What Kyle said .... Oh my goodness, you’ve fallen down the hole hard on the machines and cabinets. I totally understand! I may have said this before, but my favorite part of buying a machine is sifting through the drawers and imagining the owner’s life. I acquired a White treadle last weekend along with a vintage Bernina (of which I know nothing about) from a lady who was downsizing all her treasures to move. We had such a lovely chat and she was so happy to find someone who she knew would appreciate the machines, that she practically gave them to me. I promised to find a deserving home for the Bernina and the treadle will stay with me. I will be bringing out and showing some of my treasures in upcoming videos. Thank you so much for the wonderful tribute to Barb, and for the lovely shout out for the BBDQAL and our channels. It’s much appreciated! Looking forward to seeing your machines set up!

Thank you Lori! I would love to see some of your collection. It really is humbling to go through drawers and boxes and tins and find little bits of personality. The woman who had the 15-91 seemed very kind and a bit quirky in the best way. Thanks again for hosting the BBDQAL, I can't wait to start.

I totally love everything about your flosstube videos. Your theme song from Jacob and your dad is so cute and clever. My dad would draw us kids dogs, cats and rabbits. They always looked alike except for their ears and tails...lol. My mom was a longtime sewist and had a singer that she purchased in 1959. She was self taught and sewed many of our clothes including prom dresses, one wedding dress and three bridesmaid dresses. Hearing how you treasure what is included in the machines you find is so touching. I would think the people who used those machines for years would be so happy that you now have their treasures. Your stitching is amazing and I look forward to seeing your next video.

OMG so cute about your dad's drawings. I mean, to be fair there are lots of dogs and cats that look like rabbits except for the ears and tails LOL. As for your mom, being self taught in the days before the internet (and especially YT) was quite a feat when you think about it. Thanks so much for being part of my little corner of floss tube.

Hi Joyce. SO well made. One machine that I found was barely turning over and it was simply a matter of carefully oiling the upper drive gears and letting them loosen up. If they are maintained properly they run well for ages.

Love the sewing machine stories! I love to collect old machines with stories. I bought my first one when I was about 18. I have several that were from family and friends, that once belonged to mothers or grandmothers, that passed them on to me. I have a friend that is cleaning out great-grands farm house and contacted me to bring me two machines in cabinets and old sewing items and pin cushions! I am excited! Love being a caretaker of past seamstresses beloved items!

I recently returned to cross stitching after several decades. I returned because of the Magical Mystery Tour. My first finish is Octopus's Garden. How simultaneously sad and glad I am to have found Blackbird Designs. My heart certainly goes out to Barb's extended and extensive family. On another note, I'm eliminating many of my belongings now - before I retire next year - because I have one child and I don't want my son to have to go through everything! Going from hoarder to minimalist! I donated many mementos of mine, my mother's and my grandmother's. Things I still can't let go of - our buttons, scissors, and needles as well as all of the sewing books and crochet patterns. I learned at a very early age how to sew my own clothes. Now I just can't get past the sticker shock of the cost of patterns and fabric to sew my own clothes again! This video really hit lots of chords with me! Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on the finish! I love that chart so much. It is such a shift that sewing your own clothing is more expensive than buying - when I was a little girl that was definitely not the case. Thank you for the thoughtful comment, I do appreciate it.

I just love your videos. I feel like I'm sitting and talking to a friend. You share some very interesting facts. Love seeing the bees. If you ever decide to do a pass along on Sampler House I'd love to be on the list. I keep looking for it but haven't found it yet. I think making a project bag from your applique block is a great idea. I've started making solid or pieced fronts on mine and quilting them. Both the backs and fronts have batting. One our quilt guild members passed several years ago and I bought her old Singer and her 20" square ruler. I gave the machine to my son. Every time I use that ruler I think of Jean. Anna of Quilt/Stitch Roadies pointed out in a recent video about how excited we get when we find a x-stitch or quilty treasure in a thrift shop so just think that when our stash ends up there one day the joy it will bring to a fellow crafter. I thought that was a great way of thinking about it. Although my son tends to have his grand dad's hoarder tendencies so who knows what will happen to my stash. I just hope it is loved and admired by someone! 😊

So glad to have you here watching, Diane. : ) I think Anna is on to something there.. when you think about it, we get SO much enjoyment from samplers that were stitched all those years ago. One little girl stitched a sampler and then a century (or more) later, hundreds of us go buy the chart and stitch what she did. I love that!

I was/am so happy for you and your sewing machine and cabinet finds. But what really touched me was the reverence for the items left behind so neatly placed. My heart about broke and It made me think of my mom and grandmother’s sewing treasures. Thank you. A story about taking kids to movies. I took my grandson to see Where the Wild Things Are when he was 4. A classic, right?! Well. It got to the part where the lady monster grabs the boy and swallows him and he’s in her stomach. My grandson was now on the verge of throwing up!! What the hell!! I think that was the last movie I had the nerve to take him to. 😅

Where to start? LOVE you and this video. I think you are the official queen of drop down notes... and your editing is spot on lady! Guess what I told my husband yesterday?... I want to try keeping bees! We have plenty of room -so after I go down that rabbit hole of research, I will most likely jump in the deep end. Lovely to see your machines, it makes me want to stalk Craigslist to find some treasures! I too am sucked into the BBDQAL. I've been playing with the applique, It's fiddley. Your G. Leger is the most gorgeous thing, I can't wait to see her finished. And Joan Sands makes me want to download and start another sampler ... :(... too many on the go at the moment! But one day! Thanks for keeping me company while I stitch... Happy stitching to you!

Katherine, that is awesome that you want to keep bees! One of the most valuable things I did when I started was to look up the local beekeepers' association and connect with them. They routed me to classes and a beekeeping supply store where I could show up in person and ask questions. Now there are SO many amazing tutorials online and on YT but nothing beats having a chance to watch other beekeepers in action in person to see if you really like it. Also, every region is different when it comes to weather, and that directly impacts bee timelines and what type of equipment is best, etc. So connecting with your local group will give you that specific into. This is the perfect time to start your research, now that it's mid/late season for colony growth you can learn, prep and place equipment to get ready for the spring bee packages and hive your first bees in March or April of 2022. Please message me on IG if you want, happy to share the limited bit I know. Yay bees!!

Thank you for the link to Honeybee Democracy - very interesting. We have kept bees here in France and when we were newbies we had a swarm and, like you, cutting the branch meant that it fell in the wrong place, just beside the box. I have to admit that I ran away after that !! But the bees just went straight back to their original place and we were able to collect them when it got a bit darker. I love bees. Queen and Cricket.

Oooo another beekeeper! Hi Carol! If we hadn't been fully suited up I probably would have wanted to run also. Being on a ladder at the time helped prevent that impulse as well LOL. Glad 'my' bees tended to find their way despite my novice fumbling. As for Honeybee Democracy info, the details about the bee behavior was fascinating but the methods they used to research was just as interesting to me. Very cool. : )

Third, you antique machine journey is fun. Makes me think. Fourth, I love the idea of using one of the BBD quilting blocks on a project bag. Knitting taught me to be very careful with who I craft for! A few years ago I knitted a shawl for my sister who ended up putting it in the washing machine (even though I gave her written instructions, and even propose to wash it for her) and it came out almost felted. She still loves it and "doesn"t notice the difference" but I'm like dude, I spent a month and a half knitting this thing. When I started cross stitching I told myself I would never cross stitch for anyone else. I've changed my mind since then, I would cross stitch for another cross stitcher! ;)

Ooooo! Congrats on the 221k! I bet you were thrilled! And the Touch & Sew looks like a really neat machine. I was reading that some people got frustrated with them because threading the tensioner was a bit quirky and if you didn't get it right you'd (naturally) get a big ol' thread nest on the underside of your project. So they put those threading diagrams on the inside of the machine and then changed the tensioner on later models. Super interesting.

Hi Susan! Not sure if we'll collect honey this year, it depends on how their stores look toward the end of the summer. Honeybees need so much fuel to maintain hive temperatures throughout the winter here in the PNW, so that's the priority. This hive is blowing me away with how much they already have socked away, so it's possible we could pull a few frames of honey to harvest.
