SYRIAN REFUGEE VILLAGE IN LEBANON
🇱🇧BREAD: Roll the dough into balls. Flatten and place in the tandoor oven to bake.
🇱🇧MANCHI MALFOUF (Stuffed Cabbage): Boil the cabbage head, peel the leaves, and mix parsley, mint, and grated tomatoes in a pan. Soak the rice and add it to the mixture after mashing the garlic. Lightly fry the meat and add it to the mixture. Incorporate tomato paste, a mixture of 7 spices, and salt. Mix everything. Cut the cabbage into smaller pieces and stuff them with the mixture. Place the rolled cabbage in a pot, then add pepper, mashed garlic, salt, dried mint, olive oil, and tomato paste mixed with water. Cook on the fire.
🇱🇧BEMYE (OKRA): Cut off the head of the okra, dice and grate the tomatoes. In a pot, add ghee and vermicelli noodles, then add rice, tomato mash, water, and salt.
🇱🇧MANSAF: In a large pan, add half rice and half bulgur. Place the lamb meat around with the head in the middle.

It was an honor to be part of such an important video. I've been involved in the Syrian refugee crisis since a young teen, visiting camps and helping as much as I could with education, food banks, etc... I really hope this issue gets solved in the near future, as it is an important one. Syrians are full of potential, and their culture is extremely rich in every possible way. Glad Sonny and his team decided to shed light on the food aspect of it 🙌🏼.

I agree, I love this channel BECAUSE it touches on other aspects and not just food and how everything relates to one another. Food is one of many aspects of life and showing the full picture like Sonny does is brilliant and appreciated. Also, I used to watch other channels, trying not to mention names, and they just focused on the food which was not as interesting to watch anymore. So I dropped them and continued to watch this channel.

I didn't expect to cry watching a food show but here we are. As an Egyptian I didn't know most of the details presented in the video.. I always knew it was bad but not to the details. I watched this with my eyes full of tears. Similar happened to us in Bosnia and no we are living in a foreign country far from home. Seeing how these people are living makes me cherish and value everything I have, this is an eye opener that life could be harder than what it currently is. I pray for all the people, I wish them nothing but best in their lives.

After all, by Invading Iraq we turbo charged the Islamist extremists that these people are fleeing from. We also did nothing as Assad dropped barrel bombs on his people, because we were too caught up in the disaster of our own making that was the Iraqi war.

I had the privilege of traveling to Syria before the war, I was one of very few Americans without a family connection to travel there. The food there was absolutely incredible, some of the most delicious flavors I've ever tried. The people were also all incredibly friendly and welcoming, and excited to show us their incredible history. Two stories stick out. One was a guy who saw my family walking and called out, "Americans! We love Americans! We don't like your government, but we love Americans!" Same buddy. Another was I was trying to find a place I could buy some water. I speak no Arabic, so I walked up to some guy on the street and tried to hand signal wanting to buy some water and he just handed me the bottle he had. What wonderful people. I hope I can go back one day.

I am impressed how Sonny can manage to bring important political, economic, social topics into his food videos without being forceful about it. And is able to make people conscious about things they try not to think about, to think about them. This sets him apart for a most of other KZfaqrs, and especially food vloggers who really just care about food normally. He does it in a really great way. He deserved any of the 10 million followers he has, and I wish him more. If he continues doing videos like this, his reach cant be big enough (Which is maybe the only way to make especially people from his home country care about these things, Europe takes most of the burdens of those problems.. Not exactly the countries who caused them in the first place)

I agree that the US bears a significant portion of the blame here but Europe's hands aren't exactly clean either. It was the UK and France who came up with the Sykes-Picot agreement that carved up the middle east after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Also Lebanon was a French colony for a time.

@@GC-ps9mn But the middle east situation we have nowadays, are joint "efforts" of UK and USA, trough their interventions in first Iran, then later Iraq Afghanistan and other countries. All those countries were doing well in the 50, no dictators and extremists inside. Then Mohammad Mossadegh said, our oil is more important for my country and citizens, because I have to care for them first. The USA didnt like that, and this started a whole series of interventions. Even then, it was about gold and other ressources, nothing had to to with "helping" anyone.

As a syrian, this video made me cry. I was born in the United States but moved to Aleppo, Syria when I was 1 and lived there until 2012 just as the civil war got worse. I am extremely lucky for having the privilege to come back to the U.S as a citizen. Millions of others were not as fortunate which breaks my heart. Thank you for making this video.

My family is Slovak. We make cabbage rolls but our recipe is slightly different. It's amazing how recipes change across the world. I pray for Syria and tgat the people can get their homeland back. There's no winners in war, only death and destruction.

We also have a version here in Norway, but a bit simpler. Think it was inspired by a turkish version during 1700 after a swedish king loved it and brought it back. Then it spread through Norway and Sweden

I worked in North Lebanon. Despite all the hardships these families have to go through, I have been always amazed and delighted by their resilience and never-fading spirit. At a certain point, I seriously questioned the attitude of people in welfare states, where they learnt to complain about everything, including young people unwilling to attend college... I talked to young people in similar camps and their biggest dream was to be enrolled in the education system because they understand the meaning and power of knowledge. I can just hope for the best for these people.

I was happy and sad seeing this. On the other hand...as someone who was homeless in America ... their living conditions are better. The built homes looked very nice and the food amazing.. sometimes there is nothing to eat... and some places are so much worse. Loved the video❤

Growing up Lebanese American, I had pretty much all the dishes the Syrians had in their camp, like the Okra stew and Cabbage. We are one people, and I hope we and our homeland will prosper again.

US military is still occupying Syrian oil and wheat fields, stealing both resources since more than ten years - and keeping the country under sanctions that prevent even the most basic goods like medicine and building materials from being available to rebuild the country. US' NATO ally Turkey is still bombing the Kurdish towns that our media praised for shielding Europe from the Islamic state back when the attention was on it. It's grotesque

I think that “ignorance is bliss” applies, but not because they don’t want to know…it’s because they feel helpless when they do know. Food is comfort, it’s home, it’s family, friends and the soul of so many. A lot of people forget that it’s not just about sustenance and survival of our physical body, but also about our emotional and spiritual selves. Food is one of the easiest ways to feel even one bit of normalcy amongst chaos and despair. Sharing loved foods and cultural or traditional meals is literally the easiest way to show you care, to teach someone about your people, your struggle and to bring people together. It’s something that everyone, everywhere has in common. The quickest and easiest way to trigger the parts of the brain that control nostalgia, comfort, security and feeling at ease are all effected when we share food/meals with others. We hear the food as it’s being prepared and that triggers happy memories of childhood, smelling the foods releases endorphins, tasting the food starts adrenaline flowing. It’s so much more than just survival and this channel highlights that perfectly.

My dear, they only made this video about how they live and how they eat, but they did not make a video about the sick or the needy. This camp contains fifty patients who were unable to treat themselves because they did not have the ability to do so.

Right in the feels. Its not often you watch a cooking show that feels like its shining a light on the living conditions and plight of a struggling people. At the same time, its wonderful seeing people come together to make the best of what they have, and that shines through in their cooking. How they cant/arent allowed to work jobs that elevate themselves out of their living situation, so instead they work tirelessly to farm what little they can and provide food for their families. May the divine uplift these people and find them opportunity.
