If the belt don't fit off the cuff, you only need to undo the rear sprocket and let the tensioner off to pick up the slack. Can't for the life of me understand why people undo both. Great video - forgot the torque settings so was dead handy that this came up.

Thanks for a great video. As a mechanic some 25 years ago I am now confined to home DIY due to age and this video gave me the info I needed to work on a "modern" engine. I would add though that for the average home mechanic the main problem with this job is the removal and retorqueing of the crank pulley bolt. It is VERY tight and my quality zip gun and small home compressor had no chance of removing it. You need a large compressor capable of producing a continuous 8 bar+ to get the required power from an impact wrench, which of course most decent garages will have. I strongly recommend using the Sealey flywheel locking tool (don't get a cheapo tool made of low quality steel) and organise a long (at least a metre) bar to obtain the necessary leverage to undo this bolt and similar to retorque the new bolt when you have got the new belt on and timed.

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated! the flywheel locking tools are really useful.. I must admit its easy to take the buzz gun for granted when we have a decent air supply 👍

I did this job as a green diy mechanic and I can confirm that your comment is spot on! I was moderately well prepared, ( no air gun), I improvised some pulley blocking tool and pulled my ass off with a breaker bar to get it loose. Tensioning: I didn't manage to set it to the required torque, so i just set it as tight as i could. I used the locking pin during tensioning and I bent it out of shape. The car is still running perfect, six years and 45000 km later.

Excellent video and very informative guide, the fact you've included all necessary tools etc in the description is brilliant and I'll subscribe. Got one of these Mk2 Focus myself, intended to buy to sell on but I think I'll be keeping it long-term as it's a great car. Just thought I'd mention, these 1.6 Zetecs in the Focus can suffer from rainwater and screenwash fluid dripping down and collecting in the recess for the spark plugs/HT leads. As the same engine is used in the Mk2 Volvo S40/V50, the Volvo spark plug cover fits and stops this. I've just fitted one to my Focus for this very reason, circa £21 brand new from a Volvo main dealer. Have now subscribed 👍

Wasn’t too bad, just a couple of things were a nightmare; the cam sprockets were a half tooth out on the belt so I had to loosen the exhaust cam bolt to tension the gap, and the auxiliary stretch belts were an absolute c**t. Definitely damaged the bearing on the water pump as there is a slight wobble, but as it’s a beater daily so it’ll do for now. Good luck mate

A MUST you need is a FLYWHEEL LOCKING TOOL Everytime I used the buzz gun to do the crankcase bolt up it screwed up my timing ever so slightly EVERYTIME. Yh your car will run doing it with buzz gun but say good bye to fuel economy and hello to more vibrations in cabin and more problems down the road… just my opinion from my experience but for an extra £30 flywheel tool you can actually torque the bolt to proper specs and keep your timing by locking flywheel. You boys are proper keep up the good stuff 🙌🏼
@diydaly
@diydaly Жыл бұрын
Tbh mate with a decent buzz gun I’ve never had any problems .. eve. Checking the timing after I’ve always got it bang on.. not to say the locking tool isn’t a good option though .. obviously it it better to use one as it ensures it stays fixed and better if you can torque the bolt correctly

Hi, thank you for such an informative video. Can I ask would this be the same for a 61 plate 1.6 petrol focus zetec? I've paid a garage to change the cambelt and water pump but they only changed the cambelt, telling me the water pump isn't driven by the cambelt.
@diydaly
@diydaly 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment.. 😁 Yeah it would be the same .: strictly they are correct in that the water pump isn’t driven by the timing belt.. it is driven by the auxiliary belt . the reason for replacing the pump whilst doing the timing belt it that the water pump body sits behind the timing belt and the timing belt tensioner bolts to the water pump.. so if your water pump was to fail you’d need to take the timing belt off to replace it.. thus it’s con convenient to replace it whilst doing the Cambelt 👍👌

Hi Mates, Thanks for this awesome video! It helped a ton as I am usually more of a Honda guy. Anyhow, I changed the timing belt on my mates car. And it runs nicely and upon startup it idles fine at 1000 before dropping down to about 750 when warmed up. However in our quick test drive when we left the car idle at a gas station it began to idle a little roughly at around 750rpm. With a repeating "luggin" type noise. This also caused a dimming in the headlight so it makes me feel it's serpentine belt related. I am 99% sure timing is bang on. As it is driving fine with no issues at different speeds throughout the rev range. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated! 😁

So I fixed it. Tore it all down again and checked timing. This time the timing tool wouldn't slot into both the camshaft slots at the same time. So one of my timing was the issue. I undid the cam pully bolts. Lined the cams up and put the crank to the TDC locking pin. Started the car and all issues are gone. 😁👍

Great video but I have a question. How does the process change for a Powershift gearbox? I'm thinking of the parts where you manually crank the engine for timing, finding tdc or places where you suggest using 4th and braking to torque bolts. What do you do for the Powershift there as the gear lever is usually locked when the engine isn't running and shifter in Park setting?

Hey, also just want to ask, the engine here looks very similar but mine's a 2012. Are they the same engine...1.6?
@diydaly
@diydaly 3 жыл бұрын
Hi yes it is pretty much the same, you can still check TDC through the spark plug hole & it will still have the locator on the crank for the timing pin. You can still turn the engine over with the crankpulley.. you just need to stop the car in neutral & leave the key in the ignition rather than shift it into park.. Obviouly you can't put it into gear and lock the brakes to undo/tight the crank pulley bolt, you may need to just use the brakes .. if you have a buzz gun it will suffice without having to lock the brakes.. Hope this helps 👍👌

Thanks for the comment Andy! Hi Gav, this is a really informative video thanks for sharing! With the absence of an air gun, would it be possible to torque up the crankshaft bolt with the car being in 4th gear and someone being hard on the brakes, in the same way as you describe to loosen off the bolt. I don't want to apply that much torque against the timing pin and bend it, and ideally I don't want to remove the starter to access the flywheel either. Any thoughts? Thanks

Hi , may I ask if you DID leave the pin on crankshaft while loosening the pulley bolt ? Is there a risk of pin breaking inside engine ???!!!
@diydaly
@diydaly 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, if I remember correctly The crank only turns onto it (rather than locating into a hole) so undoing it wont catch it , I would only ever undo it with the pin in if using a decent impact driver to undo the bolt .. you should never attempt to undo it with the pin in if using a bar to undo 👍

Hi, I don't have buzz gun and I would like to replace timing belt in my focus too. Because of that I have few questions, I hope it might help others as I can't find definitive answer anywhere on the internet. What is the official procedure of torquing crankshaft? How many Nm I should torque crankshaft and plus how many degrees? Can I torque crankshaft while the only one crankshaft lock(one that you presented on the video) is installed? Wouldn't be too weak? I'd appreciate any help!
@diydaly
@diydaly 2 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks for the comment , the official procedure is as follows (2 options depending on the bolt size.. Crankshaft pulley bolt(M12) - Renew the bolt - 4 stages.. 1 = 40NM 2 = 90 degrees 3 = wait 10 seconds 4 = 15 degrees Crankshaft pulley bolt (M14) - Renew the bolt - 4 stages.. 1 = 100NM 2 = 90 degrees 3 = wait 10 seconds 4 = 15 degrees you can't torque it up relying on the locking pins holding It as it will damage them.. the best thing to do would be to lock the flywheel using a prybar / screwdriver in the flywheel teeth
@cofty

Excellent description of the job thanks. What about torquing up the crank bolt if you don't have an impact gun? Can you finish it safely using 5th gear and foot on brake without danger of losing the correct timing? (pin out when you do that?) Thanks again.
@diydaly
@diydaly 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment , much appreciated 😁. Yes if I didn’t have a buzz gun I’d lightly nip it by hand with the pin in first then take the pin and torque it up with someone pressing the brake pedal hard down in 4th gear.. the timing shouldn’t alter but if I’d had to do it like that I would turn it over twice (2 full turns of the crank) then recheck the timing 👍👌
