1999 Toyota Tacoma. Replacing the catalytic with welding the flanges on it and welding the crack on the exhaust manifold.
NOTE: It is always recommended to replace all gaskets when replacing parts in the exhaust system. But I didn't, I looked at all the gaskets and it looked OK to reuse.
Friend could not pass smog for registration renewal. I took a look and diagnosed it was the exhaust leak and a bad catalytic converter with a code of P0420, Catalytic efficiency below threshold and P0446, Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction.
I repaired the truck, cleared the codes and it passed smog. As for the P0446, I told him when the check engine light comes on to bring it back and I will find the leak. I found the leak so there will be another video on P0446 code.
My son was so helpful on filming. I love you Landen!!
RepaiPal App Estimate: (if you were to take it to a shop)
Check engine Light Diagnosis: $99-$126
Exhaust Manifold Replacement: $346-$461

1996 Taco with the 2rz-fe. Researched to try and diagnose idle vibration. Mine has an automatic gearbox and would begin to vibrate excessively when at optimal temperature in drive. Park and neutral were slightly better but the problem would stop as long as it was moving. Disconcerning amount of time on Tacoma World later I read a list of common issues with Gen 1's and decided to remove the heat shield. Exact same fracture in the same place! Finally found the problem AND a great video that shows how to fix it. Thank you so much, really appreciate the content.

Since you're listing what size sockets your using, have you considered using swivel sockets? Yeah, I know they're expensive. However, they'll make tackling this job that much easier. You can get them in either impact or chrome.

If you round a bolt you can always TRY to put a smaller socket on it with a hammer(preferably 12pt) and take an impact to it. Sometimes that will be just enough to get it loose. On the manifold I understand the “want to” and reasoning in repairing it, but dollars to donuts that thing will crack again in another spot. If you can afford it I always say buy a new one or hit the junkyard for one.

I had both Catalytic Converters (OEM CARB complaint) replaced on my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder in 2015. The check engine light recently turned on (P0420 Bank 1). It turns off by itself at times, but then a few days later it returns. Cant be a gas cap and I dont think its bad fuel (I stick to Chevron, Shell, 76, Mobil, etc).

kudos on saving a lot of money on the universal cat and making it fit...Just wondering though, wouldn't it have been better to fix the exhaust leak first? Just thinking the exhaust leak could throw the 02 sensors off therefore throwing a false 420 code..MIGHT not have needed a cat yet. 9 times out of 10 a 420 code does result in the cat being bad, but usually there isn't an exhaust leak that big. It'd be awesome to know if sealing that leak alone would have taken care of the 420 code

interesting to see how long the weld will last on the cast iron manifold ? at 250 if it last another 50K that's all you need =) (? best to drill a hole to stop the crack and then blazing it instead of welding it? )

Peace !!!

lyon65 hi, thank you for watching my videos. When was the last time you replace your spark plugs? If spark plugs is fooled up. It could cause that code to come up because the fuel isn’t burning completely. It can be too much fuel burning in the car. To know for sure which is bad cat. You need to go and get it diagnosed at a dealer or at a good shop. The have the scan tool to read the temperature of the catalytic if it working correctly.
@lyon65

Hi Angel thanks for your reply ; I got this van from my sister in law because she did not want o deal whit fixing the minivan, so she gave to my wife so I can fix it. all begun when the van start failing and my sister in law have a mechanic perform a tune up, he change spark plugs, coil pack, cables , etc. but still having a rough idle so I checked the cable between the coil pack and the spark plug and it was not having spark on 2 cylinders, so I send the computer to test and they find a coil burn inside. so they fixed it and after installed it again on the minivan it runs great now, but the funny thing I got the code but no light on my dashboard, scanner show all monitors ready except for the catalytic and also I heard a little boom boom noise between the manifold and the air filter make me thinks gases trying to escape trough the air filter since they can't do it trough the cat on the engine. I tried the the temperature and both are very similar on the cat under the vehicle but since they are 2 cat I'm not sure which one to change. and I really need to fix this to pass smog check and get the sticker its been 3 months trying to fix it I'll appreciate your help if you guide me to do it.

lyon65 I think the catalytic is bad from the misfire cylinders. Catalytics are very expensive. To try to pass smog. You can try this. It worked for me. Watch this video I did on a Corolla to pass smog. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lc56hsimstPMgH0.html

Everything looks good in video, but I can't figure out how you welded the cast iron exhaust manifold. Can someone clarify this for me?

when you get to the point where you cant remove the manifold that's where you're suppose to start cussing like a sailor and open up another beer - works for me
