How does letting the RTV dry a bit work out with the clearance on the paper gasket? Isn't it going to gap more than the gasket spec? I have tubes of Ford black RTV, but my problem is taking off that Oil Pan it appears since the bottom of it goes right up against the timing cover. Some say this doesn't need to be done if you are careful not to tear the gasket that's in place. Any input would be appreciated.

My ranger xlt ,had a concealed leak,previous owner. Had dye test done ,showed nothing fractured, it ended up being a defective timing chain cover,it had a finger nail sized hole in the gasket area,,sitting right beside the top bolt ,it'd get hot ,steam out the hole,drying on the hot engine, before a puddle could form,from the leak,they checked everything but that timing chain cover,I had to purchase a new cover,275.00 dollars, ouch

At 4:48 what is that the lifters? Once in a blue moon some times my 3.0 ranger sounds like that on cold starts? Seems like it went away once I switched from motor craft synthetic blend to royal purple full synthetic oil

Hmm... Not sure what that is, and it usually doesn't make that noise. Honestly though I kind of hope it's something bad and it blows up cuz I don't have an excuse to 5.0 swap it 😂

Nice procedure video but as a 50 year and going mechanic, that RTV was the first type to come out in the 70's and today, we have RTV's that are so much better. I actually rather use Hylomar sealant for its ability to not dry and can be used as a gasket alone. Red Permatex spray tack would be good too, or copper for higher heat. Telling people that putting as much RTV on things is a good thing can people in trouble. But hey, it's you video.......

I understand that the crank balancer needs to be pushed in with an air hammer or something to be able to get the bolt started. Did you also use blue lock tight on that bolt.
@ClayRepairs
@ClayRepairs Жыл бұрын
Yep, I would use either a rubber mallet or a block of wood and hammer to put it on until you can get the bolt to thread in. And yes, definitely use blue or orange locktite.

Which bolts need sealant on the threads? And do you have the torque specs for all the bolts?
@ClayRepairs
@ClayRepairs Жыл бұрын
I would put sealant on all of them just in case, but there is one on either side (near the middle) that must have sealant on it since they are basically coolant drain bolts. If I remember correctly, torque was like 18 ft-lbs, but you should double check.

I’m debating on doing this to my mom’s 2000 Ford Ranger. We need another vehicle like we need another foot. She has my dad’s 08 Ford Explorer Eddie Bower now since he passed in September and the truck has just been sitting in my driveway. Having some title issues since we don’t know where the title is and the revenue office is being a turd so we are probably going to just scrap it unfortunately and sell the camper shell. I have an 08 fully decked out Crown Vic interceptor and an 03 Excursion I don’t drive anymore because I’m always in my work truck and I’m sure in the Hell not getting rid of them. I just want my damn driveway back though 😂

A head gasket leak can cause the timing cover gasket to fail due to high pressure in the cooling system. At least that’s what happened to my truck.
@ClayRepairs
@ClayRepairs Жыл бұрын
Hmmm... Now that I think about it, that does make sense. Hope I don't have a head gasket leak tho 😅

@ClayRepairs
@ClayRepairs Жыл бұрын
As long as you do it correctly, it should last years. Mine has no leak after 3-4 months, so if it needs to be done, I would say do it yourself and you'll save $1000 instead of going to a mechanic.

I had the same issue. Sluggish shifts and fuel economy issues. Change your transmission fluid and filter. After you remove your filter, check all of your valve body bolts. If they are loose. Snug them up in a criss-cross pattern. Install your new filter and recommended fluid that's usually engraved on the transmission dipstick.
