"The new black conservatives assume that without affirmative action programs, white Americans will make choices on merit rather than on race. Yet they have adduced absolutely no evidence for this: Hence, they are either politically naïve or simply unconcerned about black mobility. Most Americans realize that job-hiring choices are made both on reasons of merit and on personal grounds. And it is this personal dimension that is often influenced by racist perceptions." Cause lowering the testing expectations lowers the required capability of the student, reduced required capability can and will kill people in a myriad of ways depending on their profession. The lowered expectations on black students in medical fields has killed people and ruined the careers of otherwise rather capable people. Do you want to intentionally set up minorities to be killing people with their incompetence because they weren't tested hard enough?

One day, when the heart surgeon is hovering over you with scalpel in hand, you had better hope that he is in that position because he actually knows what he is doing and is not part of some equity program that reduced standards just to get certain people into that role. Let’s think about you are saying together, because clearly you didn’t think before you hit ‘enter’. Presumably, the surgeon holding the scalpel should’ve been trained on any and every aspect of the surgery that they’re about to perform BEFORE they grabbed the scalpel, correct? Maybe the barrier of entry into the programs (in this case medical school) is relaxed a little bit, but they’re still going to have to do the course work, residencies, and practice before they become a doctor, correct? Same goes with the other jobs you mentioned, no? Not to mention that there are numerous stories about doctors who don’t look like their patients, literally ignoring, or not taking symptoms seriously (quick Google search of “Black women in labor, symptoms ignored” shows how common that example actually is). If you’re that opposed to preferential treatment based on race, you’re literally centuries too late. This isn’t about that, as much as it’s about righting wrongs of the past, that have generational consequences.

I worked for Flying Tiger Freight Airline at Los Angeles International Airport for decades. I never saw racism, of any kind in any part of their hiring practices. We had everything, including all genders, races and ages from Vice Presidents, pilots, flight attendants, cargo handlers and all administrative positions as we were a global freight company with military contracts. I am not saying there is no racism anywhere in our country but the constant emphasis on gender and racial issues takes us back into the realm of the divide we find ourselves in today.

Well said. Saying equity doesn’t exist is crazy. America is capitalism. The only color that matters is green. Do y fall for this Us bs Them mentality. Especially when so many examples show otherwise. Look at our Supreme Court, White House. Maybe in corporate culture there are not many minorities at the top, but you don’t just give someone a position because of their race. If it’s your company you put the strongest at the top. Because they are there to make you green. People in current generations are lost. No one’s against st you except those yelling that they are on YOUR SIDE. Just be the best you can be. Times will get hard and there can be ugly people out here but let’s not make those types give is the impression everyone in that race is like that. We all are basically the same. @@bulwerboys6011 That’s not what we are talking about. The chart is not expressing equal opportunities that’s not the point of the chart. And lowering standards only makes the travel more dangerous. People already have equal opportunity. Life may simply not flow in such a way as to wash someone into completion of a goal. If you want to be an airplane pilot put in a lot of work and effort. Some people have to put in more than others because of intelligence or because of life circumstances. It’s not society’s fault that someone was born without any hands or feet. One sister took out loans (still owes on those), another sister served in the Army, & I just worked abd did school kinda slowky. But that AP History class saved me from having to take 2 college classes, which saved me hundreds if dollars, so I could move on. I never looked down on those who didn't take the class or the test, & I doubt those who didn't even cared abt AP History, so who does it hurt? The Senator is full of bs. For one thing the minimum standards are not being breached. The equality/equity chart is bs. The orange color is under dispute and the whole purpose of of the govt intervention in systemic racism is to even out the brown color...which is clearly not to scale. Let's put it another way. In medical terms, can you imagine if hospitals never let residents practice medicine? Because the attendees are the best of the best right? Who cares about their replacements? Every investment requires a sacrifice in the present. To say that the best pool of pilots are white males is bs. The best way to grow the pilot pool is to grow the pool of applicants. The best way to do that is by example...which is diversity hiring. Many diverse would be pilot students wouldn't think that pilot is in the list of eligible careers because they doen't see people like them in that career. That is a very powerful motive. Can you see yourself or your kids as a pro basketball player? Didn't think so. Some fixing needed there too in the reverse direction. Referring to the charts again, the disparity of the brown heights make the required talented and/or grit (orange color) unnecessarily large to overcome the brown advantage.

I failed my first checkride for a PPC because I got super stressed and make a mistake. I went back and retook it and the DPE said he couldn't have flown better than me. A few mistakes doesn't define someone's career. Edit: I was going to recount the whole checkride to go through it step by step, but then realized this is a youtube comment section and no-one cares. I should mention my claim above isn't entirely true since he said I was in ACS standards for my recovery from unusual attitudes but he wasn't too happy about them. I don't mind this at all though since my organization didn't cover recovery from unusual attitudes in my training for a huge time period between when I was trying to get an open time slot from the DPE and retake the checkride. Now I know to make sure I'm always keeping that stuff in mind for myself, plus I'm super happy I was still within ACS standards anyway.

At my grade school, we have the poster on equality and equity that is much better depicted. One half of the poster has three boys (or girls) of three different heights standing on a level grass ground facing a wooden fence and beyond the fence is a baseball game. The taller boy can easily see over the fence. The middle boy has to stand on his toes and is straining over the fence to see. The third boy is also standing on his toes, but no matter what he does, he is way too short to see the game beyond the fence. On the other side of the poster is the same three boys, but this time the middle boy and the short boy are standing on boxes of two different sizes where they are large enough for the two to easily over the fence. No one is bringing anyone down. Not one boy is negatively affected by the others. ALL can see the game comfortably. Why is that a problem? Are you against the fact that two boys needed help to see the game?

The scientists who discovered the cure to polio brought more value to society and humanity at large than the guy who bags your gorceries at your corner store. So why on earth would we live in a society where they are rewarded equally? In what world do people continue to strive for more if they are treated equally to the people who strive for nothing? This is and always has been the problem with this argument which is the core problem with communism and which is why modern communist countries have adopted forms of capitalism (which has created inequality) in order to survive. That Equality v. Equity poster chart was very telling. With the Equality side on the left, no one’s telling the person on the lower level to stay there. This is America. You can always make your own opportunity and step up to the next level, but it takes guts and it takes work to do it. With the Equity side on the right, what’s the incentive for a person to work hard and be brave enough to do what it takes to jump up to the next level? Answer: There isn’t any. You can just stay where you are and rely on some outside force or social program to do the “lifting up” for you. That’s the problem. Vance’s issue here is he’s justifiably nervous that the opportunity for people on the lower levels to apply their effort and skill to lift themselves up professionally, socially, and economically is being removed from the individual where it belongs and is being transferred to rest of society to pay for. America is still the land of opportunity and those opportunities are out there for anyone to capitalize on themselves. We don’t have to be spoon fed by people in the political establishment who’ve proven they are not trustworthy enough to shape and mold our society in the name of righteousness, because that word to them as a group is as alien as amebas are to elephants.

Guaranteeing a "level playing field" is one thing; participants can compete, as it were, in the same environment (America) and under the same rules (the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law) in hopes of garnering a similar reward. It is not a zero sum game. It is entirely improper, therefore, for government to interpret a level playing field as meaning that one's effort (let alone non-effort) is guaranteed to create an equity of outcome.

Well the issue is with humans. It is extremely hard to point to something in the immediacy and say "that is wrong we need to take action to fix it now". But instead, we see the results and think "is there something that caused these differing results?" It would be like if you were a teacher and you gave a test with the answers written on the board. You noticed that everyone in the first 2 rows got every question correct. Most people in the middle rows got most questions correct, and only a few people in the back row got every question correct. Initially it seems as if everyone had the same opportunity. But once the results come back you then start to think "why is this result the way it is?" And the you ask "how can we make it better". There is always extraneous variables (in my example some of the student may not understand that those were the answers. Some may not care. Some may not be able to read etc), but to ignore the results and chaulk it up to "well the kids that failed just didn't apply themselves, or care enough" is disingenuous.

It also seems they are not looking to explain who is given that bigger box and based on what. Who decides who gets what box? The person that studies and/or works their arse off may be seen as having an advantage and given a smaller box, while lazy may be considered disadvantaged and given a bigger box. Or they try to give preference based on gender or skin colour? In that case we already know who gets a smaller box, even though they may have similar backgrounds, life, skills and motivation.
@troybaxter
@troybaxter 5 ай бұрын
My take has always been, you give everyone the same box, but you leave it up to the charity of the individual to determine whether or not they need the box in the first place, and if they should give it to someone else. The problem is that unlike the height discrepancy analogy they love to use, you can't inherently see the disadvantages someone has in life, and to determine it from an outside perspective where you pick and choose which demographic needs more help than others is inherently flawed. Take race for instance. You can look at two individuals (one white, one black) and claim the black person needs more help in life than the white person. The flaw in this is that you ignore the fact that that white person grew up in an impoverished household in the middle of West Virginia while the black person grew up in a rich suburb of Washington DC. If anything, that poor man from West Virginia needs more help than the rich man from DC. Take wealth. Someone you may consider poor may actually not need money from a wealthier guy because maybe they live in an area that is cheap and doesn't require a lot of money to live off of or he simply doesn't care for money. Meanwhile, the wealthier guy may be living in an expensive city where he needs every nickel and dime to even afford rent and travel to his job. It would be wrong to steal money from the wealthier individual and give it to the poorer individual. And these are just two examples of how grey this area is, and how you cannot use broad strokes to dictate who is worthy and who isn't. It is why equality is more important than equity. Equality ALLOWS the individual to determine whether or not they need something and give what they have to someone else, whether it be a box to watch a game, money they have in their bank account, or even knowledge they have obtained in life.

One is to support those at the bottom so they can achieve the same results as everyone else. The other is to dissuade or prevent those at the top from performing at their best so that those at the bottom don't have as far to go. Its much easier to hold people back than to push them forward. I used to think "equity" always refers to "equality of outcome," but now I'm not so sure that's what people mean when they use that word. The dictionary definition of equity is "the quality of being fair and impartial," which is basically the complete opposite of what I used to think it was, and I don't know which definition people are using when they say "equity." If we use the dictionary definition of equity ("fair and impartial"), then this is basically no different from the definition of "equality" which refers to "equal opportunities." All this to say that, before jumping down someone's throat just because they use the word "equity," ask them to define how they're using that word first. If someone uses the word to refer to "being fair and impartial," then there is no reason to criticize them for supporting it. If someone uses the word to refer to forced "equality of outcome," then criticize the hell out of them, because they're basically arguing for the elimination of peoples' rights to make different choices and experience the differential results of those choices themselves.

I think we can tell by their actions, and by experience of what these equity things have led to, and the results ARE discriminating and have lowered the standards across the board. It's safe to say that equity is not fair and impartial, but just the opposite. It's always used when it's about lifting people of perceived struggles at the expense of other groups. Like filling quotas, which is exactly what ESG is.

@@Zeetana1 It's certainly true that some people use the word "equity" to propose that things are made easier for some ethnicities and hard for others in order to ensure the percentage of each ethnicity in the workforce is proportional to the percentage of each ethnicity in the population. But what if someone who wants to know what "equity" means discovers that the dictionary definition is "fair and impartial," and then just starts using the word "equity" as a replacement for "fair?" That person is clearly not using the word "equity" the same way that a lot of far-leftists use it. It's not fair to assume a person with little involvement in politics who just happens to know the dictionary definition of equity is guilty of the same kind of discrimination caused by some of those on the far left.

As a person of color, there does come an inherent sense of pride from seeing people who look like us in certain positions such as airline or military pilot. As an Air Force brat myself, I often looked up to pilots. They were my rock stars. However, I would never in a million years advocate for relaxing standards in order to see someone like me in those positions. As a matter of fact the source of pride came from knowing that a person accomplished a very difficult feat and underwent years of hardship to attain that position. They overcame academic and logistical obstacles to earn those pilot wings. If I knew that a pilot, whether they look like me or not, did not undergo all of the prudent and necessary steps to attain their position, not only would I not want to fly on a plane with them, I would not respect them as a person. This is the problem with leftism. Under the guise of good intentions they actually create an environment that is so detrimental and disempowering, The unintentionally create more racism than they solve. Equity is to provide equal access to opportunity, even if some assistance like ramps for handicapped people are needed. In schools equity is about helping kids with things like learning disabilities or language disabilities, or transportation to get the help that they need so that they have better access to education. Equality is about treating people equally in the work place or in school to protect against day to day discrimination. Equity applies to everyone’s access, Equality is about how we treat each other. This. Something I was taught by my running coaches and trainers is that the most satisfying part of completing a race (5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Ultra) is not the completion of the race, but the knowing that the journey you took to get to the finish line is what got you there in the first place. The race and the ultimate completion of said race is nothing more than a celebration of all the hard work you put in prior, and a possible stepping stone to the next mountain you want to try and climb. And just like in life, there will be people who are simply better and faster at getting to the finish line than others. Some people can complete that 5K in 15 minutes. Some in 45. Some not at all. All that matters is that they all got to the starting line in the first place. How, when, and where they finish should be determined by the individual and those around them that want to help them get faster.

The privileged kids didn't have to jump as high to reach the objective as the kids born standing in a hole, so we put more time and energy into helping those students succeed. That's Equity. Pretending they're all equally able to achieve the results with equal levels of support ignores the many advantages privileged kids bring into class with them.

Here's how to explain "Get woke, go broke". Equity prioritises the selection process of physical characteristics (i.e. skin color, sex) to provide opportunities to those groups. If that is the priority, then it is no longer about whoever has the best ability to do a job, but who has the highest "privilege". Companies using this are focusing more on "who" is making the products, rather than the "quality" of those products. Thus, equity results in a degrading of those products and services, to the detriment of the customer. Customers will then go elesewhere for their products and services. Company goes broke in the process. Secondly, using a selection process of "physical characteristics" is racism. The woke activisits know this, but are trying to hide it by changing the name to "equity". Don't be fooled by it.

My father, if he were alive today, could have answered several of those questions, as the was a representative for many years to the International Civil Aviation Organization. Certifying this applicant for the position of FAA Administrator is like giving the bus steering wheel to a blind person.

It is not about equality or equity, but competence. The best qualified with skill sets that complements the work assignment needs to be the priority. No one is equal and equity is a social construct that can not be fully measured or easily evaluated.

I guess we're going to ignore the legacy of the Tuskegee airmen and what they had to endure to ensure that we are measured by outcome when given the opportunity. The key is to be given the opportunity to perform.

ANYONE that believes its ok to treat one group of people worst or better than another just because of the color of their skin is a horrible excuse for a human and should be shunned and never allowed to hold powerful positions like this. EVER. Equality of opportunity is what we should strive towards. Giving people unearned legs up is horrific.

Equity means that no matter what you bring to the table, no matter how hard you work, no matter your successes, you will never be allowed to advance more than the person that brings nothing to the table, doesn't work any harder than necessary, or has no successes. Actually, you will be penalized and therefore discredited in order to keep you at the same level as the other person. Let that sink in.
