

Will the key still open the lock if this issue occurs?
@dancwilliams
@dancwilliams 5 жыл бұрын
@@burn31 Yes. If you insert the key and make a 1/4 turn of the lock tumbler you can then press in the tumbler to engage the mechanism to manually unlock the deadbolt. I am sorry if I messed up the names of any technical pieces of a lock.
@timparr246
@timparr246 2 жыл бұрын
@@burn31 Yes, BUT...You must keep pushing as you turn the key until it engages more (that's what Dan means when he mentions 1/4 turn. It might take much more than a 1/4 turn but once the key is actually all the way in, it will work.)

The stretchiness shouldn't come into play. It's functioning as a rotating coil so when the solenoid spins the little nub on the plastic piece rotates and draws the plastic piece up or down. I fixed three now. The spring is always bunched up. The piece that sets into the coil is a little different on each one. I don't know if a coil needs to be soft to function right. It's probably sensitive to heat and cold cycles which might be the cause of it gradually tightening up. I would think a more rigid coil would work just as fine and not be prone to this cold weather fault.

We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version kzfaq.infoUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

This video was awesome. Every time the temperature dipped below 50°F I would get locked out of my house for 30 to 45 minutes because the lock mechanism wouldn’t engage. You provided clear, step-by-step instructions that made it very simple for me to fix the problem without having to call the landlord. Thank you so much.

What astounds me the most (even more than how Schlage seems to have no clue or willingness to acknowledge this widespread & major problem) is how on earth you figured it out. Unbelievable. Thanks so much, man. Bloody brilliant.

Yeah, I'm surprised they haven't redesigned it to be more reliable, especially since this problem costs them money since anyone with one of these locks can return it for a free replacement whenever it stops working. We've had them replace ours a few times now.
@mike.s.605
@mike.s.605 Жыл бұрын
@@videosuperhero100 I suspect that might mean the pin got reinstalled too far up the spring or something. I tested mine several times before reassembling anything and it went back and forth (seemingly correctly) maybe a couple dozen times. Now I'll let it get fully cold again in the outside air and re-test, but I'm thinking it should be ok now.
@KLondike5
@KLondike5 Жыл бұрын
I wonder how the metal locking pin & it's spring positioning affects the solenoid and coil. He put it back together with the pin pointing mostly to the right when it would put more downward force by having the pin facing downward. That should make it easier for the solenoid to release the lock. I would just make a mark so I could tell which way the inner pin was positioned during future reassembly for other reasons. I also just realized after reopening it that having the locking pin positioned near it's left or right edge of its range that it's banging against the stop when the solenoid is trying to slide the plastic piece up or down which could add an inaccuracy over time since it's range is being limited in one direction or the other.

Perfect video. Repositioning the plastic “thingy” onto the spring was the ticket. I saw another video where the pin fell off. Not my issue. I can also see where a weak battery combined with this spring issue can seem similar. In some cases a new battery might prolong doing this procedure. After a few years I’m guessing everyone will have to do this. Imagine how many people either live with a non functioning lock or got frustrated and threw the lock set out. Schlage should send you a royalty. Thanks boss.

While you have it apart. Stretch the spring out to make the gaps bigger. This ensures when the pin swivels it actually makes the travel of the pin longer which ensures full range of motion when engaged. I had to do this as my pin would not fully engage once colder than minus 20 here in canada! I think the extreme cold actually makes the spring shrink or coil in and then I wasnt getting the pin to fully engage into the cog

Gonna try this. I followed this video and it worked for a few minutes, but the motor doesn't have over-run stopping, so eventually, the spring just coils itself too short again. Will try stretching the spring in addition.

Thanks for posting this video. The BIG PITA about this issue is that it occurs when it's at the most inconvenient time. Freezing cold outside. At your front door. When you never take that key with you because the code has always worked before. That said, we will use the key until it warms up (in a day or so) and then perform this maintenance fix.

It’s a 50 degree day and drizzling here in San Diego and our lock is doing this very thing. Though even the key isn’t working with it. It makes it skip as well. Five stars for calmly explaining. Mine is new and has this problem. I never even got to use it yet. The lock came defective from Schlage.

Thank you very much for your informative video. I fixed two of mine that I've been very frustrated with for a few months. It took about 30 minutes to take BOTH of them apart, clean and fix them so they work like new. You saved me over $250 so I didn't have to replace them. Additionally my pin had some contaminates on it so a good wipe down of the pin and cleaning of the hole seems to reduce the amount of pressure the spring needs to overcome. Kudos!
