Another idea for dice that came from a kindergarten teacher is getting one of the magnetic cans with a clear plastic circle on the top that are for spices. The kids don't have to take out the dice. They shake the can then look in the top to count the dots on the dice. If you glue felt to the inside bottom, they are quieter. They stick to the fridge or you can take off the magnet. Dice never get lost on the floor again.

Here is my old lady advice...think ahead because you won't always be young. About 15 years ago I bought some 5 gallon containers and filled them with water. At the time I could carry them although it did take effort but now that I am older I tried to keep my muscles strong but had some unexpected health issues and can no longer lift that much weight. I always thought if I kept myself in shape I would be fine but sometimes unexpected trials happen. It is good to also get some smaller containers for water also.

None of my food sets on the floor. The water is on pallets so if something was to leak it’s going to go to the floor but it’s a pallet height and it’s a concrete floor. But the food is on shelves or in mylar bags in plastic containers so if there was ever a flood of some sort on that floor, it’s not going to get into the Food area

MOLD formed due to the slow leak that soaked into the floor and walls. I had stored several Costco jugs of laundry soap, stacked in a space next to a cart, and the botton two of THOSE split - do not stack plastic jugs!

Love the bamboo bowls. Will have to look for in $ tree. Don't know if you are the one I seen suggest this, but love the idea of baggie wash my plastic cutlery bc peanut butter gets in the grooves (while rving) & water is so precious. I soak in dish detergent, in a baggie & swish it. Otherwise it's goner. I do that with small undergarments too. Best baggies in my opinion, Ikea. They are great for books & vip papers 6-7 L. Ya'll just leave me some now, I've let the secret out & hope they continue to have the quality & not cut back. Happy Sunday.😊

I was labeling before I knew what prepping was. I am an opportunistic shopper so I used to take a piece of clear tape and write where and when I bought, as well as how much I paid, whenever I got what I thought was a really good deal. Some of those notes predate mandate to provide best by, etc, dates! But for my notes, I wouldn't know how old some of this stuff really is. I've called manufacturers to decipher codes but it seems at least some of them repurpose/recycle codes every 10 years. Code on canned turkey was a year ending in 7. Manufacturer said it was a 2017 item but I knew it wasn't because the person that bought it died in 2012. Besides, a 2017 product would have had a best by date. Another clue was the size. The can is currently sold as a 5oz but this can was 6oz. 2007? 1997? Earlier? I may never know. I did open and eat it in 2023. I'm still here so it was fine.

Thank you for keeping up spreading the word about not using milk jugs for water. The contamination risk is too strong and the jugs are certainly not. May I add the idea of getting wax paper and parchment paper, (the cheaper ones from Dollar Tree), so that we have cheap, clean, disposable surfaces to prepare food, if water is in short supply. If you can still smell the chlorine, your container is not completely air-tight. I have dehydrated vegetables in the same container that you have your pool shock in, but I have also added a food desiccant and used the Dollar Tree electrical tape around the bottom of the lid.

Wax paper and parchment paper put just as much toxins into food wrapped with them as milk bottles. Parchment paper is TEFLON which is poison. Wax paper is a petroleum based product touching your food. Neither of these things are "clean" or safe to put food on.

I had some stackable containers I bought for water. For less than two dollars more I could’ve got a 7 gallon but I chose to get the 4 gallon. Just because I have trouble lifting 5 gallons now so the 4 gallons I can still lift at 74. Any other days are usually 5 gallons. I don’t know anywhere from 50 to 100 times a day because I use them for replenishing the portable toilets when I clean them. Are used to deliver and pick up toilets. Those days are gone now to I don’t have the strength in my hands or the strength picking things up like I used to. I also have a couple of 2 gallon ones that I keep in the house garage so if I need some water quickly, it’s there. But I do have a five filter system for my reverse osmosis and I live in the lower 48 of Arizona. But I water can taste pretty picky so we all make sure our water is reverse osmosis. But the 4 gallon ones I have so many of them. I just take them down to a store and I feel them on the inside instead of the outside cause I think it is cleaner to do it there so every six months I replenish the water. And no I didn’t waste water. I put it in the pool because it was still good water. It’s just one of the updated to the new or water for drinking so my way to put it in the pool cause I have to put water in their periodically.

I like the tip about the bamboo bowls and will look for them. We have a Dollar Tree not far from us and they now have a building for lease’ sign on it. Either they’re not renewing the lease or they are closing that location. If we get containers like you showed for holding your plastic cutlery, we always wash them and re-use if we have family over for dinner and sending extras home with them. One tip is to hand wash them, we’ve forgotten and put them in the dishwasher and they buckle or melt. But they are usually sturdy enough to hand wash and reuse several times.

What about storing water in aloe vera drink 1.5L bottles? Unintentionally, I've had a couple survive several northeast winters outside. Pre-pandemic I had filled them with nonpotable water to use around the yard and they are still out there. Understandably, the shrink wrap labels are gone after the expansion and contraction but the containers themself are in tact. When I realized their durability, I ordered a couple dozen flavored aloe this year and I'm refilling them with water as I finish them. I also have collapsible 5 gallon jugs with a spout which do not do as well outside. Find a temperature controlled home for it and you don't have to move it. You can just refill/empty it one manageable container at a time.

Use soda or clean juice bottles instead for storing water; if you don't drink soda, ask your friends or collect them at your next potluck

Probably weevils from flour, pasta, rice or dry beans. Use diatomaceous earth to get rid of them (food grade) @ farm stores, TCS, Blairs, farm and fleet etc. Then use bay leaves in cabinets to prevent them. Also freeze all dry goods for 3 days to kill bugs.

Yes, weevils.

I suppose it depends on how sturdy is the plastic container. Does it seem as sturdy as a plastic soda bottle?

Make sure your pasta and rice in soda bottles are also put away in tubs as this can cause a rodent problem.....fyi...50 lbs rice fills 13 two liter bottles...we use soda bottles for bread crumbs and salt....dehydrated herbs and vegetables...easy pouring...larger mouth juice bottles for pasta and beans

Milk jugs: don't reuse containers. Don't store water in a container that did not contain pure water to start. I would recommend against even soda bottles or sports drink containers. You can never get them clean enough. The milk jug style water jugs spontaneously break and leak. I have distilled water stored for dosing my well water treatment and have lost gallons after the jugs decided to break inside a cabinet. The leak was slow enough that it appears to not have caused any damage, it leaked at about the evaporation rate, but I got very lucky.

I use my half gallon plastic vodka bottles for washing water. Very sturdy. What could be cleaner than 40 proof vodka?
