FLOODED TO FABULOUS! EXTREME BATHROOM MAKEOVER ON A BUDGET! DIY Board and Batten + Minimalist Style
Over the past 9 months we’ve been fixing up our late nineties early-2000s builder grade home. Our DIY projects have ranged from quick budget-friendly facelifts to larger-scale 180 overhauls and full-gut remodels.
Today, we’re working on our guest bathroom which we recently discovered was flooded by a small broken faucet pipe under our bathroom sink. What started as a one-day project to give it a nice refresh quickly turned into a full blown remodel from top to soggy bottom.
And while water damage and unexpected repairs are always a bummer, my husband Weston and I like to find the silver lining in any situation. We’re grateful for the opportunity to work together as a couple on another home-improvement project and transform this outdated, plain Jane space into a beautifully minimalist, and warmly appointed bathroom for guests and our kids!
In this part one of a two part episode , We’re excited to try our hand at a couple of DIY projects we’ve never attempted before including a board and batten wainscoting wall!

Thank you, Michelle! I will say this confidence has grown with time. Early in our marriage we didn't attempt things because it was intimidating. But little by little we grew our skills and confidence!

No idea how I missed that Wes is an electrician all these years!!! My husband is an electrician as well and it is awesome🙌🏼 He tends to also be handy with a variety of other construction type tasks as a function of having to install or run electric. And it’s a fantastic trade during the ups and downs of almost any job market! We are about to redo our guest bathroom so this was super encouraging 😊

After 11 years, my husband and I are finally doing the same thing. Turning our house into a home 💛 we’ve done so much and this place finally feeling like OURS is so rewarding! As well as being able to do it ourselves and be a team.

My house was a never ending toilet saga last year 🤣 After replacing 3 toilets because of my children I love so dearly, we spent extra money on an industrial flush toilet. Best decision ever 🙈 I understand the excitement of an expensive toilet hahaha

I always love seeing repair work done by loving couples. It's a way to build memories and bond. My husband and I do things like this once in a while. We use the times to work on attitude improvement, communication skills, and just enjoying the intimate moments we get with each other. And gorgeous work you both did!! As the kids grow, I know they'll really appreciate the hard work their parents out into making their house into a home!! ❤️❤️❤️

Hey Natalie, I need you to know that I can't thank you enough for all your content. I suffer from MDE, GAD, PTSD amongst other things and it's been one of the weeks where I was in a slump of sorts and just didn't want/ feel like doing anything at all. Love the that Red home shirt!!!! My kids bathroom glass shower door came off the track and tried to fall on all three of my kids! My husband decided to check it out and when he stepped in, it SHATTERED!!!! So we have a curtain up now. 😜 So thankful the Lord watched over my kids when they were using it!

When we did our renos, we put in one piece and skirted toilets. Life changing. No crack to clean between tank and bowl.

We've been doing similar work (patching, taping,...) on our new to us home in Kentucky. I try to do the cutting in & hubby does the roller ING of paint! We've in two weeks finished 4 of 6 rooms of our place and are taking a break on the final two. We're staying with a cooler tones with mixed wood (light grey with blue tones), simple clean lines with traditional styled wood furniture & trims!

I shuddered during the water/mold discovery of your video. We had the exact same thing happen in an upstairs bathroom with double vanity 8 months ago. a lot of water leaked through the flooring to the laundry room below. LOTS of demo, remediation, renovation...that we needed the pros to do, because of our age and physical restrictions. this was completed about 2 months later! I so admire your work ethic, collaboration with hubby ( know it wasn't all shooting stars!). That project led us into a total of 5 months of total flooring removal, walls painted, fixtures etc. but it's all finished and we than God for seeing us through it all!

We had our house built & each time we do an upgrade/Reno we find all the short cuts our builder took. We have learned to build it into the Reno budget. It’s crazy. But I just love how y’all tackled the reno as a team!

Listening to you talk about unplanned decorating projects was like listening to myself complain before any project! Got to have it straight in my head first, prep takes forever, drop cloths are the worst, matching textures is a pain... The list goes on... Oh! My I totally get where you are coming from. My husband took a weekend vacation to do a tub and toilet redo. But it didn't happen that way.We are now in the middle of a full blown remodel of our bathroom. For the same reason we had a leak so bad that we also had to redo the whole floor and walls that had mold so we knew all we could do was to just strip it all a do a total redo.Our deal is my husband can only work on it now that his vacations over is on the weekends. So it's quite a deal.

Love this video! And perfect timing too, because we are in a similar boat, although not as urgent of a time frame. I made the mistake of pouring boiling water down our vanity sink and it cracked. So far, it’s not causing any major leaking, but it’s definitely a priority to replace the vanity. We also have some drywall patching and painting to do. Love your style and aesthetic choices!!

Thank you! But actually, We did this all while having our kids home full time. You see snippets of the project and many of them are of only one of us working there! That means the kids were being parented by the other spouse (or they were happily playing outside in the sunshine!)

I had a home and became to ill to maintain it on my own. Now that I am restored, God has promised to restore the time and all that the locusts has e eaten. The bathroom looks stunning already! It's funny what causes culture shock and seeing a bathroom with no waterproofing really set it off for me. In Australia you have to have waterproofing membrane under your tiles on your floor and behind your shower and sink to be compliant. It's to protect the structure when things like happen. I'm really enjoying your videos at the moment because we just bought our first home and they're giving me heaps of inspo.

The flooring has attached waterproofing on the bottom of it! And the back of the panels we installed on the wall also was treated with a waterproofing spray, I just forgot to mention that part!
