How I Do This Thing (Not A Tutorial) - The Project Bag Edition
On my last Flosstube episode, I shared a project bag that I made and some of you expressed interest in the construction and measurement details. My goal was to create a bag that fit my project kit preferences (essentially being able to carry around a whole bunch of stuff without it turning into a giant mess - hence the pocket and floss drop loop) and that would efficiently use the materials needed without many unused off-cuts or scraps. If this sounds like something you might want to make too, check it out.
First and foremost, I'd like to credit Jenn Crafts, who made the project bag tutorial that inspired me to start sewing again. The foundation of the bag I'm sharing today was built on her design and techniques.

When you pulled the zipper tab off the zipper I laughed for quite a while. I have been there, done that so many times! Great tutorial. I like the bigger size. Thank you.

Memories❤️ I love the sound of the Singer. Reminds me of sewing 4-H projects on my mom’s machine when I was young. I’m sure yours is newer then the old black one of moms.

I think it’s a 1956, it got a bit squeaky at the end but just needed a little oil again. Such good little machines. 😎

Love the little pocket space that you added to hold the tracker. I can even see adding a small zipper pocket towards the top or even on the back that would allow for extra needles or scissors or other smaller items to be placed inside while working on this. I will have to keep that in mind over the weekend as I have planned out time to hopefully cut some project bags for myself. Will keep some of your tips and tricks in mind when doing that.

Hi Michelle! I like the idea of an additional little zipper pocket for needles or scissors. I'm also hoping to make up some bags this week, have a few projects kitted with no bag to keep them in! Must remedy. :)

You did a wonderful job demonstrating your bags! I sew just for myself using JennCraft and Calico tutorials as well as others I have watched over the years. I use Soft and Stable from FQS. It adds a crispness to my bags which I like.

Suggest: I find it easier to carefully and slowly slide the cutting mat around when straightening the side of the bag. There is less slippage and less opportunities to slice yourself with the rotary cutter 😳 ask me how I know! Love the tab and inside pocket innovation- thank you so much for the posting 💕

Thank you so much Mary, that is a great tip! I actually want to get a cutting mat base that pivots (aka 'lazy susan' style). The camera setup I had in place to be able to record that top down view was VERY precarious so I had to limit mat and table movement or I got a wicked motion-sickness inducing wobble in the camera footage that took forever to subside.

Great tutorial! I love your fabrics together very pretty ! I like how you pressed your backing fabric for the binding without the vinyl on ! I use my seam ripper tip as a tool to keep my mitered corners tight when I’m getting to the corners. Love it with that pocket and tab ! I also got better with each bag I made ! Practice practice is the key !👍😂

You make the bags pretty much the way I do except I like to live on the edge. I press my sides for the binding with the vinyl in place; as long as you don't touch the vinyl with the iron I find it is fine. I also press with the iron (no finger pressing) one side half way then fold again and press, turn the bag a quarter turn, press the folded fabric into a 45 degree angle at one corner, then press that second side half way then the full way again pressing that miter. I find it makes a neat corner and the pressing helps it to stay in place. I just work my way around the bag one side at a time turning the bag one quarter turn. I have sewn all my life so I will one way or another figure out a way to get something made quicker. I also am cheap, so I use little metal binder clips to hold the binding in place. I do like the size you made your bags and the way you added the pocket and tab for a ring. I know that video was a lot of work and I am sure it will help many to have the confidence to make their own project bags. Great job!
