It’s called choice paralysis. I relate to this video big time. I’m a fan of Game Pass but this just makes choice paralysis worse. I liked your video on building a library and I think you’re on to something. Reduce access to games and we will probably play more in a meaningful way. Like we did as kids.

I felt this deeply myself. To solve this i went down to a switch lite and a Miyoo Mini+. Only install up to 3 games and finish 1 before adding something new. It has been the best way to game for me. Else I'll jump between something new every time and never get anywhere.

@@JamieRA benefit of this is not needing to pay for lots of storage. I’m a serial jumper. From consoles to games I hop all over the place. Find it very hard to focus unless I’m heavily invested in a game. I managed to sink 200hrs into Breath of The Wild no problem. Most of the time it’s 20hrs here and there and I either lose interest or another dozen games come out and my focus is gone. Rarely do I finish games. 😢

Every so often I go and uninstall EVERYTHING and try to leave less than 5 things installed. Give me two weeks and my drives are full again. I spend more time thinking about gaming than gaming at this point because it’s overwhelming. I’ve bought more games in the last two months than I’ve played. 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

So well said! I appreciate your honesty. I've been in the same boat for a while now. I'm excited to get time to game, but when I have a free minute, I'm paralyzed by my library. So I scroll and scroll, then I go to the store to see what's on sale. And I add to the library but never really play anything. I'm learning to pause on the purchases but still working on what to actually play. It might be time to limit my choices and just play what's in front of me. No more trying to play with all of my toys at once. Thanks again for sharing!

Don't get rid of anything bro. All gotta do is choose a videogame and game for the time, stick to it until you've finished it or is satisfied with it. Maybe box the rest for a while, disconnect or something like that. You're gonna want to play maybe a PS5 exclusive or something like that eventually. I bought a ps5 for ffvii rebirth, and thought about selling afterwards, but now with astro bot coming I want to play that. The problem is leaving the choice for the moment, you gotta choose and commit before your playing time.

Amen! Over the past years I have experienced the exact same thing... have everything but hardly play anything. I wish I would have learned this a decade ago but simplicity brings genuine happiness. Thanks for the Cup today. Love what you are doing. I am a father of twin 13 year old boys and a 9 year old boy. Gaming is something we all enjoy together and has brought us closer together. Keep on keeping on.

The more I listened to this video, the more I felt like it was one of the most important things I’ve heard in awhile. I’ve been tech-obsessed for most of my life and in particular have constantly wanted to try the next big thing. I spent multiple years building, reconfiguring, and rebuilding my ideal desktop PC only to realize I never used it for the games and work that I wanted to. Not too long ago, I sold the parts and bought a Steam Deck, iPad Pro, and Nintendo Switch. While that does mean I have more devices, I have much more purpose-built tech that fits my needs and lifestyle so much better. I do feel the need to slow down my desire for obtaining more Switch games, but for the most part I feel like I’ve arrived at a much more contented place with my technology life than I’ve been in years.

My guy, I felt this on a deep level inside. I have thousands of games now but growing up I maybe had 15-20. A NES, N64, and a GBC. Up until I got a PS2. Once I got money I built a PC I started collecting. An I had some good memories, but I maybe only played......5% and have beaten less. My daughter likes games. We haven't gotten to the point where we play together but she has her own switch an the options are their when the time is ready.

I definitely get it. What I ended up doing with my deck was uninstalling everything I don't touch for at least a month. I would argue in real life application of the thought is leaving the military with the GI Bill is a similar experience in the sense you are overwhelmed with choice, and you want to experience everything but it's just not feasible and you have to focus on a couple things at best because in reality that's all you have time for. Just like your house, garage or whatever applicable, you gotta keep up with those things or it'll stress you out and next thing you know either digitally or literally you'll become the topic of the next episode of hoarders. Figuratively.

I've been on that same boat as of late, but im mostly a portable gamer, I can pack my set up in a bag and take it everywhere, I have a laptop, steam deck and a switch. what I find works for me is having my Steam Deck for online games I play with my friends, big AAA games that I really wanna play and can run, or those extremely old classics, stuff like Black Ops 2 or Fallout NV than I cant play on my switch, and my Switch lite is exclusively a Nintendo and Indie machine,, being more portable it makes sense to play smaller games in it for me.

Fellow dad, going through the same issues. Getting rid of things is so hard because selling requires the right market/buyer bc it’s so hard to just up and donate things knowing how much they meant to you. Newer things are super easy to rid with, but those old consoles from childhood are just so difficult to let go.

Bro are we literally the same person? Just got my steam deck oled back from RMA and have not felt the need to use it rn. I’ve been on my switch 100% of the time playing out TTYD and loving it. I just love the slim form factor of it and if I can take this OLED with me in my pocket, game over that’s all I’ll use. I’m reconsidering a switch lite but I don’t think it’s a good idea as the OLED won’t get its use so just stick to what we have and enjoy!

For so long I never realized how I used random multiplayer games to play with friends to keep me gaming. I have too many choices. Most games I go back to are on old platforms. Where I have a limited choice of games. My 3ds is the most played thing next to my switch most of the time. If i had my old Nintendo consoles I would prolly be on those. Ever since the Majora’s Mask Recompilation released. I’ve been playing that on PC. It has given me such a bliss experience. Why you may ask? It brought me back to my childhood bedroom where Majora’s Mask was one of my only options to play and get lost in. Even though I played it countless times before.

Yes! This video really spoke to me. I have an Xbox, PC, Switch, PS5, Steam Deck, and ROG Ally and somehow I play LESS games - not more. I am trying to decide how best to pair back since I think it is a little silly to have them all (even though each one has it's specific purpose). Not sure I could move to only one like you did, but considering a PS5+Switch combo moving forward. Maybe keep the Deck or Ally to cover PC gaming. Any suggestions on how to pair down and simplify I am all ears!

its kinda funny how even with little differences , everyone who plays videogame has been in this situation of "doing nothing since i got so much" since i live in a 3rd world country our version of it is when we..ahem... mod a console due games being too expensive , but then we put everything new and hyped...ahem...legally brought and dumped of copies we clearly posses... and then...nothing, i open the game, play for 10/15minutes , then close and do the same to another game, then go read or watch something.. and since i am now decided to consume the games legally and choose one platform to build a little collection , every game i got since is special , since i can get one like...every 6 months, i completely explore everything i can, pay more attention to details , lore its a whole new experience, having too much is indeed very dangerous situation

I’m very much the same. I have a problem of buying games on multiple systems too trying to figure out what experience I like better. I was playing two files of Final Fantasy X on Switch and Steam Deck respectively. I eventually just continued on my Switch because it was easier for me to jump in and out of and I liked that the system was lighter. My Steam Deck sometimes takes a few minutes to start up a game lol. Comparing and analysis paralysis is very real though.

For me it isnt exactly fomo that has me wanting access to everything, since I know I won't play 90% of any given consoles library. It's more of a collection thing; I get enjoyment out of video game hardware, new or old. Awhile back I bought some OEM N64 controllers and modded them to wireless and usb c - havent used them once, they just sit proudly on my dresser as display items. But I now have a nice option if I ever want to emulate some N64 on a big screen. Lately I'm on a Switch Lite kick, buying up ridiculously cheap units and refurbishing them and/or hard modding them in some instances - haven't played more than 20 minutes total on them though. I've also been wanting to break into gameboy advance and ps4 pros now as well - upgrading to ssds and installing usb c into the controllers for ps4 while upgrading to new 3rd party mobos and lcd screens for GBA. Again I know I wont play them, just as I don't play my modded New 3DS XL, anything on my gamepass subscription nor my retro handheld. As far as games go, I havent actually played more than 20 minutes of a game since tears of the kingdom came out (put about 100 hours into that). Right now I'm optimistically waiting for Light No Fire and hoping it's a good game to play with my 5 and 8 year old kids on our xbox series'. As well as hoping a back catalog of Call of Duty games comes to gamepass so I can play some campaigns that I missed over the years.

Only thing i would say imo keep the PS5 as no doubt down the line there's bound to be something you want to play !!

Don't know man...i think you have to work on your psicology instead of getting rid of some hardware only because you can't cope with decisions... because you are now enjoying the Nintendo games mostly because the feelig you get when you play with your daughter, and thats good, but a month ago you literally said that you want something more than the common Nintendo games, and a week ago you said the Steam deck have gotten perfect, and days ago you were talking about the goods of the portal.....so its not normal that now you are sure you only needs nintendo again..thats some kind of bipolarity and the solution to that isn't selling anyrhing, but instead being happy with all your hardware, and using it whenever you want without worriying of what or where to play or labeling yourself as a gamer...

Im sure this has been suggested, and if so, i apologize. But, I often feel very overwhelmed with choice as well. I have found that sticking to one game until I complete it works best for me. If I start a game, and I do not like it, that's it. I consider it a loss and move on. For example, I started to play Shadow of Colossus for the PS4 and hated it. I forced my way through it. I was miserable. I attempted the final boss and got so frustrated I un-installed the game, deleted my save file, and watched the ending here. I realized that I should be enjoying my experience and not hating it. This is different for everyone. So, I decided then that if it's not for me, it's not for me. I say all that because it is very easy to get overwhelmed and begin to not enjoy the experience. What helped me was just focusing on one game that I find I enjoy playing. Sometimes, it takes an hour or two to decide that. If i enjoy it, I stick with it until the end. This really has helped me despite having a huge stockpile of games. I will get to them when I finish my current one. If I do not enjoy my current one, I move on to the next and do not look back. I'd rather take the loss early than experience a game I hated like Colossus. If I enjoy playing a switch game, I will focus on that game till its done. If I then decide to play a game on the PS5 and I enjoy it, I will play it till it's done. If next, I decide to play a retro game and I enjoy it, I will play it till it's done (Just actually did this with Super Adventure Island last week, finished a Switch game and thought I would try it out. Never played it back in the day.) My point, is just focus on one game that you enjoy and have a great time with that experience. This has really helped me in a sea of choice.

Nintendo 64 9. DS 10. Game Boy Advance 11. Game Boy 12. Game & Watch 13. Virtual Boy Yes, I will place the N64 dead last among Nintendo consoles. I know N64 was many people’s first Nintendo console. I don’t have any urge replaying any of it’s 388 games. I can play a better looking version of Conker on the original Xbox. I didn’t feel Nintendo made a great 3D Mario game until Galaxy 1 and 2. I never felt Super Mario 64 was a finished game. And it’s hard to replay Mario Kart 64 when we’ve had much better ones ever since. I think another reason why I didn’t love the N64 was because I felt Nintendo made the mistake sticking to cartridges in that generation. Sony benefited with larger games like Final Fantasy VII through IX, Xenogears, Metal Gear Solid, etc. And texture wise, it’s ugly to play. Not that PS1 is any better but I have more fond memories owning it because it was the only one I owned for that generation. PS1 arguably had the greatest turned-based Japanese RPGs library of all-time. I didn’t own an N64 until 2002. Got it used for $30 at GameStop. Then a $25 Saturn in 2004 in the now defunct GameCrazy only a day after I bought a GameCube. I have N64 games on my iPhone and I never have the urge to play them. Julien makes a point about limiting our options. Remember when Napster broke through in 2000? Songs didn’t matter anymore. We would buy a CD or tape cassette and we would try to enjoy all the tracks. Then songs became disposable. It happened again using torrent sites and ROM sites. I probably have every game I’ve ever wanted just like I have every movie, TV show, and song I’ve ever wanted and I only play two of those games constantly for the past three months…. FFVII Remake Intergrade (Steam Deck) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch Lite) I’m close to finally getting platinum for FF7RI. My final mission is trying to beat Weiss. Closest I got to beating him was earlier in the morning. I finally staggered him twice using Tifa’s Forced Strikes but I only got him to about 30% health before he went to Phase 3 and killed my entire party with Immaculate End. Still need to master the dodging/parry which leads to Force Strike to raise the stagger gauge. Doing the Yuffie Shinra box challenge took me about 4+ hours like Tifa’s pull-ups vs. Jules but I finally figured it out within the last hour before I did it. I had my eureka moment and then it didn’t take long to beat it. I had only 1.8 seconds left by the time I hit the final box. I have a pretty good feeling I can get my first plat for any game by tonight or tomorrow. Similar to Julien, I too have been using my Switch more as of late. It’s usually to play some Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to get 3 stars and the gold trophy for all the booster courses. My Steam Deck will only last less than 2 hours to play in my car, so I do bring my Switch Lite to add more game time. The problem with Steam Deck is it will lack the third-party exclusives that systems from Sony and Nintendo have. The library between a Steam Deck and ROG Ally are essentially the same. Once you own one PC handheld, you don’t need another. Same applies to a retro handheld as it doesn’t have it’s very own library. It’s emulating libraries from the past. That’s what PC libraries will never have: Nintendo exclusives. Maybe over time when those consoles get emulated. Steam Deck and ROG Ally will share similar PC libraries but they will never get the latest Mario or Zelda game. And Nintendo has better replay value. It’s simple and fun. Appeals to families while Sony or Windows appeals to a certain demographic (ages 17-35). For the last 40 years, Nintendo has pretty much raised us all. And while I rank N64 as my least favorite, I don’t feel Nintendo has ever made a bad console. Even Wii U isn’t really that bad. Switch took games from that library and ported them. I do have an opposite view with their handhelds. I didn’t feel Nintendo made a beefy handheld until the Switch. Wii is becoming underrated while GameCube is becoming overrated thanks to emulation and the generation who grew up on it. You don’t need a GameCube if you have a Wii. While you don’t necessarily need a Wii U even though it can play Wii games because the Switch ported most of it’s games. With the exception of the 3DS because it’s more powerful than the N64, I think every Nintendo handheld before the 3DS is a waste of time. SNES or GBA? Give me SNES and even NES. How about DS vs. NES? I’d pick NES. Of course, this is just MY opinion. I’m aware how 3DS usually beats the Switch in popularity polls. You don’t need a DS if you own a 3DS. I just never found the GBA SP/DS/3DS comfortable to play on. I personally hated the Game Boy Advance SP. I found GBA to be extremely overrated like what Nintendo fans do when they speak of Breath of the Wild or whatever Nintendo game. A tad too sharp on the sides. While PSP slim, Vita slim, Switch Lite, and Steam Deck are so comfortable to play on. I’m actually thinking like Julien and maybe want to play only certain IPs that makes me happy and I’m already familiar with. Not necessarily retros, remakes, and remasters. I’m actually not into retros as I was in 2021. Not into all the nostalgia trips. I prefer games being remade or games with modern graphics. But I personally don’t have a favorite franchise. Super Mario? No. I love SMB 1-3. Played them constantly. While Super Mario World is my favorite Nintendo game ever. I did enjoy 3D World thanks to the 2.5D charm from the 80s/90s 2D Mario games but I’m not feeling Odyssey as much. Zelda? Never cared for it. I only beat Twilight Princess. Back in 1998 when everyone was hyping up Ocarina of Time, I was enjoying Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, and Metal Gear Solid on my PS1. I’m not into Nintendo IPs like many of their fans are. I will play a Super Mario or Mario Kart game and that’s it. I’m not addicted to Pokémon, Donkey Kong, Kirby, or Metroid. Final Fantasy? I only enjoyed FF7 and it’s remakes + FFX. I don’t love FF9 like many people do. I did enjoy FF6 and Tactics but neither would be something I’d want to replay. Not sure the current Steam Deck is powerful enough to get Final Fantasy 16. Shenmue? I think Shenmue III ruined the lore already. But…after I finish getting platinum for FF7RI on my Deck, I will try to plat Shenmue III next. Doesn’t seem too hard. I do enjoy the ambiance of that game. But it’s a very niche IP with limited appeal. Hence, it always flopped in sales. Sonic games can be very hit and miss. I haven’t played much Tekken since 5 on my PS2. What’s out there for me to love? Uncharted? I tried getting into Red Dead Redemption and it bores me to tears. And the God of War reboots from ‘18 and ‘22 looks boring to me. What IPs are out there that I can consistently look forward to? I do have a differing opinion from Julien. I prefer FF7 the entire franchise over any Super Mario or Zelda IP. I think the characters and even story about protecting their planet is way more interesting. I have many fond memories with the OG FF7. More than any Mario game and I played those games far more frequently dating back to the late 80s. My Top 10 Favorite Video Games Ever 1. Final Fantasy VII 2. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade? 3. Shenmue II 4. Tekken 3 5. NBA Street Vol. 2 6. Super Mario World 7. Ridge Racer (PSP) 8. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 9. Street Fighter II’: SCE (Genesis) 10. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Honorable mentions Final Fantasy X Tekken 5 Truthfully, while I do enjoy Final Fantasy VII Remake and will be proud to get my first platinum for it, I do NOT want to ever replay it again. Maybe to watch the endings for the base and Yuffie’s while equipped with Götterdämmerungs. I found getting platinum to be quite tedious. All that only to get a virtual trophy that nobody will ever see? I didn’t get the same satisfaction when I got everything from the OG FF7. That’s the problem with modern games and this trophy era we live in. It feels like a chore than actually being fun to play them. I still do play my Steam Deck more than my Switch Lite. But perhaps in 10 years, Switch will be remembered more fondly? Nintendo makes them more everlasting since they appeal to children and to the most people as possible like old Disney animated films. They want you to have a magical feeling playing their games. So many options across all forms of entertainment but so little time to enjoy them all. Maybe limiting ourselves is the best way? Gives us more focus and contentment. It’s like a Mormon man with many wives. One of them has to be his true love he keeps in his heart. The more options, the less time you will spend with that one and only true love.
