Who is Sparkfire? Contrary to popular belief, Flamepaw doesn't have one of the most original stories in A Starless Clan. And it all stems back to its harmful roots in gender bias.

Warriors (Warrior Cats) is a series of novels based on the adventures and drama of multiple Clans of feral cats created by Victoria "Vicky" Holmes. The series is primarily set in a fictional forest, and later by a lake, in which fights and disputes over territory often occur between the groups: ThunderClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, WindClan, and SkyClan as well as StarClan, the Dark Forest (The Place of No Stars), and BloodClan. Published by HarperCollins and edited by Working Partners (now owned by Coolabi), Warriors is written by authors Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry, as well as others, under the collective pseudonym Erin Hunter: beginning with their first book "Into the Wild" in 2003. Tui T. Sutherland, another writer for the series, also went on to create the Wings of Fire novels and manga. In 2021, an official ROBLOX game by the name of "Warrior Cats: Ultimate Edition" (WCUE) was released finally growing the franchise beyond the original books with much success on TikTok. The Warrior Cats fandom is deeply rooted in animation, art, drawings, OCs (original characters), ships (shipping), animation memes, and various Warrior Cats PMV (s), AMV (s), animatics, and Warrior Cats MAP / MAPs (multi-animator projects) among other forms of animated media. Some of its most popular characters include Firestar (Fireheart, Firepaw, Rusty), Graystripe, Ravenpaw, Sandstorm, Spottedleaf, Cinderpelt, Tallstar, Jake, Swiftpaw, Brightheart, Cloudtail, Bluestar, Yellowfang, Snowkit, Mapleshade, Leopardstar, Crookedstar, Hawkfrost, Tigerstar (Tigerclaw), Ashfur, Sol, Scourge, Mothwing, Crowfeather, Feathertail, Frecklewish, Squirrelflight (Squirrelstar), Leafpool, Bramblestar (Brambleclaw), Jayfeather, Hollyleaf, Dovewing, Ivypool, Lionblaze, Rootspring, Shadowsight, Bristlefrost, Nightheart, Sunbeam, Frostpaw, and Alderheart. And for more than 20 years, its fame (and respective infamy) has brought fans and countless readers alike together from across the world.

Because I've been seeing an increasing amount of comments following along the lines of "it makes sense because they're feral cats" and "they're just following natural instinct" or what have you for whatever reason(s), I would like to direct you to these quotes from Vicky Holmes, the creator of Warrior Cats: "what I really wanted was to write about small furry humans with four legs. So I’m afraid you have to blame me for bending the laws of nature." warriors.fandom.com/wiki/Erin_Hunter_Chat_6 "I must confess I wasn’t very keen at first because I don’t read fantasy and although I love all animals… I’m more of a dog person. But once I started working with the characters, I realized I could give them human issues" warriorcats.com/content/article/who-is-erin-hunter Do with this information as you will 👍

I cannot believe people are legitimately trying to justify harmful and misogynistic stereotypes by saying that because female cats in real life experience heat cycles (something that is never even mentioned or a factor in this magic cat society), this means that the very anthropomorphized she-cats (women) in Warrior Cats are “made” to be mothers, and that is their only purpose and endgame. Baffling how people can just say that, and not immediately see what’s wrong with that take.

THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT HOW ONCE A SHE-CAT BECOMES A QUEEN SHES JUST A QUEEN NOW. An example of this, which is almost identical to Sparkpelt’s situation, is turtletail’s. she once was praised for her talents but as soon as she had kits that well.. almost all she was at that point, just not as bad as sparkpelt since turtle tail still was written to have some sort of personality and well.. what the books would probably consider “a purpose” for a queen.

Another one is Ivypool. She *was* a good character (still is but I liked her better in Omen of The Stars) who was written well with good character development. Once Omen of The Stars was done and she fulfilled her purpose what happened? Fernsong basically comes out of nowhere (nothing against him) and she becomes a queen. And instead of having a role in the recent series like Lionblaze or Jayfeather she's just shoved into the background. Yeah she made an appearance with some dialogue a couple of times but that's it really. Or Hollyleaf. Except she was just...killed off and forgotten about.

The sexism in warriors is abismal. I actually made a joke to myself after reading Starless Clan (Spoilers for Light in the Mist btw) “As far as female protagonists who used to be important but are now barely noticeable background characters, Bristlefrost seems to have gotten an upgrade! Yup, she’s taken the standard from ‘Stuck in the nursery and unable to have a personality’ to ‘extremely dead! Like holy shit! You can’t get deader than this!’” Edit: Just thought I’d clarify real quick. I’m not mad that they killed Bristlefrost. It just gives off a bad vibe when female protagonists end up as either Mother Figures, Forgettable Background Characters, Squirrelflight, and now just straight up Dead. Even if the roles were reversed and all the boys ended up getting their personalities snatched, I’d still be miffed.

Tbh, a interesting character becoming a parent can be an amazing story change and a refresher. But 80% of the time, it just causes that character to be pushed into the bg by their kids or worse, turned into a hollow husk only meant to act as a parent figure. And I genuinely hate it when that happens, Spatkpelt had so much potential it was crazy, same with many other female warriors characters. As evidence has shown, people love characters who don’t get turned into a parental husk, but instead still have their own interesting identity, this is probably the reason Mapleshade is loved so much in my opinion. She continued to be an interesting character with motives after having kits, and that’s what made her stand out, she’s different. I really hope warriors and other book series learn their lesson with this character type

Same with Leafpool and Squirrelflight. Both had/ raised children but stayed pretty much the same and said children influenced their own arc just as much as they influenced their children's. Moth Flight also kept a relatively interesting arc after kitting; let's not forget Bluestar either. Her whole kitten situation was more of a device to delve deeper into her character and it was more of a "this she-cat happened to have kits" than "SHE IS A CERTIFIED MOTHER." But now so many she-cats have kittens after their first arcs are finished. There's some where it definitely fits; Poppyfrost is a very maternal cat, Dovewing is also quite motherly really and it makes sense for her to have kittens (although a little bit later). She doesn't change much from her original characterization either. But then there's Ivypool. Holy snap, she has the biggest asexual energy in the series, having absolutely no interest in anybody, no crushes, nothing - although I do think her ending up with Fernsong is a very cute match because he's more feminine than most love interest toms and even stayed in the nursery, them remaining kitless would've been really cool. Who else do we have? Blossomfall? Haven't heard squat from her after becoming generic queen no. 55. Violetshine stayed half decent because like with Dovewing and Poppfrost, it's kinda in her nature to go have kittens. I'm literally glad Hollyleaf died before she could birth some main character offspring for another series. She went down in glory and thank god she did. The atrocity that is she-cats in dawn of the clans is such a mess as well. Most of them die horribly, often times it has something to do with kittens (pregnant, dying right after birth, dying while rescuing her kittens), and the ones that do survive (like Violet Dawn, Star Flower, Slate) are all love interests that have kittens for no real reason other than "omg our main character boy has babies now".

@@Anne-wf1vo Honestly I do think Blossomfall shouldnt have had kittens due to previous mommy issues due to Millie being, well, Millie during Briarlight's lifetime. Though I guess we MUST have Greystripe descendants to ship with future Firestar descendants because that sure went well with Firestar descendants x Tigerstar descendants /s

I have been thinking about how she-cats lose their personality when they become queens, especially in the case of Blossomfall. It’s so disappointing.

It’s Interesting how Nightheart specifically points out that ALDERHEART had issues with being compared to Firestar, despite the fact that Sparkpelt was the one constantly compared to him. Alderheart’s anxiety came from being the son of a leader and a deputy specifically, and he was even confirmed to look more like squirrelflight, while his sister looked like Firestar. Even if the comparison was positive, iirc, she was _Constantly_ having her achievements chalked up to the fact that she’s Firestar’s grandkid - despite the fact that if her bloodline had anything to do with it, it most certainly would have come from Sandstorm, the greatest hunter in Thunderclan. To be clear, this would be a fascinating conflict if the the authors were going for an unreliable narrator approach, which they _seemed_ to be going for.. except they’re really bad at it and keep framing nightheart as Correct anyway. He gets called out for going against tradition but that’s about it. It would be really interesting if Nightheart’s inability to empathize with Sparkpelt came from his abandonment issues instead of the writing team just not really caring about her. It would be really cool if the two could bond over their shared burden, even if they never quite become mother and son. It would also recontextualize Sparkpelt’s insistence on Nightheart’s achievements being from Firestar as leftover trauma from constantly having her achievements credited to him as well. They could make this work, is what I’m saying, but I doubt they will.

Even with female writers for warriors, we still get this horrible gender bias of she-cats with interesting and independant personalities and stories become boring and bland mothers and loose ALL of their personality and hobbies, solely olny thinking about their mates and kits This isnt even the olny major problem in warriors, theres way more, but the main writers dont care. Either way theres still so many fans of warriors and continue supporting and buying books, which just continues a stupid cycle of the erins making a new book, people buying it no matter how bad it is, and advertising it by making content of it like animations etc. It feels like its never gonna end.. Hopefully one day whoever’s in charge of these books will finally understand how to listen to criticism. Whenever they do something wrong (except in the instance of the transphobic author that was writing for Survivors), they either completely ignore it or actively make an effort to just not include it in the books anymore. All they have to do is apologize or just show us that these things are bad in future books and yet they never do. And you’re definitely not alone in being upset at this either; trust me. Maybe someday they’ll change, but I wish that Kate Cary and them would just abandon HarperCollins all-together, to be honest. It’s sad, really. Yes, I am an editor! And thank you! I never really noticed the gender problem in Warriors, but that's probably a me thing. I tend to need to be hit upside the head with a clue-by-four with stuff like that, and even then I don't always get it (the religious symbolism in Chronicles of Narnia and the anti-religion themes in His Dark Materials were not subtle and I still managed to miss them completely when I was a kid). I haven't read any of the books beyond Omen of the Stars, and now after having watched a bunch of Sunnyfall's videos and this one, I'm probably not going to go back to it. As someone who is both aromantic and asexual and who really, really doesn't like kids, it's annoying to me that the vast majority of the she-cats in Warriors end up with mates and kits.
@Hawkkz
@Hawkkz 2 жыл бұрын
Don't be so hard on yourself. I didn't even realize how huge of a problem it was until I watched Sunnyfall's video and spoke with her -- and, at that point, I had already had this script drafted before too. I just didn't understand that it was *that* bad. It's honestly kind of crazy. After Omen of the Stars, there's quite literally only, like, one protagonist example of someone that doesn't want to have kits who isn't a medicine cat, but, if I'm being real with you, that one still feels like one of those things that could either change in an instant or was probably forgotten about thanks to background character irrelevancy. Even when this character was in the focus, though, the way that it was written was more kind of about how they 'weren't ready' instead of it, you know, *actually* being a choice. I hope that Warriors will learn from what they've done and I pray to God that the female protagonist in the newest series won't end up in the same position, but I completely understand how you feel. Thank you for the comment ❤️

This video was wonderful, quality content. You managed to address an issue in a clear but perfect way. I enjoy Nightheart's character since it's a breath of fresh air in the series. It also digs deeper into the family of Firestar and their obsession with "keeping the lineage" Leafpool's side of the family isn't ignored but it isn't represented really; because none of them inherited Firestar's 'flame-coloured fur' I like to think the cat who started this obsession, was Bramblestar. He was extremely loyal to Firestar, and probably saw him as a father-like figure. Squirrelflight, being well his mate, probably jumped on board with the idea. I don't believe it was discussed, it was just perhaps comforting to them; so it subconsciously just happened. Sparkpelt was the embodiment of the perfect child. She had flaws, of course; but nothing that stud her training or skills. I was rather bothered when she became a queen and her personality went down the drain. Larksong had greatly impacted her life, and she wasn't able to be there as a mother properly for her kits. Which isn't of course her fault. Nightheart is definitely villianizing his mother in a sense, although I'm pretty sure it's unintentional. Nightheart understands why, but at the current state of time; he envies his sister's closer relationship with his mother. There's definitely favourites being pointed out. Finchlight is preferred because she's a tortoiseshell, ginger and black and likely green-eyed. She resembles Sparkpelt more, however Nightheart does not. He is the spitting image of his father, although I do cannon him with structural face and bod of Firestar. Indicating his resemblance to Firestar, but not in the same way. Sparkpelt probably has fear of her son, because of his appearance; it brings back memories. I would like Sparkpelt's character to be explored more, and Nightheart to be enlightened on the fact that yes, his mother does love him. If Nightheart had a she-cat protagonist that was by his side, and had character development; even past being a queen. I'm sure that would be a step in the right direction for the series. I dislike how she-cats are treated, I know, of course we've had many she-cat protagonists. But they all fall in line with the common queen role eventually. There's nothing wrong with wanting a family, but a she-cat isn't just created to be the love interest or just to end up in a nursery; producing babies for the rest of her life. That's why I liked Hollyleaf. She didn't want kits. Yet that was viewed as an odd thing. I'm an asexual person, so seeing a character not want kits but still have a mate; would be so freshing. Or perhaps a she-cat character that just doesn't want a mate? Or perhaps they actually keep their personality for once and don't fade into a boring, background character. Yes, they aren't the main protagonist maybe; but having Sparkpelt be explored more in ASC would probably help understand her character more. She just feels like she's being pointed out as a bad mother, however she's mentally scarred so????

Thank you so much! I'm also enjoying Nightheart as of late too. That's an interesting head canon! The closest thing we have right now to a character not wanting kits or anything like that is Twigbranch. Even still, she's kind of banished too far into the background anyway which sucks. I hope that ASC finally gives Sparkpelt some much needed character development again. Nightheart being an unreliable narrator in terms of how he thinks about her could get very interesting if it's done better than just blatantly making her look like a naggy mom outside of, like, at the very beginning of the book where their relationship was formal and distant. It could be an incredible dynamic. I appreciate the comment!

@@dopaminedi I agree, she-cats are wasted. I just want a she-cat protagonist who is badass and stays badass even if she becomes a mother. Or maybe, not have kits at all? Like a tom character falling for a she-cat who seems to show leadership capabilities, and is extremely responsible but still possess flaws. Like I know that Hollyleaf, Ivypool and Squirrelflight resemble that - but it hasn't been that bluntly obvious. Squirrelflight was always supposedly wrong for being right, even if she solved an issue - she still had to apologize and Bramblestar would punish her for it. Ivypool, was also seen in the wrong most of the time - and yes, she was, but she isn't stupid. Hollyleaf, was seen in the wrong in some occasions, like why is it that she-cats are always wrong and tom's who are the good protagonists aren't? I want a badass warrior she-cat who can be wrong, but doesn't stand for mockery or degradation by her peers if she breaks the code to help. Every character has flaws, that's what makes a character a character. Also this character wouldn't be just a pretty face, she obsesses over honing out her skills as a warrior and is capable of doing so. What the Erin Hunter team should do, is take advantage of the sexism in warrior cats. Because, the warrior code was redone - so why can't they point out the obvious sexism in warrior cats? Like she-cats must have kits! Or you should have a mate! She-cats can become leader, they can be warriors but at some point - it's all over. I mean, heck, Bluestar couldn't keep her kits because she was about to be leader - and you apparently can't balance both?? You get my drift?

And he never even considered that he maybe was named after his eyecolor or something, not to mention he never asked but assumed. Warrior characters have this big problem that the just can't communicate, they just assume stuff and then most of the problems are born. And there was a big thing about Sparkpelt in Squirrelflight's hope that you didn't even touch upon (maybe for the spoilers reasons). Many times warriors were critisized that shecats were killed only as a tool to explore tom's emotions and motivating them / moving plot along. Here the roles were completly reversed and she went threw the worst of the worst. I see it as her beeing painted as the perfect warrior with a perfect life but then everything goes wrong in a split second. Because she is NOT a chosen prophecy one or anything. But she recovers later, because she is strong and has support from her family... well from her brother, cousins and mum, her dud sucks. She should've been the point of view character but sadly wasn't... She really needed a novela more than her mom a superedition but for HC it's all about popularity of characters not their potential. Squirrelflight doesn't wish to be like her because of the gender roles, she looks back at the moments after having kits as the only happy times in her relationship with brambleclaw and doesn't know how else to fix this toxic mess they have. She most improtantly wants to feel young again and that's what she envies the most. And feel needed. the whole point of the book is that she realises that she doesn't need to make babies to be usefull, to help others, to be a great asset to her clan. And honeslt she is the most interesting part of Flamepaw's chapters for me. And seeing how she tries but her son just doesn't want to let her in because of his own assumptions of what others feel, want or think. And she is not a natural parent she doesn't really has muc of the instinct but is not a beat up mum (like some in the warriors) just some cat who is not that good in it. Unlike so many other shecats who after birth just BOOM change their personality to "mum". She seems like the last character to make the argument about sexism in the regard of having kits. There is just too many characters in Thunderclan to develop all the ones with potential especially as there seems to be a requirement that only new protags can be POVs in the main series, so we are left with scratches of undeveloped stories that need to be forgotten because there is a bunch of new protagonists that need the ground up development now. I think that she's a be a way better protagonist than her brother I feel. But we just had to have a medicine cat protagonist in Vision of Shadows... for some reason... and in every series... for some reason. I agree that she was robbed of her story, but I also see that maybe HC were afraid shed be too much like Squirrelflight (who is one of the faces of the franchise) and pushed her to the background not to have another Firestar clone in the frontline again, so soon after his death. And when they thought it was time to revisit the idea of legacy they couldn't use any older generation characters because "THE RULES" so they had to put it awkwardly in her sons paws... Hot take: Squirrelflights hope should've been Sparpelt's book. I kinda don't like Flamepaw as a character anyway, am more invested in Frostpaw's story as for now.
@bananacrispies
@bananacrispies 2 жыл бұрын
I'm also confused because I wonder if they didn't want to legacy name Sparkpelt because they planned on giving Alderheart the legacy name it would've been boring to have two cats in the same litter be legacy named. Maybe HC turned it down because they'd rather the protagonist be legacy named. I don't think Sparkpelt's story was taken away when it was Alderheart's story, not hers. She lost a legacy name, that's it. I think some of these stretches calling things like this sexism is making me less and less interested in the books because the Fandom just leaps on the authors/publishers/editors being racist, homophobic, sexist, and any other term under the sun.

You would be right in the fact that I didn't include the stuff about Larksong due to spoilers. While I think that the way their relationship was framed in the context of the book was portrayed horribly, what Sparkpelt went through with him was easily the best part about Squirrelflight's Hope. I was genuinely upset for her. The way that she reacted to it was incredibly relatable. And I was glad to see her recover too. I would love to see a novella for her going over it or highlighting some of the more underutilized aspects of her character in general. I agree with you about the gender roles. My point in that example was to contrast the portrayal of her character going forward from how she was introduced, but I should've said something specifically about how I thought this was wrong. The way Bramblestar acted that whole book was absolutely atrocious. And they should've really cemented that it was entirely not okay. By having Squirrelflight envy Sparkpelt in that way in the context that she still wants to continue her relationship with Bramblestar (even wanting to have more kits with him) puts absolutely no weight on his actions and all but writes them off. And only because "she loves him" or something. Like that's supposed to mean more than literally being gaslighted and manipulated in a relationship. Thank you for bringing this up. I can totally agree with the comparisons to Squirrelflight, but with the developments she was given in AVoS and Squirrelflight's Hope, I think she can become an entirely different character given the proper attention. Her treatment of SkyClan in AVoS and the heartbreak she went through with Larksong shows us that not every descendant of Firestar is entirely perfect nor that they are entitled to have as equally of great of lives. I love Squirrelflight, but I just don't see them being all too similar. Thank you for the input! I'm glad that I read it.
@Hawkkz
@Hawkkz 2 жыл бұрын
@@bananacrispies You bring up a great point, but I would have to simply disagree at the generalization here. No part of AVoS exactly *had* to be entirely Alderheart's story: that much, I believe, is pretty clear from their decision to include both Twigbranch and Violetshine as POV characters despite barely appearing in the first book and how they ultimately shifted the direction of the story towards their end by the conclusion of the arc. The whole "Sparkfire" thing was more of an example to show the inequality in the story development rather than to just complain that she wasn't written how I would've liked her to be. And, given the statistics that I brought up at the end of the video, I think this is absolutely a conversation that we should be having regardless of what we think of the characters. Ignoring any sign of a bias in anything only serves to perpetuate the problem and may lead to a far greater conflict in the future. We, as a community, need to learn to be more accepting of having these discussions. No part about it means that you have to hate the books or not support the people that are writing them (though it's okay to think that way if you want), but that doesn't mean we should just pretend that none of this exists especially when it's backed by hard evidence. You can absolutely disagree with me about Sparkpelt, but, given these unequal statistics, we should really start to question why these decisions are being made in the first place. Thank you for the input.

@@Hawkkz Bramblestar sucks and the fact that it was not pointed out is so infuriating. Not to mention The Broken Code was telling us how needed and awesome he is that it was nauseating. And like 70% of the emotional impact the books tried to make was relaying on anyone carring about him but NO ONE DID XD What a fail. Scenes of Bramblestar in the newest arc tho, seem to indicate that writers got SOME of our feedback and are planning to push him aside (let's hope). . I didn't say that Squirrelflight and Sparkpelt ARE too symilar but I think that in the development stages for the AVOS the HP might have been worried about it (as I said they are all about marketing, so putting another firestar clone on the cover was not desirable for them at the time). I hadn't read the article you discussed before, but it's so wild in contrast to... how Nightheart is portrayed? His poor hunting (as a result to him trying to show off too much/do risky maneuvers) held him back from being a warrior. He's not shown to be resourceful, and he's sure as hell not particularly kindhearted? He lacks compassion for Sparkpelt and doesn't seem to have any interest in the perspectives of other cats. If that's how they wanted him to be portrayed, they gave us an entirely different cat. Anyway, thanks for this vid. I'm glad a lot of fans are starting to recognize the gender bias in warriors, but still a decent number who take warriors at a very face value. Nightheart says Sparkpelt is a bad mother, so she is. Nightheart says he has a burden, so he does. Nightheart is frustrated and bitter, so he's traumatized. There's a lack of willingness to engage on a deeper level with the rest of the context of the series, gender, etc. I hope videos like this will encourage more people to think a little more critically about the books!
@Hawkkz
@Hawkkz 2 жыл бұрын
The way that they dropped this article showcases just how unorganized and mismanaged the drafting for these books must really be. It's extremely obvious that they plan these entire character's arcs out beforehand instead of allowing them to evolve naturally alongside the plot. Warriors too often confuses character development for plot progression (specifically in characters that they usually deem as 'not important enough for this book') and I'm honestly kind of tired of it being like this especially when, on the other hand, it's either this or completely reactionary storytelling with no protagonist ambition or drive. In no world should a character in a book for a series that takes several years for their arc to conclude already have their entire development timeline laid out like that. And then to share it with us without letting us see if this happens ourselves? Like, how ridiculous can it get? It's like they think we're all stupid or something, I swear. Thank you for the comment! Sorry I went off a bit there, but you make a fantastic point! I completely agree.

Hollyleaf is one of the most beloved characters in the entire series. There was maybe some inconsistency in how she was written over the course of the third arc, as it felt like the authors were trying many different things at once, but ultimately her story still has a lot of great moments. Meanwhile, Lionblaze is despised by most of the fanbase for having no personality except anger. If someone among the three is overshadowed it's clearly him. This has potential… if it weren’t so obviously putting everyone out of character, Sparkpelt and Squirrelflight yelling at him for his name, and Bramblestar changing it to give him zero agency (although Nightheart probably likes it better).

I don't understand why people look so damn deep into this. I don't care if the characters were written like humans. I don't care if there's some kind of unconscious bias. Can't there just be innocent fun things in the world without people finding fault and accusing people of having bad views? Can't previously feisty cats become affectionate mothers completely invested in what they're doing? The world doesn't keep spinning if new life doesn't begin, and all this hatred of motherhood and giving up personal things for the sake of your kids is ridiculous. I'm disappointed Sparkpelt isn't how she used to be, but that doesn't make her story harmful.

I think Warrior Cats has been going the wrong way for a long time. I'd like to see more of one character than three new cats every season. Especially the eighth season is cruel in this case. Sunbeam's storyline is just a boring, cliché-like love story. Nightheart is often compared to Firestar and for no reason. As you said in the video, this should have been in season six. I don't like Nightheart's personality because he doesn't fit as a character overall. It doesn't fit in with his childhood either. After Sparkpelt's trauma, they play together and suddenly their relationship is bad a few months later. In the first book of the eighth season, Firestar is mentioned more often than in the entire sixth season, and this makes no sense. But the authors have also simply destroyed the potential of Sparkpelt. From the brilliant hunter, who should be the main character next to Alderheart, to the totally in love kitten, who is interested in nothing but her relationship. She could have been a good mentor to Twigbranch, but her cliché relationship makes her the worst mentor after Ashfur. This mistake could have been corrected in the eighth season, in which Sparkpelt was used instead of Sunbeam. The clans have fewer and fewer female leaders, and Sparkpelt would be the best choice to steer against that. Bramblestar's trauma would be a perfect way to put Sparkpelt in the limelight, but no, it's got to be a stubborn boy. Greetings from Germany

I can take a lot of shitty writing and dumb mistakes from this series, but when they start going sexist it's too much. We already had to live with the pedophilia and that horrible redtail retcon. It's getting harder and harder to like this series, even as a guilty pleasure. I sure hope the finale of the entire franchise is decent. The people who actually care about the story (ghost writers, editors) deserve way more agency, they deserve the chance to do something good because their ideas are often cool but then Harper Collins appears and gets all controlling about it.

This is so frustrating, especially when most of the readers are women, as far as I know. I don't know who this Harpen is, but it's obvious he has a lot of internalized sexism, if he believes that a female character can't have the same role as a male character, and also Spark's character just ends up being another queen, with nothing interesting to do afterwards.

Did you even put Squirreflight's comment on Sparkpelt in context with what was happening in the book? Squirreflight's situation with Bramblestar was SO bad she thought she would never be happy again, of course at that point she was envious of her daughter's happiness with her partner, and not about her skills. Especially as Squirrelflight didn't have to prove anything anymore regarding her skills. Remember that while the books are not written in first person, we're still seeing through the MC perspective. Sparkpelt was treated HORRIBLY in this book, in an extremely sexist way, but not because the book chose to talk about her happiness with her partner instead of her skills. Also it couldn't have been Sparkpelt's story because she was this very talented cat right from the begining to be in opposition with Alrderheart. So pressure from her lineage wouldn't have been as heavy for her.
@Hawkkz
@Hawkkz 2 жыл бұрын
You can't possibly expect me to fit an entire book's worth of context into one example for a video that isn't even focused on that book, right? At no point in the video did I say that any of this wasn't true and me using one quote isn't trying to derail the conversation when all I'm doing is trying to analyze a specific character's development in conjunction with what happened in the text at that moment compared to how they were written in books prior-- not about how their story evolved specifically after that one point in that one book. I included that quote just to introduce that Sparkpelt was in a relationship. And you can disagree with what I had to say about it, sure, but that doesn't mean that I said something that I didn't even comment on once in the video. I appreciate the critical angle, but please don't let that distract you from everything else. Thank you.

Yall act as if toms don't get any nonsense in the series. What about poor Reedwhisker, descendent of the iconic bluestar and the son of mistystar, but what was he?, nothing but mommies little helper, for gosh sakes, he even died just moments after she did, like he couldn't exist without her. I mean what about the cliché male stereotypes of being big, angry idiots that have no emotion other than just grrr me fight, me kill, me take over the forest? Could sparkpelt have had more development, absolutely, but guess what, the latest arc wasn't about her, it was about her mother squirrelflight, so no harm done. Is there a gender issue in Warriors 🤷‍♂️ perhaps, but saying there's sexism is taking things to the extreme and seems more as a way to be spiteful twords men/males toms, whatever, which is ironic, because that behavior is blatantly sexist. Iam not trying to sound so whiney, but iam just worried that this constant need to pound the drum of sexism in Warriors will actually make the community somewhat sexist itself, just against males.
@Hawkkz
@Hawkkz 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand how you think that I, as a male myself, would sit there and make these claims unless I didn’t believe that they were true. Sexism in this series absolutely does more than just effect women, and Sunnyfall does a great job at explaining that in their video, but the disparity between men and women is extremely obvious to see when you look at just how uneven the amount of content is for either gender. And the point of this video wasn’t to discuss how that inadvertently effects men. Choosing to ignore gender discrepancy or any indicator of a bias even with the most fundamental statistics in mind blatantly forgets that, regardless of what anyone feels about it, there will always be more male content and male representation in this series good *or* bad. Numbers don’t lie: it’s not a preference, it’s a fact. I will admit, I myself wasn’t completely convinced until I watched Sunnyfall’s video. I really recommend that you do so as well.
@TheAshfurApologist
@TheAshfurApologist 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hawkkz I mean, can't men be sexist in the same way the community claims the Erin's are? And I actually have seen Sunnyfall's video, iam a very big fan of hers. And I also saw how quickly that video blew up, and I just feel as if it could be a catalyst for disliking characters or storylines simply because it revolves around a tom. This has been an issue in the community for a very long time, it just seems like it's being discussed more and more, and could potentially be very impressionable for new/young members of the Fanbase in a negative anti male way. I mean, iam a guy, and I never let a cats gender get in the way of how I felt about them, and outside of ashfur, my favorite characters are all She-cats. Maybe iam overreacting or being sensitive, but that's just how I feel on this matter, iam not trying to come across as rude or ignorant about any of this.
@Hawkkz
@Hawkkz 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheAshfurApologist I am absolutely not trying to tell you that I think that you should hate male characters simply because they're male and in no way do I say this or endorse this in my video. And nor will I ever. Saying that something is sexist doesn't inherently mean that it has anything to do with another sex or gender either. Nothing about this is "anti-male" and trying to pretend that it is (or that it will be) so greatly detracts from the heart of the issue that it's just shifting the blame onto something else. You don't have to agree with my opinions and you can continue to read Warriors even if this stuff still exists (as I myself will as well), but it is simply a fact, backed by evidence taken from the books, that male characters have more content than female characters. And by a completely unequal margin too. It's your choice to decide, not mine. But I frankly don't appreciate the way that you're labeling this. We can always just agree to disagree.
@TheAshfurApologist
@TheAshfurApologist 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hawkkz Fair enough. Maybe it's my fault for not seeing the big problem, gender never played a role in the series for me, if it had, my favorite characters would all be toms. I just feel like we should focus more on how a character is actually developed, rather than if their male or female. Like if nightheart ends up having a very well crafted character arc, I just hope the community enjoys it, rather than just dwelling on the thought that this should be his mother's story instead. Ntm, we have both sunbeam and frostpaw as main story protagonist, squirrelflight is also still at the forefront of everything going forward, and who knows which other She-cats will have a role to play.

I want to make 2 points here 1.There is in no way they were trying to be sexist here, and for the most part you can only be sexist when doing it on purpose,and yes you can be sexist without thinking you are,but I don't think someone instilled the female writers with the idea that women should have less screentime 2.The lack of female screentime is on purpose,because it makes sense Female *cats* main purpose are for kits, now I do see where you could think 'Well they could still have a storyline afterwards' but look at big cat lives Mothers do still hunt,but only because the men stay in the area protecting their cubs But now it's the other way around,men go out and hunt,the mothers protect their kits It's just how they're used to,they aren't human characters,they don't have thought beyond what they've known,and yes they do have some form of sentience,but I don't think the writers wanted to make them as independent as humans can be
@trickylai2652
@trickylai2652 2 жыл бұрын
That logic does not make much sense at all regarding females having less of a role to play, warriors is pretty much written to be as unrealistic as possible when it comes to cats, to the point where they could quite easily be furry little humans. They don't age the same way, don't sleep most of the day, cats are not monogamous, I'm pretty sure it's mentioned they struggle to see in the dark, they have doctors, etc. And I mean in reality, male cats main purpose is also technically for kits... But the books aren't and going to be about every dude jumping immediately to have babies with the closest available lady, or them constantly fighting to do so with as many she-cats as possible. That would be "realistic" and that would be really lame. And the big cat comparison doesn't exactly work either. I can only really think of lions where that would apply, most big cats are very solitary and the mothers will do literally everything, including fighting off males, because they will quite often kill cubs. So that's no excuse to have females be treated as "lesser" either.
@Hawkkz
@Hawkkz 2 жыл бұрын
I highly recommend that you watch Sunnyfall's video on gender bias for a much more in-depth explanation. And, on your second point, that is entirely not true. Vicky Holmes herself has been on record to have said that the characters are just "furry humans with four legs." She has also said "once I started working with the characters, I realized I could give them human issues." The authors' intent was absolutely not to make these cats act as they would in the wild otherwise almost entire clans would be female just like real-life cat colonies. There is no excuse for sexism or gender bias in this series at all and it holds no relation to the real world. You can find both of these quotes in full in the links below. warriors.fandom.com/wiki/Erin_Hunter_Chat_6 warriorcats.com/content/article/who-is-erin-hunter
